Seminal post-punk project Public Image Limited make a stop in Detroit on Friday, October 19, 8pm at The Royal Oak Music Theatre as part of their Fall U.S. Tour.
The iconoclastic band formed by ex-Sex Pistol John Lydon, return with their first album of new music in 20 years, "THIS IS PiL." The album was released in May via their own PiL Official label, and the new single, "Reggie Song/Out of the Woods," was just released on Oct. 1 of this year.
The current PiL line-up consists of John Lydon (vocals), Lu Edmonds (guitar), Scott Firth (bass) and Bruce Smith (drums).
The first incarnation of PiL infiltrated the music scene in 1978 shortly after the Sex Pistols demise. Their moody post-punk sound and dark themes led by the snarling vocals of John Lydon, the dub-style bass of Jah Wobble and the angular guitars of Keith Levine and drummer Jim Walker ushered in a period of darkwave music that was pre-Goth.
Lydon's infamous outspokenness continued to piss off the media who attempted to publicize the band - or as he called it - a company. Two memorable television appearances on The Tom Snyder Show and the live-but-lip-synched performances of "Poptones" and "Careering" on the popular teen dance show American Bandstand were legendary and one should seek them out on YouTube.
