Chicago-based electro duo Moneypenny are putting the finishing touches on a great year by offering up a FREE holiday single AND special holiday mixtape to the masses. The 2-sided single features Moneypenny's reworking of the classic "Peanuts" Christmas song "Christmas Time Is Here" as the A-Side and a cover of the much-loved Joy Division song "Love Will Tear Us Apart" as the B-Side, while the mixtape comes as the final installment of Moneypenny's Spandexxx monthly mixtape series of 2009, complete with yule tide
cheer to keep you warm this holiday season. 





2009 was quite a year for Moneypenny. The group, which was primarily known as a DJ duo at the beginning of the year, unveiled their "Live" act and original songs at Perry's stage @ Lollapalooza to great critical acclaim and parlayed that good fortune into high profile gigs with Neon Indian, Flosstradamus, Basement Jaxx and Miike Snow in Chicago, as well as other high profile plays such as the Dim Mak party in LA and the legendary Popscene party in San Francisco.

Moneypenny saw the release of their first single, "Say No" (which came packaged with a killer remix from Chicago contemporariesHey Champ), which prompted features in Time Out, CS, and URB and led tastemaking indie blog Pretty Much Amazing to call the track "catchy and interesting, and guaranteed to make you want to bounce." Last but not least, the girls of Moneypenny also found some success in the highly competitive world of music licensing, with their yet-to-be-released song "Lipstick Revolution" finding airplay on ABC's "Make It Or Break It."

Moneypenny will play one final hometown show in 2009 this Saturday, headlining a holiday celebration featuring Chicago's next crop of dance/electro talent, before going into studio hibernation to finish up recording on their debut EP, which is set for release in the spring of 2010. Before the EP's release, Moneypenny will open for La Roux in Chicago, headline the Metro and play a series of shows in New York City and Austin for SXSW.

And you might also recognize a certain Roberto Carlos Lange. He lives in Brooklyn and has great hair - ok, ok we give in: it's the frontman of Helado Negro. And his Music for Memory is a swirling disc of loops and drones perfect for those memory related quests for keys, or mid-afternoon epiphanies. Music for Memory is like one giant crossfade going from one idea to the next in long rhythmic patterns. The Return of MONEYPENNY

MCB's longtime contributor MoneyPenny was recently involved in a rock em sock em crash em up derby car accident that has put her on the back burner so to speak but she is returning in full flavor and should be 200% in no time flat...

HANG UP THE FUCKING PHONE AND PAY ATTENTION!
My neck is slowly healing, but I am dying to be myself again before I have an identity crisis. I'm feeling rather old. I caught myself pseudo-dancing to the spazz jazz that they play on the Weather Channel during "your local on the 8's" recently.
It is time to check myself, as I am currently wrecking myself.

It was great to get out last Friday at the Showtime 20th party. I took a few pictures of MCB folks, but in my pill induced haze I really only took a few shots. Great people at that place though, I see Brett Michaels is the new fashion guru of the masses.

I saw more guyliner w/ cowboy hats than I ever did in the 80's.

It was a good crowd and good times.

As if losing Farrah and Ed wasn't enough, MJ went and stole their thunder like a MF. Wings gave up the cup, Kate plus 9 is over, Iran can't use Twitter, and Korea maybe wants to blow us off the map. Not to make light of any of these subjects, but I think we all need some cheering up.

PHOTOS: MEW at New Way Bar Ferndale by Moneypenny



Hello MCB readers - Moneypenny here,
back from slackerland!

Well...not really,
but I did manage to stumble across something
to write home about this weekend so dig in...

I was pleasantly surprised when my good friend Ann (who now lives in Nashville) said she was going to drive all the way up here to see her friends band play their annual reunion show.
According to her, MEW was worth the trip and she promised I would love it.
Ann has never let me down on a good time, so I grabbed my gear
and my sexy assistant Mark
and headed to the New Way Bar in Ferndale.

