Friday night was a perfect ending to this summers Rockin' on the Riverfront concert series. The weather was flawless on the Riverwalk as local-boys-done-good Marshall Crenshaw and Mark Farner kicked out a night of hits and memories.
The deck was packed with eager fans as the sun went down and Marshall Crenshaw and his band took the stage. Crenshaw was a good fit to open the night with a solid set of catchy, mellow rockers from his back catalog. Despite the big crowd, it had an intimate feel, like he was just hanging out playing songs for a bunch of old friends.
After dark, Grand Funk's soul brother Mark Farner blasted through a set of funk classic rock, much to the delight of the mostly boomer crowd. He played all the hits and ripped through the 30+ year old tunes like he had just written them. Seeing him lives after years of listening to the records, I was amazed at what an underrated player he is. He had a solid two man rhythm section holding it down while he lit up the stage with guitar solos.
Can't wait to see what next summer has in store!
