MCB-VIDEO - MOTORCITYBLOG on Fox Sports Net

MCB was contacted by one of the Fox Sports Net producers while in town for the Seattle Mariners/Detroit Tigers series last week and they wanted show footage from local detroit bands to produce a local scene showcase. So we gave them a bunch of our videos and they made up a shortie that ran in Seattle and on Direct TV highlighting some of the bands here in town.

The Budget Sinners - PJ's Lager House - Fri May 30th 9pm

The Budget Sinners
Friday May 30th 2008

PJ's Lager House
1254 Michigan Ave
Detroit MI
313.961.4668

The Budget Sinners is fronted by Detroit veteran Tim Pak (ex-Salt miners, Angry Red Planet) on vocals and guitar, features hard-hitting drumming from Ryan Looney and the bass playing of Ed Sertage. Eric James Myers, previously of Warhorses, brings the licks on lead guitar.

The Budget Sinners' music is Americana at its best! Featuring songs of love, work, parties, crimes, hard times and salvation TBS define working life and times. It's time to break out the whiskey.

w/Caleb Travers and Big City Lights & the Blue Rubys

Caleb Travers and Big City Lights caught their first break in 2007 after receiving an encore at an open mic night and were then given an opening slot for the Austin-based indie-pop quartet What Made Milwaukee Famous. The group has also shared the stage with Bobby Bare, Jr. Come check out one of alt-country's rising stars before they hit the pages of No Depression.

The Blue Rubys are a California-based female trio, originally from the shores of Lake Erie, come back to Michigan. The group plays standout three-part harmonies and rotating lead vocals with a rootsy, bluesy back-to-basics foundation. They feature bass, guitar, mandolin, fiddle and harmonica and sing about small town life, love, tilt-a-whirls and teenage runaways.

STOP THE INCINERATOR RALLY- TOMORROW @ Spirit of Detroit 4-6pm

Something stinks and it’s not just the trash!

The lease on the Detroit Incinerator is up for renewal on June 1, 2008.

The Detroit City Council has adopted a new plan for trash disposal which includes recycling and shutting down the incinerator.

Our Mayor wants to continue using this MONSTER POLLUTING/ASTHMA MACHINE!

We need to act NOW! Call and write to the Detroit City Council and thank them for moving us forward. Call and write the Mayor, ask him to reconsider the health, welfare and finances of Detroit. -The Detroit incinerator is contributing to the rising dioxin levels, cancer, asthma, and low birth weights in our neighborhoods.

The asthma rates for the 9 zip codes around the Incinerator are 4 times higher then the Michigan average. Detroit was just designated the ninth most air polluted city in the country. The Detroit Incinerator is the 6th largest pollution source of over 180 facilities in Wayne County monitored by the state. Wayne County is currently in violation of EPA air quality health standards. The Detroit Incinerator annually emits an estimated 600,000 tons of global warming carbon dioxide. The Detroit Incinerator only burns about 70% of the trash put into it and the resulting highly toxic ash (about 30%) goes to a landfill.

Our waste is one of the biggest resources for the future. What kind of products could Detroiters produce with the endless supply of this material? Recycling creates 10 times more jobs than incineration. It promotes environmental consciousness and responsibility. Detroit is the only city of the 30 largest cities in the United States that does not provide curbside recycling.

By continuing to burn these easily recycle-able items we will never make a full switch to recycling. We are losing the revenue from recycled raw materials. Again, Detroit will be left behind on one of the biggest movements toward a greener economy.-

Detroit Taxpayers have overpaid for trash disposal by an average of about $50 million per year over the last 20 years. In the fiscal year 2007-2008 Detroit residents are paying over $170/ton for trash disposal – about 5 to 7 times more then the suburbs pay.

If the Incinerator continues to be used the disposal costs are estimated to be 2 to 3 times higher then what the suburbs will pay. About half of the trash burned in the Detroit Incinerator is from suburban cities, about 50% of the toxic emissions such as lead, mercury and cancer causing dioxins are from suburban trash.

Real Detroit Weekly is a returning third year sponsor of Movement, and will feature the return of the Underground Stage, known now as the Real Detroit Stage, sponsored by Real Detroit Weekly."

Real Detroit Weekly is a strong supporter of Detroit's Movement event, and is committed to sponsoring a successful festival that reaches an amazing fan base," stated Jason Huvaere, festival director.

"We are thrilled to have Real Detroit on board, once again, as an event sponsor."This year's diverse and eclectic roster showcases established electronic acts and vanguard artists who exemplify the event's global fan appeal, confirming the Detroit festival as a destination for the international techno circuit."As an original sponsor for Movement/DEMF, we have witnessed the growth of the festival from a relatively local event to an international celebration of electronic music in downtown Detroit," said John Badanjek, Publisher, Real Detroit Weekly.

