PHOTOS: Rock the Bells 2009 by Andrew Bender

MCB's Andrew Bender was up at the DTE Music Center on Sunday for the 2009 Rock the Bells tour as it rolled through Michigan.

Billed as the premier hip hop festival, RTB brought such highly regarded artists as Tech Nine, Big Boi of Outkast fame, Reflection Eternal with Talib Kweli, the Roots, and NAS with Damian 'Jr. Gong' Marley, and old skool legend KRS-One was the master of ceremonies keeping everybody entertained between sets. Busta Rhymes was slated to also be performing at the Detroit show, but he had to cancel at the last minute, supposedly due to a conflict with the BET awards the same night and the venue was offering a refund to anybody who wanted it before they entered the venue. It's unclear how many people took advantage of that, and Palace Entertainment was not forthcoming with numbers regarding attendance, but clearly it was a pretty dismal turnout for an amazing day of music.

As a photographer and writer, I hate getting jacked around by the venue and PR people who don't have their $#!t together, and such was the case on Sunday. Without any information or instructions, I finally made it to meet up with their contact to get my photo pass only to be informed that following the first 3 songs the credentialed photographers were to be escorted outside the gates to wait for the next act to go on. I was fortunate to also be granted a press credential, so after the 3 songs of shooting, I ran back to drop my camera gear at my car, go back into the venue to see a few songs and make some notes, then run back to get the camera and repeat this five or six times. What crap. Such was my experience at the Rock the Bells. This was apparently the policy of the tour, not Palace Entertainment, although they couldn't or wouldn't actually show me anything with this policy written on it.Usually I prefer to see shows at smaller venues from bars to theaters because those giant stadium and pavilion venues only care about one thing - getting as much of the concert goers dough as they can squeeze out. Sure bars and theaters want that too, but at the pavilions and arenas, the whole thing is set up to make their job easier, not to enhance the audience's experience.

Enough bitching - here's a little bit about the actual festival and the music.

I showed up after a few of the earlier acts had already performed, just in time to see Tech Nine take the stage with a thumpin' off the hook set. Unfortunately, it seemed that the venue was less than one-third full, although the audience that was there was definitely enjoying it. Following Tech Nine was the project Reflection Eternal featuring Talib Kweli and DJ Hi-Tek. They pulled out some of Kweli's older joints and some newer material and soon enough they had arms wavin in the air (like they just didn't care?) and the crowd on its feet. In between acts, old school rap legend KRS-ONE kept the crowd entertained with some mad freestyle and some proselytizing about what hip hop really is. To quote the band Sublime:

Watch him he'll take hip-hop to a higher ground.
cuz I know (How do I know?)
And I know because of KRS-ONE.

After Kweli and Hi-Tek were the band I was most excited to see - the Roots, who I've seen a few times in their new steady gig as the house band on the new Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. Several bands have played on the show with the Roots as their backing band, and it's just SICK! Playing old favorites and some newer tunes off of their newer albums like Rising Down, I'm always impressed by this hip hop band that includes ?uestlove on drums, Black Thought spitting some great rhymes, Tuba Gooding Jr. on sousaphone (how many hip hop bands have a tuba player??), Kamal Gray on percussion, Captain Kirk Douglas on guitar, and Owen Biddle on bass. With the Roots and other acts, it's always interesting to see how they arrange the music - always different than studio albums and always adds a novel element that keeps the audience and fans engaged.

After the Roots was Big Boi from the hip hop group the Outkast who brought a taste of the dirty South up North to Michigan. Even though the sound was pretty messed up during his set, Big Boi's southern hip hop style still came through as the Hotlanta star brought his A-game. The last spot of the day belonged to NAS and Damian 'Jr. Gong' Marley who brought an incredible mix of hip hop and reggae to the day as NAS would spit some lyrics to a reggae back beat after which Damian would perform his own or his father Bob Marley's songs, including a great cover of the hit 'War.'

Even by the time the headliners were performing, the venue never got close to half full, which was a shame for such a great day of music. I see a lot of bands skip Detroit on their tours and it's really too bad that the people of Motown and Detroit Rock City can't make it out to shows. Of course, when the economy is in the toilet, a LOT of people have been out of work for a LONG time, and things don't seem to be getting much better, it's hard to justify even a $20 lawn ticket (particularly when that comes up to $30 after fees and all that - but that's a rant for another day). But you'd think the promoters and venue would do more to help fill the seats. Apparently even a stage full of great artists just isn't enough - hopefully as the economy improves and people's job situations start to turn around, bands won't be taking a risk just by coming to Detroit.

Werd!!

Canadian songbird Melissa McClelland is about to release Victoria Day, her third full-length album produced by husband Luke Doucet. For a taste of what to expect, check out the MP3 of her beautiful duet with Ron Sexsmith “Seasoned Lovers.”And if you haven’t already, be sure to give the gritty and sassy “GlenRio” a listen.

If These Trees Could Talk

Above The Earth, Below The Sky Available NOW

If These Trees Could Talk return with their long awaited full length album “Above the Earth, Below the Sky.” Recorded during the summer of 2008 under the watchful eye of Tim Gerak (6P7), the album is a dark emotional journey that picks up where the debut EP left off. With the roots of the album firmly planted within the industrial boomtown of Akron, Ohio, The Trees have made every effort to evoke the desperation and triumph felt by a city in despair and rebirth.

Utilizing a dynamic range of auditory explorations fluctuating from delicate to deafening The Trees have once again provided their listeners a primed and ready canvas upon which they may paint their own visions of chaos and serenity. The types of images only seen when our eyes are closed or when the true nature of a world operating under insanity and irrationality is exposed. While maintaining integrity in their music, The Trees have managed to forge their own artistic path in the face of many gimmick and copy-cat bands. They have managed to self-release and maintain steady sales of both their albums to date, while pairing up with The Mylene Sheath to release their albums in the vinyl format to rave reviews around the globe. In addition, The Trees have solidified their presence in the post-rock world by licensing “Malabar Front” from their 2006 EP for inclusion in the online trailer for the Sony PLAYSTATION®3 release “inFamous”.

After recording and performing live with such musical juggernauts as David Bowie, Elvis Costello, Perry Farrell, Moby, and Ronnie Spector, The Tall Pines brings Petruk's silky alto to the forefront. Described by NPR as sounding like "the lost sister of Dusty Springfield" with a voice that has the ability "to melt the frost off your windshield," Petruk’s singing perfectly compliments Davis’ clever songwriting and the band’s skillful backing. Campfire Songs moves seamlessly between raucous, foot stomping jams on songs like "Good Woman" and "Seniorita" to such crooning country ballads as the aptly titled, "No One Sings Like You." Those longing for the nostalgia of country music’s past eras along with those who have an appreciation for such modern day acts as Jenny Lewis or She & Him can easily find something to love in The Tall Pines timeless sound.

Original Stranglers Front Man Hugh Cornwell Releases New Album, Hooverdam Available for Free Download!(In Stores September 8, 2009; Invisible Hands Music)

See Cornwell on tour in September

Hugh Cornwell is a man of the people.

The original vocalist, guitarist and main songwriter for punk and new-wave legends The Stranglers, has made his new album, Hooverdam, available for free download to anyone and everyone… right now!

The music is available worldwide from Hugh’s website , which can be viewed in twelve languages (English, French, German, Spanish, Portuguese, Arabic, Farsi, Russian, Mandarin, Turkish, Italian and Japanese), making Hugh’s music freely available to most of the world’s population. Why make it available for free? “Everything that’s ever been recorded or filmed is now online and free – whether the copyright owners like it or not, and any work of artists that is honest – either from decades ago or right now – has intellectual value that will always translate into monetary value,” explains Charles Kennedy, head of Invisible Hands Music.

This is a great record, made without ProTools, AutoTune, or any other piece of performance-enhancing stuff. It comes from the heart of a great thinker, writer and musician, and will be shared and listened to for decades to come. Physical copies will be available on vinyl and as a triple-sleeved digi-pak CD/DVD, which will contain Hugh’s film “Blueprint,” featuring live studio performance inter-spliced with an interview with Hugh at the Tate Gallery in London. Both Hooverdam and “Blueprint” were recorded in Toerag Studios with producer Liam Watson (best known for producing the White Stripes’ Elephant).

The music itself is a rollicking mix of rhythm & blues, rockabilly and post-punk. Early on the disc, “Going to the City” rolls and blares like a train shimmying its way down the tracks, a motor-mouthed wordsmith riding on top. “Delightful Nightmare” follows, slinking into view on a murky bass line to tell the tale of a ghostly lover.

Closing out the album, Hugh gives us jangly guitars, a surprise saxophone solo and a dose of punk attitude in “Banging on at the Same Old Beat.” “So give me one more hit / Can’t get enough of it / And if you’re tired of it / Well I don’t give a shit.”

"Those Darlins will soon be roaming this great nation, bringing all Americans together the only way we know how: sheer freak spectacle. But don't just come see the spectacle, be the spectacle. We want you. We dare you. We, in fact, need you. Have a drink, have a dance. Don’t worry about the environment being intolerant, too cool, too lame, too country, too anything. EVERYONE is invited; you’re one of us."

