Hip Hop & Comics A Great Combination

Green Brain which recently relocated to a new location in Dearborn, is one of Detroit's best comic stores for both indie and mainstream comics. They also have a couple of the nicest comic shop owners with Dan and Katie who are always willing to chat and suggest comics worth your time.

Best of all they put on awesome events at their shop and they have a great one coming up on Sunday, March 1st. Nerdy comic hip hop stars, Adam WarROCK with Mikal kHill will be rocking the comic shop floor at 7pm. This is part of their Grumpy Old Men and it's a free show.

Adam WarROCK and Mikal kHill rap about your favorite comic super heroes and life in general, I'm very impressed with their backing music as well as the quality of their raps. Each of them have a ton of free music at their websites and you can find them on Spotify, so check them out, then come on out and join the nerd herd.

Leighton Meester performing at the Magic Bag on Monday, February 23

Leighton Meester's days as the star of a teenage CW drama are long gone. After an incredibly successful run on Broadway with James Franco in Of Mice And Men, Meester is ready to reintroduce herself — this time as a musical muse.

Her debut album, Heartstrings, dropped on October 27th. For nine tracks, Meester puts her pop past behind her and instead treads nicely in the singer/songwriter waters. It's contemporary folk with some serious star power. Her approach is gentle and refreshing. Compared to other major names out there, Meester's hype machine was relatively quiet. But, it has paid off in spades. She's kept her audience guessing and that's the best kind of hype an artist can have, really.

Heartstrings is a dreamy singer-songwriter narrative of guarded love, irony and heartache. Written by Meester and produced by Jeff Trott (Sheryl Crow, Augustana), the nine-song album bares the influence of such artists as Stevie Nicks, Tori Amos, Neil Young and Joni Mitchell. "I wrote Heartstrings as a process of relief, and working with Jeff allowed the songs themselves to grow as much as they could, which was considerable,” says Leighton. “Our approach was to flesh out the atmosphere around the feeling of each song with preproduction and then added the spontaneity of a live room for recording."

Interview: Single Mothers

Today marks the first in hopefully a series of shows, concerts, and events in 2015 where I tell you not to fuck up. Don't sit at home drinking light beer pretending to enjoy another episode of Scrubs. Don't wake up on Friday without a hangover. Do trudge through the snow to The Magic Stick for Single Mothers. The Canadian band, which was just nominated for a Juno award in the Metal/Hard Music Album of the Year category, was recently announced as a performer at The Pitchfork Music Festival. I selfishly and briefly spoke with front man and sometime gold-digger (literally), Drew Thomson, about my two favorite Single Mothers songs and what makes him so angry.

Motor City Blog: Lets talk about the song "Half-Lit", where did that idea come from? It seems to paint a sad picture of drugs and love.

Drew Thomson: It kind of happened really quickly. We recorded our album in London, Ontario and that song wasn't going to be on the album. We actually wrote it in the studio really quickly and it turned out to be the single. It came out really fast and I think that's just a testament to our band. The less thought that you put into things the more successful you get, sometimes.

MCB: Another standout song that's not on your latest album that I'm really into is "Christian Girls",
what is the concept for this song?

DT: Well that one, just like "Half-Lit", I wrote on the spot in the studio. I had completely different lyrics for that song and nobody liked them so I just kind of free-styled them. That's another popular song that was just written on the spot. I was hungover and was hanging out with a certain crowd at the time and that song is just about the night before.

MCB: Oh, okay. I really enjoy that song

DT: Thanks, a lot!

MCB: The first review I read about Single Mothers said that you guys all walked out and looked angry. What exactly is the fuel that makes you so angry, and how do you keep doing that night after night?

DT: (Laughs) I think when you're playing this type of music, as the lyricist, it's easy to kind of channel that angrier side of you, I guess. I don't know, I don't put that much thought into it. Usually the band starts writing a song and I'll add to it and it becomes kind of angry. Or maybe I'm just an angry guy, I don't know.

Single Mothers is playing The Magic Stick on Thursday, February 19th. Tickets are $10/$13, all ages. Don't fuck up.

Band Intro - Heart Beach

Australia is a long way from the motor city, but when music is as good as Heart Beach it deserves some local attention.