"Every year the festival continues to impress us with their unyielding pursuit to improve the overall festival experience through better sound, staging, lighting, and of course talent.

Real Detroit Weekly is honored to present this year's lineup of world-class, homegrown artists to an international audience at the Festival. The fact that the Real Detroit Stage will be moving underground only compliments the stellar lineup. We anticipate the Real Detroit Stage will be banging from the first beats until they shut it down."Real Detroit Weekly – a weekly alternative entertainment-driven magazine – is Detroit's most entertaining source for music, nightlife, movies, fashion, dining and all other things under the pop culture umbrella. Mixing a combination of the city's elements with the suburbs' charm, the editorial attention is a secret formula that features local and national acts as well as pertinent information for Detroit's most loyal and growing audience.

Since 1998 Paxahau has promoted electronic music and has grown to include a web archive, booking agency, record label and an event production company which produces an average of 20 events a year. With a network of alliances and resources that span the globe, Paxahau has emerged as a premier promotions group within the electronic music industry.

Youthville Walk - Fundraiser for Theater Time @ Music Hall -

MUSIC HALL’S THEATER TIME FOR ASPIRING THESPIANS 1 K WALK

Music Hall’s youth educational program, Theater Time, was currently underway with the production of The Wiz, however, due to extreme financial hardship needs to raise $10,000 in order to produce this show which the kids have worked so hard to bring to the stage.

The parents of the Theater Time kids got together and decided to do a 1 kilometer walk around YouthVille next Saturday, May 24th , from 1 to 4 PM, to help raise funds to keep this important Detroit youth education program from closing the curtain.

The children will also use this time for a letter-writing campaign for funding to keep Theater Time up and running. There will be a $25 registration fee for all participants. In addition to contributing to an outreach youth education program, all those who register will receive name recognition in all of Music Hall’s 2008-2009 season programs.

We realize that this is extremely short notice, but expected funding hasn’t materialized so we must try on our own to help keep the current production of “The Wiz” on schedule.

Theater Time is one of Music Hall's charter programs. It began as a two-week summer program that evolved into a year - round initiative fully staffed with two drama instructors, a music director, a vocal instructor and a choreographer. Each session concludes with a final production on Music Hall's main stage. This fruitful evolution that took place within the Theater Time infrastructure has lead to a 90% retention rate with the participating Detroit youth.

YouthVille is located at:

Detroit Youth Foundation
7375 Woodward Suite 2800
Detroit, MI 48202

Ann Arbor’s The Bang! provides the backdrop with a dance party adventure mixing everything from rock’n’roll to ‘60s soul, from BritPop to HipHop.

This is a first for the museum, and the night’s entertainment is in conjunction with the special exhibitions Life’s Pleasures: The Ashcan Artists’ Brush with Leisure, 1895–1925 and Give it a Rest: People at Play in American Prints and Drawings, 1890–1945 (the latter will be open for viewing), each of which features classic images of the ring.

Firewater - Magic Stick - Thursday May 29th

"In 2005, Firewater's Tod A embarked on what would become a 3-year sabbatical through the Middle East, the Indian Subcontinent and South East Asia. Recording with a single microphone and a laptop in his pack, he captured performances with a vast array of musicians across India and Pakistan -- and eventually Turkey and Israel. Writing songs about the world he left behind in the US ("This Is My Life") and politics ("Borneo," "Hey Clown"), his acerbic wit shines on The Golden Hour, elucidating both the beauty and the absurdity of his world."

Firewater's touring band contains members of Skeleton Key, Lounge Lizards, Balkan Beat Box, PJ Harvey, and John Parish's band; and hail from the four corners of the globe: NYC, Tel Aviv, London and Denpasar!

Firewater also set the musical standard for other gypsy punk and world-inflected indie rock noteables such as Gogol Bordello, Balkan Beat Box and Beirut.

Abbie Miller
Masafumi Yukimoto

Curated by Madeline Stillwell

Exhibition – May 24 - June 21, 2008

Opening Reception – May 24th, 6-9pm

The artists deal with basic principles of physics: tension, suspension, cantilever, and centrifugal force. By incorporating physics in their creative processes, they will confront the viewers with conceptual or metaphorical associations regarding existing elemental forces. Scientist, Cosmologist, Artist, and Magician will blend together in this show, providing viewers the opportunity to draw connections between their own so-called "knowns" and "unknowns."

