Downunder Detroit by Tall Kiwi Chick (TKC) - 11/5/09

TALL KIWI CHICK was a winner in one of our contests for free tickets and of course we chatted it up a bit and met up with her and her crew at the show. After knocking back a few cold ones we were fast friends and thick as thieves.
Anyway - we thought it would nice to get some insight about good ol dietroit from someone with a bit different perspective so we created

"Downunder Detroit"

is the new column written by our TKC
who is visiting Detroit for a while
from her homeland of New Zealand.

She loves music, men & drinking

Halloween in Detroit 2009
So I was really really excited about having a proper american halloween.
Started drinking at home, and gave out candy to tonnes of dressed up kiddies! I enjoyed the kids who were a little more original, like Steve Urkel!! They got extra candy!!
Then it was my turn to dress up and go out, I went as a New Zealand Rugby Player, now for those who don't know, Rugby is like football, just no padding.... Big everywhere else in the world, except here.. I didn't really expect people to recognise what we were dressed up as, i just wanted to represent NZ! But surprisingly there were a few people who knew straight away! I stayed away from the big halloween parties and hit some pubs close to home. Dissapointed that there were lots of people who weren't dressed up at all, but happy with the originality of most peoples costumes that did dress up.
Those who know me, can vouch i am a big fan of the high-five, so i rewarded the people who dressed up at the pub with a high-five, and lectured those who didn't...
Sorry!
Great night though and i can't wait to have another occasion to dress up!!

We met with BBE prior to chatting with HMS - see below
Har Mar Superstar
After a few more drinks
, we also got the pleasure of having a chat with the headlining act, Har Mar Superstar. After seeing some of his music we were excited to meet him and see what he's like in person, he was awesome! Plus he got extra points because he could understand our accent with no problems! Hailing originally from Minneappolis, but now calling Hollywood, CA home, Har Mar is no stranger to Detroit, and has toured here numerous times before.
He said he loved Detroit and all the house parties
with friends that happen after the shows here.
How would you describe your music to people who haven't heard it?
Brutal Sexual R&B

How was it working with Celebs Eva Mendez, Alia Shawkat and Eric Wareheim in your latest video 'Tall Boy'?
Really easy & relaxed, they are all friends of mine.

Favorite Detroit Memory?
When he ended up randomly welding a statue at 5am in the morning wasted with friends.
Don't worry kids, no one was hurt.
Who's idea was it to have Bang! Bang! Eche! come on tour and support you?
I had heard them through my booking agent, and really liked them.
Har Mar Superstar put on a great show. I loved watching him slowly take layers of clothing off,
i like it when men take their clothes off,
the anticipation and the beer, got me excited!!
It ended with Har Mar wearing only his underwear.
Success. Great times!
Har Mar's latest album 'Dark Touches' is in stores now.

Bang! Bang! Eche!

We hooked up with Bang! Bang! Eche! @ The Magic Stick on Monday night.

Hailing from our hometown of Christchurch, New Zealand!!
The four members Zach, Charlie, T'nealle & James are from OUR hometown of Christchurch, New Zealand!! So you know we were overly excited to meet them! This was their first time in Detroit, and they admitted it was the 'scariest city they've ever been too!!' (and they've been on tour around the world a few times now)... admittedly there was an incident with a homeless person that brought them to this point...

This young Dance-Punk band were genuine and down to earth, and put on a great show!! The energy and talent was wicked! Bang! Bang! Eche! were really awesome live and i definitely encourage people to go and see them if they have the chance!

So which New Zealand Bands would you recommend
Detroit Rock City to listen to, besides you guys?!

'The Mint Chicks', 'Die! Die! Die!', 'Thought Creature', 'Street Chant' & 'Bandicoot'

What the biggest difference about being in US?

Everyone here really treats us like shitty kids, since we're all under 21 and playing in bars here. (In NZ and most other places we tour, the drinking age is 18)

Sweet chilli thai sauce from subway

What's the most memorable gig you've ever played?

Our last show of the tour in Germany last year, all our equipment started to break and we ended up improvising 2 new songs that we've never played before. Like actual songs with versus, choruses and bridges etc that were good!! Wish we could remember what they were...

Who would most likely get into a fight?

James.
He just got into a fight on Halloween night in Montreal, CA,
but he blames the 10.1% alcohol beer he was drinking that night.

How did you come up with your band name?

Zach says Bang Bang Eche is the name of the only known
Hare Krishna Porn Film in existence... Check it out if you can find it..

Bang! Bang! Eche! New EP "Sonic Death Cunttt" is now available online @ www.bangbangeche.com or instore, CHECK IT OUT! IT'S GOOD!!!