"It’s Summer 2009, and, damnit, be here with us in the now. Don't let the economic downturn ruin your appetite for some basic human relief: a good time.Say yes... we already have. And we are bringing gifts (records, drinks, maybe even a kiss from our merch-man Byron) to the folks ready to lead the charge with us at every show. Grow some fur, burn your laurels, let us see your inner spirit animal. "

And, until then, enjoy Red Light Love

WHERE:
DOWNTOWN WYANDOTTE, CORNER OF ELM AND FIRST

WHEN:
JULY 8-11, 10AM-9PM

Why the heck should you go to Wyandotte?
The ‘dotte Arts Project presents its third annual summer festival July 8th-11th.
The ‘dotte Arts Project, the ‘dAP, presents a stellar festival of emerging arts, live music and art demonstrations during the Wyandotte Street Art Fair, July 8th- 11th.
The festival will be on the old theatre lot at First and Elm.

The City of Wyandotte provides its own power, has an extensive recycling program and is soon to be home to four windmills. To continue in the self-sustainable spirit of Wyandotte our music stage is solar powered for the second year! Equipment provided courtesy of Cresit Energy of Wyandotte. Last year the ‘dAP stage was run completely by solar power which saved not only energy but the city thousands of dollars in money for electricity to run the music stage. The batteries ran on stored power one of the days which was stormy and overcast for most of the day. The ‘dAP is honored to showcase such a forward thinking company with products that work so well!
For more information go to www.cresitenergy.com

The music stage is going to feature some of the best local acts that metro-Detroit has to offer. The headlining performance will be Dan Miller (of Blanche and Goober in the Peas). Some other great highlights include Silver Ghost a side project of ex- guitarist and vocalist of the Von Bondies, Marcie Bolen. Also included are some acts more local to Downriver including Hiding in Thailand, Dune Buggy Attack Battalion and Jura.
The music line up varies with the Friday line up being that of a more rockin’ nature and Saturday will feature a indie, folk, bluegrass feel. The Friday and Saturday line ups were set up by The Crofoot which is working with the ‘dAP on many projects to come.
Go to www.thecrofoot.com .

Live art demonstrations including a mural by a myriad of artists. The Henry Ford Pottery and Ceramics club will be throwing pots and making other ceramic objects during the festival. Children will be invited to make shirts on site too!

Mark Bommarito sculpts with found objects and the objects
he found for this outdoor sculpture are gas station signs.
He created it as a social commentary about our oil appetite
and what it’s doing to our foreign relations.
It’s going to be 15 feet tall!

The Roosevelt High School Art Club, Alumni and Tawnya Au, the art teacher in charge of it all, will be working with kids of all ages to paint t-shirts. Part of the proceeds for this will go to help the arts at Roosevelt High School. “It really makes us happy to do this”, says Jeremy E. Hansen, co-chair of the ‘dAP, “because it melds with our mission to promote and proliferate the arts of Wyandotte.” Robert Stanzler is a man who supports the arts and is doing it in a big way by donating all the shirts and the silk screening of the design on them.
He is the person in charge of www.detroitmfg.com .

Friday and Saturday there will be a full schedule of stunt bike riding by Ron Thomas. Ron Thomas attended Roosevelt High School is now a professional BMX stunt rider and owns Rise Above Entertainment. Thomas will be performing on Friday and Saturday at 1pm, 5pm and 8pm in the ‘dAP area.

The best part of the festival are the over 30 emerging artists selling their wares. This is the highlight and purpose of the ‘dAP Summer Festival to promote emerging artists. Many of these artists are beginning their art careers and some of them are on the cusp of hitting the scene in a major way. The work varies from low brow to traditional with a mixture of jewelry and some funky craft making in between.

“We strive to embrace the arts at all levels,” says Aimee Rodriguez, co-chair of the ‘dAP, “One of the best ways to ensure that art continues in any community is to sell their work especially the work of artists who are just now trying to figure out what they want to do.”

2009 is the first year the ‘dAP is going to have an artist create the t-shirt design. We are proud to announce that the first design will be created by Audrey Pongracz. Pongracz is on fire this year being voted Best Local Artist by Real Detroit Weekly and she was also elected one of Six Artists to Watch Under 30 by the Metrotimes. Pongracz started her art gallery career at River’s Edge Gallery in Wyandotte.
She continues to show at River’s Edge Gallery and at 323 East of Royal Oak.

Pongracz has shown with the ‘dAP since its inception in 2007. She is extremely supportive of the ‘dAP and the ‘dAP mission to promote emerging artists. We are honored to feature her design this year. The squid is a cephalopod that inks to protect itself from predators which is similar to what many artists do when they paint or create. The image created features a squid is hugging the ‘dAP as a submarine. We hope artists continue to embrace the ‘dAP because we certainly embrace and want to help them!

This year the ‘dAP will prove to top its first two years with vim and vigor July 8th-11th at the corner of Elm and First in downtown Wyandotte during the Wyandotte Street Art Fair.

PHOTOS: MISS DERRINGER @ the Crofoot Pontiac 6-24-09 by RebeccaMich

The self-proclaimed Blondie meets Johnny Cash meets the Misfits entertaining rock band played their second ever Detroit show at the Crofoot this past Wednesday night. MISS DERRINGER, based out of Los Angeles, is no stranger to Detroit however.

Influenced by groups like the Ravonettes and Envy, a Japanese Noise group, Miss Derringer hopes their being unique characters and eclectic sound will be an influence on future music to come.

When asked what music inspires them, before I even finish asking MD, “The Detroit Cobras”, who actually have their first album on the same label as MD, is shouted out immediately. Morgan, Ben, Cody and Sylvan, rounding out the members of Miss Derringer, had nothing but praise for the city of Detroit, and believe strongly in the music and art scene here and what it has done to shape culture.

This band is fresh, and puts on a killer live performance. Lead singer Liz McGrath is also an LA based artist, which shines through in her unique look and the way she handles the stage and works the crowd as if the show was delivered personally to everyone that came. Nothing gets Miss Derringer going more than the positive vibe they receive from a crowd. That they did, taking time to sign each and every autograph, pose with fans and chat. When talking about their new record, Morgan Slade, songwriter/guitar, and husband to Liz McGrath, calls it something that would remind you of an Irish Mob War from the 60s.

Winter Hill, on July 14th.

Music on the Brain - by MCB's Andrew Bender

Music on the Brain
I’d written most of this week’s column before I’d heard yesterday that self-anointed King of Pop, Michael Jackson, had died yesterday at 50 years old. I’ve read and watched a bit of the coverage going on and can’t help but think back to when Princess Diana died in terms of the outpouring of reflection, reminiscence, sentiment and emotion. I was 10 years old when Thriller came out, and it was one of the first albums my older brother and I owned - we listened to it way too many times. I’m sorry to admit it, but I never bought parachute pants (I’ve just never been that cool), I never mastered the moonwalk, and I never danced around with a single glove. Despite everything else (and I do mean ‘everything’) Jackson was a songwriter, musician, and performer the likes of which we shall never see again.

Glide Magazine’s Hidden Track section has a great piece today with a number of examples of jazz, rock, and jam bands from Phish to Miles Davis to Santana that have covered Jackson’s work.
Click here to check it out. I highly recommend it.

As a memory researcher, I find it amazing that we can engage in mental time travel, merely with the trigger of something like a photo or a song. Seeing images from the Thriller video brings me back to when I was ten or eleven watching MTV in my best friend’s living room – I can practically smell my friend’s shaggy golden retriever basking in the sun as we stared in amazement at the video’s special effects. So what will I (try to) remember Michael Jackson for? Here’s a few things that come to mind, but the list is by no means exhaustive: Michael Jackson wrote ‘We Are the World’ with Lionel Richie, he collaborated with Paul McCartney and Quincy Jones, or
As Dave Chappelle said, “He wrote Thriller. THRILLER.”
He was the Scarecrow in the movie adaptation of ‘The Wiz,’ and he taught me that human beings can move their bodies in almost unimaginable ways (no, he didn’t teach me personally – sheesh). Most of all, I have the utmost admiration for all that Michael Jackson did to bridge divides between people through projects such as the ‘Heal the World,’ ‘We Are the World,’ being a voice for HIV/AIDS in America. Rest in peace Michael.

On a lighter note, last week I wrote about expectations in music and made some comparisons about how our memory and experience fuels both our expectations and our appreciation of art and music. To some degree, music appreciation is all about taste. Some people love old school hip hop, whereas others might prefer radio friendly country music. Similarly, I suspect that many jazz enthusiasts probably have little appreciation for or understanding of a lot of punk and scream or noise rock. However, as I mentioned last week there’s the idea of openness to new and different genres than one may otherwise be comfortable with. To me, it’s largely about letting go of, or at least managing, one’s expectations. A lot of people go to the same restaurants, order the same dishes, and are perfectly content with that – there’s no risk and the reward is predictable. Others like to try new things, risking a bad meal with the potential for discovering something new and amazing.