Band members Jonathon McCarthy (guitar / vocals), Claire Jansen (bass / vocals) and Christopher Wessing (drums / guitar / drum machine) formed Heart Beach in their hometown of Hobart, Tasmania in 2013. Since then the trio has released a number of singles and have been featured on compilations put out by local record labels, Rough Skies Records and Wrong Place (Right Time) Records. “Away” was recorded at Head Gap Studios in Melbourne in December 2014. Recently Everett True (Collapse Board, Plan B) had this to say about Heart Beach:

My press release didn't credit this quote describing them, but I would say it's a perfect description....“this music, this Heart Beach, is anything but difficult to get into: scintillating shimmering shivering girl-pop pop harmonies, slightly abrasive but only cos they refuse to add the fifth spoon, slightly sparse just so you can recall what a glorious moment in time that first Breeders album was, slightly sexy because all great music is slightly sexy. Melodies and songs and words to immediately love and immediately forget.”

Heart Beach is set to release their debut self-titled full length on March 20, 2015. Let's hope a US tour including Detroit follows.

Jazz Cafe is proud to announce an evening of Detroit Power Pop with the legendary Troy Gregory fronted band, The Witches and eccentric singer songwriter's Ken Stanley and His Loud Band, featuring an evening amped up hooks and excellent songwriting, Thursday, February 26th doors at  8 PM

Troy Gregory has made his mark on the Detroit musical landscape by being one of the most versatile musicians working having spent hitches in The Dirtbombs, Prong, The Swans, Killing Joke and the late, Kim Fowley.

The Witches are Gregory's go-to defacto home band though, where elements of Big Star mesh with BritPop sensibilities to create pure Power Pop for picky people.

Ken's Loud Band - Wyandotte native and former "Only A Mother" singer songwriter Ken Stanley's self proclaimed Loud Band- which includes another OAM member, drummer extraordinaire, Doug Gourlay are similarly endowed with a 70's Rock sensibility like The Witches. The touchstone is the 70's-the length and width of it, from Post-psychedelic to Glam to Punk and everything else that seemed to help shape Rock's greatest decade- add the post-ironic lyrics and Ken Stanley and his Loud Band seems to be some great lost band that we all should have heard of, but somehow never were. Add to that, the decidedly artful lo-fi home recordings almost make it seem that these are really from some weird parallel Rock Universe.

ABOUT A HOST OF PEOPLE
A Host of People is a Detroit based theater company focused on the creation of devised, original, multidisciplinary theater. The company is made up of codirectors Sherrine Azab and Jake Hooker and, thankfully, a host of people. Their artistic work has lived everywhere from a storefront window near Times Square in New York to a disused hair salon in Berlin, their own home, community gardens, and traditional performance spaces like On the Boards (Seattle), The Kitchen (NYC), HERE Arts Center (NY), Dixon Place (NYC), The Bushwick Starr (NYC), The Chocolate Factory (NYC), ArtLabJ (Detroit), and Detroit Contemporary.

In addition to producing 12 devised shows a year, we curate two programs: Performance, Potluck and Punch and The Kreative Kool Aid. 3P is a winter series that pairs two short contemporary performances in our home and invites our neighbors for the price of a dish to share. The Kreative KoolAid provides a space for collective learning, gathering together Detroit arts organizations to participate in national conversations, online summits and webinars important to the cultural sector and the "creative economy." After the event we pose the question "did we drink that KoolAid?"

A Host of People is also a Detroit Knight Arts Challenge Award winner for their upcoming show The Harrowing, a piece that will tour community gardens in Detroit premiering in August 2015.
A Host of People locates our work around the idea that "alternative," or "experimental" artmaking is not the elitist practice it is so often made out to be, but inherently populist.
A Host of People strives to offer work that gives the viewer agency in their interpretation, as we work to entertain. We invite our audience into our art as we would guests into our home, whether it is in our house, on the street, in a gallery or in a theater.

Press outlets throughout Los Angeles reported widely on the concert heaping the accolades high. LA Record opined "Cheetah Chrome…got the party started…" And The Los Angeles Beat wrote "There are still few things in life more thrilling than the opening riffs to "What Love Is" and "Sonic Reducer" and, like Williamson, he still plays with piss and vinegar. It was a night for old wounds opening up, bleeding, and feeling new again."
Now Cheetah is hitting the road to play the mid West including Chicago and his hometown of Cleveland, Ohio. His backing band will be The Bulemics who are Gerry Atric on vocals; Wes Texas on rhythm guitar; Ginchy on lead guitar; Rob Graves on bass guitar and Machete on drums.