Art Detroit Now - Pictures -Reviews Daniel Ballance

Fine Prints at the Elaine L. Jacob Gallery (WSU)
The Elaine L. Jacob Gallery, located at Wayne State University’s campus, exhibited some very fine prints from numerous artists enrolled, or past enrolled students at the university. The array of prints consisted of almost every technique of printing including etching, mezzotint, drypoint, chine colle, woodcut, lithograph, and screenprinting. Akiko Taniguchi’s work seemed to reveal a sense of spirituality, particularly the pieces “Release of Wisdom” and “Persephone’s Return”, combined with a surrealistic design quality, constructed from etching, mezzotint, drypoint, and chine colle forms of printing. There were also fine works from Chris Papa , who embellished on the techniques of woodcut, lithograph, screenprint, and chine colle to create colorful, and dynamic pieces, such as “Bundle”, and “Carolina”. No matter the artist, each and every work withheld it’s own personality and charm, making for a casual and soothing visual experience at the Elaine L. Jacob Gallerry.

Massi V, The First Recording
By: Daniel Ballance

As an artist bridging the internal world with the external world, successfully, requires much assertion and deliberation. This bridge unites the viewer with a creation, which, upon perceiving, enters the personal space of an onlooker. During the first exhibition from the new MassiV gallery, located at Russel Industrial Center, the artist Chido Johnson provided a spectacle of work titled, Domestified Angst, The First Recording. When asked about the title of the show, Johnson explained his work was a response, and externalization, in the process of dealing with different localities, and the nuances that come with a new affiliation and place. The artist is not new to relocating, in fact, after being born in Africa and living there for the first 5 years of his life, Chido Johnson has not lived anywhere for that span of time since, except for Detroit, where he has taught at the College for Creative Studies, as a professor of sculpture, for the last 5 years.

Upon entering through the open double doors of the gallery, white streaks of paint, made from a customized bicycle, with text treaded tires, pulled your attention into the space. The space was colored black, like a dark night, with dramatic spot lights casted on the works scattered around the space, almost as if walking a dark street with nothing but street lamps to direct you. The white tread marks at the entrance, led the way to the first piece, called “Me, Me, Me”, a little wooden African figure, about a foot tall, resembling “airport art”, described by the artist. Art found in airport stores and shops across the globe, presented for consummation. This act of marketing clearly uproots the meaning and value of a highly thought of item, in relation to the culture, which the product belongs, thus allowing the conceptualized item to become a commodity, much like Buddha figures that have been marketed globally.

The main model to represent Domestified Angst’s premise, was the always, uppity “Smiling Bob”, a marketing tool, who permits a false sense of happiness, received from a dose of Viagra. This false figure mainly represents substitutive bliss in the Post- Modern, consumer world full of instant gratifications and artificiality, and all around the gallery, “Bob’s” were situated in different circumstances. One Bob, called “Squashed Bob”, revealed the head of Bob, carved from marble, being squashed by a wooden chair’s leg, causing an anguished look to radiate from the head’s situation. Another piece including the use of Bob as the subject, was a drawing called “Pumped Bob”, which included Viagra’s representative with an insane, smiling, “Jack Nicholson” like expression coming from “Bob’s” face. This insane look portrayed “Bob” as if he had been filled with an evil influence and false conception of pleasure, while all the susceptible victims, manipulated into needing a product that fixes any marriage, or psychological conflict, had been falsely led.

The brains capacity for imagination is a phenomenon that is best expressed through creation. One work that fulfilled the depths of the imagination, during the first showcase at the MassiV gallery, was “Knock, Knock” a true visual feast which required looking through a peephole, placed in the middle of a door, while sitting on a wooden chair. Through the looking window was a small, closet like space, filled with nine individual heads arising from the floor, one smiling, one laughing, one growling, each one with their own specific and personal expression. In order to approach this piece, some amount of bravery, rivaled by curiosity, played an effect in the looking process, but once the looking process began, it was a stimulating and dreamlike experience. Another work which fulfilled the minds capacity for imagination, titled “Call Me”, exemplified two nude, identical figures, facing each other, both standing on a skateboard moving back and forth in-between two wooden chairs. The two figures being pulled by a pulley system installed within two stereo speakers located at each end of the piece. Both figures facing each other, had their hands at each side of their face, gesturing a phone to each ear, while a phone conversation, followed by Van Morrison’s “Just the Two of Us”, played from the stereo speakers. The piece demonstrated a cycle of two that went back and forth in continuation, the two never actually getting anywhere outside of their boundary within the two speakers.

