During an illustrious career spanning three decades, Duran Duran have remained at the forefront of popular music, consistently pushing the creative envelope and breaking new ground.
Since their inception, the band have sold over 70 million albums, recorded countless hit records, received numerous accolades, and have been presented with no fewer than five prestigious “Lifetime Achievement” awards (MTV Video Music Award, Q Magazine, The BRITS, Ivor Novello, Spanish Ondas).

On their current studio album, Red Carpet Massacre (Epic Records) they have collaborated with top producers Timbaland and Nate ‘Danja’ Hills, as well as long-time Duran fan Justin Timberlake, creating a record that has garnered them some of the best reviews of their career.
Now on the road, with their Red Carpet Massacre World Tour well underway, Duran Duran are returning to US shores for a 22-date run with a spectacular new production that will showcase their latest record alongside all of the hits from their extensive catalogue. SEVEN SIGNATURES: PASSIONS IN PAINTING - Lawrence Street Gallery - Fri May 2nd 6-9pm

SEVEN SIGNATURES: PASSIONS IN PAINTING
Show Dates : April 30 - May 31
Opening Reception (public invited)
Friday May 2nd 2008
6:00 - 9:00 p.m.
22620 Woodward
Ferndale
248-544-0394

Lawrence Street Gallery will host “Seven Signatures: Passions in Painting, a group exhibition from April 30 – May 1 with an artistsʼ reception on Friday, May 2 from 6:00 - 9:00 pm.
Painting can be a lonely endeavor, but these seven women artists have a long history together painting, selling, exhibiting, and sharing weekly studio time at the Birmingham Bloomfield Art Cener to offer stimulating critiques, inspiration and encouragement to each other.
They are all members of the Birmingham Society of WomenPainters (a group that begin in 1944 and was instrumental in establishingthe BBAC).
The artists are:
Elizabeth Sylvester and Emily Patz of Beverly Hills, Janet Clarke of Birmingham
Lillian Moran and Marica Tournay of Troy
Margaret Kelleher of Bloomfield Hills
Fran Nicolson of Bingham Farms

Fran Nicolson writes,”I have been painting for over 40 years, in oils, watercolors and pastels. My whole life has been in the arts. When my children were young it was hard to find time to paint so I joined the BBAC and it has been my second home.”
She has been in numerous juried exhibitions as well as one-person shows.

Janet Clarke writes “I paint subjects from nature. Floral bouquets are always painted from fresh flowers in my studio or outdoors. Landscapes are painted on location and from my current sketch book. Her acrylics and watercolors are in many private collections and she has exhibited in numerous juried and one-person exhibitions throughout her career.

Elizabeth Sylvester writes, “I have painted for over 45 years from newlywed apartment to full house to empty nest. Art has been my lifeline throughout life's richest joys and deepest losses. My work has developed from realism to impressionism and on to abstract experimentation.” Elizabeth has been involved with the BBAC for many years and is the current President of the Birmingham Society of Women Painters.

Emily Patz writes: “My recent work includes using acrylic paint on wood and canvas. Collage materials, such as, fabric, paper, sand, crushed eggshells, gel medium, etc. are incorporated throughout the painting using color to unify abstract shapes. Colors used are influenced by my trips to the Southwest.”
Lillian Moran's paintings use areas of color to establish composition. She works in acrylic, sometimes combining it with watercolor and collage.

Marcia Tournay writes, “My paintings begin with a chosen color shape. The next color and shape balance the first. I continue painting until the entire canvas is filled, using the elements of abstract art: intensity, value, and proportion. The next layer will be collage using such items as rice paper, sand, printing techniques, cloth, tissue paper, screen etc. She likes her viewer to be able to read her work; where she began and what layers were successively added.

Margaret Kelleher has Bachelor of Design from U of M and Master of Art from Wayne State University. She has been a member of the BSWP since 1956. She works in watercolor and acrylic. Last year at the BSWP annual exhibit at the BBAC, Margaret was awarded the Best of Show for her painting. Her art reflects her travels to Italy, France, and northwest Canada. She taught previously art to children in Ohio as well as the BBAC.

