Dendura, an Egyptian inspired progressive metal band, combines the seductive vocals of Aziza Poggi (Aziza is Egyptian and Lebanese), the virtuosic guitar talents of Steve Wethy and Paul Stein. Together, the band transcends the boundaries of progressive metal to create a mysterious, unforgettable soundscape.

In April 2006, Dendura released New Life, their debut album that attracted several film directors who licensed tracks for Perception, InZero, and the award-winning film Broken. Dendura also penned a metal version of In the Hall of the Mountain King for the Comedy Central series Monsters Ballz and appeared on the ABC affiliate WZZM (Grand Rapids, MI).

In 2007, New Life gained distribution through Sonic Cathedral, one of the largest online stores for female vocal music. By August, it became one of Sonic Cathedral's top-ten best-selling albums and the band caught the attention of KillZone Records who signed them shortly thereafter.

The factory is a small venue in Rochester, a record store with the top floor cleared out actually. I arrived in the midst of a thunderstorm to find most of Skybox and Gold Motel mingling with friends and fans outside. The crowd drifted into the hot, dank air inside as a young Cash Harrison opened with his acoustic. The second act, Skybox, brought so much energy and character that, despite its small size, the crowd instantly forgot their sweat drenched clothes and danced through the entire set.

It’s the same set they’ll play at Lollapalooza this summer and it’s very solid. They mixed acapella-worthy vocals with some original, electric guitar driven music. Although Skybox is difficult to follow, pop band Gold Motel finished the night with some excellent California summer music.

The show was great, and a repeat act at the same venue goes down July 15th.

Freshtight Designs is seeking table vendors, wall artists, and musicians for its second annual Emerge and See event on Saturday, September 11th, 2010 at The Crofoot Ballroom in Pontiac, MI.

Emerge and See is an annual live local art and music fusion event featuring some of the area’s best creative individuals.  Our goal is to bring the community together to witness a night of artists, authors and musicians with a do it together attitude rather than a do it yourself attitude.  There will be live performances by bands, DJs, emcees, breakdancers, graffiti artists and screen printers.

Last year we had over 400 attendees and press and interviews from such publications as The Detroit Free Press, Metromix, Metro Times, Real Detroit, as well as many others.

PHOTOS & REVIEW: Dave Matthews Band @ DTE

The mainstream king of Jambands, Dave Matthews Band, took the stage Wednesday night at DTE Energy Music Theater in Clarkston, and MCB's Andrew Bender was there - read on for Drew's thoughts on the show and some shots from the start of the show.

Because I live in Ferndale and work in midtown at Wayne State, getting up to Pine Knob/DTE for a show in the middle of the week can be a bit of a challenge. Work, traffic, and my seething loathing for Palace Entertainment only makes it less enjoyable. Last year there was a serious last-minute credential SNFAU when I tried to cover the sold-out Dave Matthews Band show at DTE, and I ended up giving my photo pass to fellow MCB photographer Gene Schilling who got some seriously sweet shots of that gig - so I knew I the bar was set pretty high for me this year. Knowing that I-75 turns into a parking lot in the hour or two before any major event at the DTE outdoor pavillion, I made my way up a bit early and did a little work at a Panera nearby (thanks for the WiFi, and sorry I stole that fork from you guys - I'll try to return it some day) before taking the scenic back road in to the venue, where I hardly saw another car and slid effortlessly into the lot like a hot knife into butter. After getting my gear in order I walked up to the gate, waited around for a bit at the instructions of the Palace Entertainment flunky before I signed the totally absurd photo release form he provided. When I asked the flunky, 'Where are the other photographers?' He informed me that nobody had been credentialed to shoot the opening act, Martin Sexton. I'd never before encountered a situation where the opening act required a separate credential from the headliner - you'd think they'd want some exposure, right?? So, instead of spending the next 10 minutes berating the hapless dude for his company's (or the tour's) ridiculous policies - I went and relaxed by the car with a beer from a friendly couple two cars down from mine. While I was waiting, I got word from my good friend and former roommate that he was on his way up to see if he could find a cheap ticket in the lot - so I figured I'd stick around after shooting and chill for a minute. When the time arrived, I made my way back to the gate and was escorted with another few photographers to the photo pit. People lacking pavilion tickets were asking if I could get them in and all I could tell them was, "Sorry - I don't even have a ticket, and I leave after I shoot the first few songs," but I don't think they believed me (anybody with a laminate surely can make magic happen, right?).