Dealing with relocating to a new area can be a struggle, which produces a learning, and growing experience for the self’s own understanding of the internal and external world around the self. The work and life experiences of Chido Johnson exemplifies the realizations and understandings involved in dealing with different localities, and the processes of understanding the internal and external world once changes have occurred. The changes in Johnson’s life have resulted in the creation of mind provoking and deeply contextual forms that fulfill the mind’s imagination and curiosity, while exerting questioning of the external world that seems so naturally to exist. Hopefully, the first recording of Domestified Angst , will be the first showcase in a continuation of events that incite the mind to think deeper about the world that is presented.

Art found at the Zeitgeist Gallery
By: Daniel Ballance

During my first visit to the Zeitgeist Gallery, located at 2661 Michigan Avenue, I was startled upon entry with commotion from a performance piece, being rehearsed behind a closed curtain. I didn’t know what to think of the absurd remarks in the back of the gallery, but continued with my hunt for stimulation, and found the work of Joan Painter Jones and M80, who built meticulous and obscure forms from found objects and materials. There were politically charged pieces, such as Painter Jones’ “Game”, represented through the placement of plastic army men surrounded by busts of superiority, all contained within a rectangular structure. M80’s piece “The Dead Presidents,” consisted of a functioning clock with a trivial president game positioned as the face of the clock, and the heart of the piece. “Tinkertime”, also by M80, was crowned with a yellow bird, on top of a tinkered clock, with sound horns coming out the side of the piece.

The combination of M80 and Joan Painter Jones, both provided a unique and interesting first visit to Zeitgeist Gallery, by strategically constructing, in some people’s eyes, “junk”, crafted into smartly built works of art which provoke thought, imagination, and questioning, of items, and their relationship to useless garbage.

Art at the 555 Gallery

By: Daniel Ballance

During the ArtDetroitNow extravaganza, including 100 gallery exhibits over a course of four days, a visit to the 555 Gallery could not be avoided. Upon entering the gallery I quickly noticed the art of Billy O’Bryan and his daughter Aqua, who sat welcoming eager viewers of the area. I was appalled as I looked at canvases that were tacked to the wall with loads of hummus, pizza slices, sprinkles, and other perishable substances that covered the unstrecthed canvas. The first piece that grabbed my attention was “Detroit City Flag”, a canvas covered in jalapeño hummus, and lightly colored with sprinkles that were allowed to grow and attach to the canvas support. Another piece of similar taste was “Piss Mirandi”; a similar canvas supporting found pizza slices, from Little Caesars that were attached with cheese and according to the artist himself piss from his own body. Billy O’Bryan, who graduated from California State, claimed his art comes from organic, untraditional materials that are kept at room temperature. These materials are allowed their own personal growth, as an experiment drawn from nature, which break away from the acceptable, typical mediums and play at a minor scale.

Billy O’Bryan’s daughter Aqua, did not disappoint, with her colorful series of digital photos called, “Electric Church”. These photographs included churches found in the Detroit area, which were altered to radiate a more mysterious, and questionable appearance, exerting a much larger presence of the church, much more fantastical than your everyday casual looking. There was also a grand figure sculpture, crafted by the artist Carl Goins, called “Betrayed Figure 1”, sculpted out of an oil-based clay. The figure was an older, mother type figure situated in a flat stool with a sunken expression on her face, as if she had something taken from her against her will. The craftsmanship of the piece cannot go unrecognized, for she exuberated much life and actuality, as if she was a viewer participating in the visual experience at the 555 Gallery.

Art Detroit Now - Reviews by Derek Ecker

Art Detroit Now: Alive and Kicking
MCB Artist Contributor - Derek Ecker

Being an up and coming artist in the Detroit area you constantly hear how little Motown has to offer the art community. Artist and art enthusiast alike always talk up major gallery epicenters like Los Angeles, New York, and Chicago; but never really give Detroit the respect it deserves. Our city has a certain gritty charm and the art of our area reflects that. The Art Detroit Now gallery crawl organized by Marc Schwartz proved that the gallery scene in Detroit is definitely alive and kicking. In the gallery crawl boasting over 100 galleries and 1000 artists, I had the honor of networking with artists, gallery owners, and collectors experiencing the spirit of Detroit art first hand. Here are just a few of the galleries that I grew to love at the Art Detroit Now gallery crawl.

