WILD AT HEART - Thursday August 28th 2008

Here is today's blog - Bill

Wild At Heart

Labor Day Weekend Extravaganza
Not sure how excited I am about Labor Day since I have been unemployed for
almost a year, but this is a big weekend with a lot of fun stuff going on.

Labor Day is a federal holiday observed on the first Monday in September
since its start in 1882 as the Central Labor Union sought to create "a day
off for the working citizens". Now some might joke that a lot of today’s
labor force already takes enough time off but I’ll play nice (i.e. – get
back to work and read this blog during your lunch break).

Besides being a day of rest, Labor Day means different thing to different people.

For some it signals the end of summer and for others the start of the NFL and NCAA
Football seasons (I’m sure fans of the Lions, Spartans and Wolverines have
there stomachs tied in knots since all three programs have a rough start
which might show what there season might look like and it might not be
pretty).

Locally, there is the Mackinac Bridge where people may walk the length of the Mackinac Bridge. Whatever Labor Day means to you, just have a good weekend and be safe so you can get back to work on Tuesday in one piece. If you haven’t decided on what to do this weekend, let me make some suggestions.

Starting off is the 11th Annual Arts Beats & Eats in downtown Pontiac. Musically, it is a very sound festival with a lot of great local and national acts. Friday is a strong night for local artists including blues artist Harmonica Shah, Monkey Jacket,Hard Lessons, Twistin Tarantulas
and the Howling Diablos. You will also have performances by national acts Blues Traveler and Rusted Root so if you really want to rock out, this seems to be the best night for that. Also, the Crofoot will be hosting a “Metromix presents Encore” opening night after party with complimentary drinks provided until 10 p.m. courtesy of the Detroit Sports Club and live music by the Hard Lessons, Millions of Brazilians, Prussia and Our Brother the Megazord plus others. Saturday seems to be the day for country and jazz fans with artists such asThornetta Davis, Billy Currington, Boney James (a two-time Grammy nominee who is a saxophonist who popularized urban jazz - an updated version of contemporary jazz that contains elements of hip-hop). Sunday is kind of a mixed bag for me but despite 80’s rockers Loverboy, you do have a performance but funk and soul legend Chaka Khan. Local artists of note include Manna & Quail, Emily Rose, Robin Horlock Band, Broadzilla and the Muggs. There are a lot of other great local bands which
probably shows the biggest diversity of great local talent at the festival. Things wind down on Monday with national act Puddle of Mudd and local artists such as Jill Jack and the Ragbirds. Other reasons to go to Downtown Pontiac for this festival include the Guitar Hero Championships (sign up on www.artsbeatseats.com), numerous art vendors, a lot of fun things for the kids and ways to help yourself become more environmentally friendly.

This should be a great festival and I hope to see you down there. Of course, maybe you are looking to be a little more mellow atmosphere which would lead you to the Detroit Jazz Festival down at Hart Plaza and Campus Martius. This year the focus seems to be on more traditional jazz opening on Friday night with four-time Grammy Award winning jazz vocalist Dianne
Reeves.

This year’s line- up does have some uniqueness with “Mashed Potato Time” singer Dee Dee Sharp, The Derek Trucks Band (coming off a great performance at Rothbury) and jam band Stratospheerius. However, you will mostly hear just some great traditional jazz with artists like Pat Martino Quartet, Roy Hargrove Quintet, Count Basie Orchestra, DSO Civic Jazz
Orchestra and the Dizzy Gillespie All-Star Big Band. This is usually a nice
event to stroll around and take in the various stages if the weather stays
nice (only some showers on Saturday at this point look to hassle the weekend
so far).

Complete schedule at www.detroitjazzfest.com

Lastly, there is the 2008 Belle Isle Grand Prix. Like last year, Friday is
FREE admission day where you can watch some of the qualifying rounds and
check out some of the Meijer Family Fun Zone events. There will be some big
name musical acts at the races with performances by Sugar Ray on Saturday
and Everclear on Sunday. There are three races happening this weekend
including the IndyCar Series, the American Le Mans Series and the SPEED
world challenge.

For more information and full racing and entertainment schedules, go to www.detroitgp.com

Also, I just heard that Paxahau is putting on a special event this weekend to promote it’s 10th year anniversary. Since 1998 Paxahau has promoted electronic music and has grown to include a web archive, booking agency, record label and an event production company which puts on numerous events in the Detroit area including the popular Movement Festival.

The events include a pre-party on Thursday, August 28, 2008 at Exodus (located in Greektown) with music from DJ’s Chuck Flask, Rich Korach and John Johr, Saturday, August 30, 2008 at Oslowith Zip and Chuck Flask, Sunday, August 31, 2008 at Z’s Villafeaturing DJ’s Richie Hawtin, Magda, Rich Korach and Dan Bain and lastly Sunday, August 31, 2008at Northern Lights Loungewith Cassy and John Johr.

Full details can be found on their updated website, www.paxahau.com

If you are looking for some movie to check out, here is one that might interest you. Hollywood loves remakes since they feel the audience will be comfortable with the product and be more likely to plunk down the cost of a ticket over some new property. In this case, we are looking at the remake Death Race (originally released as Death Race 2000 which was directed by
John Carpenter and starred Sylvester Stallone and John Carradine). The original is a cross country race where pedestrians are run down for points (creating a wonderful pastime for real drivers) and a secret group is trying to bring an end to the race. Transplant the race into a future where the race is now a pay-per-view event for a prison (the winner of 5 races gets
parole). Ex-NASCAR champion Jensen Ames (Jason Statham) gets framed for killing his wife and sent to prison where he is supposed to race in place of the newly killed Frankenstein (who wore a mask so nobody knows his true identity). The warden is totally vicious and played nicely by Joan Allen but that is all the praise I can really give for the film. As the warden is trying to make sure nobody survives this race, Jensen tries to find a way to get revenge on his wife’s killer (who is in the prison) and to find a way to escape. The film has some nice moments but none of the overall fun of the original which I think to confine it into a traditional prison movie. I would suggest renting the original and seeing this update only if you really are a Stratham fan (though this doesn’t have a lot of his trademark fighting of the Transporter films which would have helped). Grade C-.

Alice Cooper rocked the State Fair last night, effectively ending the best of their concert schedule but you can still go to check out the wonderful Miracle Of Life exhibit, the half-snake/half snake lady (you just got to love a fair with freaks), a display by the Michigan Sports Hall Of fame,
fishing on the pond, the world’s largest stove, seeing the best livestock Michigan has to offer and of course the best artery hardening food we have to offer. I spent three nights down there and enjoyed just wondering around.

I also spent some time at the Next Shot Golf Center which is a permanent fixture of the buildings down there but they were offering demos during the fair. I tried some of the holes on the Pebble Beach course which was kind of neat for those gold fans who don’t like golfing in the snow. This is a nice way to keep your game sharp. Check them out if you get down there.

I hope everyone has a great weekend and that I see you at some of these
wonderful Labor Day events. Take care and talk to you again on Tuesday since
Monday is Labor Day and I’ll be busy. Peace Out.

MCB Photographers - Counting Crows // Aimee Mann

If you just can't make up your mind what to do on Friday night you can check out Aimee Mann @ Royal Oak Music Theatre or The Counting Crows out at DTE.

Counting Crows' Saturday Nights-- the album’s angry, electric, dissolute opening salvo -- was produced by Gil Norton (The Pixies, Foo Fighters.) The more acoustic and folk-influenced Sunday Mornings was produced by Brian Deck whose past credits include Modest Mouse and Iron &Wine.

Aimee Mann’s seventh solo release to date, @#%&! Smilers, is a return to form after the artistic detours of 2005’s concept album The Forgotten Arm and 2006’s Christmas CD One More Drifter in the Snow.