I like to think of pop music as similar to fast food, or perhaps to those family feedbag restaurants like Fridays, Applebees, or Bennigans. What you’re getting has been vetted and tested to be widely acceptable and although individual tastes may vary, it’s as widely appealing as possible.

Another analogy for pop music that I’ve lately been using comes from psychology – specifically from research on our perceptions of physical beauty and attractiveness. A number of studies have shown that what makes someone’s face physically attractive, at least in a scientific sense, is being as average as possible. However, by ‘average’ I don’t mean plain, but rather in the statistical or mathematical sense where features and spacing between those features is all in the middle. Nose not too big or too small, eyes not too far apart or to close together, and so on. Similarly, a lot of the most popular music doesn’t push the boundaries and seems to be an amalgam of acceptable traits – not too long or too short, standard verse-verse-chorus-verse-chorus-verse-bridge-chorus format – anything that doesn’t make the listener think about changing the station. To stretch the analogy a bit further, it’s often those with mostly ‘average’ facial features and one deviant feature (nose a bit too big, eyes too far apart, etc) who we consider to be truly beautiful – almost as if they’re more human and more interesting or accessible as a result of the defining characteristic. Similarly, I think that a lot of the ‘great’ or ‘break out’ pop music has stuck to most of the formulaic tendencies of such radio-friendly tunes but has made some significant deviation from that formula keeping the general framework palatable and familiar while doing something different enough to make people take notice. In that sense, pop music and science have a great deal in common – both take existing ideas and build on them in relatively small increments to generate something a little different that’s interesting and hopefully somewhat novel.

If you extend the metaphor to philosopher Thomas Kuhn’s idea of paradigm shifts – after all of these small modifications and tweaks to existing models, a whole new approach can come about that has a lasting impact on what’s being done after the acceptance of the new approach. Kuhn’s definition of paradigms was restricted just to science, but others have since adopted it to all sorts of other areas. Examples of this include Elvis Pressley and white boys making rock and roll, Jimi Hendrix changing the concept of how to use/play the electric guitar, David Byrne and Brian Eno’s 1981 album ‘My Life in the Bush of Ghosts’ as a new model for electronic music, Nirvana and the widespread birth of grunge rock, or Sublime’s genre-bending combination of punk, ska, reggae, and rock. Okay, these may not exactly fit the definition of paradigm shifts (perhaps the rock and roll or Jimi examples are better analogies) but the general idea is that pop music is popular because it conforms to our expectations until someone comes along and throws those expectations out the window in a new way that changes all the rules.

Next week I’ll be covering the Rothbury Festival in western Michigan, but I’ll try to get a little post up on Friday, and hopefully something that’s relevant to the festival season.

MOTB Festival(s) of the Week:

The Return of MONEYPENNY

MCB's longtime contributor MoneyPenny was recently involved in a rock em sock em crash em up derby car accident that has put her on the back burner so to speak but she is returning in full flavor and should be 200% in no time flat...

But as the old man once said...

"I'm not dead yet!"

So here's a few bits and pieces from Miss MoneyPenny

as I dodge the glue factory one more time...

Picked up Spinnerette on Tuesday and it's fucking insane good.

Dance in the car, sing out loud and don't care who notices good.
Brody works with proven geniuses and has the brass to pull it off. Just in time for summer, she has gifted us with several new anthems to drive angry to. Ghetto Love is the hit, Sex Bomb is my personal favorite. If this don't make your booty move: you suck. Brody: if that's really your ass on the back cover, then hat's off to you, lady.
Whenever these guys hit town I want to love their faces off.

I'm still struggling a bit after my mashup on Crooks road.
Dear Drivers Everywhere:
HANG UP THE FUCKING PHONE AND PAY ATTENTION!
My neck is slowly healing, but I am dying to be myself again before I have an identity crisis. I'm feeling rather old. I caught myself pseudo-dancing to the spazz jazz that they play on the Weather Channel during "your local on the 8's" recently.
It is time to check myself, as I am currently wrecking myself.

As I cannot do much more than sit, I take pictures from wherever I rest.
Oddly, even though I'm not very mobile;
life is just as intersting if I look hard enough.

It was great to get out last Friday at the Showtime 20th party. I took a few pictures of MCB folks, but in my pill induced haze I really only took a few shots. Great people at that place though, I see Brett Michaels is the new fashion guru of the masses.

I saw more guyliner w/ cowboy hats than I ever did in the 80's.

It was a good crowd and good times.

As if losing Farrah and Ed wasn't enough, MJ went and stole their thunder like a MF. Wings gave up the cup, Kate plus 9 is over, Iran can't use Twitter, and Korea maybe wants to blow us off the map. Not to make light of any of these subjects, but I think we all need some cheering up.

Here is a brand new unrelease MP3

from a new band called The Lost Fingers

More on The Lost Fingers coming soon…

Since pot is still illegal,

what's better than panties for a pick-me-up?

I have a friend in Switzerland that makes super-sexay panties.

He is called the "Pantichrist"

and will deliver us from boring.

I was the very first US customer, and I am happy to say that his work is fantastic. Each pair has his original pop-art hand -applied, so no two pairs are exactly alike. Strangely, for such fancy pants, they are still relatively affordable. Every girl needs to fire her lame-o cotton florals for a sassy new pair of these.

Get you some, and tell 'em MCB's MoneyPenny sent cha.

Just using what's left of the old noggin to come up with ideas.

You know, gotta fill my brainspace with something.

The helljob is mind-numbing.

Wishing you all a fantastic weekend!

Cheers,
Moneypenny

Sun 6/28 -- WOODMAN @ The Factory Rochester

Catch WOODMAN this Sunday night over at the Factory in Rochester

Like the Osmonds, The Trachtenburg Family Slideshow Players, the Jackson 5, Kings of Leon, The Shaggs, The Muldoons, The Carter Family and The Brady Bunch, Woodman believe that making music can be a family affair. Frank Woodman, songwriter, singer, and rhythm guitar, 19 year old son Derek Woodman on tremolo soaked lead guitar and 17 year old daughter Hillary Woodman with haunting vocals, are Woodman. Registered Nurse and aspiring songwriter, unable to get a band together due to afternoon shift restrictions, recruits his young ones to flesh out his plaintive songs. The experiment worked, with the Woodman voices melding together for some sweet Americana. Songs about childhood joys, lost innocence and stolen car rides, show their love for the American folk song.

Have your music featured in Michigan made Film!!!

Michigan -Made Feature Film offers local bands & musicians a chance to compete for inclusion in the film’s soundtrack-
Submissions now through July 20th.

The producers for the Michigan-made feature film, Annabelle & Bear, are pleased to announce an exciting opportunity for Michigan bands and musicians, to compete for a chance to be featured on the film's soundtrack, with one lucky band or musician winning a cameo in the film.

Written and directed by Amy Weber, Annabelle & Bear will be shot locally and around the state of Michigan. But what really makes this production stand out from all other films being shot here is this: Annabelle & Bear will have a 100% Michigan cast and crew. So it’s only fitting that the soundtrack features Michigan talent as well.

The producers are only looking for original music that is owned exclusively by the band or Musician for this competition. Please do not submit music or songs that you
do not have exclusive ownership of. Send us anything and everything you
have that fits the emotional tone of the film.

The producers are looking for original local Rock compositions to use in the soundtrack. Stylistically, the prospective music should be in a Classic Rock vein- (ie: Seger, Springsteen, Clapton, Steve Miller Band) ranging from ballads to full out jams, lyrical AND instrumental. The prospective submissions can be melancholic, tying lyrically to the film’s emotional arcs, such as a disconnected and lost soul, a wounded spirit, an innocent love, love that heals, believing in someone, being saved by love. While not having to be specifically written about the narrative, the overall feeling of the song should be emotional.

The producers are also looking for a single thematic piece of music to use throughout the movie. We would like simple, emotional acoustic melodies (ie: Brokeback Mountain) that we could build on during transitions and montages, as well as original songs that help capture the film's story of love and redemption.

Visit http://www.annabelleandbear.com/ and click on MUSIC to read more about the rules of competition and to submit songs and music.

Selected pieces will be posted on the http://www.annabelleandbear.com/ website for
visitors to vote for their favorite piece of music. All songs will be selected by the producers for the soundtrack, and one lucky band or musician with the most votes, will win a cameo in the movie.

Competition begins on Wednesday, June 24th, 2009, (10:00am) and ends Monday, July 20th, 2009. (6:00pm)

The producers are excited to spotlight the musical talent, from here in Michigan and encourages everyone to submit your best.

The Story:
Annabelle & Bear is the dramatic, tender story of a man who suddenly finds himself thrust into fatherhood, and the unexpected journey that leads him to discover the life-altering love found in the heart of his little girl.

Wed 6/24 -- Miss Derringer @ Pike Room Crofoot Pontiac

Head on over to The Pike Room this Wednesday to check out Miss Derringer
Conceived at the halfway point where conventional rock merges with conceptual art, the band muses on its namesake fictional character – a woman who is always on the wrong side of love and the law… by the name of “Miss Derringer.”