FREE EVENT: Chicago Children's Choir - The Music Hall

FREE CONCERT
Chicago Children's Choir
Sunday May 4th
2pm

Historic Music Hall Center for the Performing Arts
350 Madison, Detroit, Mi 48226
313 887-8500

More than 40 young singers from the world-renowned Chicago Children’s Choir will be featured guests at the Second Annual Concert of the Detroit Children’s Choir.

Free to the public, the concert will be held at the Music Hall Center for the Performing Arts at 2 p.m. on Sunday, May 4.“As part of our continued effort to reach and support our youth and provide endless opportunities for our young people’s involvement in performing arts, Music Hall Center for the Performing Arts is proud to collaborate with the Detroit Children’s Choir,” said Vince Paul, President and Artistic Director.

“This collaboration doesn’t just engage the young people of southeast Michigan; it creates the condition where great performers and great leaders are born and nurtured!”

A recent study from the Center on Education Policy indicates that the No Child Left Behind law has led to a 16% decline in the time devoted to art and music instruction in Michigan public schools over the last six years.

The loss of the arts and music limits the kinds of skills and capacities children develop in school.Established in 2006, the Detroit Children’s Choir (DCC) uses the discipline of choral singing to enhance self confidence and academic skills while building social awareness in young people in Detroit. During the 2006-2007 school year, DCC operated in four schools in the Detroit Public Schools system – serving a total of 125 children.

The Southwest Neighborhood Choir, a partnership with Living Arts Detroit, is in its second year of operation out of Messiah Church. Now an approved vendor to the Detroit Public Schools, DCC holds in-school choirs in four schools this school year.

In addition, an East Side Neighborhood Choir was formed in 2007 in partnership with Wayne County Community College District’s Eastern Campus. “Connecting children through choir bridges social differences and enhances awareness of different viewpoints,” explained DCC founder Carol Schoch.

“DCC brings together 125 of Detroit’s children in grades 3-8 – representing a wide range of ethnicities, religious and socio-economic levels – in a way that strengthens team building, creativity, social interaction, understanding, and connection.”

This inspirational free event takes place on Sunday, May 4th at 2 PM

We’re planning an exciting day of fun, with a route that shows off some of the highlights of Downtown Detroit! Of course, there’s nothing like the giant Tiger in front of Comerica Park, and we’re right across the street from the magnificent Fox Theater, but you’ll also see Campus Martius, Cobo Hall, Hart Plaza, Greektown and Ford Field.

If all goes well, you may also have the chance to stroll along the incredible new Riverfront walkway! We look forward to seeing you, and we know you’ll be working hard to help us raise $400,000 at the Detroit site!

We have great online fundraising tools in My Participant Center that make it very easy to ask for and receive support, and donations can be turned in through June 13, 2008 (July 18, 2008 if you participate in Traverse City) to qualify for prizes.

Northville's The Morgan Fair features every creepy-sounding instrument you can think of and a strangely calm and clear vocals. With a name like The Copper Thieves, you know this group is from Detroit. Psych out with them on a Thursday night at the PJ's Lager House!"

Poi Dog Pondering pics/interview - Alvin's Detroit

Described as body music Poi Dog Pondering has been creating good vibes since 1986.
PDP started playing music in Hawaii and quickly moved to the main land picking up other members in Austin Texas before settling down in Chicago in 1992.

I was fortunate to sit down and meet Frank Orrall (a founding member) at Alvin's earlier this month before their show. The first thing I noticed was how friendly Frank was, even stopping fans to say hello by name. PDP has an organic process in writing and recording and enjoy traveling and playing on the road. Poi Dog Pondering is a 12 piece band who usually plays sold out shows in Chicago's Vic Theater and the Metro.