MCB gave away free tickets and early promo copies of the CDs to readers weeks ago and it doesnt stop there....we got press passes to boot so check back here for some great photos of the shows from Amy Palomar and Brett Lawrence.

Polka Floyd returns to Detroit for Hamtramck Labor Day Festival

THE ONE & ONLY “POLKA FLOYD”
RETURNS TO DETROIT TO ROCK THE HAMTRAMCK LABOR DAY FESTIVAL!

After a rousing performance at The Hamtramck Festival last year, Toledo’s own The POLKA FLOYD show, “Pink Floyd done Polka style” tribute band makes a return appearance to the stage on Sunday, September 1 at the Hamtramck Labor Day Festival.

The POLKA FLOYD show pays tribute to Pink Floyd in their own way, featuring classic material from throughout the band’s history from the early Syd Barrett period to the epic “The Wall”, including “Comfortably Numb” the first song they covered together as a band. They have also performed the seminal “Dark Side of the Moon” album in its entirety.

What started out as a fun band rehearsal has taken on a life of i ts own. Along with their many headlining performances, the Polka Floyd show has also opened for notable acts including Unknown Hinson and ? & The Mysterians. They were also invited to play music festivals: The Shamybash in Columbus, Detroit Cityfest and the Hamtramck Festival’s “Polka Palooza.”

They have since taken the show on the road to enthusiastic audiences from Cleveland to Fargo.
In 2008, Static Records released their self-titled debut album that gives a unique spin on seven classic Pink Floyd tracks from six different albums that span three decades

The show is Sunday, September 1 at 3:30pm on the North Stage at the annual Hamtramck Labor Day Festival located on Jos Campau between Caniff and Carpenter in Hamtramck’s business district. The festival which runs all weekend is free and open to all ages.

FREE CD & FREE MP3: Last Time On Earth - Telepathique

Since they are skipping Detroit on the way to Chicago we figured to offer a copy of the latest up for grabs - 1st reader to email us - GONE

FREE MP3
"Love and Lust" Free Download

"I'm Not The Man You Think I am" Video on Pitchfork TV

Although their story is probably new to most North Americans, both Theobaldo and Pires have long been accomplished in their own rights overseas, with and outside of their work in Telepathique. Pires’ solo work as a vocalist is steeped in African and Brazilian music traditions, and Theobaldos remix of “Dadinho” on the ‘City Of God” soundtrack became a smash hit (he also produced Brazilian artists Otto and BiD, to wide acclaim.)

Vital and immediate throughout, the record’s range of influences is stunning and the integration of those elements is enthralling, urban and provocative. “Sex, Drugs And Funk & Roll” mixes raw pop guitar with the gritty carioca of their cities’ ghettos, “UR A Joke” pairs simple throbbing techno synth with Pires’ conversational vocals—she tells the listener that she belongs to them, then coldly throws dismissive insults: equal parts turn on and fuck off; a perfect alchemy for dance tension. “Love and Lust” draws on European electro-pop, delivering a groove with a mechanically German coolness.

“Telefunk” and “Wild”, clocking in at six and a half and seven and a half minutes each, respectively, show Telepathique’s expert ability to be both expansive and progressively beat-heavy. Amazingly, Last Time On Earth was intimately recorded and produced by the duo using only a laptop, a couple of microphones, synths, a guitar, Pires’ voice, and the pair’s genius beat instincts.

WILD AT HEART - Monday August 24th 2008

Kirk, Here is today's blog - Bill
"Wild Bill" Kettelhut provides the "blog" to this anti-blog
He has a radio program on WXOU out of Oakland University

Wild At Heart

You know your city has a bad rap when the lead guitarist of a Christian band
(Third Day) takes a cheap shot at you during a performance. On Thursday, he
joked that he was a bit afraid of playing a USO show in Iraq for the troops
when he was reminded that they had played Detroit before.

Yeah it’s funny, but you wish it wasn’t so.

The Olympics is finally over and I must admit that I enjoyed watching them
this year, esp beach volleyball, team volleyball, BMX (did you see some of
the wipe outs – Ouch!), women’s basketball and events with Phelps and Bolt.

For most track, gymnastics and swimming events, I hate watching the
qualifiers but I like to see the final events. I still can’t get into Equestrian or floor exercises (maybe because looking at cute girls in those form fitting outfits whom you know are underage makes me feel creepy). I missed the closing ceremony but I thought the opening was spectacular (and I don’t care about what might have been faked with regards to the fireworks)
proving that there are some talented film people in China such as Zhang Yimou, the director of such wonderful films as Raise the Red Lantern, Hero and House Of Flying Daggers.

While his work on the Olympics is amazing, I can’t help but think about some of the hardships he encounters in his youth due to his parents involvement with the Nationalist
party when he was forced to give up his studies and spent time as a farm laborer and as a cotton textile mill. At the age of 27, he had to write a personal appeal to the Ministry of Culture.

Luckily for us and the Chinese government, the authorities relented and admitted him into the Department of Cinematography.

Speaking of politics, I had the opportunity to talk with James Brown last week.

This is not the Godfather of Soul, but the drummer of UB40 who was in town last Friday. UB40 is one of the biggest recording acts in England having around 50 top 40 hits and they put on a wonderful show. They got their start by claiming unemployment (using the UB40 form or Unemployment Benefit, Form 40) and they used their first check to help promote their
first gigs.

There current album, "TwentyFourSeven", is the last to feature Ali Campbell who left for solo work after 30 years with the band and replaced by his brother Duncan. Brown said the album is their most political in a long time and a lot of their early work touched on themes of
unemployment and racism, though when I asked about the politics of Briton, he was more interested in the US. He said that the British are very interested in our election (probably more so that most Americans) and said that most are hoping that Obama gets elected and brings a change to our policies. He feels Obama represents something which is hard to pin down but
similar to past presidents like Kennedy and Reagan. I had to miss their show for the Commodores, though I had seen them last year and hope they come back
around again.

Speaking of drummers, I went to see Def Leppard and enjoyed watching Rick Allen, the drummer who lost his arm but has managed to retool his drum kit to allow him to play using his one good arm and both his feet using an electronic kit.

Incredible! The guy rocks and the rest of the band aren’t that bad either. Also, the movie The Rocker is officially out. This is the story of a failed drummer (must be a theme this week) who is given a second chance at fame. Robert "Fish" Fishman (the Office's Rainn Wilson) is an extremely passionate drummer for the eighties hair band Vesuvius, who is living the rock n' roll
dream in Cleveland until he is kicked out of the band.

Twenty years later with crushed dreams and working in an office, he hears that his nephew's
high school rock band A.D.D. is looking for a new drummer.

They reluctantly make him the newest member of the band to play for the prom. After an
embarrassing finish to the set, he gets kicked out. He feels awful and tries to make good by getting them a real gig. A viral video of a nude "Fishman" drumming catapults them to success and the band goes on tour, culminating at a gig where they open for Vesuvius with hilarious results. I thought this was a very funny movie showing Wilson can carry a
movie and he is supported very nicely by Teddy Geiger (from my hometown of
Rochester, NY), Emma Stone and Josh Gad, who could actually play a real gig.
Christina Applegate plays the love interest in the movie and William Arnett
as Vesuvius’ lead singer. There are a few head-shaking moments but overall,
it is enjoyable to watch esp for the Beatles parallels (look for a cameo by
Pete Best). Grade: B.

Yesterday was a very 80’s day for me at the Regeneration tour. Naked Eyes
started the show with a nice set including "Always Something There To Remind
Me" and "Promises, Promises". A Flock Of Seagulls are hard for me to watch
nowadays but most of the audience enjoyed such hits as "I Ran" and "Space
Age Love Song". ABC came out and rocked the place with some new songs as
well as hits like "Poison Arrow" and "Be Near Me". Belinda Carlisle put on a
set of her solo hits and some Go-Go’s favorites. She is looking really good
these days. The stars of the night were Human League who I wished could have
played a longer set, but this was one of my favorite shows of the year.