Once there I was quickly introduced to
both drummers
in MEW.
Marek, who sings lead and plays hand drums, and Cliff, who sings backup and plays the drum set are founding members of the band and have known each other since 1981. Both were members of the influential Detroit industrial band Shock Therapy in the late 80's and early 90's.
Marek explained that after a long haul with Shock Therapy they were sick of playing "the depressing shit" and in 1995 they turned to drums to tap into their neglected positivity.
It started out as only drums, but other musicians
couldn't help but want to be a part of the infectious groove
and soon MEW, meaning "My Entire World"
formed a whole band creating a calypso sound.

The band broke up in 2002, but has an annual reunion that attracts a loyal crowd of long-time fans and enthusiastic newcomers who are curious to hear what the heck these guys sound like.

you will be...well, shocked, as there is nothing somber or electronic about this group

With a highly energetic Marek in front wearing pink leopard-skin pants, MEW has an impressive collection of instruments and musicians and the prominent drums gives their music a tropical vibe that had the girls all swaying like hula dancers. They made everyone move, even Jimmy Doom was shaking his butt out there. I don't think I sat down again till I got in the car to go home.

The New Way Bar is kickass. Lisa is the sweetest (and loveliest) bartender ever. She asked who I was shooting for and when I said MOTORCITYBLOG,
she goes "oh, yeah...that cutie Kirk, right?" ;)
The whole staff seemed to have a great time with the patrons. With the combination of friendly atmosphere, dizzying dance floor experience and my good friend beer, I left with my sides aching from laughter and some seriously tired feet.

Thanks to Ann, the New Way Bar and MEW for good times.
I look forward to next years reunion!

MCB: The Gong Show ran for only 8 episodes...Can you tell us what happened to derail its revival?

ATTELL: Actually we did 6 episodes but it felt like 8...I have not heard anything from Comedy Central but I dont think its coming back...I guess we will have to settle for the show "America's Got Talent"

MCB: What was one of the most memorable moments from your experiences doing Insomniac, running around town for drinks and debauchery?
ATTELL: There were alot of cool times on that show, its all a blur thanks to my friend yaeger...But I guess the Penis Parade in Japan was a real trip...Seeing a whole town walk around with a giant Penis was pretty wild...And erotic.

MCB: You've traveled extensively throughout the country. What was THEE best place to get drunk?
ATTELL: I get this question alot..I always say..Vegas is the best drinking town, cause they have no last call, but any place where you dont have to drink and drive will do..

MCB: Can you recite your favorite line (or one that you can't seem to get out of your head) from the voice overs you did for the video game Outlaw Golf 2?
ATTELL: WOW, GOOD ONE !!! favorite line I guess... "Im the master chief" wait thats HALO...Shit!!! Next question..

MCB: Tell us about your favorite heckler moment?
ATTELL: FAVORITE HECKLER MOMENT.....Is there such a thing. You call it heckling I call it tough love...either way, its all good till they start wiping bottles at yah...

MCB: What is your best memory from working the USO circuit?
ATTELL: Speaking of the USO..I am doing a benefit with RON WHITE in Washington DC...The sunday after DETROIT..Tell your friends...

MCB: Who is your current favorite porn star and why?
ATTELL: MY FAVORITE PORN STAR....thats another great question...thats like asking a fat man what his favorite cookie is...They're all good.

MCB: What's next for you?

Moneypenny, brimming with art news and local brews...

Went to the Crofoot on 9/11 for Emerge and See, an event that covered all types of Detroit-based art including several artists displaying and selling their work, live tagging, DJs, bands and live performances (even a puppet show), clothes, jewelry, etc. The wide range of styles collected together under one roof made for an eclectic ambiance. While browsing through the expansive Crofoot I got a different feel from each of the vendor tables piled high with goodies ranging from "grandmas cluttered house full of nick-knacks" to "sleek, ultra-mod bachelor pad". Eclectic Underground had the coolest and most affordable t-shirts for sale. My assistant got a great one with the Ren Cen on it for ten bucks. We stuck around for a few beers, watched the tagging and caught some of the music. Just before leaving we checked out the puppet show. Those guys were dead serious.