His latest release is titled, SOLO, and includes cuts from a 1996 recording session produced by Genya Ravan (with executive producer Hilly Kristal) and from a Nashville session in 2010 featuring Sylvain Sylvain (New York Dolls), Lez Warner (The Cult), and Sean Koos (Joan Jett and The Blackhearts). The EP came out the same day as the CBGB movie. His autobiography, Cheetah Chrome: A Dead Boy's Tale: From the Front Lines of Punk Rock, was published in 2010.
Plowboy Records is helmed by Eddy Arnold's grandson Shannon Pollard, Cheetah Chrome (Creative Director/A&R Director), along with professor, author and country music expert Don Cusic.

Show Review: Ponyshow, B One Ballroom, Jan 12

Ponyshow played at B One Ballroom last night and my ears are still ringing. This is surprising to me because it was such a short set, so maybe my aging ears are just getting more sensitive. On that subject, I’ll tell you about another sensitivity for these aging ears and that is discerning  good, raw alternative music, which is what Ponyshow delivered in spades.

Before I get to Ponyshow, Le Voyage warmed up the show with a set of good, modern progressive rock.

Ponyshow is Jason Stollsteimer's (The Hounds Below and Von Bondies) new band that also features the drummer from Von Bondies.

They haven’t had much time to create a bunch of songs, but they have been able to establish their sound of energetic, alt rock that dials in on bands like the Pixies and Superchunk. Jason told me beforehand, the band hadn’t practiced together recently and wasn’t sure what to expect, but as usual, he was underselling the goods.

From the second, Ponyshow took the stage they set forth on a path of destructive buzzsaw beauty. The third member of Ponyshow, Leann Banks, whom I hadn’t seen play before, shared vocals with Jason and brought her own brashness to the stage as a whirling dervish on bass. Throughout their set, drummer Donny Blum, played with a veracity and a wide smile that defined the night for everyone in attendance.

Jackie Stahl & The White Russians CD Release and Concert!

Dirty Americana artist Jackie Stahl is back with a new CD! Jackie Stahl and his band The White Russians just released a 5-song covers EP called "Used" and will be performing their eclectic versions of classic songs at a concert on Saturday, February 21, 9 p.m. at PJ's Lager House.

Opening the show is the surf rock group known as Ponzi, along with alternative-country act, Poor Player. The White Russians take the stage at midnight to perform their "Dirty Americana" music and celebrate the release of their second record.

Jackie Stahl & The White Russians is the project of veteran musician Matthew Stahl whose vast work includes playing drums in the bands The Blue Collar Boys, Catfish Mafia, Bixy Lutz, and Jennifer Westwood & The Waycross Georgia Farmboys, just to name a few. After learning to play the piano, he began writing and recording songs in his home studio. For his second release he re-assembled the band to include new musical colleagues: guitarist Niko Eklund, bassist Jeremy Mackinder and drummer Max Bauhof. He recruited musician Jason Charboneau to play cello and guitar and join him on the record.

The band plays what they describe as "Dirty Americana" music, influenced by Detroit rock, country, blues, jazz, and soul. The new CD, "Used," however, is a totally different excursion that features five selected cover songs done in their own style."'Used' is the title of our follow-up EP of new arrangements to some of my favorite old classics. As the title suggest, these songs are worn, tattered and slightly distressed. And most importantly I'm saying hey, I'm not the original owner here," Stahl says.

The band covers a variety of songs that range from R&B to '70s hard rock to '80s electronic rock. Featured are; "Youngblood" by The Coasters, "Hair of the Dog" by Nazareth, "Thursday" by Morphine, "Big Boss Man" by Jimmy Reed and Luther Dixon and Depeche Mode's "Personal Jesus." The EP was produced by Stahl and Max Bauhof, engineered by Bauhof and Jimmy Dixon, and mastered by Jim Kissling. It was recorded at Homestead Studios.

PJ's Lager House located at 1254 Michigan Ave. in Detroit. Bar: 313-961-4668 www.pjslagerhouse.com. 21 & over patrons welcome. Cover for the show is $5. CDs will be for sale for $6.

At the end of February, they'll go on a North American tour, which will include a stop at Austin's SXSW.