This also sets up Friday’s show at the Royal Oak Music Theatre up nicely when
Squeeze and Aimee Mann take the stage. Tune in to Wild At Heart on WXOU
88.3FM (or online at http://www.blogger.com/www.wxou.org) between 8-10AM Thursday morning to win tickets to the show.

There is a lot going on this week starting with the Michigan State Fair, first held in 1849. From a music point of view, there is not much action this year with only a few name acts on the line up and most of them generic or aimed at kids such as Corbin Bleu of High School The Musical fame tonight and ex-Cheetah Girl Raven Symone on Tues.

We can purge ourselves on Wed when Alice Cooper returns for a rocking show. Despite the anemic lineup, I always enjoy hanging out at the fishing pond and trying out the bow target
shooting. I will hopefully run into some of you there and will post a special blog on Thursday talking more about the fair along with movie reviews of ‘Lakeview Terrace’ and ‘Death Race’. Also, I’ll look at line-up at Arts Beats and Eats and the Belle Isle Grand Prix.

Have a good week and see you all later and look at www.myspace.com/wildatheart_13 for more info about what’s happening.

PHOTOS: Help for the Hopeless Tour by Cherie Stangis

August 19, 2008 - Innerpartysystem brought their unique blend of pop, electronic and punk to the Crofoot in Pontiac MI as a part of the Hope for the Hopeless Tour w/ Kill Hannah, Medic Droid and The White Tie Affair.

Cherie Stangis scored an exclusive interview with Jared Piccone, drummer and vocalist for the group plus nailed a nice set of photos for MCB

"With guitarist and synthesist Kris Barman supplying the concert goers with a rampant beat of pop and electronic mixes in the background, drummer Jared Piccone took a few minutes before their show talk the group. Hailing from Mohnton, PA (population approx. 2,000), innerpartysystem is comprised of Patrick Nissley (vocals), Jared Piccone (drums and vocals), Kris Barman (Guitar, Synth and Vocals) and Jesse Cronnan (Synth, Samples and Vocals).

According to Jared, he and Kris and Patrick and Jesse have friendships dating back to public school. They jammed with a variety of bands in the Mohton area before coming together and forming innerpartysystem. Down to earth and imminently likable, Jared shared what he believes to be the secret of innerpartysystem’s success, making music that inspires and excites their audience, while staying true to themselves.

The recording of their first EP, The Download EP took nearly two years. During most of that time, the group members lived in Jared’s home, a dwelling about the size of a one bedroom apartment. The Download EP was released in November of 2007 and the band began touring in early 2008, with a lengthy stint in the UK.

When asked about inspiration, Jared noted that lead singer Patrick Nissley writes most of lyrics for their songs and reported that they are “stories about things in his (Patrick’s) life.” Stories, said Jared, familiar to all the members of the group, due to their long standing relationships, “I’ll hear them and remember the event because I was there or heard about it.”

While admitting to laying down a “pop” sound in the studio, Jared revealed that their live performances tend to be edgy, aggressive and raw. After hearing them live, it’s easy to spot the “verse, chorus, verse” ode to pop and rock with a big nod to punk and electronica.

Awaiting the drop of their full length recording in September of 2008, Jared doesn’t see an end in sight to touring, at least until 2009 “I was told that most groups, after they drop their first album, are on the road for two years.” He looks forward to heading back to the UK because “we really took off there” to the point that they will be headlining their shows."

FREE CD: Don't Tell Columbus from Graham Parker - ALSO LIVE AT CALLHANS in AUBURN HILLS on Friday Sept 5th

If you are a new reader of MCB you are probably wondering how we get all this stuff to give away to on the website...well its complicated - we buy somestuff (usually local bands or artists at a show we hit up) or the bands themselves contact us to offer freebies and then the PR companies and record labels are all over us to provide "coverage" for their artist while in detroit
We all always ask for freebies for the readers and then hook you up!

Here is a good one from our good friends over at Bloodshot Records

FREE CD: DON'T TELL COLUMBUS from Graham Parker
to the 1st reader to email us GONE

Graham Parker Live
Friday September 5th 2008 at Callahan's in Auburn Hills

"You can tell he was inspired in writing these 12 new songs, because they serve up verse after verse, each one sharper than the last, and the bare-bones pub-rock arrangements provide plenty of room for Parker to unleash some of the finest rock and soul singing of his career."

Sometimes an artist is anointed a “legend.” Sometimes this artist’s body of work is so consistently lauded, of such ongoing interest and creativity, the audience might be tempted to take the level of craft for granted. Sometimes such an artist, after a time of flying beneath the radar, emerges with a run of stunning material ascending beyond time and genre. Sometimes this artist casts a shadow large enough they are known by just their initials.

Graham Parker is such an artist and this is his time. Thirty years into a storied career in rock ‘n’ roll that began with his band The Rumour (pre-saging new wave, pub rock and punk) Graham Parker finds himself at the absolute top of his game and in the midst of a extended creative hot streak. Hot on the heels of the Bloodshot releases Your Country (2004), Songs of No Consequence (2005), the seething digital-only single about Iraq—the now sadly outdated "2000 Funerals" - and the blistering live album 103 Degrees in June (2006), Don’t Tell Columbus crackles with desperation and redemption sung with rich, passionate power. And hooks. Lots and lots of effortless hooks. Yes, the new millennium has thus far been very good to GP and music fans reap the rewards. Suffused with the heft of the epic, Don’t Tell Columbus’s lyrical and emotional resonance straddles the Atlantic and evinces GP’s stature as one of the most gifted writers in rock ‘n’ roll.

From the personal and metaphorically grand “The Other Side of the Reservoir” to the overtly political and swinging “Stick to the Plan,” this album ripples with tension between the melancholic, the urgent and the hopeful. Parker’s biting social commentary is in full force here; only GP can have you happily humming along to songs swaddled in desperate loneliness and internal mayhem. It is unhealthy, perhaps even obscene, that someone should be able to come up with an album this good this far into their career."

Friday, September 5th at Callahan's
2105 South Blvd. – Auburn Hills, MI
Tickets $20 ADV - $25 DOS
Showtime 8:30pm

Michael Hurtt and his Haunted Hearts Play Inaugural Dates in Detroit

w/Bones Maki, Jennie Knaggs & the Sure Shots, The Homeville Circle

Two Shows = Two Chances:

Saturday August 30th See The Hearts at Hamtramck Labor Day Festival at 4pm

and then later that evening @ PJ's Lager House at 11pm

Formed in 2004 with the singular goal of resurrecting New Orleans' once-rich, now nearly invisible hillbilly music heritage, in Come Back To Louisiana, Michael Hurtt and his Haunted Hearts remind listeners once again that soul singer Ernie K-Doe hit the nail squarely on the head when he memorably stated, "I'm not sure, but I think, all music came from New Orleans.

"That would include music of the rarified and rural string band variety. Whether you call it hillbilly, country, honky-tonk or rockabilly; its place in Crescent City history can't be denied: from western swing forerunners Al Bernard and Clarence Williams to Jody Leavins—whose original 1952 country rendition of "Mardi Gras Mambo" paved the way for the Hawkettes' perennial favorite—it was a strain that seemed to disappear into the Confederate mist around the time WWL's pioneering all-night trucker radio broadcast The Road Gang pulled up stakes, hauling its once-proud proclamation of "Originating From New Orleans" with it.