It was a good night for artsy-talk and people watching.
Lots of spiky hair, skinny jeans and people with big ambitions.
We absorbed all the fancy we could handle and
then took off to Mt Chalet for bangers and mash.

Saturday was the 32nd Dally in the Alley. My assistant took all the pictures at this one, leaving me free to drink double-fisted all day. Just as we got there we ran into Danny and Tony Muggs, who were just there to enjoy the day. We headed over to the Theatre Bizarre booth only to find out that they sold all 500 tickets for the day within the first two hours, and some of the more disappointed folks stood outside the creepy, faded circus facade and pouted about it all day. Took in Mick Basset who was joined by his Marthas for a few songs, including a super-cute cover of "Picture book". Mick did plenty of solo stuff, and this is the second time I've witnessed that kid get up there and soothe the savage beast all by himself.
That ginger-fro must have magic powers. Spent some time with the friendly folks at the Michigan Norml tent, shopped around through the colorful array of ally vendors, enjoyed spicy street cuisine. The Dally touts itself as the cleanest festival in Detroit, and from my experience I would have to agree. One recycling bin for every trash can and no garbage lying around anywhere. And they have great local beer for sale, too. So us beer snobs don't have to resort to drinking the American piss-water beer that is ubiquitous at most festivals.
The weather for this Dally was perfect and we enjoyed
a steady stream of passing friends all day long.
Most of our time was spent drinking with MCB crew
by the Ally Stage, all finished off with some fantastic eats from the Cass Cafe.

MONEYPENNY reports on tanker explosion off I75 - 9Mile Hazel Park

MCB's longtime contributor MoneyPenny was on the scene of the tanker crash tonight on I-75 and 9Mile in Hazel Park calling from the road earlier tonight and delivering these photos

This week in Moneypenny:

A tanker exploded on I-75 today and melted the bridge above till it collapsed onto the flaming freeway. Giant plumes of toxic smoke are leading streams of curious public to the scene despite adamant media warnings to stay away. I'm not gonna lie, it looks pretty bad. Amazingly (and thankfully), so far reports say that no one was seriously hurt.

One "eye-witness" caller on a local radio report stated that a box full of kittens was left on the road and the driver of the tanker in question was "out chasing pussy" when the disaster occurred. I'm not kidding.

I took pictures from the road and my Assistant took some from the pedestrian bridge near the scene. All photos are from very far away, but it is clear from what we can see here that we're all gonna be using 8 Mile for an indefinite amount of time.

Good luck getting to work on Friday Jr. !

PHOTOS: Dead Confederate ~ The Whigs @ Magic Stick Detroit by MoneyPenny


MCB's MoneyPenny was asked to come out to the whigs / dead confederate show last night and came out with these shots just for you!

Makes me wanna go to the late-night double-feature picture show. ;)

Last nights show was ok. Place was pretty empty and the small crowd consisted almost entirely of little kiddies. The only one working with the band that I could even find was the t-shirt sales guy and he was useless to me. I walked all around that place and the only people working that I could see were the ones serving drinks. It even took the door guy three tries to find my name on the list, they were kinda giving me shit (WTF is up with that? Do little people get off on this?). I had my finger on your number in my phone and I was ready to press "send" JUST as they found my name. Yeah, there it is you freakin' moron - right in front of you...

That must have been a real tough one...considering it was right at the top of the list written in capital letters.

Anyway...Everyone else barely looked old enough to get into the bar, including the singers for both opening bands. So, I made my time there all about getting good shots of the show.

Both of the kiddie bands did a good job and seemed to get the other kids moving a bit, even though it was clearly a Whigs crowd. As for me, I just HATE EMO. With a scathing passion (I think I'm just about 10 years too old to get on that bandwagon, so to speak).