Inspired by the dusty vocals of ‘50s crooners and ‘60s girl groups like The Ronettes, Miss Derringer has a uniquely pop-melancholy sound that never ceases to explore how love can do you wrong. Their unique style and sound has earned considerable praise from the press with cover features in L.A. Weekly and Los Angeles City Beat (where Liz was voted "2008 Artist of the Year"). Pitchfork says Miss Derringer has, “the poise of a theater diva, the presence of a method actress, and the voice of a vamp surfer girl.”
She opens for Girl in a Coma

Wed 6/24 -- Danny Kroha - Elizabeth Butters - Lager House Detroit

PJ's Lager House
1254 Michigan Ave
Corktown - Detroit
313.961.4668
www.myspace.com/lagerhouse

Wednesday, June 24
Danny Kroha
w/Elizabeth Butters
Dooley Wilson
John Roundcity
The Kitchenettes
10pm

This will be an intimate and very special evening that many people have been looking forward to for quite some time! Elizabeth Butters is in from Boston, and perhaps another decade, as well. She has an encyclopedic knowledge of folk music and this translates straight into her stage performance which is marked by her uniquely charming voice and dulcimer skills. Elizabeth says she was born in the wrong era and suffers from nostalgia and false sympathies with the past. She identifies with the thirties, the highways and open roads, the Dust Bowl, and Bonnie & Clyde. She only makes it out to Detroit once or twice a year, so be sure not to miss her this time around. The buzz that followed her home to New England following her performance at the Lager House last October has carried all the way into June. In a city that brims over with musicians and "the next big thing," you know she must truly be something special to have remained in mind all this time.
Accompanying Ms. Butters on some songs will be The Readies' own Danny Kroha on diddly-bow, guitar and aged banjo. Danny will also be playing a solo set of his own bluesy material in his last solo show before heading out on tour with the legendary Gories.
Toledo's prodigal son and Best Blues Act (as voted by the readers of the 2009 Toledo City Paper) Dooley Wilson and his esteemed compatriot Mr. John Roundcity, will accompany Elizabeth on some other tunes with slide guitar and harmonica, respectively. Dooley and John will be playing their own songs, as well. Wilson is quite possibly the best blues slide guitarist north of the Mason-Dixon line and John is no slouch either! Obscure 1930s and 40s blues songs combine with originals for one of the best set lists around. The Kitchenettes are a new collaboration between Kara and local songstress Audra Kubat.

Sat 6/27 -- “Marketing” Art Opening at RIC

David Flaugher
“Marketing”
June 27-July 25

ORG Contemporary
1610 Clay, Detroit MI (RIC building 2, third floor)
OPENING RECEPTION: Saturday June 27th 2009

David Flaugher describes himself as a critical skeptic who feels most comfortable communicating through material plays and arrangements. His incredibly flat works exhibit an acute balance of carefully selected objects, lines, brush strokes and constructions. At first sight each work sings out in its material glory, solidified in that which is physically real as we understand it. Paintings seem unfinished and consequently fail in convincing the viewer of any illusionistic effect. Purposefully left hangnails hold together a table fit for sitting, albeit realistically could never function properly as furniture. Drawings sit atop said table with paper just dirty enough to suggest casual neglect for Flaugher’s own work, when in fact this is miles from the truth.

The tiniest aspects of each work have not gone without consideration. There exists such a delicate balance and consistency in the use of each substance that one becomes convinced of the artists bond to his craft. The unpolished look of each piece intentionally focuses our attention on its material nature.

While the conceptual drive of David’s work suggests deep cognitive investigation, the physicality of the items creates restraint against full-fledged meditative consideration. A constant tug of war takes place between the flatness of the observed and the metaphysical realms they seem to suggest. The result of this play on perception is an experience left up for debate. Though each piece is clearly the bi-product of a path paved through restricted practice, the end result is an open field of thoughts left to be contemplated.

WHEAT RELEASES WHITE INK, BLACK INK
ON JULY 21 (The Rebel Group)

!!DOWNLOAD!!
"H.O.T.T." from White Ink, Black Ink

"Wheat finds the not-so-still point between pop melody and slanted ambience. Dig out your headphones, dredge up your deepest, darkest feelings, and go there." - Boston Globe

"Wheat's debut, "Medeiros" was without doubt one of 1998's neglected classics; a subtly bittersweet gem." - MOJO

With a handful of critically-acclaimed albums in tow, Tauton, MA duo Wheat is proud to bring their new album, White Ink, Black Ink to the masses on July 21st (The Rebel Group). "White Ink, Black Ink was the quickest, most fun record we've ever made,” says Brendan Harney (drums, keys). “We wanted to focus on keeping the simple human sentiment as pure as possible.”

Wheat first entered the scene with their 1998 debut, Medeiros, produced by Brian Deck (pre-Modest Mouse and Iron & Wine). The follow up, Hope and Adams, secured the band's place in indie rock history with its "melodic poise and impressive ache" (so says a little magazine called Rolling Stone). The expansive Dave Friddman (Flaming Lips, Mercury Rev) produced album made numerous year-end lists and remains heralded by the underground scene.

In 2003, Wheat released Per Second, Per Second, Per Second...Every Second on Aware/Columbia. The album's single, "I Met A Girl," was a minor radio hit and Wheat toured more than ever before, but the album failed to connect enough to keep both Columbia and the band's interest. Three years later, after a short period of reflection, they quietly released Everyday I Said a Prayer for Kathy and Made a One Inch Square (2006). The duo avoided the spotlight for the past few years, save with the limited edition re-issue of their first two classic records, Medeiros and Hope and Adams earlier this year. The re-issues peaked interest from fans both old and new - an audience hungry for more from the group.

White Ink, Black Ink is Wheat's most straightforward, heavy-hitting indie rock album to date. It looks at life's ups and downs and how to cope with everything, creating songs both for the listener and for themselves. “Now, even the live show is much more about the clarity and sincerity of the communication,” says Harney. "The new songs have a much bigger than us sort of feel," adds Levesque. "In February 2008 my Dad died. It was my first real meeting with that kind of physical absolute. Most of us are a sum of our total, not a total of our some. It's not really who we were, but how and by whom we are survived." White Ink, Black Ink is Wheat exploring the very rudiments of life and human existence, creating music that serves as a connection between themselves and their fans.

Wild at Heart - Tuesday June 23rd 2009

Hey Amy
What are the GGBB doing this weekend?
- Bill

Wild
Bill Ketelhut provides the "blog" to this anti-blog
He has a radio program on WXOU out of Oakland University

Wild At Heart

The Boomtown Rats are coming to mind today
as I don't want to think about Monday.

Had a tough weekend finding out one of the few jobs I was counting on to keep me in the area fell through as the manager was told he can't hire any external help for a couple of months which does me no good having a July 31st deadline. Of course, if an office is short staffed, how can one hire internally to meet that demand? I am still waiting to hear from some other prospects but another week has gone by and my gut is telling me that I might be moving back to Rochester, NY after next month. part of me is thinking of everything I will be missing including my radio show, all the organizations that I have built relationships with in the area and all my friends. I am not sure I can put up with moving back to an area where I'll be living at home with my parents again and living the type of life I want despite how much I love them and miss being near them. I keep my fingers crossed I'll be here in Detroit in August, but I'm not sure that will happen.

In the meantime, let's start with something fun! That being the release of the new Harold Ramis film "Year One" starring Jack Black and Michael Cera who play Zed the hunter and Oh the gatherer. Things aren't going well for them in their village when Zed eats the forbidden fruit from The Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil and becomes banished from the tribe. Oh decides to go with him on a journey past the mountains (the fabled end of the world) where they encounter Cain and Abel (David Cross and Paul Rudd) and Abraham (Hank Azaria). In their journey, Zed and Oh also notice the girls from their former tribe they wanted to "lay with" (Maya and Eema) have been enslaved and they head to Sodom to save them. The movie offers some funny moments courtesy of Cera but others seem to fall almost flat (i.e. - Oliver Platt as the High Priest as he tries to make moves on Oh or Azaria's Abraham as he explains why being circumsized is a good idea). This movie tends to feel more like the Life Of Brian with flashes of Stripes or Caddyshack which tends to make the film seem uneven at times. While not a smash success, there are enough funny moments to make this a film that is a good distraction from real life and will get a grade of B- from this critic.

I managed to get down to River Days once this year which capped an iffy weekend by being such a wonderful day outside, esp for a Father's Day. I always enjoy the Tall Ships when they are in port and I enjoyed Animal Magic, a great show by Mark Rosenthal as he shows off his collection of animals including a 25 ft python, a huge sloth which takes a peanut from his mouth and a cute little disappearing hedgehog. I also met my new friends David & Bianca who I met at the Red Bull Air Race and posed for some pictures down at Hart Plaza. They are from Germany and doing a special project about Detroit for their photography classes. It is just an honor being asked to pose and represnt Detroit, esp at a time when I find myself secretly saying goodbyes. At least, I know I have a place to stay whenever I go to Germany which is where my family is from. Well, the actual town is in what is currently Poland due to the moving of the border after the war but it is still Germany which to which I owe my history.