Exploding onto the Crescent City scene with R&B iconoclasts the Royal Pendletons in the early '90s, Michael Hurtt had long dreamed of a versatile string band that conjured the country music's hidden history; one rooted in the swamplands of the Gulf Coast that sidestepped the all-too-common curse of New Orleans provincialism to salute long-disregarded hillbilly strongholds like Detroit, Cincinnati, Memphis and all points--rural and urban--in between.Armed with a box of scratchy 45s, an acoustic guitar, and a clutch of backwoods numbers that he'd penned during a barnstorming European tour with Tav Falco's Panther Burns, Hurtt hooked up with like-minded guitarist J.D. Mark, multi-instrumentalist Mitch "Wichita Falls" Palmer—a triple threat on banjo, steel and take-off electric guitar—and upright bass master John "Bacon Grease" Trahey. Shifting gears effortlessly from Deep South rockers to Bayou ballads to true-blue hillbilly swing, the Haunted Hearts' first show forecast a star-crossed future.

Debuting in September 2004 as a hurricane roared towards New Orleans, the band plied their Dixie-fried trade throughout the Gulf Coast and Mid-South, making fans as varied as gonzo journalist Hunter S. Thompson, Black Oak Arkansas singer Jim Dandy and renegade record producer Kim Fowley, who envisioned a documentary about the band's exploits entitled Gumbo Confidential. But no one could envision the outcome of the docudrama brought about by the federal levee failures in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, a short year later.

Scattered to the winds while their homes lay in peril; not allowed back into the city to even assess the damage, the Hearts gathered at Memphis's Electraphonic Studio to record what would become as much an aural snapshot of this strange twilight period of suspended animation as it would their contribution to country music's deep catalog legacy.

Engineered live-in-the-studio by Bo-Keys bassist Scott Bomar (musical director for the recent films Hustle and Flow and Black Snake Moan) the session kicked off with Jay Chevalier's 1963 "Come Back to Louisiana," recently named the state's official recovery song, but the Hearts' opening theme since day one. Fittingly, it came to an end with the haunting "Trouble on the Road," a tale of hurricane exile sparked by Chevalier and Trahey in those first dark days of uncertainty. In between, the band dusted off timelessly relevant ancientry like Whitey Knight's "Another Brew, Bartender," Tommy Scott's "Juke Joint Girl" and Ford Nix's "Ain't No Sign I Wouldn't If I Could." They lived up to their name with foreboding, minor-keyed obscurities like Devora Brown's "You Can't Stop Me From Loving You" and the Country Dudes' "Have A Ball." They even threw in a little double-entendre auto-erotica in the form of Tommy Odom's "She Won't Turn Over For Me," since featured in the opening sequences of NPR's Car Talk.

Cherry-picking from their own discography, they mined half a dozen originals that range from the straight-ahead ("I Can't Say I'm Sorry For Being Myself") to the swinging ("I'm On My Last Go 'Round," "I'm Not Going Down With The Ship"); the sinister ("Mean, Mean Moon," "Hey Little Tornado") to the ethereal ("I Dreamed By Starlight").

The result is a rock-a-bayou testament that transcends mere genres and shatters much revisionist history, echoing the rough-and-ready sounds of white-hot hillbilly jazz erupting into rock 'n' roll.Self-released in 2006 to limited distribution, Come Back to Louisiana recently received the promotion it's long deserved courtesy of New Orleans' Allons Records, who have expanded the release to include not-to-be-missed liner notes courtesy of local historian and Hearts aficionado Patrick "The Lakeview Kid" Davis.

A long-awaited vinyl edition is set for release later this year.

This coming weekend is The 28th Annual Hamtramck Labor Day Festival and on Sunday just after the infamous perogi eating contest - Swamp Sisters will be playing a short set of about 20-30 minutes. As for Nightmare Sinema - in case you didn't hear the kids from The School of Rock in Royal Oak have teamed up with Wolfman Mac himself and will be providing the music to the shows and performing in costume as well. MCB has an video interview lined up for Sept 11 on the set so stay tuned for that one real soon - it should be fun.

Hamtramck Bazaar - Across from Paychecks - Sat 10am-3pm

"Where else in town, on a hot, sunny July Saturday, could you find affordable appliances, clothes, CDs and DVDs and collectible jazz rock 'n' roll memorabilia (like a Paul Stanley of Kiss toy racing car)?

Not to mention a place to take your bottles, plastic containers, mixed paper and cardboard to be recycled?

At the Hamtramck Bazaar, of course, which sets up in the Hamtramck city parking lot on Caniff at McDougall every forth Saturday of the month.

The next bazaars will be held Aug. 23 and Sept. 27 at the same location.

Angel Proffitt organized the recycling portion of the event and said she is working toward getting a regular schedule for residents to dispense with recyclables.

"We hope we can do it every month eventually," Proffitt said.
"Or every two weeks is even better. It's a goal that I think we can reach."

Matt Wertz "Under The Summer Sun" Coming 9/16
"5:19" Free Download

Matt Wertz is from Liberty, Missouri, but has called Nashville, Tennessee, home for the last seven years. It seems fitting that he would be writing his own biography on the cusp of his first major label release, just as he did eight years ago before releasing his first independent album. This time, though, he's not trying to play it off like he didn't write it. Matt goes on to say "The record that will be released on Universal Republic is called "Under Summer Sun" and it is a combination of my favorite songs from my first few independent releases, like "5:19" and "Everything's Right," as well as four new songs. Among the new tracks are "Waiting," an introspective bedroom song that deals with the fear that I'm "growing old but not quite growing up," and "Summer Sun," my best effort at a nostalgic summer love song in the vein of Stevie Wonder musically and Don Henley emotionally. And the rest of the songs will strike a chord with anyone who enjoys soulful, carefree, singer-songwriter pop music."

FREE CD: Jody Raffoul - BIG SKY - CD Release @ Fifth Ave RO Sept 25th

1st reader to email us - GONER gets a copy of this great motorcity music from Jody Raffoul

JODY RAFFOUL SETS THE STAGE FOR FIRST-EVER U.S. ALBUM RELEASE
"BIG SKY" IN-STORES SEPTEMBER 16, 2008

"There are not many musicians that can say their music appeals equally to fans of Kid Rock, Nickelback, Collective Soul, Joe Cocker, Blues Traveler, Richard Marx, and the Allman Brothers. JODY RAFFOUL is not your average artist. Not only has he shared the stage with all of these aforementioned acts, JODY was also the National winner of Bon Jovi’s 2006 “Have a Nice Gig” contest, in which he was hand-picked and announced personally by Jon Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora. JODY went on to open a sold out show at Giant’s Stadium in Bon Jovi’s home state of New Jersey. BIG SKY – which is JODY RAFFOUL’s first national U.S. album release, via Fontana/Universal on September 16 - is poised to be his big breakthrough.

Originally hailing from a small town in Southern Ontario, Canada, RAFFOUL relocated to Detroit, Michigan where he perfected an equal parts roots rock and pop sound that easily appeals to fans of both musical styles. JODY is a confirmed road dog, averaging over 200 shows per year. Previous albums include 2000’s Simple Life and 2004’s Like A Star; which have sold collectively in excess of 25,000 from live show sales alone and has set the stage for BIG SKY’s U.S. album release. BIG SKY is over an hour long, loaded with melodic and memorable tunes, including the album’s leadoff single, “Stay (with me),” a track which combines an infectious beat with lyrics that deal with newfound love, the beautiful ballad “Little Black Car,” and the rhythmic album opener, “Chasing Paper.”

JODY RAFFOUL’s profile is increasing rapidly. He will be the featured “Artist On The Rise” for the month of September on Windows Media.com. The Ecast Network providing digital music to over 10,000 bars and nightclubs across the country will also be supporting JODY nationwide. Fans will get their first listen of BIG SKY when the album is added as a “Featured Pre-Release” to the Network starting August 20th.

The new video for “Stay (with me)” features a special guest appearance from drummer Ryan Hoyle of Collective Soul and was produced/directed/edited by Robin Davey (Buckcherry, Drowning Pool, The Bastard Fairies, The Canary Effect).