When Dave Matthews and company took the stage, the entire place exploded with applause and cheers - these people were seriously psyched to be there and wouldn't be anywhere else, given a choice. I must admit that although I'm a big fan of jam bands, improvisational music, rock with fiddles and horns, and so many other things that should make me a natural DMB fan - I've just never really gotten into his whole catalog. Yes, I listened to and enjoyed their album 'Under the Table & Dreaming' when it came out when I was in college (damn, I'm really dating myself) but I'll just say that there were other bands that I connected with far more and leave it at that. So, I've seen Dave Matthews on several occasions, but can't name most of the songs. I have enjoyed their newest album, 'Big Whiskey and the GrooGrux King' and their performance of 'Shake Me Like A Monkey,' and 'Time Bomb,' off that album last night were both pretty hot - but I'm getting ahead of myself.

After shooting the first few songs, my escorts showed my fellow photogs and me the door. With the crappy cell coverage up there, texting was the best option. After a few back and forths, I found out my friend had scored us some cheap tickets in the lot - $30 total for 2 tickets that were priced WAY higher was enough to get me back into the show, despite my lack of enthusiasm for the band. So, we had a couple of drinks in the lot and wandered into the show about an hour into their almost 3 hour long set. We'd flipped a coin to decide whether we should bring an umbrella in and tails won - so we took our chances with the sky looking increasingly ominous and the ticket taker saying that the radar said the storm was on its way.

My friend isn't a much bigger DMB fan than I, but he does know a few more songs. At some point we decided that we needed to try to blend in more so we started screaming and clapping. A LOT. People barely gave us a glance. So, I decided to up the ante just a tad. It wasn't that I wanted to be an asshole - well, not exactly. Those lot beers loosened up my inhibitions just enough that I was able to reach back into my memory to different occasions at various shows in my past where I'd encountered 'That Guy.' There are lots of different versions of 'That Guy,' and he can certainly be more or less offensive, annoying, obnoxious, or ridiculous. I conjured up an image and became 'That Guy' for a brief period of time, depending on where we were on the lawn. At one point, remembering the kid whose constant chattering started to wear on me during a show I saw last year, I just kept saying over and over rather loudly, "WOW! - THIS IS AWESOME!' and although it was fun, I think that statement was maybe less than 100% genuine. Well - the music was good and fun and the crowd was very enthusiastic - the light show in the sky was pretty sweet as distant lightning kept illuminating the crowd on the lawn for brief moments. A hot performance of their darker song 'Gravedigger' started my buddy yelling. Apparently, he thought this was a good way to blend in. So, my friend just kept on yelling, whistling, and cheering. As we only had one pavilion ticket, he slyly 'stubbed me down,' to the pavilion, where we found empty seats for the end of the set and encore. Shortly thereafter, a random frat boy appeared next to us (I was afraid were were in his seats), but he just sparked a spliff and offered it to the 40-something yuppie in front of us whose only response was - 'YES! Thank God!" The band closed the set with their popular song 'Ants Marching' before coming back for an encore of 'Busted Stuff,' followed by 'Time Bomb,' and finishing with an admittedly AWESOME version of Dylan's 'All Along the Watchtower.' Ok Dave (and band) - you do know how to put on a show.

And yes, they are bringing along with them the performance art piece that made them famous last year at at Yale University in New Haven Connecticut and the year before at MeadowBrook/Oakland University…titled, 'FUNY AS HELL: a baptism under fire'! (Funy actually pronounced, Funny.)