This weekend, sees a couple of fun festivals going on and let's start with Midsummer Nights In Midtown which has replaced the Detroit Festival of the Arts this year. On Thursday the 25th you can go to Wayne State to see the documentary "A Great Day In Harlem". The Academy Award nominated documentary tells the story behind the legendary August 1958 photograph of 57 of the world’s greatest jazz stars who snapped a picture that day that would live forever. Afterwards, you can listen to the sounds of the WSU Detroit Jazz Collective and Bad Plus which offers a mix of jazz and rock.

On Friday, the place to be is MOCAD which will have performances by LEMUR (League of Electronic Musical Urban Robots) and will perform with human beatboxer and vocal performance artist, Adam Matta.

It should be a fun experience to music lovers and they will be followed by the 10-piece Balkan brass band from NYC called Slavic Soul Party who deliver some very danceable music which combines Gypsy, East European, Mexican and Asian jazz and soul styles. Things end Saturday with the Canfield Street Party featuring The Lovell Sisters American roots music and the Hip Hop stylings of the Orishas. You can go to www.midsummernightsinmidtown.com for more information.

That being said, don't forget about the Star and Stripes Festival in downtown Mount Clemons which runs from Friday through Sunday. This festival has a great line up of talent and a lot of events for the whole family. National acts include the fun Morris Day & the Time on Friday, local rocker Uncle Kracker along with Saliva and Edgar Winter on Saturday and an edgy line up of Rock-N-Roll on Sunday with Ratt, LA Guns, King's X, Night Ranger and Dokken. This is one festival that seems stronger this year than last.

For history buffs, the Bath City Heritage Area will showcase the period from 1890 to 1950 when Mount Clemens was the mineral bath capital of America and highlight its role in the development of Macomb County and will include a vintage fashion show among other events. Fireworks will be on Friday @ 10PM. For those who like tribute bands you can also check out Heartbreaker (Led Zeppelin) on Friday, Echoes of Pink Floyd on Saturday and Zooropa (U2) and Beatlemania on Sunday.

Other local bands of note include the Muggs, Polish Muslims, School Of Rock and Green Street. You can go to www.starsandstripesfest.com for complete line ups.

With all the festivals, it is hard to imagine that there are more wonderful events going on this week starting with Wednesday (6/24) night as you can go see punk rockers Rancid with Rise Against @ Fillmore, classic rock groups Chicago and Earth, Wind & Fire @ Pine Knob (DTE), local favs The Decks @ the Blind Pig, Ha Ha Tonka with Sik Sik Nation @ Small's or rockers Girl In A Coma @ Pike Room (they are on Joan Jett's label so they must rock) plus you get to check out Miss Derringer who kills.

On Thursday (6/25), legendary punk rock group the Germs will be playing @ the Magic Stick while Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings play @ the Power Center in Ann Arbor and one of my favorite bands, The Church plays @ the Magic Bag. Friday (6/26) has Melissa Etheridge @ Motor City Casino, Leon Russell @ the Magic Bag, Citizen Smile with The Setup @ Pike Room, The Sea & Cake @ The Blind Pig and My Dear Disco @ Ingalls Mall in Ann Arbor.

For Saturday (6/27), I might recommend getting your 80's new wave on with the Regeneration Tour @ Meadowbrook with ABC, Cutting Crew, Heaven 17 and Wang Chung or the Fray with Jack's Mannequin @ Pine Knob or your blues/boogie woogie with Dr John @ the Magic Bag Saturday is also good for local Detroit rocking with the Gories and the Oblivians @ Majestic Theatre, Broadzilla @ the Elbow Room, the Amino Acids @ Northern Lights Lounge and Misty Lyn and the Big Beautiful @ Jacoby's.

Sunday is for new punk with the Offspring and Dropkick Murphy's @ Freedom Hill or rap/reggae with Rock The Bells @ Pine Knob with Common, Busta Rhymes, the Roots, Nas and Damien Marley.

Next Monday sees classic rock chicks Heart @ Pine Knob and legends Sonic Youth @ Royal oak Music Theatre. I hope I didn't leave anybody out.

Also, this weekend for film fans see the return of DWIFF (Detroit Windsor International Film Festival) to Wayne State starting June 25th with the movie "Street Boss" which is based on a true story from the book "With Honor and Purpose" by FBI agent Phil Kerby on his quest to bring down one of Detroit's most notorious mobsters, Tony Jack. Other movies that I am looking forward to include "The Rain" starring the late David Carradine in this epic tale of terror that follows three generations and one timeless curse set in the remote farming community of Perseverance and "Tales from the Catholic Church of Elvis!" about a Catholic schoolgirl growing up in Sin City, Las Vegas. Go to www.dwiff.org for more info and full schedules.

Lastly, I was disappointed to hear Bill Lambier stepped down as head coach and general manager of the Detroit Shock. Bill has lead the Shock to four Finals appearances with three titles to show for it. Having covered three finals for the Shock these last three years, I wanted to say I was surprised by at the press conferences last year, Bill admitted he felt he was standing in the way of Rick Mahorn (who has been promoted to head coach) and Cheryl Reeve (who has been promoted to assistant coach/general manager). I am surprised it happened during the season and not before but I hope Bill finds success at his next project which will hopefully be as head coach of an NBA team which I think he would excell at. People say that coaching the two genders is different, but Bill brought NBA style of play to the WNBA and has dealt with some real divergent personalities which should have gotten him prepared for their male counterparts. I feel the shock will miss lambier but mahorn is a good replacement. The next Shock home game is Sunday, June 28th when they take on the Monarchs. Part of the ticket proceeds go to the American Heart Association. The Shock are currently 3-5 on the season.

I have a feeling I am missing something but with such a busy week, that would not be surprising. have a safe week and I'll catch you next Monday.

This weekend in Art with PCCA

Mold Made
June 26 – August 1, 2009
Opening Reception Friday, June 26, 6pm – 9pm
Hands-on Casting Workshop, Saturday, June 27, 12pm

Paint Creek Center for the Arts is excited to present Mold Made, a group show of sculptures made using various casting processes. The show was co-curated by Norwood Viviano, Assistant Professor of Art at Grand Valley State University in Allendale, Michigan, and PCCA’s Exhibition Committee. Participating artists include: Jeremy Brooks, Lansing, Michigan; Todd Erickson, Farmington Hills, Michigan; Hank Murta Adams, Troy, New York; Daniel Petraitis, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Sharon Que, Ann Arbor, Michigan; Benjamin Teague, Birmingham, Michigan; Elona Van Gent, Ann Arbor, Michigan; Graem Whyte, Hamtramck, Michigan; Blake Williams, Lansing, Michigan; Lauren Youngling, West Bloomfield, Michigan; and Renee Zettle-Sterling, Allendale, Michigan.

Sculptors have used mold-making and casting processes for centuries to create objects in a variety of materials. While a mold can be used to make faithful copies of an original, the process is much more than a method for reproducing multiple objects. In the words of Blake Jamison Williams, “An object made from a mold can be considered a trace of the initial form. I use mold-making processes and their associated materials because the physical act of creating becomes a metaphor for the act of remembering.”

Mold Made features contemporary works made using traditional techniques. Works in the show include bronze sculptures made by Todd Erickson and Elona Van Gent, using the lost wax process; an installation made up of hundreds of small elements made by Blake Jamison Williams; cast-resin objects by Daniel Petraitis and Lauren Yougnling; a minimal installation by Jeremy Brooks; a cast glass sculpture by Hank Murta Adams; and many other works.

In conjunction with this show PCCA will host a hands-on casting work for visitors of all ages, conducted by participating artists. We’ll explore some simple casting techniques to learn what is involved in making molds and using them to create multiple objects. Children as young as 4 years old are welcome, as long as they are accompanied by parents. Older children, teens and adults will find this workshop enjoyable as well.

PCCA will host an opening reception to honor the artists, on Friday, June 26th from 7:00 – 9:00 pm. Join us again on Saturday, June 27th at 12:00 pm for the hands-on workshop.
The opening reception and workshop
are free and open to the public.

Ian Weber
Constructed Realities

June 26 – August 1, 2009
Opening Reception
Friday June 24th 6pm– 9pm

Paint Creek Center for the Arts is excited to turn over our First Floor Gallery to Constructed Realities, a solo show of photographs by Ian Weber. Ian graduated from Adrian College in 2008, where he concentrated primarily on photography and electronic art.
He has exhibited his work in student shows at Adrian.
This show at PCCA is the first solo exhibit of his work.

Weber’s photographs are simple, playful explorations of toy animals placed in unusual contexts. He plays with scale and environment to create new realities. The photos were set up in an old barn full of objects and in the landscape of a family farm. While the images are not digitally manipulated, the settings become fantastic through juxtapositions of toys among old objects. Spark plugs in an old engine block become jungle vegetation, habitat for prowling big cats. A rusted license plate forms the back drop for what could be a museum diorama featuring a gazelle.
Through shifts in scale and viewpoint, the photographer
has created entire worlds inhabited by wild beasts.