When PDP hits the road not all members are able to travel, and "that's the fun part, adapting and staying liquid". The fans agree some traveling from as far away as Ft. Wayne Indian and Toledo, Ohio. "There are about 200 of us who chat online and meet up before shows" said Chris Hernandez "I've been to 50 shows myself", I might mention Chris was setting up to record the show live, something PDP encourages. One fan put it best "If you don't like music, your not going to like this band".-- Amy Palomar

Torch with a Twist - Cliff Bells

Once a month Cliff Bells in Detroit transforms into a Big Top for a traditional Vaudevillian Show. One which not only engages the audience for 3 hours (seems more like 3 minutes) with classic burlesque shows and snake charmers, it spills into the streets at intermission with fire eaters and jugglers.
Torch with a Twist was created by the lovely and talented Grace Detroit who is, of course, a torch singer. Grace had this idea a couple of years ago after an inspiring trip to Burning Man where she met many of the act in this tight nit group. Each performer is responsible for their own costumes and acts and not everyone can make it to every show, so each month is different and I personally want to see a few of those acts over and over again.
You can find Torch with a Twist on myspace and each month at Cliff Bells. This group is taking off, recently performing at the Music Hall's Fringe Fest and now has a few gigs at the Jazz Cafe.
If you haven't seen them do so soon, with an act this great you'll thank me for it.-- Amy Palomar

Words & Rhythms of The D! - Music Hall - Sat April 26th

Words and Rhythms of the D
Saturday, April 26th 2008
WHO? Talented and Artistic Detroit area Students
WHAT? Words and Rhythms of the D
WHERE? McDonalds 14124 Woodward Highland Park, MI 48203
WHEN? Saturday, April 26th, 5-8 PM
WHY? "Words and Rhythms of the D" Was created as a spin-off from the History of the Word - a spoken word play based out of New York that promotes literacy through poetry.
It also has inspired a monthly series that takes place twice a month at the Jazz Cafe at Music Hall and at select McDonald's locations - two Saturdays a month , hosted by local rapper and poet, Fluent.
Music Hall Center for the Performing Arts Education Outreach Program along with McDonalds have created a program that challenges Detroit area students to express their thoughts creatively in an artistic forum where 45 of the best students works will be included in The Music Hall's first-ever anthology of poetry to be published by the sponsor, McDonalds.
Music Hall's Education Outreach Program hopes to inspire artistically inclined students a chance to compete and perform their literary creations in a setting outside of the school and recreation centers, with the ultimate goal of seeing their works published.
In a city that has a literacy rate of 47% and a high school graduation rate of 24.9%, Words and Rhythms of the D is a fun and competitive way to express the feelings through words, in a healthy and fun environment, one that fosters independent, creative activity that may serve as a spark for more students to read, write and retain hope for their academic future
Music Hall Education Outreach Program encourages all of our media friends- including editors and producers, to consider covering this fun and important literary event. If you seek a positive local story, one that focuses on improving the lowly literacy status quo- Words and Rhythms of the D will provide you with a hopeful and inspirational angle

An art installation by

Pembroke Davis

Jason LedbetterJeanette Ohm
Kendall Babl

Exhibition - April 26 to May 17, 2008

Opening Reception - April 26, 6-9pm

The BU-CON Afterfutures Group Inc. demonstrates preparedness for a global collapse of energy and communications infrastructure. Contingencies are examined using scale models, maps, graphs, and examples of BU-CON hardware. The subject of survival is approached with optimism. If organizations such as Halliburton and the Michigan Militia emphasize fear and isolation, BU-CON portrays a clear alternative, embracing the problem of continued human habitation beyond the troubled paradigm of the present.

NEW DETROIT, MI 48207

THE SILVER PIANO - Electric Kalimba Art by Warren Defever, Hitoko Sakai, and Elliot Bergman April 19 Opening Reception 7-11pm

SPREAD THE WORD...