This time SATORI CIRCUS and the Dambacher Brothers, have another opportunity of reinterpreting their very own creation, without slighting the audience who loved the first presentation of 'Funy As Hell'.

Using Dante's The Divine Comedy as the framework you are guided through a labyrinth of questions, of spirit, of destiny, of hope, of despair, and pure naughtiness: all the same musings. You witness the travels of a man who is lost in a dream between the here and there of Purgatory, Hell and Paradise: the same premise. Combining music, song, costumes, sound & lights, movement, film, cabaret and enlightenment your perception is obscured as to what performance art is, or what it could be…and yes, these are all the same contraptions used to embellish a story.

Blurring what is typically thought of as theatre, SATORI CIRCUS and the Dambachers will bring the audience through the subterranean worlds of Purgatory, Hell and Paradise to witness, participate in and analyze the situations that our protagonist, our hero (or anti-hero), manages to become involved with…deliberately or accidentally.

Be prepared for the unknown and come with an open heart and head to witness a performance art hybrid rarely seen in this Detroit Metro Area. We guarantee that you have never seen anything like this. D'Fest brings Detroit an exciting new Festival Series

Every Summer, the streets of Detroit are filled with activity.  From the big festival crowds to the long lines at Belle Isle Park, Detroit summers are always hot. 

This summer will be even hotter as Tandem Entertainment brings their collective efforts together to present the D'Fest.

Sunday June 27th, from 2pm-midnight, D'Fest, the Indoor / Outdoor Dance Ritual, will draw Detroit House & Techno enthusiasts together for a 10 hour event, showcasing 20 DJs on 2 stages.  Inspired by the diversity of the audiences found at the Electronic Music stages during the cities summer festivals, and fueled by the unfortunate cancellation of City Fest's Pure Detroit stage, the producers of D'fest decided to launch this event series to create a year-round platform for audiences of all diversities to gather together.

The city of Detroit has a musical tradition unlike any other city on the planet.  Many of the worlds most well known musicians have their roots right here in Detroit.  Dance music not only has roots here, but also plays a large role in the culture of the city during the summer months.  The organizers of D'Fest have devised a programming format that has a main mission to showcase all of Detroit's leading House & Techno event production companies.  The festival also promises to offer a platform for dance music enthusiasts to unify under one roof on an ongoing basis.

The first D'Fest takes place on Sunday June 27th and the inaugural edition has an all star lineup of international superstars. 

Many of Detroit's most in-demand performers will be on hand including Anthony "Shake" Shakir, DJ Minx, Norm Talley and DJ Seoul to name a few.

Sponsored by Spectacles (http://drupal.spectaclesdetroit.com/?q=product) and doDetroit (http://www.dodetroit.com) this festival series will extend throughout the year and is expected to occur every 6 weeks, always on a Sunday. 

 

The chosen day of Sunday was purposely selected so Detroit promoters can have time to take a break

from their own busy worlds and unify together in the music we lovingly refer to as our House Music church.

Led by a team of people from Tandem Entertainment, with support from U&I Design, the programming of this event series was designed to encourage the unified diversity typically found at Detroit's festivals year round.  The coalition has decided to use the TV Bar as the location for this festival series.  The TV Bar is a venue that sees a diverse series of event promoters and is the perfect location for D'Fest.  With a patio and two indoor rooms on the first floor, plus with another large room on the second floor, the venue has room to grow as the event grows.

Year round, Detroit's music scene thrives.  We take great pride in our city and we shout it from the roofs with our music.

The next show at the Grosse Pointe Art Center, Humor Me, just might tickle your fancy. Itʼs time to lighten-up and have a little fun. Paint a picture, paint the town or paint yourself. Take a look at things from a humorous angle. Make someone smile! Intake for the exhibit is June 15-19, 2010. There is plenty of time to poke a little fun into your next work of art.