Zeitgeist
2661 Michigan Ave
Detroit, MI 48216
(313) 965-9192

Tucked away in corktown lies this spectacular gallery space, which has been a part of Detroit’s gallery scene since 1997. The thing that separates this space from other galleries within the city is the permanent bar adjoined to the gallery, so you can get your drink on and get cultured at the same time. The space featured artists Joan Painter Jones and M80’s show titled “Spontaneous Combustion”. The show consisted of a works created through the juxtaposition of assembled found objects, paint, and sculpture. I found the pieces very intriguing in their execution of recycled materials within the artists’ work. The show reminded me in some ways of the Heidleberg Project in Detroit by artist Tyree Guyton. When speaking to the artist M80 about his process and art in general, he spoke about how any artist can create art on a blank surface; but there is something special about making pieces of art from materials that in many cases would be considered junk or garbage.

Izzy’s Raw Art Gallery
2572 Michigan Ave.
Detroit, MI 48216
(248) 207-7547

Another Corktown gem is this gallery, which incorporates a sweet mix of exposed artist workspace complimented with a hip urban layout that functions as their gallery space. The owners of this gallery Karl Schneider and Cathy Saman take pride in their galleries mission statement: “To promote an outlet for artists who are pushing the boundaries and to make these visions accessible to the public.” I feel that this space is a great spot for emerging and established artists to get their artwork out to the public, and for collectors to go in search of great works of art on a Motorcity budget. The gallery features openings every other month featuring new artwork by local, national, and international artists. Openings include live entertainment by local musicians, poets, and performers.

CAID
5141 Rosa Parks Blvd.
Detroit, MI 48208
(313) 899-2243

The Contemporary Art Institute of Detroit for The Art Detroit Now gallery crawl had openings of their four galleries throughout the metro area. Criticized for spreading themselves to thin throughout the Detroit gallery scene, the CAID is definitely an integral part of Detroit’s art scene. CAID gallery offered free shuttle services to all their galleries throughout the city. My personal favorite was the MassiV gallery located at the Russell Industrial Center. The space featured an intense installation that definitely left a lasting impression on me. One of the pieces featured two heavyset men sharing skateboard while the song “Just The Two of Us” played in the background. It was definitely a memorable installation, however I couldn’t find any information regarding whom the artist was that was responsible for the work. Regardless I encourage you to go out and see the new MazziV gallery at The Russell Industrial Center, because as I said before it’s definitely an experience. Not to mention that The Russell Industrial Center has become somewhat of the hot spot of art in Detroit at the moment.

MOCAD
4454 Woodward Ave.
Detroit, MI 48201
(313) 832-6622

The Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit is always an interesting experience. The museum is a nice addition to Detroit's art movement. The building is huge 22,000 square foot, a former auto dealership, which has been renovated to maintain its historic character. With massive raw open spaces, the building is ideal for exhibition. There is always great live music, a diverse crowd of eccentric artist, socialites, collectors and musicians. I have to be honest, I rarely find myself connecting with a lot of the art I typically see displayed at the space. However I cannot deny that I always end up having a great time when I visit MOCAD and always leave intrigued as to what is going to be next.

Duran Duran TONIGHT! - Masonic Temple - Thur May 15th

MOTORCITYBLOG's Amy Palomar and Paul Hitz will be at the show tonight snapping pictures and possibly getting a video interview with the boys from Duran Duran

1 lucky reader won tickets to the show 2 weeks ago and will be writing an extensive review of the show - thanks Mr. Winner!

As for you - get on over to the Masonic tonight and enjoy the boys from DD - the show starts at 7:30pm which gives you plenty of time to swing by the majestic for --X-- and The Detroit Cobras (MCB onsite for this one as well kids)

REVIEW OF DURAN DURAN SHOW
DETROIT MASONIC TEMPLE

Fresh from their Chicago gig, Duran Duran have yet again left a swath of glamour over the assembled throngs, a feat they seem to have mastered over thirty years of performance, imagery, music and taste.

As a thirty something year old fan, I am well schooled in the oeuvre of Duran, thus please allow a quick primer…
It was 1983 when we American kids were pounded over the head with the fedoras, the wrist bands, the smokey eye makeup. The songs folded in and out of our common experiences and ten years later they were doing it again, for Generation Y. Ten years on from that (after the comings and goings of members at random intervals) and the men that gave us “…cherry ice cream smile” were smiling BIG on a world tour that reunited the original members and launched a pop campaign nothing short of miraculous… for the fans that is. Sales were pleasing enough but it was the core fans who dropped jaws when the Simon/Nick/John/Andy/Roger train left the station.

Here we are in 2008 and on the heels of the unfolding drama they’re calling “Red Carpet Massacre”, the Epic release from late 2007 that has roped in the quickly widening age range of fans but perhaps not so much the charts.
Slumping sales of said product made no difference on Thursday evening though -
never before have so many suburban parents looked so fierce.