April 19 Opening Reception 7-11pm
April 26 Electric Kalimba performance
April 29 Closing Party
The Silver Piano is an interactive installation / exhibition with kalimbas not only hung on the gallery walls but also with an army of electric kalimbas plugged into amplifiers for all to play
Sometimes referred to as a thumb piano (or mbira, likembe, or sanza), the basic design concept for the kalimba has been around for thousands of years.Inspired by the work of African artists Francis Bebey , Kinshasa'sKonono No.1, as well as American composers Phil Cohran, Yusef Lateef, and Stanley Cowell, three local artists have been hand-craftingelectric kalimbas and have been organizing art exhibits, concerts andinstallations all over the world.Warren Defever, Hitoko Sakai, and Elliot Bergman began makingelectric kalimbas about two years ago.
As members of Detroit faves HIS NAME IS ALIVE and NOMO, these three artists started building their own musical instruments as needed, and soon inquisitive audiences and other musicians wanted to know more about the source of the exoticsounds. They found themselves making more kalimbas and selling themat concerts.
"It got out of hand really quickly," says War, "We've made about two hundred so far. We recently got a grant and did a residency in New York, it was pretty fancy. I'm excited to bring it home to Detroit."
Three events April 19th - 29th provide everything from thousand year old earth-toned electronic music to mountains of droning ringingfeedback.
THE SILVER PIANO is a performance-based piece and acelebration of electricity, traditional music and craft, and magicalvibrations!!!
ARTIST STATEMENT by Warn Defever :
I haven't completely abandoned commercial music or representationalpainting but instead have recently begun a motivational shift fromself-consciously creating objects that were at once explicitlypersonal and (lyrics, songs, photographs, portraits, paintings, etc)to proposing a new relationship between the critic, the collector, andthe casual consumer. The hand crafted kalimba resists persistentassociation and comparison to previous work. Minimalist silver andwooden boxes with small metal tines do not quite confer withsculptural analytic expectations. My previous work thrived in aspecial area I made my own, formed between alternative popular cultureand the imagined mainstream. This new work demonstrates interest inthe specific world of solid objects, objects not in the domain ofabstract insights and symbolic value. The electric kalimba islabor-intensive, an anonymous investment of craft, and possibly noteven recognized by the high-art tradition which celebrates qualitiessuch as illusion, religious feeling, dreaming, and artistic creation.

CHILD BITE RUINED MY LIFE by Jeff Nolan - Sat April 12th 2008

No camera no video right (nah - we have video from A2 that Jeff shot a few weeks back that we opted not to post at the time because he was planning this interview so look for it back here tomorrow)

3/12/08
CHILD BITE RUINED MY LIFE
by MCB contributor Jeff Nolan

CHILD BITE, BLASE SPLEE, HOTCHACHA, & TAKE OFF YOUR PANTS @ THE CROFOOT PIKE ROOM

After walking a few blocks through some sort of rain/slush hybrid and arguing with the guy at the door that I was in fact on the list to get in, I was in no mood for my digital video camera to take a shit on me. It did and that is why you, dear reader, are not watching this right now.

Blase Splee began the evening with their quirky set of catchy songs that bounce from genre to genre without really committing to one or another. All members were dressed as sharply and as tightly as they played, and even though that sounds awkward and a little creepy its fitting of their unique sound. The strangest thing I find about Blase Splee is that I have inadvertently been hanging out with and listening to these guys for a year or two at their neighbor's house in Royal Oak without really realizing that they had a band. Even better is that they really know how to play.Following Blase Splee was an all girl band named Hotchacha. They vaguely mentioned being from Cleveland or Cincinnati or some such Ohio city, but were just as incoherent when I inquired with the guitarist.

They had a very playful and energetic stage presence with just a tinge of bittersweet angst. How can you not love someone who screams for 3 minutes about the guy who dumped her while chugging a High Life and bouncing around like a wounded animal? The next set was performed by a band who failed to mention their name, but it was just as well as I wouldn't have wanted to remember it after listening to 30 minutes of their shrill and obnoxious tunes. Plus the guitarist was too cool to talk with someone from MCB (evidently he works for another website which shall not be named).Child Bite. Holy Hell, these guys have got it going on. I first saw them a few weeks back when they opened up for Man Man at the Blind Pig.

That show did not nearly do them justice after seeing them at the Pike Room. They started out by raffling off an I-Pod (who does that?) giving out stickers by trading away personal belongings and introducing a bizarre cast of characters who wandered about the room. The characters included a girl in a gold sequin dress with bananas on her head, an asian guy with some sort of weird hairy skull-cap and snakes for arms, and a big fabric rectangle covered in eyeballs who could barely walk. It was a "mythological characters meets Fruit of the Loom" they said. The set was equally unusual and fun.

They featured at times up to 8 or 9 band members who all knew just when their parts were to stop going crazy and play. Constant antics onstage ranged all over the board from dancing/drumming cows throwing streamers at the audience, the guitarist quitting the band ("fuck you guys I quit") to distribute tambourines to everyone who would take one, popping a giant balloon, getting the entire crowd to sit on the floor and chant with the band, to inviting everyone in the crowd to jump onto the stage and go nuts with them (they did).
Wow. If I were you I would be pissed that my camera wasn't working.