So the whiny, wailing, skinny-boy thing made it really easy to keep my focus on shooting. I could tell they were kids with talent though. Dead Confederate had a creepy/cool lighting setup and I think I got some really cool shots with lots of smokey light-beam effects.

The singer looks just like Eddie Furlong in Terminator. The little girls loved it.

I made Dead Confederate the focus of my shoot, but I have plenty of Whigs and the other band too...Terrence's Arc? Traces Arc? Something. I dunno.

So I should probably get my slacker-ass back to the job. Which is really killing me today.

As a lover of Michigan, I always seek to discover the best that the Mitten has to offer.

This time, I discovered WINE!

And the discovery was really fun.



On a recent Saturday we took a drive to Dundee, MI, to the St. Julian store. My folks swear by their red wine vinegar for salads and buy it by the case. They gave us a bottle and I immediately fell in love with the stuff. It makes salad dressing and marinades wonderfully delicious and easy. When I ran out, I went online and saw that St. Julian's has the largest and oldest winery in Michigan and that they have several different kinds of wine.

This was all it took for me to grab

my assistant and get in the car for an MCB roadtrip.

The actual winery is in Paw Paw and looks like a lovely place to visit with tours and events, but a bit much of a drive. So we went to the store in Dundee right across the street from Cabela's. It's a large wine store, with a nice tasting bar and plenty of stuff to pick from. They offered us case price, so we grabbed 6 bottles of their seasoned vinegar and took a trip around the floor to examine each wine and scratch our heads.

We admittedly don't know anything about wine.
Just that we like it a lot.
The nice girl at the bar noticed our struggle and let us taste several of their delightful products. We picked out our favorite 6, which took all of a few minutes, then merrily wandered over to Cabela's with our tiny buzz.
Nothing like roaming a colossal hunting goods store
when you're a bit tipsy.
Those creepy, omnipresent stuffed animals are trying to look all stoic,
but I'm convinced they're watching and listening as people shop.

When we got home, we didn't really remember most of what we had picked out. So in order to write to you fine folks about each wine, we had no choice but to spend the week drinking it. It was a tough call to action, but for the sake of journalism we braved through it.


St. Julian Simply Red: $8.49
A pleasant every-day red that is easy to drink. All of the Michigan reds seem a little sweeter, less dry than we're used to but I found it refreshing. This was perfect with snacks on a hot day.

St. Julian Michigan Cherry Wine: $7.99
I LOVED this. Slightly spicy and very cherry, my assistant was not a fan. But I'm a girl, and thought this was fantastic. The finishing taste is just like real cherry pie. I wanted to drink this in my backyard, so I just enjoyed it cold in a tumbler. It's that kind of unpretentious wine that still makes you feel like you're drinking something fancy.
If you like cherry, this is your Tenderoni.


St. Julian Red Wine Vinegar Salad Dressing: $6.99
This is THE stuff.
This is what we drove all the way out there for.
This makes the perfect base for marinade or salad dressing
and I love it so much I think I could drink it.
It makes everything a lovely color, too.

Miss Moneypenny's Ruby Salad Dressing:
Equal parts good olive oil and St. Julian salad dressing vinegar
with sea salt and cracked pepper to taste, and just a little bit of honey
Shake the hell out of it.
Voila!

St. Julian Red Heron and Blue Heron: $7.19
These say semi-sweet on the bottle, which means sweet. I like the Red Heron, it is spicy and very grapey. This is good cold and could be good with dessert. It reminds me of sangria in a way. Which is a good thing.

Braganini Reserve Cabernet Franc: $19.99
This one was by far our favorite. Unfortunately it is the most expensive wine on my list, but we both really loved it when we tasted it at the store and just had to have it.

Drier than the other wines but still light.

We're actually saving this bottle for a good meal.

It deserves that much.

St. Julian Red: $8.49
Reminiscent of the Simply Red, this is a good table wine. My assistant drank this while I drank the Red Heron because he doesn't like much sweet, and he drank the whole bottle which means that this one must have been dry enough for his palate.