The artist says of his work, “A photograph can appear to be very simple, usually viewed as a distinct moment captured in time, but upon further examination many hidden aspects become apparent. Photographs are a manipulation of the natural world where lighting, composition and realism can be abstracted and distorted to create an artistic portrait. Subtle appearances stand out, the composition gets more interesting and it becomes its own unique image.”

This show runs in conjunction with Mold Made in our Main Gallery. Both shows will open with a reception on Friday, June 26th from 7:00 – 9:00 pm.

The reception is free and open to the public.

Check out the boys from The Offspring, currently on their US tour, at Freedom Hill this Sunday. MCB photographer Gene Schilling will be there to capture the show, so check back early next week for the photo set. More info on The Offspring...

Biography
The Offspring's metal-inflected punk became a popular sensation in 1994, selling over four million albums on an independent record label. While the group's credentials and approach follow the indie rock tradition of the '80s, sonically the Offspring sound more like an edgy, hard-driving heavy metal band, with their precise, pulsing power chords and Dexter Holland's flat vocals. Featuring Holland, guitarist Kevin "Noodles" Wasserman, bassist Greg Kriesel, and drummer Ron Welty, the Offspring released their self-titled debut album in 1989...

Fri 6/26 -- Bull Halsey @ Lager House Detroit

Saturday, June 27
Bull Halsey CD Release
w/Dirt Road Logic, The Matt Bastardsons
10pm

Bull Halsey celebrates their first full length release tonight at PJ's Lager House!
The album is entitled "Hot Dry Work" and is coming out on Deluxe Records. Of Bull Halsey, Matt Mertha of The Red Butlers says: "One listen to Bull Halsey throws the rock-n-roll mind into reverse, to a time when young British kids like The Yardbirds, The Animals, and John Mayall's Bluesbreakers were teaching other Brits (and Americans) how much the Delta blues had an impact on rock music.
This isn't today's disposable garage-rock re-hash, this is a textbook from Music Appreciation, and class is in session." "Hot Dry Work" was recorded at the famous Tempermill Studios in Ferndale.
Dirt Road Logic is a locally based roots rock quartet playing out gritty and passionate tales of the Rust Belt. They arrive with their second release, "The Rock-N-Roll EP" in tow. The Music Revue says, "This is some good old straight-ahead, no B.S. rock 'n' roll. The vocals are a perfect fit, and the words don't get lost; nothing is overpowered. It's like listening to 'instant' classic rock."

PHOTOS: Country Bob & The Blood Farmers // Hell's Belles Burlesque by LAWRENCEcreative

MCB's Brett Lawrence (LAWRENCEcreative) was eastside last weekend for a nice country music show featuring some of dietroit's nicest southern belles

Here is what he had to say:

A night of music, burlesque and debauchery!
Featuring: Gravetown, Country Bob and The Bloodfarmers, They Never Sleep.
Special Guests: Hell's Belle'sThe Ritz in Warren
Saturday, June 20, 2009
Shot for www.MOTORCITYBLOG.net

In attending The Good, The Bad and The Ugly Show at The Ritz in Warren on Saturday, featuring Gravetown, Country Bob and The Bloodfarmers and They Never Sleep, I have come to a very important realization in my young life...Burlesque makes everything better.

No matter the décor of the bar, the type of music playing, the beer on tap, or the crap attitude the waitress with a sick 4 month old at home (I totally can’t blame her) may be giving you, the beer seems a little colder, the music better and the waitresses nicer with confident and sexy women strutting their stuff on stage in a timeless display of naughtiness and tease.

Hell’s Belle’s, albeit not The Pussycat Dolls by any stretch of the imagination, is definitely an enjoyable show and should be watched out for future gigs.

Oh yeah, the bands we pretty good, too

BRENDAN BENSON
My Old, Familiar Friend
(ATO Records; August 18th 2009)
Brendan Benson returns with his fourth solo album,
My Old, Familiar Friend
slated for release on ATO Records for August 18 2009.

Taking a break from writing, recording and touring with the Grammy winning Raconteurs, Benson went into the studio in Nashville and London with producer, Gil Norton (Pixies, Maximo Park, Foo Fighters) and mixer Dave Sardy (The Rolling Stones, LCD Soundsystem, Oasis). The result is a timeless, 11-track album.

My Old, Familiar Friend is a marriage of passion and perfectionism and an illustration of all that is special about Brendan Benson. From the seductive glimmer of “Feel Like Taking You Home” to the Motown swoon of “Garbage Day” Benson has shaped his restless-hearted stories into songs that fit together with exquisite neatness. Benson’s musical approach is detailed, craftsman-like and fastidious. Take for instance “A Whole Lot Better,” the first US single, in which harmonies, hand-claps and guitar are layered to produce a work of heart-felt buoyancy- a work that culminates in the sweet, dove-tailing swoop of its refrain: “I fell in love with you/ And out of love with you/ And back in love with you/ All in the same day.” The album is comprised of songs that arrive perfectly formed and immaculate, the sound of a classic singer/songwriter operating at the top of his game.

It is a style he has honed, of course. On 1996’s One Mississippi, the songs came rough-hewn but charged with hooks and with wit; 2002’s Lapalco brought a perfect pop ripeness, and by The Alternative to Love in 2005, there was something quite brilliant and burnished about his songwriting. Along the way he has co-written and recorded two spectacular albums with The Raconteurs, Broken Boy Soldiers and Consolers of the Lonely. For Benson, The Raconteurs was not just an opportunity to play with close friends Jack White (The White Stripes) Jack Lawrence and Patrick Keeler (The Greenhornes) but also a chance to roll around in the rock, psychedelia and blues that has shaped his musical taste.

Through all of Brendan Benson’s songs ribbons a delight in melody. With an undeniably distinctive voice, a knack for writing a timeless tune and a sweet, effortless delivery, Brendan proves to be a singular voice in music today. Watch this space for US summer tour dates.

My Old, Familiar Friend track listing:

1. A Whole Lot Better
2. Eyes on The Horizon
3. Garbage Day
4. Gonowhere
5. FEEL LIKE TAKING YOU HOME
6. You Make a Fool Out of Me
7. Poised and Ready
8. Don’t Want To Talk
9. Misery
10. Lesson Learned
11. Borrow

Good Girls Being Bad: And?

Good Girls Being Bad

The GGBB were on citizen patrol this week. We chased down not one but three douche bags on cell phones while driving, two of them really almost hit me. To the point where our bumpers almost be came lovers. Don’t talk and drive if you can’t talk and drive. Last Saturday some petty car thief came up and tried to sell me some CD’s. They were some poor guys burned CDs. All I can think about is if that jerk broke into my car and tried to sell me my stuff I would GIVER’ on his ass! I told him too, while RebccaMich and Johnny Random tried to hold me back. He’s lucky they were there since I would have enjoyed going back to douche bag jail and getting another tattoo.

The someone who is obviously new said “Aren’t you just writing about what you do?” Hey Genius don’t join Mensa yet. Of course we are telling you about our kick ass lives. Your lucky to fucking read this. Here is why: Friday night I was at Music Hall for their Cars and Stars. I got to meet and hang out with Savion Glover. If you don’t know who he is google him and then be in awe of me. It was a fantastic performance and I will share my photos on this AMAZING blog later.

Saturday had us waist deep in Detroit Royalty at Small’s. We were lucky enough to catch a killer performance from TH3YN3V3RSL33P (They Never Sleep). As a matter of fact these GGBB were nice enough to get an Autographed CD for you to win, just email us at GoodGirls_BeingBad@yahoo.com (Be the 13th emailer to win). It was a great girl night as we were Being Bad in the bathroom with Queen Bee herself, Jill from Punk Fitness and Lisa (The Ninja) from Noir. After dancing our asses off we headed over to Johnny Random’s house for a little 70’s porn and Isis.

Sunday we were at the Royal Oak Glass and Clay show to listen to the funky sounds of Light in August. Seriously check them out before they get too big for Detroit. It was nice to reconnect with the family and some friends. Monday had me at St. Andrews covering Sebastian Granger and Metric. Cool cool show and I ran into my good friend Jankowski who is probably their biggest fan.

Tuesday was another night in Tokyo and we had photo shoot with the VERY luck Shane Glenn. La brought Pink Champagne and Raspberries she and Blon D helped with hair, make up and direction. As you know Founders Fest is this weekend. We are about to go eat some Breakfast Stout, hang with a Dirty Bastard and cause some Double Trouble. Here are some fab photos from Tuesday. And remember, Beer Fests are for BEER and NOT for boys!

Wednesday had RebeccaMich at the Crofoot for AA Bondy and she was back on Thursday to cover Paul van Dyk. Check out her photos here on MCB. Thursday was more girl power drinks and dinner for me. Last night’s thunder storm had our house shaking and causing stuff to fall off the wall. My bed moved, that’s the most action I’ve had all month. Thank God for thunder and lighting or my bits might grow over.

Sorry for the delay in the post folks, I got some kid in trouble yesterday and had to talk his parents out of grounding him. I mean who grounds a 2 year old???