"Folk music doesn't mean what it used to; here's six nights of acts from around the country and right here in Detroit that defy easy categorization. Drawing on influences that range from acoustic psyche to ethnic folkloric, these revivalist and innovators share a love of raw roots music in all its forms.

Friday, April 18:
The Volebeats, Misty Lyn and the Big Beautiful $7
Rock bands with country music hearts! Featuring the venerable gents of The Volebeats in a fairly rare performance. Misty Lyn and the Big Beautiful play melancholy songs that pair rootsy, acoustic Americana with electric guitar, pedal steel and cello.

Saturday, April 19
Nick Schillace CD release show with Eric Carbonara, Mike Tamburo $7
Great night of Tocoma style finger-picking guitar and trance inducing dulcimer. I think I'll be sitting in on Nick's set, playing music (from our tour as Duo Au Duos) that blends folk techniques and improvisation. Traditional and experimental acoustic music also figure into the music of Pittsburgh's Mike Tamburo, who has recently been pursuing the hammer dulcimer as his main instrument. Eric Carbonara is currently on tour with Nick; he favors the classical guitar nylon-string sound, and draws influence from Flamenco music, but creates original music that is spare and develops gradually.

SundayApril 20:
Tipton Saxophone Quartet, Frank Pahl's Scavenger Trio, Orpehum Bell $7-10
Formerly The Billy Tipton Memorial Saxophone Quartet, the Tiptons are an all female saxophone group that plays a wide variety of music. For this show, they'll pull heavily from their ethnic folkloric bag, with traditional Macedonian and Bulgariian brass tunes. Frank Pahl is one of Detroit's most unique musicians who spans several generes. For this night's performance, he's pulling out our aggregate The Scavenger Trio with Marko Novachcoff and myself. The focus will be on Frank's great instrumental compositions in our two-man one-man-band configuration, with Marko on misc. winds and cello. Orpheum Bell utilize unusual instruments like saw, auto harp and clarinet to create a music that is both old-timey and unexpected. They have a picture of a strohviol on their website; could we have two bands in one night that perform on this rare instrument?

Monday, April 21:
Jennie Knaggs and the Sure Shots, Renee Bertsch, Matt Jones $6
Jennie Knaggs is Detroit's honky tonk and western swing singer par excellence. Her new group The Sure Shots features Nick Schillace and myself backing her up on a set of originals, coutry classics and labor tunes. Renee Bertsch plays hauntingly simple original songs with a mostly electric band. Great writing that calls to mind Oldham, Edith Frost and Tara Jane O Neal.Matt Jones

Tuesday, April 22:
American Mars, Birdgang $6
For more than a decade, American Mars have mined song-writerly rock music like The Replacements, The Jayhawks and Ryan Adams to create accessable, electric roots music. Tasty pedal-steel is supplied by Dave Feeny, the man who gave me my start in Detroit rock! Birdgang have pop overtones that recall the softer, introspective moments of the British Invasion.

Wednesday, April 23:
Jack Rose, D.Charles Speer and the Helix (members of Sunburned Hand of the Man and No Neck Blues Band) $8
Ex-Pelt guitarist Jack Rose has established himself leading exponent of American Primitive guitar. The techniques of great Country Blues musicians like Charle Patton and Blind Willie Johnson collide with the more experimental tendancies of John Fahey and Robbie Basho.
The members of D. Charles Speer and the Helix are best known for their experimental work in the groups The No Neck Blues Band and Sun Burned Hand of the Man, but have changed course into blues and folk music. Mr.Speers vocals are well suited to the new direction; his rich baritone sounds suprisingly natural in this context

Thursday, April 24: Jewels and Binoculars: Lindsey Horner, Michael Moore, Michael Vatcher play music of Bob Dylan $10 suggested
This trio of improvisers close out the festival with a set of the music of Bob Dylan radically recontextualized. New York bassist Lindsey Horner, who's played with Muhal Richard Abrahms and Bill Frisell, teams up with Amsterdam ex-pats Michael Moore (Han Bennink, Marilyn Crispell, Gerry Hemingway) on reeds and Michael Vatcher (John Handy, John Zorn, Tom Cora, Tristan Honsinger) on percussion.