The early accolades for BIG SKY have already begun to pour in. “BIG SKY is the long forgotten sound of a great rock record. What a pleasure to listen to, let alone mix,” says the album senior mix engineer Al Sutton (Kid Rock and Sheryl Crow). “BIG SKY is rock in its purest form - uncut, un-stepped on, with sincerity, power and tremendous skill,” adds the album senior mastering engineer Greg Calbi (John Mayer, U2, Bob Dylan, Once Soundtrack, and Flight of the Conchords).

On Tuesday, September 23rd at 6:30pm, JODY RAFFOUL will be making an in-store appearance at the FYE in the Macomb Mall Shopping Center (located at 32233 Gratiot Avenue, Roseville, MI 48066-1147), where he will be signing BIG SKY and performing live. A few night later, the official BIG SKY CD release party will be held on Thursday, September 25th at 7:00pm at Fifth Avenue in Royal Oak, MI. Admission to this show is by purchasing a copy of BIG SKY at any one of nine participating FYE stores in the local Detroit metro area. A special ‘ticket’ will be printed on the receipt with purchase.

It’s apparent that JODY’s career is about to take off. Any true music lover will not be disappointed with BIG SKY. It’s an album worth the price.

***the focus of MCB for the most part is to provide info on local shows - things to do around town etc....we don't really do reviews (we leave that up to you to decide if a band sucks or an artist is great - are they any better/worse if someone writes a glowing or horrific review)

We like to pursue the elusive press pass for our photographers and video peeps

I could provide some additional insight but its sounding very bloggy so the point I am getting at here is we give away a bunch of freebies (probably more than any other website around town) and those relationships require a certain back scratching so....without any other explanation we offer up a few non-detroit related posts here or there so we can get more free tickets and CDs to give away....ahh..you know...who cares - here is some free shit to check out from a hot chick with a great voice

SRC Thursdays with Gary Quackenbush - PJ's Lager House - Every Thursday through Sept 2008

This is more of a news item than we usually would post but check back here soon for a video interview with Gary and PJ as they talk about this month long set of shows that are a must see for any hard core detroit music fan.

"Announcing SRC Thursdays with Gary Quackenbush at PJ's Lager House!!!
PJ's Lager House (1254 Michigan Ave, Corktown, Detroit) is pleased announce the start of SRC Thursdays with Gary Quackenbush throughout the month of September!
Quackenbush is a true Detroit rock legend. He is perhaps best known as a founding member and lead guitarist of SRC, a locally based rock band from the late 1960s. SRC began as the joining of two infamous Detroit/Birmingham bands: The Fugitives with brothers Glenn and Gary Quackenbush and The Chosen Few with Scott Richardson.
From 1965 to 1970, the group was a staple at many of Detroit's most legendary rock venues, including The Grande Ballroom and eventually signed with Motown's Rare Earth label. In 1966, the group approached then-Rationals manager Jeep Holland and their first few gigs were played with Richardson to finish the Fugitives' booking commitments.
The first true SRC show was at the Fenton Community Center in early 1967 and they never looked back!Following their debut full-length release on Capitol Records in 1968, SRC began to headline area stages and venues across the Midwest, sharing the stage with practically every regional band of note at the time, including Bob Seger, the Rationals, the MC5 and many others. SRC achieved great popularity in the UK as well as the Midwestern US.
Today, Quackenbush is the owner of SRC Records, and will be performing live at PJ's Lager House every Thursday in September to promote GQ In A Shade of Blue, Quackenbush's first solo record ever. The live show is not to be missed!
GQ will be playing all the SRC hits including "I'm So Glad, "Black Sheep," "Bolero" and many more. Longtime hits such as "Red House," "Summertime," "Thrill Is Gone" and "I'd Rather Go Blind" will be featured, among others. Lots of standards and lots of blues! GQ is a true guitar powerhouse and professional performer—these are Thurdays not to be missed if you care anything for Detroit rock history!"

Bluegrass/Newgrass, Americana/Alt-Country, English/Canadian/Australian

"A breakthrough acoustic Americana trio--from overseas!"

The Greencards--one English fiddler and two Australian singer-instrumentalists--push the boundaries of Americana and bluegrass music, creating a sound that's all their own.

Formed in Austin in 2004, they've toured with Bob Dylan and Willie Nelson. Fiddler Eamon McLoughlin, vocalist Carol Young, and mandolinist Kym Warner are amazing virtuoso talents, but the trio is equally adept at sad, inward-looking numbers that draw from alternative country and folk styles.

"If you like Nickel Creek and the Dixie Chicks--bands that can really play and sing--then you’ll love The Greencards," says Kevin Connor of Austin's KGSR-FM radio.

Fresh from an appearance at the giant Bonnaroo festival in Tennessee, The Greencards have made the transition from newcomers to major talents of the Americana scene.

Get on over to see him in Ann Arbor all weekend if you can for only $10

WILD AT HEART - Tuesday August 19th 2008

Hi Kirk - Here is today's blog - Wild Bill
Bill Kettelhut provides the "blog" to this anti-blog
He has a radio program on WXOU out of Oakland University

Wild At Heart

Did an extra long show today on WXOU 88.3FM (www.wxou.org for those out of
range) and was just sitting around the station trying to get in the mood to
write today’s blog when I realized I better hurry since my Judas
Priest/Motorhead show has an early 4:30PM start time.

I am really looking forward to seeing Motorhead tonight, who are a British metal band started by ex-Hawkwind bassist Lemmy after he got kicked out of the band in 1975. The
band is named after a song Lemmy wrote for Hawkwind, simply entitled
“Motorhead”. The band had a lot of British success with a bunch of great
songs such as “Ace Of Spades”, “No Class” and “Overkill” and has been
getting recent US exposure by doing Triple H’s theme music. Rock On!!!
This will also purge me from going to see the Jordan Sparks/Jesse McCartney
show at the Royal Oak Music Theatre. After this show, along with the Cute Is
What We Aim For and Paramore, I’m starting to feel like I’m auditioning for
‘How To Catch A Predator’, esp with the abundance of young teenage girls. To
be 16 again! Sigh! I’m still also trying to figure out if Jesse’s background
band singing Springfield’s “Jesse’s Girl” is really great marketing or just
plain creepy. I’m siding towards creepy!

Besides hitting a number of concerts, I did do some historical sightseeing.
I have always loved going to the Cranbrook Educational Community, esp the
Science Center, but I have never toured the House on the grounds which I
made the effort to do it this past week. Built in 1908, it is the oldest of
the area’s tourable mansions and was designed by the world famous architect
Albert Kahn. In this area, Kahn designed the Henry Ford’s Bob-Lo Island
dance hall, massive Ford River Rouge Plant, theFisher Building, the Edsel &
Eleanor Ford House, Battle Creek Post Office, The Detroit Newsand numerous
building on the U of M campus (10 of his buildings are recognized by
official Michigan historical markers). The Cranbrook House stands out
because despite Kahn’s unique stylistic voice, George Gough Booth was a
designer in his own right and helped put a little bit of his touch in the
building (such as a stained glass window of him with a fly on his
nose and a phantom George Washington with a fly swatter overhead). Booth
was an avid student of the Arts and Crafts movement and, together, brothers
Ralph and George Booth were major benefactors of the Detroit Institute of
Arts and worked with Scripps to publish the Detroit News. This is a very
beautiful house though one can only tour the main floor. The library itself
makes it worth touring so make sure to take some time before October to tour
it (don’t forget you can get free passes at your local library thanks to
Macy’s). You would like to go on a nice day so you can tour the gardens at a
leisurely pace. Go to www.cranbrook.edu for more information.
I also took a few moments to check out the Natatorium which has swim classes
open to the public and walked around the William Massie house, the first in
a series of ten prefabricated houses designed and constructed by him, which
harkens back to the home designs of the 1950’s. I can’t wait until it opens
for tours later this fall.