Since you might not be able to make it to Founder’s so here are two great show’s for you to see:

5th ANNUAL HOT BLUES AND BBQ - JUNE 19-20, 2009

5th ANNUAL HOT BLUES AND BBQ TO BE HELD JUNE 19-20, 2009

Hot Blues and BBQ, the Village of Oxford, the Oxford Downtown Development Authority, and the Detroit Blues Society are proud to announce that the 5th annual HOT BLUES AND BBQ will be held June 19-20, 2009. The Friday, June 19th event will be held from 7pm-10pm in Centennial Park in Downtown Oxford, MI. The Saturday June 20th event will be held from 12pm to 12am, in beautiful Scripter Park, in the Village of Oxford, Michigan.

The festival has returned to it’s 2-day format after several years of tinkering with several different combinations. According to festival producer, Steve Allen, two days are the best-suited timeframe for maximum exposure for both the Village of Oxford and Blues music in general. The single largest change this year is the fact that all events on both days are absolutely free of charge for admission. This is being done due the poor state of the Michigan economy and to allow families a weekend of fun without the worries of money.

This year’s event is actually 3 events starting with the kickoff concert on Friday evening, followed by Detroit Blues Challenge starting at noon on Saturday, and the core festival beginning at 4pm on Saturday.

THE FRIDAY JUNE 19th KICKOFF EVENT
• MOJO PHOENIX (6:00pm)
• FRONT STREET BLUES BAND (7:00pm)
• TOMAS ESPARZA and the BOA CONSTRICTORS (8:00pm)
• JOSH BOYD AND THE VIP BAND wsg/ MARK “PAZ” PASMAN FROM WCSX (9pm)

THE SATURDAY JUNE 20th EVENT

• DAVID GERALD AND INSURRECTION (12:30pm)
• MOTOR HONEY (1:00pm)
• THE FLYING LATINI BROTHERS (1:30pm)

Music on the Brain - by MCB's Andrew Bender

Music on the Brain

MOTB 6-19
Enjoyment and expectation.

Welcome to another weekly edition of MOTB, which I hope is as informative as it is a useful vehicle for procrastination from some other far more unexciting activity. To day, let’s engage in a brief exercise: First, think of one of your favorite albums – one you know well and could listen to anytime and sing along with or anticipate a large proportion of the songs. Now think of the very first time you heard that album and compare that in your mind to what you grew to love.
How different were the experiences from the first to the last?
I’m guessing that they’re probably pretty different. Often, I have to listen to an album once or twice, set it aside for a week or a month, and come back to it. When I do listen to it again, I often have a much different appreciation for it than I did the first time. This seems to be a function of what’s called the mere exposure effect or the familiarity effect – we prefer what we know. I think this phenomenon underlies the tendency of many people to only eat the food they know they like and only listen to the music they know they like. Our expectations are secure this way and it’s far easier cognitively not to have to think about it.

Behind a great deal of cognitive functioning surrounding music, both in terms of performance and listening, is the idea of expectation. Musicians playing together have expectations of one another, and audience members have all sorts of expectations of the performers they’ve come to see and hear. One area of cognitive neuroscience uses the brain’s electrical activity as a means by which to understand how our brains allocate resources to cognitive functions like attention. So how do we measure this?
If we put electrodes on a person’s scalp as shown here it’s possible to measure the brain’s electrical response to external stimuli like sounds, or to internal processes like memory. If someone is presented with several uniform tones that are the same in pitch and intensity, (beep, beep, beep) followed by what’s often called an oddball tone or stimulus (BOOP) – one that’s different from those that preceded it, this oddball or deviant sound will elicit the brain’s ‘AH-HA’ response where suddenly we recognize that it’s different than the previous tones. And no, I’m not talking about that ‘80s Norwegian pop group Ah-ha with the cool cartoon-world-meets-real-world video – which cooincidentally was also my first concert (yes, I’m just that lame).

How this works in a (hopefully) easy to understand explanation:
Let’s say that every time a person hears the oddball ‘BOOP’ tone, we record the brain’s electrical activity from the start of each tone for a couple of seconds. This gives us a wave with several peaks and valleys representing the summed electrical activity from the brain as it fluctuates up and down over time. If we do that over and over, (beep, beep, beep, BOOP over and over,) but never in the same order, so you can never anticipate it exactly we can then average this wave over dozens or even hundreds of trials.
The result is what’s called an ‘event-related potential,’ or ERP for short. The ERP is a waveform with several different characteristic positive and negative peaks, each of which signifies a neurocognitive or perceptual process. In cases of these types of tasks, the third peak is called the P3 and we now know that the P3 component signifies our cognitive awareness of the difference between the tones In other words, the P3 signifies that ‘Ah-Ha!’ and we know it’s very sensitive to things like disease, effects of drugs, aging, and various other factors. By measuring how long it takes for the P3 component to occur after the tone is played, or the height or amplitude of the peak, we can make all sorts of comparisons between groups of people or conditions – children vs. adults, healthy aged individuals vs. those with Alzheimer’s disease, effects of stress or drugs vs. control condition.

What’s the point of this to MOTB?
Well, researchers have used this to test all sorts of factors to better understand how musicians differ from non-musicians, and have found that musicians’ brains respond differently and more sensitively to sound. In fact, several studies have looked at these questions as they concern expectations. Studies have shown that musicians’ brains were more sensitive to violations of the expectations than non-musicians. For musicians playing with one another, violating expectations can be either very positive, such as ‘wow, he played triplets on that solo – he’s never done that before’ or negative, ‘WTF?!’ However, I’m also very curious about fans’ expectations of musicians. Those expecting to hear a song played pretty much as it sounds on an album, small violations of expectations may be very welcome. Conversely, it can also sound like crap, or just plain wrong. I’ve seen my share of bands whose live performances paled in comparison to their studio albums. By the same token

I like to think that I’m open minded and can find something to like in any song. Unfortunately, I think that’s really a load. For all of the music I love, or at least am familiar with, I dislike more than I find really enjoyable. I’m really not a fan of scream rock, a lot of country, most polka, or Kenny G. I appreciate, but rarely listen to classical music, gospel, and a lot of world music. But even sometimes, I’m just really not sure what to make of a band or an album.
Such are my feelings toward the Dead Weather, the new supergroup featuring Jack White (White Stripes, Raconteurs), Allison Mosshart (the Kills), Dean Fertita (Queens of the Stone Age) and Jack Lawrence (Raconteurs). I saw them play a surprise show last Friday at the Magic Stick, a small, great venue in Detroit, less than a mile from my office by Wayne State’s campus. I’d heard a couple of the songs they’ve released once or twice, but wasn’t really sure what to expect. After an hour-long set, I’m still not exactly sure what I think of them. I didn’t really have a whole lot to compare them to, and my expectations going into it were pretty minimal. I do know that: 1) It rocked, 2) I enjoyed it. Their new album Horehound is due out in a few weeks and it will be interested in to see my impression of it at the end of the summer after I’ve listened to it a few times.

I’ve been listening to the newest album by the Prime Ministers out of Detroit. They’ve got a CD release party scheduled for Saturday night, June 20th up at the Crofoot Ballroom in Pontiac for their new album ‘Compromiser’. Listening to the album, as I’ve mentioned took a couple of listens. I wasn’t overly impressed with the first two songs that struck me as punk-tinged pop written to be radio friendly, and easily consumed. The third track ‘Fort the Birds’ breaks from this a bit more with less punk and more of a Big Star, classic rock quality - excellent. The track ‘Only 35,’ pulls out a reminiscent, indie pop track, definitely a catchy tune, while the song ‘My Turn’ harkens back to a 1960’s pop quality. On my second listen, it occurred to me that many of the songs are well-composed, but don’t necessarily possess the highest degree of originality – something that I think pop music in general can often be accused of. By the third time I heard it while driving around in the car, my expectations of the album were far clearer and my enjoyment far greater. Their oft-used 4/4 time signature is heard on the drum beats throughout the album, but they manage to infuse some modern production sensibility into the album. Overall, a pretty good listen!

Next week I’ll talk more about expectations from different perspectives. But for now, think about hearing one of your favorite albums for the first time, and think about hearing it for the first time.

PHOTOS: The Dogs return to Ann Arbor by CnN

MCB's newest contributors Christian and Nicole were out late and for the highly anticipated return of The Dogs who kicked ass and took names all night.

Look for a show review to be added here later today (see below) and if you missed the show head on out to Lansing tomorrow for another great night of detroit punk at Mac's Bar.

Ann Arbors' rockin' history came full circle last nite (June 17, 2009) at the Blind Pig, when The Dogs ripped open the wounds they last inflicted some 35 years ago. For the young punters, a chance to find out if they were 'Tuff Enuff' to handle the full onslaught of an old school high energy Detroit/Lansing band. For the older Dogs fans, it was more of the band that refused to give up the fight back in the day! It was crystal from the outset, that their beloved Dogs had upped the antee with new and enhanced ass kicking energy. The Killed By Death heros went for the juggulars of the pups who dared to venture too close to the cage. Veteran packs just howled up at the moon from the safety of their Lazyboys, rationalizing it to be safer than taking the Dogs by the tail!