An emblematic end to the week!

Buy 3 or more shows in advance for $5 each.
Available at Bohemian National Home.
Doors for all shows at 8:30 pm.

The Rite Spring - CPOP Detroit - Sat April 19th

©POP Gallery Invivtes You To Celebrate The Raw Energy of Life With:
The Rite of Spring
The Aggressively Bold and Brilliantly Idyllic Brushwork of Miguel Linares
"Finally, Spring has sprung and in celebration of a wicked winter’s end ©POP Gallery presents the classical bucolic expressionism of artist, inventor and philanthropist, Miguel Linares, in his inaugural CPOP solo exhibition, “The Rite Of Spring” commencing with an elegant champagne and appetizer opening soiree on Saturday, April 19 at 7PM.
Born in Granada, Spain in 1951, Miguel Linares leads a rare and extraordinary life rife with accomplishment and true creative genius. Miguel expresses his profound concern for the human condition in his career as an inventor, engineer and manufacturer with altruistic creations that run the gamut from hi-tech plastic armor for military vehicles to affordable prosthetics such as human joint replacements, which he’s developed at a fraction of other manufacturers’ cost.
He is a founding member and Executive Vice-President of VPTECH in Auburn Hills and Stratech Manufacturing and Tooling, both specializing in hi-tech injection molding, engineering, and world-class 3DM inventions, consequently holding many patents. As an accomplished painter and sculptor, Linares has exhibited at The Museums of Sevilla, Madrid and Bilboa in Spain, The Institute of Design in New York City and the Detroit Artists Market where he was also a Board member.
After studying painting and sculpture at the University of Granada and drafting and architecture at the Institute of America in Barcelona, Linares emigrated to Detroit in 1971 and continued his education at Wayne State University Medical School. He then switched curriculum and studied painting and sculpture under the great triumvirate of instructors, Russell Keeter, Jay Holland and Tony Williams at The Society Of Arts and Crafts (College for Creative Studies).
Their influence stressed the skill of faithfully rendering the human figure to the point where a Keeter student knew the subtleties of the human body as well as any medical student. The CCS experience also informed his medically inventive side as much as his artistic side, where his paintings ironically involve primarily landscapes and still-lifes in lieu of the human form.
Linares’ sculptural work however, exemplifies his training through true deftness in his realization of the human form in three dimensions.Linares’s inventions utilize recyclable and organic substances like sanitized medical waste, simple bamboo and even straw in his many patented plastic-based alternatives for industry, such as plastic I-beams and lightweight automobile and aerospace materials, or in medicine, with affordable prosthetic joint replacements, and especially in his humanitarian inventions like the portable plastic, self-sustaining house for uses in Africa and other distressed areas.
These houses include a water collection, filtration and holding system, as well as solar powered lamps for both inside and outside these extremely light-weight and inexpensive shelters. Like all his forward thinking innovations, they share the commonalties of problem solving, ergonomics and environmental consciousness. But his paintings most clearly resonate with his reverence of nature. Creating inventions that work to improve people’s health, quality of life and environment requires a deep understanding and love of the natural world, and Miguel Linares most boldly exemplifies this ardor in his rich landscapes, thick with color and subtle movement, an effect that his generous use of an impasto-style application achieves.
While the works seem Post-Impressionist upon first glance, one can also see the influence of Expressionism in his sometimes gently, sometimes violently undulating horizons, or shimmering flora. The Rite Of Spring is a welcome offering after a long cold winter, reminding us of how inexorably connected we all are to our environment.
Miguel Linares creates an idyllic vision of nature through his art, and as an inventor he strives to bring our world a bit closer to that vision in reality.
Along these lines, the artist will donate 100% of his earnings from the exhibit to: Edna Adan Maternity Hospital in Hargeysa, Somalia.More details, source material and imagery of the art and inventions of Miguel Linares are available electronically upon request.