WXOU has been doing some events at the Parisian store at the Mall At
Partridge Creek which is still pretty new. While the events are fun, I never
walked the mall before so I did that this past weekend and found a few
surprises. The mall is open-air and has live music in the mall center on
weekends. There is also 2 bocce ball courts, an outdoor play area for the
kids and a MJR theatre. Customers are also allowed to bring their dogs into
the shopping center of which I saw every size and breed. They are "comfort
stations", with water and sanitation supplies for dog owners and some of the
stores will even have treats out for your canine buddies. Make sure to take
them to the Three Dog Bakery which caters to selling treats for their dogs.
The business was started by a guy who had a dog who couldn’t digest a lot of
foods and would make special treats for him which then started evolving to
giving them to friends and neighbors and of course
the rest is history. The treats are also human edible and esp great for
diabetics. The shops are tailored for a bunch of great clothing stores and
some nice restaurants. Fans of Swarovski crystal should check out this store
which has a limited edition crystal rhino (1 of only 8 in the country) and
can be won in a lottery by someone who joins their exclusive club. For more
info, go to http://www.shoppartridgecreek.com.
I also stopped out front at the Nino Salvaggio's grocery store which is a
higher end chain but had some nice samples out, included the new
Margarittaville Lime Flavored Tortilla Chips. They basically tasted like
lime flavored fruit loops so that is an interesting taste sensation. Not
sure what flavored salsa I would recommend!

That’s all for now so feel free to stop by my website
http://www.myspace.com/wildatheart_13 and tune in Thursday for another chance to win
tickets to the Aimee Mann/Squeeze show at Royal Oak Music Theatre on the
29th.

PHOTOS: POETS 4 Change by Cherie Stangis

MCB's Cherie Stangis was over at The Artist Village of Detroit and had this to say about the Poets 4 Change '08 Event

"Poets 4 Change ’08 is a grass roots movement that the Ohio Spoken Word Poetry Community put together to promote political change and voter registration. Several states participated in this movement and the Artist Village Detroit did their part for the state of Michigan by holding an open mic night on Friday, August 15, 2008, sponsored by Oral Funk Poetry Productions. Hosted by Men-Tal, this even featured readings by several local poets. Backed by a blend of blues, jazz and hip hop, these poets spoke about matters near and dear to them.

The Artist Village of Detroit , also known as the Public Art Workz (PAWZ) http://www.publicartworkz.org is a non-profit organization striving to use murals as a way to force change and promote positive thinking within the community.

The Artist Village Detroit also holds an open mic poetry night every Saturday evening from 9 p.m. until 2 a.m. featuring poetry, hip-hop, jazz, singing and live bands."

IT MIGHT GET LOUD - The Dex Romweber Duo

Something to check out from our friends at Bloodshot Records:

IT MIGHT GET LOUD ANNOUNCES WORLD PREMIERE AT TORONTO FILM FESTIVAL IN SEPTEMBER

Jack White Cites Dex Romweber As A Major Influence In New Davis Guggenheim Film
Dex Romweber Duo September Tour Dates Will Get Loud

Rarely can a film penetrate the glamorous surface of rock legends. From Academy Award winning director, Davis Guggenheim (An Inconvenient Truth), It Might Get Loud tells the personal stories, in their own words, of three generations of electric guitar virtuosos - Jimmy Page (Led Zeppelin), The Edge (U2) and Jack White (The White Stripes) who cites Dex Romweber (ex Flat Duo Jets) as a major influence. Avoiding the traditional ‘talking heads’ documentary style, the film captures the guitarists as each explains and demonstrates how he changed the sound of the electric guitar to suit his own distinctive musical style. Concentrating on the artist's musical rebellion, traveling with him to influential locations, provoking rare discussion as to how and why he writes and plays, this film lets you witness intimate moments and hear new music from each artist. The movie revolves around a singular day when Jimmy Page, The Edge and Jack White first met and sat down together to share their stories, teach and play. Shot in London, Dublin, Nashville and Los Angeles, the film has begun generating worldwide industry buzz. To date, the bands of Jimmy Page, The Edge and Jack White have sold more than 500 million albums worldwide. The movie is scheduled to make it’s world premiere at the Toronto Film Festival in September. The Dex Romweber Duo will also kick off a fall tour in September.

One of the most exciting scenes in the movie shows Jimmy Page, The Edge and Jack White are all sitting together talking about their influences. Jimmy Page pulls out a Link Wray record, The Edge pulls out a Sex Pistols record and Jack White pulls out Dex Romwebers’ band Flat Duo Jets Go-Go Harlem Baby record and acknowledges Dex’s influence on his music. It Might Get Loud also contains live footage of Dex playing “Crazy Hazy Kisses” and the Flat Duo Jets song “Frog Went A Courtin” from Go-Go Harlem Baby is also in the films soundtrack. Jack White recently said of Dex Romweber, “Dex Romweber was and is a huge influence on my music. I owned all of his records as a teenager, and was thrilled at the fact that we were able to play together recently on tour. His attitude towards music is remarkable. His songwriting, along with his love of classic American music from the south, be it rockabilly, country or R&B, is one of the best kept secrets of the rock n roll underground."

Dex Romweber is nothing less than an icon of the American music underground. The former frontman for the world famous psycho-surf-rockabilly-garage-punk combo Flat Duo Jets, released his first of nine albums in 1990 to rave reviews worldwide. He starred alongside R.E.M. and The B-52s in the 1987 cult classic film Athens, GA Inside Out. His first national tour in 1990 was as opening act for The Cramps. He was showcased on MTV's The Cutting Edge and 120 Minutes, starred in the Flat Duo Jets videos "Wild Wild Lover" and "Radioactive Man", made a stunning performance on Late Night with David Letterman, and has shared the stage with dozens of other rock icons including Iggy Pop and the White Stripes. The Dex Romweber Duo also features Dex’s celebrated sibling Sara Romweber (Mitch Easter, Lets Active, Snatches of Pink) on drums. The band just recently signed a multi-album deal with Bloodshot Records and the first album will feature duets between Dex and Cat Power, Neko Case and Exene Cervenka and will be released in 2009.

Dreamcruise Weekend 2008

2 of our photographers were hired by GM to cover the Dream Cruise this weekend with their mad photo skillz so expect a batch of killer car photos early next week....there are tons of great events happening along the woodward corridor - good music etc....but in general I usually steer clear of this whole scene every year....I love classic cars - own a 61 chrysler - and in general dig the event but I just dont have the patience to deal with the crowds so instead I will be hitting up other spots this weekend like the Flobots who are playing over at St. Andrews Hall tonight...no cameras for this one - once in a while you have to just kick back and relax so we suggest you do the same - summer is in full swing so take it all in while you can and chill.
Our other MCB contributors will be all over this weekend
I'm in such a great mood today - so look for some posts later on with some freebies
(dont have anything yet but give me a few hours to bust some balls)

A photographer born and raised in Northwest Indiana, he has photographed the landscape of the region to depict the contrast of its industrial might and nature that remains in its midst.

Artist Statement:

Night is when reality comes across more directly without the distractions of normal everyday light and life. The peculiarities of an environment are highlighted and enhanced. At night under streetlights, an environment displays just how odd it is, and in the case of these photographs how inhumane man-made environments tend to be even though they were created with humans in mind.Northwest Indiana, often referred to as 'The Region,' is a conglomerate of fifteen or so cities where nature takes a backseat to what humans have created. Here nature is something you do or someplace you go - it is not something you live with. It is a huge area with very few natural boundaries and where concrete connects everything.
Upcoming Thursday Views:
Gallery Hours: Thursday 7-10pm, Saturday 12-6:00 pm, or by appointment.