In the line of duty we've had a few wine-buzz adventures. My favorite was when we took a little walk down to the nearby train tracks to pick wild raspberries and busted a neighbor doing the same. She ran home and got us a fresh, deep purple jar of her homemade black raspberry jam; all made from wild Michigan raspberries. It is my favorite product of Michigan so far, and it made a lovely snack on toast with more of my wine.

Did I mention that this project was fun?

We will have to take on a few more of our editor's proposals
which is a leap of faith considering some of the last few thrown at us

To top it all off, we discovered recently that Faygo has four flavors still made with real sugar and bottled in glass. Sadly, none of the flavors are Rock n Rye, but we made due with Red Pop. After a long day of wine drinking and breezy Michigan summer, I was like a slap-happy, drunken little kid with my glass bottle of pop.

So from all of this I have learned that wine is fun and not snobby, that Michigan is bountiful, and only the BEST stuff comes in glass bottles and jars.

See? Drinking makes you smart.

Now it's time to dry out and pack. One assignment we never turn down is covering the EODM for MCB. We're off to Canada to see Eagles Of Death Metal in London and Kitchener! You didn't think I was gonna get all soft and boring, just drinking in my back yard all day, didja? Well, maybe someday. But not this week. For 10.5 months of the year there is little else to do in Chicago besides drink heavily. The Prairie Cartel started as an excuse for Scott Lucas (Local H), Blake Smith and Mike Willison (both ex-Caviar) to do this in Mike's basement while playing their favorite records. Albums on DFA, Matador, Wax Trax, Modular and Creation were all in heavy rotation during those dark months except when the whisky came out and it went all Ummagumma on them.
The obligatory, possibly illegal, and definitely messy DJ gigs followed. Warehouses and lofts trembled before their can't-mix, won't-even-try-to-mix majesty. They developed a reputation for sets that were somehow gloriously disheveled but still extremely satisfying. After a particularly delirious night behind, on top of, and in front of the decks in London where some teeth got chipped, a little blood got spilled, and the local authorities threatened to pull their passports, they decided the timing was perfect to pick their instruments back up and go home to cut a record

Australia's The Grates are set to release their anticipated sophomore album Teeth Lost, Hearts Won on September 15"' via Thirty Tigers/Dew Process. The 13-song album was produced by Peter Katis (Interpol, The National) at Tarquin Studios in Connecticut and features guest appearances by Kori Gardner of Mates of State (vocals on "Milk Eyes") and Tim Fite (vocals on "Not Today"). On this album, the follow up to their 2006 Interscope Records debut, Gravity Won't Get You High, The Grates have brought a depth and density to the songwriting - the lyrics are raw and poignant and the sonics more biting and aggressive.

"If Teeth Lost, Hearts Won was a beast, I imagine it'd be like something from Where The Wild Things Are," lead singer and front woman Patience says. "They're big and scary, but they've also got this sensitivity, and pick up the little kid and protect him." Drummer Alana adds, "Or maybe like the griffin In Alice In Wonderland. He's like a lion and eagle together, but a really gentle creature."

In Australia, The Grates have played numerous sold out headline tours, played major festivals such as Big Day Out, Homebake, Falls Festival, Southbound and stole the show at Splendour In The Grass. Gravity Won't Get You High has gone Gold in Australia while Teeth Lost, Hearts Won is well on its way to Gold status as well.

The American record release follows a highly successful trip to the U.S. for the SXSW Music Festival in March. While in Austin, the band played five buzzed about shows in four days and gained a massive amount of recognition for their highly energetic performances. USA Today named the band one of ten favorite performances of the festival, stating "Lead singer Patience Hodgson blew me away with her enthusiasm ... a hardcore fan suddenly appeared, dressed in a leotard, and joined her for a spontaneous dance ... these are the SXSW moments you dream of." The Los Angeles Times added, "The Grates are a group that are impossible not to smile with… (they) will no doubt soon be laughing their way to the bank, for if the world embraced the
Ting Tings last year, Patience & Co. are sure to be everyone's new darlings any day now." The Austin Chronicle said of the album, "Full marks go to Aussie trio The Grates for not over thinking things and executing them almost flawlessly on new LP Teeth Lost, Hearts Won. When you rock with that kind of abandon, wearing a batgirl costume onstage works." The highly successful trip was capped off with multiple sold out shows in New York and Los Angeles.