MCB-VIDEO Mirepoix Cooking School @ Holiday Market

Mirepoix - Holiday Market's Cooking School
Last Friday night, I had the privilege of attending one of Mirpoix's cooking classes on behalf of MOTORCITYBLOG.net. The theme of the class was "Cooking with Beer", in honor of St. Patty's Day. I had no idea what to expect as I am not a well seasoned cook nor have ever attended a cooking class before.

All I can say is, what an absolute treat it was. I was so impressed with the classroom/kitchen, chefs, delicious recipes, ingredients and equipment used. As for the chefs: Chef So and Chef Dave, they were absolutely wonderful. They both went above and beyond to make thegroup's experience both insightful and fun. The class was all hands on. At the end of it all, the food was dished out and like a family, we all sat around the table. We savored every bite and delighted over our culinary accomplishments of the evening. I even got to take home a doggy bag. I would definitely attend another Mirepoix class in the near future.

Come in Wonder - Leave in Awe - 601 Gallery Detroit - Fri April 4th - 7pm-MN

Come in Wonder - Leave in Awe
Friday April 4th 2008 - 7pm - Midnight

STUDIO 601
601 Washington Blvd (at Congress and across from Cobo Hall)
Detroit, MI 48226

Studio 601 will present the artwork of Red, Julie Fournier and Ed Gardiner.

Red
Red is a prolific artist whom expresses herself in many mediums. She writes, paints, models, sings and is currently exploring color, texture, and self-expression in abstract design. Red has lived in the city, country, and suburbia. She moved back to Detroit when she left home at the age of sixteen. She started traveling overseas at the age of seventeen, even staying in Lomé, Togo during the summer of 2006 to do some work with the local elementary schools.
Red uses various art forms as a window to her soul and an outlet to purge her memories and feelings. She is a passionate and eccentric lady with a fiery zeal for life who thrives on opportunities to dance with change and flirt with chaos.

Julie Fournier
Born in Detroit in 1965, Julie Fournier's work explores how innovations and events of the last 40 years have impacted our lives, psyches and relationships with one another. She founded SmilingEyes Studio in 1997, and in 2005 graduated from Wayne State University with a degree in Industrial Design, Cum Laude. Known by many for her oil paintings, she's far from satisfied practicing one discipline; Julie considers herself a multi-media artist. Neo Realism best describes her style. Referred to as a "news reporter" because she is inspired by often overlooked aspects of daily life, she challenges traditional notions of beauty, social class and human interaction through her work as an artist.

Ed Gardiner (Edge)
From posters in Detroit in the early 70's to post apocalyptic sculptures of found objects from the back alleys of Rodeo Drive in 80's LA, Edge has weathered and flourished in the uncertain currents of pop culture and the edgier underground world of outsider art.
An artist, film-maker and producer of some of the hippest events in San Francisco, LA and Detroit, Edge has lived many a Forrest Gump moment and continues to set the pace as he creates an artful life.
Detroit is his birthplace, his home and as a city between breaths where anything is possible, the canvas he has chosen to work with. It is here in Detroit that Edge has been reborn, a warrior for a created world, a world where art, music and culture reign.

Concerned by the suggestion that modern people are visually oriented to the point of other-sensory atrophy, Sense of Site aims to explore and develop all five senses, particularly in relationship to our understanding of physical spaces. Inspired by such installation artists as Ann Hamilton and Bernhard Gal, ten students from Wayne State University will appeal to our senses while exploring spatial relationships.

ART DETROIT NOW - May 8-10 2008

Art Detroit NOW
May 8th -10th 2008

3 Days>>>100 Galleries>>>1000's Of Artists

Make sure to pencil this one into your calender...WOW!

I heard about this a few months ago and was invited to come down to the big planning meeting for this killer event. MOTORCITYBLOG is more about promoting and coverage than helping to plan something like this....what we will be doing is hitting the streets hard (like we always do) to shed some light on the detroit art scene (hey---we have been doing that already!)

Our plan is to have 4-6 video people out there interviewing the artists - gallery owners/operators - patrons to get everyone's thoughts on detroit art - the new movement

Check out the Art Detroit Now online for all the details of "The Blowout" of detroit art scene.

Here are a few videos of the art shows covered by MOTORCITYBLOG.net