EIGHT '86 ART COMPANY HELPS MAKE WISHES COME TRUE THROUGH FUNDRAISER FOR MAKE-A-WISH FOUNDATION.
The Eight '86 Art Company presents "A Fair in the City," on August 24, 2008.
To help raise funds for the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Michigan- a nonprofit organization that grants wishes to children with life threatening illnesses. The Metro Detroit area has always been considered rich in history, culture, and creativity.
As the next generation take more prominent roles in our community, it is up to us to utilize our skills and talents to not only better our city, but to also reaffirm people's belief in its potential.
The Eight '86 Art Company understands that responsibility, and is holding an event entitled "A Fair in the City," with proceeds going to benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Michigan.
The event will take place August 24, 2008 at the Magic Bag in Ferndale. The night will consist of an art show featuring diverse work from artists from all across the metro Detroit area. All work on display will be for sale. Commission taken from any work sold will be donated to the Make-A-Wish Foundation, and the remainder of the sale will go to the artist. The art show will followed by performances from Jason Longuski, Storms in May, and recently off "Warped Tour" Atavan.
Taken at the door will be a $10 donation to the Make-A-Wish Foundation. This allows the event to not only promote local art and music, but also the admirable work of the Make-A-Wish Foundation. "What I find exciting about this event is that it simultaneously promotes local art and music as well as the admirable work of the Make-A-Wish Foundation. We feel privileged to be working with the Make-A-Wish Foundation, and are inspired by their unwavering commitment to the lives of these children and their families." Said Alen Catolico, Director of the Eight '86 Art Company.

WILD AT HEART - Monday August 11th 2008

Hi Kirk - Here is today's blog - Wild Bill
Bill Kettelhut provides the "blog" to this anti-blog
He has a radio program on WXOU out of Oakland University

Wild At Heart

RIP – to both Bernie Mac and Isaac Hayes. Bernie, best known for his TV series “The Bernie Mac Show”, died of complications of his respiratory disease at the age of 50. A great stand-up, who appeared in such movies as Bad Santa and the Ocean’s 11 series, recently told Letterman that he was thinking of retiring so he could enjoy his life a little bit. Just goes to prove you need to live life to the fullest because you never know what will happen. Isaac passed on a mere 10 days before his birthday at the age of 65. He grew up in the cotton fields of Covington but was singing in church at the tender age of 5. He learned to play piano, flute and sax and started recording in 1967 with Stax Records. He is perhaps best known for his Academy Award nominated soundtrack for Shaft (the single “Theme From Shaft” won for best song along with 3 Grammys), of which he also had a cameo as a bartender in the film. He put out a number of
great records during these years and had continued to be active in recent years (he played the chef in “South Park” along with appearances in Stargate SG-1 and “Hustle & Flow”). It makes you think why these great people pass away when people like Castro and Charles Manson seem to live forever.
I found out Hayes had passed away when I stumbled into the 7th Annual River Raisin Jazz Festival. The headliner was Detroit native Ray Parker Jr and his band made the announcement and broke into an unrehearsed version of Shaft which rocked. Ray put on a great show of jazz, R&B and rock including such hits as “Jack And Jill”, “The Other Woman” and for the kids, “Ghostbusters”. I hadn’t realized he was so proficient, having 12 Top 40 Hits as well as writing songs and doing session work for Chaka Khan, New Edition, Diana Ross and Stevie Wonder. Despite the horrors of Detroit driving, I’m glad I made the trip.
While in Monroe, MI, I did partake of some of the local history. The city itself is named after our 5th President, James Monroe who visited the area in 1817. Along with being the home of La-Z-Boy, it is best down as Monroeis known for its ties to General George Armstrong Custer who spent much of his boyhood there with his half-sister and his brother-in-law. At St Mary’s Park where the festival was held, they have a giant bronze statue of Custer and they have a great exhibit dedicated to him at the Monroe County Historical Museum. The museum houses a nice display of artifacts from the 18th and 19th centuries that pertain to Southeast Michigan and has a new exhibit dedicated to sewing. Through a grant, they are replicating up to 40 War of 1812 era women's garments along with 15 Native American women's trade clothing, and they are using the sewing equipment of that era to do this. Definitely worth a stop if you are in the area. Go to
www.co.monroe.mi.us for more information. Make sure to ask the staff at the front desk about the history of the area as they are all very knowledgeable. You can start asking about the history of the Yellow Ribbons (popularized by the John Wayne movie and the song by Tony Orlando and Dawn).
I also spent some time at the Monroe County Labor History Museum which is right around the corner. Not overly impressive though the current exhibit on child labor is important. The museum is more educational in function than having actual exhibits. If you would like more info, go to www.monroelabor.orgwhich does have some nice online exhibits.
This morning, I had singer Tori Sparks on the show who will be performing with the awesomely cool Emily Rose at the Lager House on Tuesday Aug 12th. It should be a great show, so go to www.torisparks.comand check out her songs, videos, etc. For those who can’t make that show, she will be doing an in store performance and signing at Border’s in Dearborn. She is touring the Midwest by herself, so help support this wonderful singer and check her out.
Some upcoming cool shows include Paramore @ Freedom Hill on 12th, Steely Dan @ Pine Knob (DTE) on 15th, Cute Is What We Aim For @ Magic Stick on 16th and the O’Jays will be headlining the African World Festival down at Heart Plaza this upcoming weekend (esp if you want to stay away from the Woodward Dream Cruise traffic). Also, Weezer just announced tour dates for the Palace.
That is all for now. Keep listening to Wild Bill on www.wxou.org or check out my myspace page at myspace.com/wildatheart_13.

SUMMER SMASH - The CAID - Thur/Sat Aug 21st,22nd,23rd

The Little Festival That Could
Creatively controversial cultural hub stays the course in Detroit with festival to benefit area bands and musicians

The art institute that Detroit police attempted to shut down just a few months ago remains open to serve the community, according to the nonprofit mission driven organization. What was reported as excessive force by witnesses at an early morning police raid with shot guns, commando uniforms, masks and language unbecoming of a peace officer, has not hindered the organizations commitment to the arts in Detroit.

The Contemporary Art Institute of Detroit (CAID) recently announced the return (after a one year hiatus) of Summer Smash – a popular local music festival that started in 1999. The three day event will take place at the CAID August 21st through 23rd and will feature some of the most talked about local music artists in the city including The Dead Bodies, Silverghost, The Four Hour Friends and The Friendly Foes among others.
“This is an important event with everyone volunteering their time and talents to the cause,” says CAID board member, Aaron Timlin. 100% of the festival profits will go directly to support creative programming at CAID. The all volunteer nonprofit expects the festival to go off without a hitch. “We have dotted our I’s and crossed all our T’s”, says festival director Laura Witkowski. “CAID has filed a petition with City Council. Professional security and legal support will be on hand during the festival to ensure our guests and members’ civil rights and personal dignity is not violated by anyone.”

Since its inception almost 10 years ago, Summer Smash has doubled as a benefit for a worthy cause, and this year's event continues that tradition in a unique way. "Instead of using this event as a way to raise funds for the general operating budget or someone’s salary, all the profits will go to a special grant fund for Detroit music and performance artists," says Timlin who volunteers for CAID, now serving on the board of directors. "The connection between CAID and the music scene in Detroit is strong, and we felt this was a great way to further build that connection."
The organization will invite musicians and performers to apply for grant funds that could cover costs for things such as touring, recording, equipment and anything else that may further their creative endeavors.

The mission of CAID is to foster and promote the essential link between contemporary arts and contemporary society through its exhibitions, performances, critical and public discourse and the funding of contemporary arts and art related activities. Formed on Valentine’s Day of 1979, CAID moved into the building formerly occupied by detroit contemporary in 2004, its first permanent home, which it purchased a year later. “I am really excited to see Summer Smash return to Rosa Parks Blvd where it has been held for most of its life,” says festival founder Stephen Cramer. “Laura, Aaron and, festival creative director who assembled the amazing line up, Alissa Lincoln, have all done a tremendous job to ensure Summer Smash 2008 be a must attend festival in Detroit.”