When all of the submissions are in, the circus comes to Grosse Pointe, “Satori Circus,” that is, in the form of Russell Taylor, juror for the Humor Me exhibit. Russell Taylorʼs moniker is taken from the band Bauhausʼ song, “Kicked in the Eye.” While a pie in the face sounds like more fun than a kick in the eye, Satori Circus is coming to Grosse Pointe and will get an eye full of art to judge at the Grosse Pointe Art Center.

So put on a happy face and get to work. Be sure that your submission(s) will be at the Grosse Pointe Art Center between June 15 and 19 for Satori Circus to judge. And remember, “When youʼre smiling, when youʼre smiling, the whole world smiles with you!”

DETROIT ARTISTS MARKET PRESENTS

“WORDAGE” EXHIBITION
June 25 – July 24, 2010

The Detroit Artists Market (DAM) is pleased to present “Wordage”. Opening Friday, June 25, 2010, DAM will host a Public Opening and reception that evening from 6 to 9 p.m. Gallery visitors can meet the artists – and will have an opportunity to view and purchase the wide array of paintings, sculptures, photography, and mixed media on exhibit.

This year’s summer exhibition at the Detroit Artists Market was curated by Jack O. Summers, artist and educator. contemporary art by 25 Michigan artists. “Wordage” Exhibition runs through July 24, 2010.

Exhibiting artists: Suzanne Anderson, Randy Asplund, Barbara Brown, Loralei R. Byatt, Israel Davis, Rose E. DeSloover, Andrea Eis, Dave Fischer, Lynn Galbreath, Dick Goody, John Gutoskey, Michelle A. Hegyi, Alvey Jones, Christine Monhollen, Scott Northrup, Ann Pearlman, Catherine Peet, Julie Renfro, Jaye Schlesinger, Stephen William Schudlich, Ryan Standfest, Kaiser Suidan, Sally Schluter Tardella, Graceann Warn and Vagner M. Whitehead.“This show features works which combine text and images in very compelling and fresh ways”, notes curator Jack O. Summers.

“Together they allow the viewer to use both sides of the brain to take in these pieces, which brings more of the viewer and their own interpretations to the art. Utilizing images and text together provide a more subtle and reflective experience as opposed to the daily bombardment of words and images we all receive through our televisions and computers. The artwork in ‘Wordage’ are intellectually engaging, each in their own very different ways.”Jack O. Summers’ primary focus has been making and teaching art.

His primary training was in drawing and traditional photography. These disciplines morphed into digital art and collage. Jack’s education in the arts has been both formal and informal. His education began in the Detroit Public School System and continued at the Tyler School of Art, The New School for Social Research, Wayne State University, and the College for Creative Studies. He has taught at Grosse Pointe South High School, College for Creative Studies, and the International Academy of Art and Technology.

DAM’s Elements Gallery features artist Ryan Asplund.

In contrast to the contemporary styles of works in the main gallery, Mr. Asplund’s art directly reaches back into the past. He will present a gallery talk from 2 to 4 PM on Saturday, June 26, 2010, discussing his work in creating illuminated manuscript art. “The history and literature of Europe was handed down to us in books made entirely by hand,” says Mr. Asplund. “The pages were made from skins, the colors from plants, rocks, animals and alchemy.

Every page was written and painted with tools made from nature. Few artists today even understand these processes, let alone practice them.” Randy Asplund brings these ancient art forms back to life, creating neo-medieval and contemporary works as if they were made by an artist of the Middle Ages. His completely original pages and whole books use the same historical materials, and he even makes authentic tools so that the feel and effects are right.

I love this movie. I really love this movie. Even still, I confess, it took me several viewings before I was able to watch it straight-through without the hauntingly gorgeous, but wholly soporific, soundtrack triggering my narcolepsy and landing me face-down on the carpet.

It was worth it. Every time.

I'm an unabashed fan of Kubrick, and so are you — if you've ever loved a movie, so are you. This is a new opportunity, though, to see the genre-changing film in 70mm format.