2009 Comerica Cityfest - July 1-5, 2009

Comerica Cityfest Turns 21 and is Ready to Party
Fourth of July Weekend 2009

DETROIT – Comerica Cityfest 2009, formerly Tastefest, is setting the stage to deliver a festival that’s as big and bangin’ as ever, with the best tunes and tastes in Detroit from Wednesday, July 1 to Sunday, July 5. The five-day, FREE event is turning 21 this year and is of age to party for a great cause, raising funds for the development and beautification of Detroit’s Historic New Center.

Last year, hundreds of stoked and soaked festival-goers took cover in the Fisher Building when a torrential summer downpour cut the opening day short. Little did they know that Cityfest staff was already planning Rain Check Wednesday for 2009. The festival plans for clear skies on Wednesday, July 1 for a belated kick-off performance by hip-hop veterans De La Soul, while local stars The Silent Years, Jazzhead, Magic Shop, The Dead Bodies and others will reprise their ’09 schedules on the Pure Detroit, Park and Jazz stages.

Five-time Grammy-award-winning blues guitarist Buddy Guy will close the festival on Sunday, July 5, with selections from his recent Grammy-nominated album Skin Deep and old favorites such as Damn Right I’ve Got the Blues, Feels like Rain and First Time I Met the Blues.

In addition to the great music, Comerica Cityfest 2009 will once again transform West Grand Boulevard into the area’s largest al fresco taste event, featuring cuisine diversity that is distinctly Detroit. Rounding out the returning Cityfest favorites are the 2nd Avenue Street Market, Cityfest Gallery, Modern Skate course, and other Cool and Kids Stuff Galore.

Comerica Cityfest 2009 will maintain its extended hours offering a great time in New Center from 11:30 a.m. to 11 p.m., Wednesday through Saturday, and 11:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Sunday. The festival will also continue its green initiative that was announced last year, including banning Styrofoam, encouraging the use of green products such as Green Safe, selling 100% organic cotton festival t-shirts and drastically reducing water usage through better distribution practices.

Admission to Comerica Cityfest is free. “Taste” tickets are $10 for 16 tickets. For updates and additional information about Comerica Cityfest 2009, please visit www.comericacityfest.com or call 313.872.0188.

Friday June 19th - SHOWTIME CLOTHING 20TH ANNIVERSARY PARTY W/ CRUD STIMULUS // FREE FREE FREE FREE

Last weekend I stopped into Showtime Clothing to do "an interview" with our main man Dan who is throwing a LITTLE party this coming Friday night to celebrate 20 years of business here in the city of Detroit. Since interviews kinda suck I decided to bring him a sandwich for lunch and he could just eat and nod his head to all my questions.
Having shopped at Showtime for a long time its easy to see why Dan has stayed in business through all the ups and downs in the economy - killer alternative clothing that no else offers and the attitude in the store that anything goes - if you want to try on a dress and pair of platforms go ahead even if your name is Frank or Jay or Dave or Tony
Showtime has it all including musical gear that kicks ass
MCB picked up one of these Italia guitars for Xmas last year
its very nice and well worth the bank roll

Here is shot of Dan after eating the lunch I brought to him
and then helping another very satisfied customer
get everything she needs for her Saturday night prowl

My personal favorites are the TOXIC WASTE shirts

Showtime is always running a giveaway contest
and the current item up for grabsis a TASCAM 2488 MC II mixer to be given away in mid July

Bottom line ...

Dan is throwing this gig on Friday night to show his appreciation for all the years Detroiter's have shopped at Showtime Clothing and in particular with all the hardships facing his customers these days he wanted to give back with a super fun time that was totally FREE!!!

Thanks Dan and Congrats from MCB!

Get all the details here and get to the party this Friday!

Upcoming Show: Black Jake & The Carnies - Trinity House Theater - 6/20

Ypsilanti's Black Jake & the Carnies will play a double bill at the Trinity House Theater in Livona on June 20th at 8pm. The Carnies will be joined by Ann Arbor's Orpheum Bell for a night of music in the cozy 90-seat theater.

Black Jake & the Carnies
Orpheum Bell

Black Jake and The Carnies sing of murder and bloody corpses but somehow they make it all entertaining and interesting. They race through bluegrass flavored songs as if they have a jug of moonshine in one hand and a bottle of amphetamines in the other. If you're a bluegrass purist or a fan of Peter, Paul, and Mary folk music, you'll probably hate Black Jake and The Carnies but I don't think they care. They are having too much fun. If you like punk music and you like bluegrass and you have an open mind, Black Jake and The Carnies will make you smile.

the Stooges - Jeff Howitt" RDW 7/27/07

"This dilapidated jungle of concrete and industrial red-brick neon factory
dust is extremely fertile territory for those with over active
imaginations. To be a person born and raised here, there is a sense of
gratitude for the laborious insights and cruel lessons this city has to
offer. Without its violence, without its brutality, without its impurity,
my poetry, my writing, has no balance of muse. That is why I feel it
necessary to try and create a balance with the savage for the people of
the community. We are really in control of the future perception of what
our mystical times will bestow upon the generations of poor children who
will have to clean up this human disaster. The least I can do is bring the
creative souls, the historians, together for a cognizant brain storm of
spirit cleansing - Drew Bardo" RDW 7/27/07

paul hitz on Detroit

Tuesday already? time flies when you're havin fun, as they say. I wanted this bit to be about Volunteering in Detroit but it didn't happen yet, I need more time and well, experience before I can talk about it, but that doesn't mean I'm not going to type this. See the thing about it is that I want to give something back to Detroit other than my damn money. Time, talent, knowledge, life and shit like that is what Detroit needs, a belief in a city that's against the ropes, the underdog, and I haven't done all of that yet, but I will, I believe in Detroit, so once I actually do some volunteering in Detroit myself, I'll kick that story a little more.

For now I have to once again point out how much Detroit know how to party, this weekend was no exception leading up to the Red Bull Air Races. Not only was MCB at Bonnaroo, Huey Lewis and METRIC MCB was on both sides of the River this weekend to get 'All of It'

there should be links at all of our photos back to MCB

I'd like to thank the people over at Red Bull for their hospitality this weekend, they always do such an awesome job of taking care of their patrons and media, very impressive. I experienced the same thing last year at DEMF and the Air Races. This year, RBAR hooked in with several local bars to get the word out about these local establishments, all in line with their advertisements for RBAR! It seemed Detroit gave them the keys to the City to setup whatever they wanted and they ran with it with class. Really, how cool is that? to promote local bars as part of their Saturday night events and celebration party! Bravo

i guess last week flew by so fast cause Monday I was up at the Crofoot in Pontiac checking out An Horse (opening touring band, TELEKINESIS from Seattle rocked, Cotton Lilly started). AN HORSE, who I severely under estimated in several ways, I listened to their music, its driving aussie styled rock and roll, image, art, check... but not on youtube where they were on freakin Letterman are you kidding me? featured on the blog earlier this month of course... I had a Blue Moon with Kate and Damon in the dressing room before the show and talked to them about their tour and Detroit. All the way from Australia they've been to Michigan before and were intrigued with its past and present and so much history and wanted to know more, they wanted to go exploring, so next time a Tour of Detroit is in order.

here's a slideshow from our friends An Horse, download their music, check em out

TANK ~ Wednesday, June 17th

Exciting things are happening in the local art community. TANK, a practical art school located at Richard Gage design studio is offering instruction, training, equipment and studio space to new and established artists. TANK provides a non-traditional learning environment to explore deeper aspects of your work and creativity. Drawing from the experience and skills of established artists and craftspersons, participants can learn new techniques, hone their skills and grow their body of work.

James Lutomski, and Assistant Professor of Art at Marygrove College in Detroit, is currently exhibiting new work at TANK’s gallery. This mixed media exhibition was well received at the opening last Friday and he will be holding a lecture/presentation on Wednesday, June 17th at 7pm.

From the artist:

“The class/lecture will showcase the work and travel that I did in Korea in August of 2008. I spent 5 days, on invitation from the Gangjin Celadon Korean Association, exhibiting, demonstrating and studying Korean pottery methods at the Gangjin Celadon Festival in collaboration with Korean clay artists. I also was invited to tour Korea and meet with university professors, Intangible Cultural Treasures and other clay artists. My travels throughout Korea also included visits to many museums, Buddhist temples and other important cultural sites. I will discuss and hopefully demonstrate working methods, cultural aspects and the general state of the Korean art community and their reverence for the hand made object.”

The class will be held at TANK, 425 W. Nine Mile Rd, Hazel Park, MI, for a suggested donation of just $5. This is the first of many programs by artists for artists, which is at the very core of TANK. You can also call the studio at (248) 547-1114 to see James Lutomski’s current exhibit by appointment.

To contact TANK, or to receive information about future gallery shows and classes, please email tank425@gmail.com. You can also find TANK 425 on Facebook to join discussions about current and future events, see pictures of past events and become part of the community.
