New album due out on Oct 6th 2009
Los Angeles’ The Willowz are back with their vibrant energy and vintage inspired new wave sound. The band’s new album, Everyone, is a strong statement of musical evolution. While staying true to their no-strings-attached soul infused garage rock sound, the band has incorporated stronger crafted pop hooks than ever before.

When The Willowz formed in 2002, they were just teenagers with ambitious dreams. Fast forward seven years and the band has found itself featured on the soundtracks to such award winning films such as “Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind” and “The Science Of Sleep,” and on numerous publications’ “best of the year” lists. Nominated for L.A. Weekly’s “Rock Band of the Year,” making Rolling Stone’s 50 Best Albums of the Year, and coveting the O.C. Weekly’s “#1 Rock Album of the Year” for their 2007 record, Chautauqua, The Willowz are gearing up for the release of their eagerly anticipated forth album, Everyone.

Opening the record is “Break Your Back,” a track that starts out with simple percussion and colorful vocals before crescendo-ing into a massive, heavily layered song, paving the way for the remainder of this dynamic rock album. “I Know” rides the waves between garage rock vigor and an undeniably addictive, anthemic chorus. “Way It Seems” highlights lead vocalist Richie James Follin’s incredible range as his falsetto accompanies the always tempo changing song, making it stand out as an original track that can’t be qualified as either fast paced nor a ballad, but rather manages to be both.

The Willowz once again challenge the rock genre with their unique and beautifully crafted sound. Their luscious harmonies and fiercely rocking melodies make Everyone a gem in their already expansive discography.

Formed in 2008 by Cody Dickinson of the Grammy-nominated North Mississippi Allstars, Hill Country Revue are the "modern blues band for the new generation." HCR represents a return to the juke-joint one-chord trance blues of north Mississippi, styles made famous by local blues legends like R.L. Burnside and Junior Kimbrough. Drawing from the traditional songs and modes of the Hill Country, the band stays true to its roots yet pushes the boundary by incorporating new songs and elements for the next generation. HCR’s debut album, MAKE A MOVE, was released in May 2009 and the band continues to tour in support.

If you haven’t heard French Miami yet, enjoy your last few minutes of peace.
Once their songs get inside your head, they start a permanent loop and you will wake up and go to bed singing along. The only way out of this musical addiction is sleep deprivation.

French Miami’s raucous live shows use rock music structures to hold together more technical musical ideas. Jagged guitars, pulsing synths, and precise stop-start rhythms launch seductive refrains that have forced the crowd’s feet off the floors in post-punk singalong deliriums from SXSW to CMJ. The first time you catch their live show you might be shocked to discover there’s no bassist as their ménage a guitar-synth takes the low end as far as it can go with the head-nodding precision of a mathematical equation.

How is this possible? It helps that they’re multi-taskers. Onstage, French Miami show off the technical cred behind their sound by moving non-stop and playing an average of two instruments apiece, usually at the same time. Singer Jason Heiselmann slides effortlessly between baritone guitar and keyboards while delivering vocal melodies in memorable strands too gritty to be called pop, too irresistibly catchy not to be. Multi-instrumentalist Roland Curtis is usually playing a guitar with one hand and a synth with the other with freakish proficiency. Meanwhile, drummer Chris Crawford does precisely what a drummer should do by anchoring their sound in a minimalist beat, knowing when to let loose and when not to.

This was no easy live show to wrangle onto a record, but French Miami knew the right man for the job. Phil Manley (Trans Am, Fucking Champs) committed their self-titled debut - a unique blend of prog, post-punk, and synth-art rock - to eternity. The album waxes nostalgic on anthemic 90s sounds from Archers of Loaf and Trans Am, tastes the angular grooves of Battles and Holy Fuck, and throws in the earnestness of the Boss and Fugazi to balance the sweet with the sour. The result is terse, jagged rhythms fueled by great hooks fulfilled in noisy abandon.

To listen to Blacklist is to listen to people who have chosen to stand in opposition. Complex and modern themes are wound tightly inside impressionistic lyrics, available to be unravelled by the curious listener or ignored by those who find themselves moved primarily by the force of the music. The band's debut LP, Midnight Of The Century, is raw ambition mixed with raw power. Mixed by Ed Buller (Suede, Slowdive, Pulp, White Lies) and mastered by Howie Weinberg (Muse, Jeff Buckley, Iron Maiden, U2, Nirvana), it is a potent dose of rock and roll maximalism.

When the revolutionary Victor Serge coined the idea of a midnight in the century, he was referring to the dark pact between two of the cruelest tyrants the world had ever seen. And yet Serge is perhaps best known for his rambunctious, stubborn attitude in the face of such darkness: "the course is set on hope," he wrote. It is precisely this marriage of extremity to romantic optimism that characterizes Midnight Of The Century -- not just in the realm of ideas, but musically as well. Despite its density of sound and shadowy atmospheres, the record is the soundtrack to an uplifting journey that is as personal as it is universal. It is also a fitting manifesto announcing the arrival of Blacklist.

"icy sound and quaking bottom end is
counterbalanced by a more inviting, anthemic impulse"