The band has relocated to Brooklyn, NY in order to make American touring easier and has since played a residency at Piano's on the Lower East Side in July. They also made an appearance at the Hillside Festival in Guelph, ON July 24-26th and will play the 2009 Monolith Music Festival, held at Red Rocks on September 13th (with the Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs, Phoenix, Girl Talk, M Ward, Of Montreal and many more). After their wildly successful performance at Lollapalooza 2009, Chicago-based DJ/electro duo Moneypenny will take their music to the masses with the release of a free 2-song digital single and string of upcoming high profile buzz gigs in Chicago, LA and San Francisco. October 27th will see the DVD releases of All The Way From Michigan Not Mars and You Weren't There: A History of Chicago Punk 1977-84 from Brooklyn, NY's Factory 25. Both titles will also be released in a limited edition bundle format that includes the DVD, an LP featuring music from the films and other collectors items.All The Way From Michigan Not Mars is a meditative exploration of Rosie Thomas’ work that uses intimate live performances with fellow songwriters Sufjan Stevens and Denison Witmer as a pathway. The film is a lyrical examination of Thomas’ quest for an expression of truth and her unique brand of performance, combining songs of plaintive melancholy with sharp-witted banter and Sheila, her bizarre stand-up comedian alter ego. The DVD features deleted scenes and performances with Rosie Tomas, Damien Jurado and Sufjan Stevens and the limited vinyl LP is the never-before released Apartment Sessions with Sufjan Stevens and Denison Witmer that evolved into Thomas' 2007 album, These Friends of Mine.

You Weren't There: A History of Chicago Punk 1977-84 is a rare glimpse into a truly one-of-a-kind American underground music scene that documents the impact that the Punk movement has had on the Windy City. Though overlooked in the annals of rock history, Chicago served as an important early supporter of this burgeoning and controversial scene that could be violent and unsavory at times, but always tempered with large doses of humor, art, and intelligence. The limited LP/DVD bundle contains a 20 track vinyl LP of rarities from Chicago’s finest, poster and deleted scenes and rare performances.Factory 25 will be releasing five titles through the remainder of 2009. Lissie, a young songwriter from Rock Island, IL, will release a new EP, Why You Runnin', November 10th, 2009 on Fat Possum Records. Why You Runnin' is a five-song introduction to Lissie and pivots around her big, achingly raw and evocative voice. The songs range from the­­­ hand-clapping, foot-stomping spirited opener "Little Lovin'" to the poignant country cover "Wedding Bells" to the haunting, soulful '60s pop-esque ballads "Everywhere I Go" and "Here Before". These tracks were recorded at her current home in Ojai, CA, and at Echo Mountain Studio in Asheville, NC, with her friend Bill Reynolds (of Band of Horses, who also produced and plays bass on the songs alongside his bandmate Tyler Ramsey, who guests on guitar for some tracks). The hymn-like "Oh Mississippi" was recorded with Ed Harcourt last fall, when Lissie was far from home in London, England.

Greg Laswell is releasing his new EP, Covers, October 6 on Vanguard Records! Produced in a cabin in Mountainaire, Arizona, Laswell played most of the instruments on the five song record, which features covers of Echo & The Bunnymen, Morphine, Mazzy Star, Kate Bush and Kristin Hersh's "Your Ghost" which was recently a featured MP3 on KCRW's "Today's Top Tune".