Typing with the hangover of a Night in the D (double meaning intended) , my memory unfolds for you now… we tied a few on with Vanessa and Holly (of groupie stardom) and sidled into the Masonic Temple Theater. This venue is a cavernous and historic building replete with old Detroit glitz where a not-quite-so-full house rose to it’s feet at 8:48pm and did not sit down ‘till 11:00.
A well rehearsed line up marred only briefly by a few technical hiccups allowed for an evening of “singing-at-the-top-of-your-lungs” joy.
Heaven indeed for those willing to submit.

Merchandise booth? How about Merchandise Room. Brimming… expensive and extensive (hoodies?) - it was the usual fare: tour book, ball cap, baby-tee. All items featuring the RCM “Red Carpet Massacre” feel - blood red meets Warhol silver foil and Paul Maxwell’s Crewe Issue Ltd. did a fantastic job creating small pieces of wearable art that surely garnered a few overdrafts in our collective accounts… the price we pay to capture another moment in the Duran Tour Dynasty.

The show was (as Duranies have come to expect) a mash of hits peppered with the new songs and a quirky “electro set” poised neatly in the middle and featuring five basic elements: the tear jerker oldie, the rager, the throw down, the cover version and the “what the heck was THAT?” (“Skin Trade” in overdrive). It was tight, sharp and well executed.
With a back catalogue that extends beyond our years in elementary school, they had plenty to pick from.

All of the elements were in place (purists might miss guitarist Andy Taylor but the capable Dom Brown is the perfect replacement) and the overall sound was bigger and grittier than ever.
Nate “Danja” Hills has added a new ingredient to the mix, one that smears the band’s sound in street-techno-candy-gloss and grinds it through the rock-sieve.
The feel of their new c.d. translated nicely into live performance and for once in many moons I saw fans actually dancing with abandon to the NEW songs.
This is odd as it’s normally a polite sit-down for the new material and back to booty shake for something like “Reflex” or “Notorious” but not so on this night - the new stuff felt immediately current and in step with the modern pop definition.

Their set (the stage itself) had a cityscape backdrop and mini “red carpet”, cute but mainly sparse. The light show incorporated massive rectangles of fluttering light that gave emphasis to certain choruses or phrasing, designer Vince Foster knows what he’s doing. I can’t say I loved the twinkling Christmas lights strung from the rafters but what do I know?
There was none of the video projection techniques Duranies have come to adore but perhaps the Temple was ill-suited… it made no difference in the long run, the music was all we needed.
An interesting opening sequence involved searchlights combing the crowd, making US feel famous for minutes at a time and driving the excitement to fever-pitch.

The band? Let’s run the numbers…
The guys themselves seemed genuinely pleased to be back in Detroit and the between song banter was enough to convince us of being a favorite stop for them.
Simon LeBon (lead singer), approaching 50 at breakneck speed, still cannot dance but literally sounded better than he has in a decade. Honestly, I couldn’t catch even one sour note - which is something Duranies get a kick out of catching.

The glorious Anna Ross served as backup vocalist and lent a clean and exacting twin sound to Simon’s masterful tone. Saxophonist Simon Willescroft was perfect on standby for the ever present solo/riff that bubbles to the surface in so many Duran songs.
John Taylor of course remains the quintessential bassist and fan favorite by casually engaging the audience with wry smiles and witty commentary and - oh my - an Obama tee for the encore? Political.
Roger Taylor (drummer) stays hidden behind his Tama/Zildjian fortress but packs a sonic punch and solo’s himself into a storm during the “meet-the-band” segment of a now legendary “Girls On Film”.
Nick Rhodes (keyboardist) is nothing short of Pop Celebrity at full tilt. His famed riffs and not-too-hard-to-miss improvs laid an aural glitter over the set that gave their vibration a glam-sheen (thank you Korg) and a powerful sound. I’ll stop short of discussing the eerie glow of the Mac Apple laptop peering out from his perch.

It was a long show, a set list that held the audience with anxious “what will they play next?”-ness. The people around us (only a smattering of “under 18”) swayed and shimmied and sang the songs that defined their formative years and “Save A Prayer” delivered the expected churchiness of “link arms and hold up yer’ cell” we’ve all seen in the docs and vids that seem to be an endless stream of footage from years recent and long gone. I can only hope documentary video artist Gavin Elder caught chunks of this particular show. Detroit loves to dress up, loves a good night out and apparently knows ALL the words to “Rio”. The encore had us nearing exhaustion and looking around at the sweaty faces and clapping hands and giant smiles it became evident that Detroit loves something else as well.
Detroit loves Duran Duran.