Friday, June 25, and Saturday, June 26, the Redford Theatre presents 2001: A Space Odyssey (70mm print, 1968) starring Gary Lockwood and Keir Dullea, directed by Stanley Kubrick (Oscar for Best Special Visual Effects). Friday's screening is at 8 pm, and there will be two showings on Saturday at 2 pm and 8 pm. All tickets are general admission, and cost is $6.00 which includes free parking. The Redford Theatre is located at the NE corner of Grand River Ave. and Lahser Rd. in the heart of Detroit's Old Redford neighborhood.

Patrons get much more than a great movie experience on the Redford's silver screen. This week will feature the Redford's original theatre pipe organ and piano music, followed the magnificence of 70mm-where the enormity of the screen puts you in the picture. Twinkling stars in the auditorium ceiling complete the space odyssey effect!

Live Music: Welcoming tunes from the lobby piano set the mood when the box office and doors open 1 hour before showtime. So Duende gave their longtime bass player Jason Worden the grandest of sendoffs by releasing a new vinyl LP at Club Bart in Ferndale a few weeks ago. Titled "Way In Is Out", the record features 6 songs ranging from dance to psychedelia to straight ahead garage rock and roll all with a western desert twinge. The title track is the song that made me turn into an insta-fan for Duende the first time I saw them perform live. The lyrics are drawn from an anecdote reminisced by music legend Dale Beavers regarding a mystical card game. The closer, "Boss Radio" is a throwback to a now defunct radio station known for playing local Detroit up and comers the MC5 back in the day. Word has it when Duende was on their recent tour to New Orleans, they played "Boss Radio" and the crowd dug it so much that the band was gifted a bottle of whiskey in exchange for performing the song a second time. This is a great record from one of the best Detroit acts today. I don't believe it's for sale online quite yet, but keep checking the Loco Gnosis label site or you can purchase "Way In Is Out" at Cadieux Cafe June 26th where Duende will be playing with Spitting Nickles and Madame XD. Seriously, buy this record!!!

Child Bite celebrated the release of their album, “The Living Breathing Organ Summer,” Saturday night at the Magic Bag with a phenomenal performance and light show. Child Bite took the stage with frenetic musical insanity and an intensity that is difficult to match. They made sure attendees got a taste of their latest creation by giving everyone a free copy of the album, either on vinyl, CASSETTE, or CD.

The sweet sounds of FAWN kicked off the night while Bars of Gold made sure they had the crowd’s full attention with a drop kick of sound. BoG frontman Marc Paffi overcame a dead mic by simply screaming the songs at the crowd, later he ensured the functionality of the mic by placing it in his mouth for safe keeping. Silverghost played a stellar set of synth and guitar laden rock, complete with a cover of Nirvana’s Son of a Gun and back up from Sean Connery starring in Zardoz.

Be sure to play your new Child Bite album(be it cassette, CD, or vinyl),

I'm a new fan of Steel Panther. They bring back the 80's, like they should've been. Most bands wanted the freedom to call their songs, "Fat Girl, Stripper Girl, Big Boobs", basically whatever they wanted to. Well, it's a new era, under a new regime, Clinton would be proud with the song, "Eatin' Ain't Cheatin'."

Tease your hair to epic heights, put on your tightest leather pants, slash your shirt to make Hulk Hogan jealous, put on makeup to put Poison to shame, it's the 80's all over again. This time, it's all you wanted and more. Excess in the extreme.

This is 80's hair metal done up right. The first listen thru, you'll recognize Def leopard, White Snake, Extreme, and others that I haven't yet. Then you listen to the lyrics, and you're like "WHAT", did he just say that. YUP! he sure did. And that's the fun part. You get great hair metal music, with the aughts(00) lyrics.

You need to be at this show, it's the new 80's hair metal.

Photography and vintage gowns featured in visually stunning book will be on display in an exhibition in the South Cottage at Ford House through September 7.  Admittance is included with regular admission.