JUPITER ONE Releases Astounding New “SUNSHOWER” Album

A Sunshower can be a rare occurrence, but when these opposing forces meet, magic and allure is in the air. This is exactly why the NYC-based rockers, Jupiter One, chose the title (inspired by the Japanese short film Dreams by Akira Kurosawa) for their upcoming Ryko album available September 15, 2009. Their far-out freshness mixed with timeless musical inspirations mesh together in a bittersweet indie-pop rock concoction—produced by the group and noted engineer Chris Ribando (Diamond Nights, The Black Crowes, The Fever).

This young quartet—all in their twenties—consisting of K Ishibashi (lead vocals), Zac Colwell (lead guitar), Dave Heilman (drums) and Pat Dougherty (bass), has a knack for unifying their contemporary style with a range of musical influences. Sunshower is the result of Jupiter One's experienced ear. For instance, the dancefloor-friendly “Simple Stones,” filled with handclaps and soulful riffs, boasts a bass line for all ages while blending ‘80s Rolling Stones and MGMT. The epic opener “Volcano” resurrects the youthful spirit of the Beach Boys with The Flaming Lips, while delivering one of the disc’s best choruses. And if Ishibashi conjures The Shins on “Find Me a Place,” then he drops vintage, finger-picking folk on “People in the Mountain”. Lastly but certainly not least, their current single “Flaming Arrow,” a shimmering acoustic folk tune, shoots through with a bumping bass line and New Orleans inspired drum groove. This genre-bending approach creates a hook-heavy opus well suited for our A.D.D. times.

The band’s chain of events since forming has been quite impressive, from selling out NYC’s hot bed of music venues, to releasing their self-titled EP in 2005, to hooking up with music industry legend Jac Holzman (yes, the man who signed The Doors) who ended up sequencing their 2007 debut full-length.

And considering that most of America has already heard their music in NBC’s hit show Heroes or in high profile TV ad campaigns for MLB’s Opening Day ‘09, NASCAR Talladega Race ’09, Madden NFL ’08, Payless and Mazda, it’s clear Jupiter One has come a long way from the traveling circus. Yes, Barnum Kaleidoscope is where Virginian-born K Ishibashi and Austin native Zac Colwell met as touring musicians, and where the two planted the seeds for Jupiter One. Having quit their day jobs, the new Jupiter One, with the addition of former STOMP member and New Jersey-born Dave Heilman and Delaware-raised Pat Dougherty, continue to rock stage shows Stateside and breathe new life into their ever-evolving sound.

As one of the world’s only female Scotch whisky experts, Heather Greene has quite a life. After selling out venues throughout the U.S. and Europe and receiving exposure on major radio stations worldwide, Heather moved to Scotland to explore her heritage and work on her music. It was there that Heather discovered a zeal for whisky. Arriving in Scotland, she threw herself into the world of Scotch, and her voyage of discovery led her to the Scotch Malt Whisky Society in Edinburgh, where, as the first American woman to be invited to serve on the tasting panel and eventually joining the company as a U.S. Glenfiddich Ambassador.It was also in Scotland where her second album, Sweet Otherwise, was conceived. Recorded when she returned to New York in 2008, Sweet Otherwise evokes lush, pastoral landscapes as potently as it captures the urban pulse of a vibrant city, weaving a kaleidoscopic array of musical elements – from classic 1960s-era folk to twangy country to textural electronica to upbeat, hooky 80s pop – into one of year’s most poignant records.

“Why Don’t You Say Yes”

Acclaimed Los Angeles trio The Happy Hollows have announced the release of their debut full length in October. The album, Spells is a culmination of their work with producer and former Mighty Lemon Drops guitarist David Newton (The Little Ones, The Blood Arm), who also produced the group’s 2008 EP Imaginary. The young group's infectious and irreverent noise-pop has earned considerable following up and down the west coast, with their energetic and charismatic performances. Vocalist/guitarist Sarah Negahdari wields ominous riffs and finger-tapped arpeggios while singing with a cherubic-yet-mischievous grin.