Um, but don’t say that to the X fans we ran into at the Majestic later on
- over and out, Dave LaFave

Readings from Lemon Tree Author Sandy Tolan - AANM - Sat May 17th

LEMON TREE AUTHOR LECTURES AT AANM THIS SATURDAY

Journalist, teacher and public radio producer Sandy Tolan will appear at the Arab American National Museum at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, May 17th 2008 to give a lecture and read from his book The Lemon Tree: An Arab, A Jew and the Heart of the Middle East (Bloomsbury, 2006).

The Lemon Tree chronicles the lives of two families – one Israeli, one Palestinian – who both occupied the same stone house in Ramle, while telling the larger story of the Palestinian Nakba (catastrophe) and the 1948 creation of the state of Israel.

During the lecture, Tolan will explore the 60th anniversary of that fateful event, share some of its untold history and discuss its contemporary impact. Following the lecture, Tolan will take questions from the audience and sign copies of his book, available for sale in the Museum Store. Attendees are welcome to bring their personal copies of Tolan’s book to the event.

The lecture in the AANM Auditorium is free and open to the public; RSVP to Fay Saad at 313.624.0200 or fsaad@accesscommunity.org.

Sandy Tolan is a teacher and radio documentary producer. He is the author of two books: Me and Hank: A Boy and His Hero, Twenty-Five Years Later (Free Press, 2000), about the intersection between race, sports, and American heroes; and The Lemon Tree: An Arab, A Jew, and the Heart of the Middle East. The Washington Post called the latter book “extraordinary” and placed it among its top nonfiction titles for 2006; the Christian Science Monitor wrote, “no novel could be more compelling” and proclaimed, “It will be one of the best nonfiction books you will read this year.”

Tolan has reported from more than 30 countries, especially in the Middle East, Latin America, the Balkans, and Eastern Europe. As co-founder of Homelands Productions, he has produced hundreds of documentaries and features for public radio. He has written for more than 40 newspapers and magazines.

From 2000-2007 Tolan taught international reporting and radio at the Graduate School of Journalism at the University of California-Berkeley. In 2007, his students won the George Polk Award for their public radio series on the early signs of climate change around the world – the first time students have been honored in the 58-year history of the awards. He is currently a visiting professor at the Annenberg School of Communication, University of Southern California.

The Arab American National Museum documents, preserves, celebrates, and educates the public on the history, life, culture, and contributions of Arab Americans. We serve as a resource to enhance knowledge and understanding about Arab Americans and their presence in this country. The Arab American National Museum is a project of ACCESS, a Dearborn, Michigan-based nonprofit human services and cultural organization. Art Detroit Now - Cranbrook Graduate Awards - Art Space II

2008 Cranbrook M.F.A. Graduate Awards Presentation and Exhibition:
Thank you Greg Wittkop, Cranbrook Art Museum Director and the Academy for allowing MOTORCITYBLOG to attend the award show and photograph the awards and exhibition.

The Cranbrook Academy of Art has long been revered as progenitor of globally recognized artists, designers, and architects. Ten artists-in-residence mentor 15 students each in a M.F.A program that is uniquely self-directed. Monumental discipline, intellectual effort, and technical skill is required to complete the 2-year program. US News & World Report ranked it as the 4th best M.F.A. program out of 220 in the US. So, if you want to get your finger on the pulse of creme de la creme contemporary art, definitely check out the exhibition at the museum.
It's located at: 39221 Woodward Avenue, Bloomfield Hills, Michigan.

--Photography and commentary by Sue Antosh

Art Space II, Birmingham:
Gallery manager, Colleen Houlihan was kind enough to share that while the gallery has been in business for 24 years, it is still an uphill battle to promote the incredible offerings of art and artists in Detroit. She attributes this to our huge geographic expanse and modern diversions like computers and video games.

"Art Detroit Now is such a great way for people to experience real art and get outside the home and enjoy something truly interactive." The gallery supports and promotes Cass Corridor and local artists, does a lot of secondary market business (reselling fine art--Chagall, Picasso, Miro, et. al.), as well as consulting with corporations. The gallery is currently highlighting the work of one of the first American Modernists, Edgar Louis Yaeger, who was born in Detroit. Yaeger's style is, "a combination of Cubist structuring and American Scene representation with pleasing color harmonies and stylized patterns well suited for public murals." The oil on canvas painting, "Dove," is a great example of this (see the detail photo in the slide show). The muted, warm, earthy palette and 2D forms truly communicate a sense of peace on earth when you are viewing it in person.

