"catl is a Toronto-based, super high energy, rhythm and blues
trio. Three
records into their rock and roll experiment, catl are heading south to
where their inspirations were initially conceived. After playing Chicago and the Bayport Deep Blues
Festival in Minnesota they’re moving on to extending the
dance-party to the north-east. Having recorded the last two records with
Detroit’s Jim Diamond (White Stripes, The
Dirtbombs) at Ghetto Recorders Studio and using Detroit’s own
Harmonica Shah and Danny Kroha (The Gories,
Demolition Dollrods) as guests on their latest sides, they are
already looking forward to playing their music for the
good
people of the U.S. proper. Opening for contemporaries such as The Jon Spencer
Blues Explosion, Heavy Trash, and
Andre Williams, catl have developed a devout following north of
the border and continue to work their way into the
minds and hips of all that share the experience."
Detroit Area Dork: How was the experience recording with catl?
Jim Diamond: I love working with those guys. We just set up in the studio and do 90% of the recording all live, vocals and all, and do takes until we get it all right. That's just not done in most recordings these days. Most people want to overdub over, and over, and make sure it's perfect and antiseptic, but that's not the point of music and these guys (and gal) understand. I like it! And we have fun together, which is very important.
DD: What influence do you hear in their music?
JD: Well, of course, the nasty southern rural blues; not the modern chicago style. Also, the organ brings a whole different kind of 60's thing in it's own way; the "garage/beat" sound, as it were. And the female vocals. It's a nice and unique combination. And then add full on drums...
DD: How many songs feature Harmonica Shaw? What did Danny Kroha contribute?
JD: Danny played harp on one, and Shaw played harp on two I think.
