Wild At Heart
Wow, what a busy week. WXOU has been doing numerous events on campus this past week and I just got involved in some projects that took some time away from getting g my blog done on Monday, so I declare this week that Friday is the new Monday so here is my blog for the week.
First off, I want to congratulate the Shock on taking over the top spot in their Eastern Conference, and clinching the top spot for the playoffs, with impressive wins over Phoenix (89-78) and Washington (78-66) at home this week. Katie Smith had an impressive game on Tuesday hitting her three point shots, while Kara Braxton used her size to help dismantle Washington as their big girls got in serious foul trouble in the second half. With one game left, they have a good chance of going to the finals again this year. Despite Ford’s injury, Katie is playing some of her best basketball right now (coming off her Olympic gold medal) and “Tweety” Nolan is still looking good as the WNBA’s answer to Tashawn Prince. Braxton (who seems in her best shape since I have covered the Shock) and Pierson seem to have elevated their game this year which makes them very strong down low. They are also getting good play from Powell and the rest of their supporting cast. I can’t wait for the post season to see if the Shock can bring home championship number 3 to the Palace.
I will be down at the Metro Music Expo this weekend which will be held at the Novi Expo Center Metro Music Expo (September 12 – 14 = Show Hours: Friday: 4 pm – 9 pmSaturday: 12 pm – 9 pm & Sunday: 12 pm – 6 pm). This is an Expo about everything music with the chance to see live music by local artists such as Bear Lake, The Prime Ministers and much more. There are also exhibits from a number of local business’ ranging from 89X, Metrotimes, Record Time, Specs Howard and the Detroit Blues Society. You can also listen to speakers and educational seminars from everyone like Eminem attorney Howard Hertz to musician Amp Fiddler to ASCAP’s Shawn Murphy. Their will also be gear clinics from American Group Sound & Lighting, Dynacord, ElectroVoice, M-Audio and Shure. It should be a fun time so I hope to see some of you there.

I went to Ann Arbor this week to see Great Big Sea at the Michigan Theatre which was a wonderful show. While in Ann Arbor, I did manage to take in some of the local art scene. I started at the Natural History Museum on campus to take in the new exhibit on “Contempory Brassworking in Ghana” which looks at the tradition of lost-wax casting as practiced among the Akan people of Ghana for the past 500 years. You can see how they do the casting process as well as looking at about 50 brass objects from the region. While there, make sure to check out the second floor which houses their wonderful dinosaur exhibit including their new mastodon skeleton. They also have a small exhibit on the history of pipes.
If you go to the new hospital building, they have a number of art galleries which I took the time to wander. I started off at the University Hospital which had three exhibits. The first was “Orbs Of Brightness” which had the work of Mark A Piotrowski. These cut out shapes are scanned using a computer and handcrafted in vibrant glazes to make them really stand out. The main lobby also had exhibits of the landscape photography of Dale Fisher and silk flowers by Rebecca Lambers. In the spacious lobby, they also have a mock-up of a doctor’s office as it would have looked in 1908 which just adds a little something. The Cancer Center has 2 exhibits which include various artists work in fabrics and an exhibit entitled “Cinderella’s Revenge” which contains a series of high-heeled shoes designed by David Ian Grant.
In the Taubman Lobby, the remaining four exhibits include a series of sculptures made of limestone and steel, various ceramic tiles by local sibling artists Karim and Nawal Motawi and charcoal and pastel portraits by Nancy Swearingen. My favorite exhibit was Steven Huyser-Honig’s exhibits of Michigan Lighthouses. There were a number of pictures which just blew me away by their vibrancy and composition. If nothing else, check out this exhibit before it goes away on Oct 13th to make way for the new exhibits. Also check out the arboretum which is beautiful, complete with a health food restaurant and waterfall.
The campus also has a Dentistry exhibit, an old book exhibit on the top of the main library, the Sterns Musical collection, the Art Galleries, the Gerald Ford Library, and the soon to be open new Art Museum and Archeology Museum. All are free and lots of fun for those that like to explore.
Borders Book Store in Ann Arbor on Fri, Sept 26th – there is a reading and signing with Jamie Lee Curtis for her new book “Big Words for Little People”. Taproot will be performing there on Thurs 18th at 12:30PM. Arrive Early.
Hope every one has a good day and lastly, if you would like to see the contempory jam band Indian Ocean when they perform at the Ford Community and Performing Arts Center in Dearborn on Sept 20th, send an email with the header “Indian Ocean” to mhtml:%7B755F0DA7-D765-4B00-8A96-04A2F674284E%7Dmid://00000043/!x-usc:mailto:doramu13@yahoo.com.