1st of all we use blogger for our anti-blog website here at MCB and about every 3-4 months google comes out with an update that tries to force you into the "upgrade" of the new version of blogger - which always jacks up our archive (we lost a whole year of posts the last time we did it)

Prohibition Party - Ye Olde Tap Room - Sat May 10th 7pm

Get out your bucket of Buffalo Nickles for 5cent BEER!

Head on over to Ye Olde Tap Room and celebrate your freedom to raise a glass here in Michigan!

Prohibition Party

Saturday May 10th 2008 7pm

Ye Olde Tap Room

14915 Charlevoix - Detroit MI

On May 1, 1918, Michigan passed a law calling for full prohibition, that is, the Michigan legislature voted to turn hundreds of thousands of Michigan residents into criminals. However, on February 18, 1919, the Michigan Supreme Court held that law to be unenforcible.
The period of freedom did not last long. Five weeks later, on March 27, 1919, another law making criminals out of ordinary citizens who like to drink was passed. Before it could be overturned, the U.S. Government passed nationwide prohibition, and legalized all alcohol-prohibiting state laws.

This state of affairs lasted until 1933, when the U.S. Government, at long last recognizing the connection between high crime rates and prohibition, got out of the alcohol prohibition business and turned the matter over to the states. A state convention was held in 1933, with one delegate from each state house district. They voted 99 to 1 to repeal prohibition.

During prohibition in Michigan (1919-1933) 54,007 people were prosecuted in Michigan state courts for alcohol "crimes," with 36,327 convicted.
One of those was Fred M. Palm, who got life imprisonment for 14 ounces of gin.

.
Another was Etta Mae Miller, a 48 year old woman with 10 children who got life imprisonment for 2 pints of moonshine whiskey.

In the year following the reinstatement of the right to drink, homicides in Michigan dropped 70%.

Bag is Hot - JOSEPH ARTHUR

We get a lot of emails about various new records and other stuff all the time but we rarely post about them because our focus is events here in detroit - not the news - not whats cool or new

but here is one we thought to pass on since it is a living record album - is this the future of recording and releasing albums? check it out at http://josepharthur.tumblr.com/

‘Bag Is Hot’ is Joseph Arthur's new way of releasing his music and art.
It is liquid and ongoing – a form onto itself. Brand new music is composed and recorded strictly for this album – really beautiful, unearthly, fully realized music – that interacts with images and artwork to form a living, breathing record. ‘Bag is Hot’ is free, open-ended, has no rules and is being modernized by Joseph at a rapid pace.

“’Bag is hot’…like fresh popcorn for all the kids to grab,” says Joseph. “Digital hands eating the digital popcorn. This project is fun and doesn’t have to be precious, but it’s hard not to take it seriously and really work on it. It’s not, ‘Bag is getting a little lukewarm - Bag is hot! It’s gonna be slang soon!”

Pictures from The Kills @ Magic Stick Detroit May 2008

MOTORCITYBLOG was on the Press List for the show and had 2 photographers and a reviewer onsite to do our thing...these shots are from Paul Hitz with more on the way from Amy Palomar and Jeff Nolan with a review of the show soon.

We were at the MS today and spoke with The Kills for a bit about the show last night but they didnt want to be interviewed on video - "a bit early for that" at 3pm

The Kills@ The Magic Stick

May 7th 2008

MCB Contributor Jeff Nolan

www.therealjeffnolan.com

The Kills were very loud. They were pretty much deafening. For two small and quiet looking people they are pretty ominous and menacing onstage. After seeing they industrial-bluesy-eurotrash set it wouldn`t be a far stretch to see the Kills as the fascist dictators of somebackwards little country in Eastern Europe. Maybe not though. The stage was minimally decorated with giant white sheets that hungall around back and sides of the stage. On the sheets were projected alternating video clips of old bands (I think I saw Sid & Nancy, theRamones, and Talking Heads...) as well as an epileptic light show to keep the kids on the floor twitching.

There was a large turnout of enthusiastic, well-dressed hipsters aswell as more than a few fine-looking ladies. The dance floor waspacked near to capacity with people of all types. At one point I was given a beer by a girl because it was as she described it ˘too foamy˘so thanks to you. Walking through the crowd now with my free beer andpad of paper I made several observations, few of which I can recall now to include because around this time I lost my pen. For an encore they chose a Captain Beefheart track from Safe As Milk that was much appreciated by yours truly. Coincidentally the MotorCityBlog Crew ran into the Kills the next afternoon while we waited to interview the Black Kids and Cut Copy. Unfortunately they seemed a little too partied out for much conversation. The Kills were definitely a top notch act.

ADULT.
Friday May 8th 2008