A complete festival schedule is available at www.myspace.com/summersmash and www.thecaid.org/summersmash.
Tickets are $16.00 for the entire three days or $5 for Thursday and $8 per day for Friday and Saturday.
Tickets may be purchased online or at the door.
Tax deductible contributions will be accepted online and during the festival to further support the cause.
For more information, contact CAID at info@thecaid.org or (313) 899.CAID (2243).

RAY LAMONTAGNE ANNOUNCES NORTH AMERICAN TOUR DATES;
Tour In Support of Gossip In The Grain Now Due Out October 14 On RCA Records

Ray LaMontagne, one of the most distinct and recognizable voices in music, announced his first North American tour in support of his new album Gossip In The Grain due out October 14 on RCA Records. The six week tour starts September 30 in Indianapolis.

October 14 is the new release date for the album as LaMontagne, struck by inspiration, went back into the studio last week to record additional material. The new album can be pre-ordered at www.raylamontagne.com and the new track listing is below.

1. You Are The Best Thing
2. Let It Be Me
3. Sarah
4. I Still Care For You
5. Winter Birds
6. Meg White
7. Hey Me, Hey Mama
8. Henry Nearly Killed Me (It’s A Shame)
9. A Falling Through
10. Gossip In The Grain

Recorded with returning producer, Ethan Johns in Box, England, and touching upon a range of styles and musical settings– spanning pastoral folk, railroad blues, front porch country, and plangent balladry – Gossip In The Grain proves to be his most creative and emotionally expansive collection to date.

Whereas LaMontagne’s two previous albums, Trouble and Till The Sun Turns Black, were largely solo affairs, with Johns serving as multi-tasking instrumentalist, Gossip In The Grain sees him joined by members of his touring band, bassist Jennifer Condos and guitarist Eric Heywood (with Johns largely handling drum duties). Along with his band members, LaMontagne is also joined on two tracks – “A Falling Through” and “I Still Care For You” – by singer/songwriter Leona Naess.

"Thirty Tigers is proud to present another AAA singer/songwriter, Matthew Perryman Jones. Think Bono meets Coldplay meets Pete Yorn. Matthew’s music has already been recognized in LA as perfect material for TV (he’s already had placements on Kyle XY, Private Practice, Eli Stone and The Hills...with more to come this fall), and his fan base is rapidly growing with each placement. The song “Save You” is sure to get Coldplay/U2 fans in the spirit. Check it out... The radio version of “Save You” was mixed by F. Reid Shippen (Matt Kearney, Death Cab) and early response has been great.

To get the word out about his new album, MPJ is giving away his last record, Throwing Punches in the Dark via Noisetrade (www.noisetrade.com).

Wild at Heart - Tuesday August 5th 2008

Here is today's blog - Bill
Bill Kettelhut provides the "blog" to this anti-blog
He has a radio program on WXOU out of Oakland University

Wild At Heart

I am still recovering from my busy weekend so pardon myself for turning in my weekly Monday blog on Tuesday.

I had a great musical weekend, starting off with Neil Diamond on Thursday who is proving that he is a great crowd pleasing entertainer. He played a few songs off his new album (Home Before Dark) which is his first #1 album which is amazing considering his career of 37 hit songs since 1966. I was excited to hear some of my favorite songs (Cherry Cherry, I Thank the Lord for the Night Time, Brother Love's Traveling Salvation Show, Kentucky Woman) and the fact that he didn’t play some of my least favorite songs (sorry Heartlight). It is also nice seeing that most of his band has been with him since the 70’s.

I changed gears on Friday for the H2O/Rancid show which rocked Clutch Cargos. Local punk band the Red Shift started the night off in fine form. I spent most of the night talking to some punk fans from Cleveland who drove all the way here to see the show and they were telling me that the punk scene in Cleveland sucks nowadays and they end up going to places like Chicago or Buffalo to see any of the cool punk bands (makes me learn to appreciate the scene here a little more).

I went to a couple of oldies show after that with Hippifest and the Golden Boys. I mainly went to Hippifest to see Badfinger (which only played their 4 hits before leaving the stage) and legendary Cream guitarist Jack Bruce (who actually put on a wonderful set of Cream favorites like I Feel Free). It is a fun show to people watch and wonder which people are dressing up and which ones really still dress that way. The Golden Boys was a show to see three legendary performers before they pass away. I still don’t get the appeal of Fabian, but Frankie Avalon put on an enjoyable set (even playing his song from the musical Grease). It was Bobby Rydell who really tore things up. Rydell is a performer who put up a number of hit songs like “Volare” and “Forget Him” (19 in all) and still has the vocal ability to pull it off. The guys also have a great banter between them which just makes one nostalgic.

Last night I went to see We Are Scientists who are wonderful guys. I got a very scattered interview in their normal, not sure what we can serious, style. That interview will air on WXOU 88.3FM (live streaming on http://www.wxou.org/) on Thursday morning between 8-10AM.

Before the show, I was wishing a had a video camera because I could of got some cool youtube worthy video of a couple of Detroit bums fighting. The cops showed up and broke it up. However, after they left they went at it again. At one point one of them went into a store. The other one followed and immediately got thrown out about five feet. It was better than an episode of cops!

This week I am looking forward to Rod Stewart/Bryan Adams at Pine Knob (I just can’t say DTE) and Idina Menzel at the GEM on Thursday (theatre star who played the wicked witch in Wicked).

The Concours d’Elegance went over well on Sunday. The weather held up well and I met a lot of nice people. As soon as I figure out how to download the pictures from my new digital camera to the computer, I will put some of them up on this blog site and my homepage, www.myspace.com/wildatheart_13

The show this year had a ton of unbelievable cars of which I really enjoyed the Mitchell concept cars, the Aerocar and a gorgeous yellow Duesenberg racing car. Fingers crossed that the pictures came out OK.EXTREME and KING’s X @ Emerald Theatre on Aug 8th.

If you would like to win a pair of tickets to go see this show on Friday, send me an email to doramu13@yahoo.com with the header EXTREME and you could get lucky.

The first email before midnight on Wednesday will get a pair of tickets to the show. Extreme was rock band from the late 80’s that had a #1 hit in 1991 with the ballad “More Than Words”. Heck the show is worth it for the opportunity to see a great indie hard rock band like King’s X.
I’ll be waiting.

Hopefully, next week I’ll be back on track and have a good weekend.

FREE DOWNLOAD: Toy Tugboats

Kenny Florence may not yet be of legal age to buy beer, but he has a clear musical vision that he portrays in his musical project Sunfold.

Toy Tugboats is the culmination of years of musical exploration and experience, resulting in a diverse blend of jazz, folk, pop, and rock.

LISTEN & DOWNLOAD: "SARA THE AMERICAN WINTER"

Sharing the same members as North Carolina’s Annuals, and being the fifth release on the collective’s Terpsikhore label, Sunfold utilize a collective approach to achieve an impressive level of comfort within each realm it chooses to invade.

While Annuals is praised for frontman Adam Baker's uncanny pop sensibility combined with his boundless sonic ambition, Florence's approach through Sunfold is more of a controlled and formulaic thought process, deliberately applied to different musical styles.
Sunfold has been captivating audiences across North Carolina and plans are underway to do the same around the US this summer.

Tour the Fillmore Detroit - Preservation Wayne -

Saturday August 9, 2008

Tour of The Fillmore Theater (formerly State Theater)
$40 per person

"Join us behind the scenes for an exclusive look inside seven historic venues that comprise one of America’s most important collections of early 20th Century theaters. As Preservation Wayne’s biggest walking tour of the year, the annual Theater District tour showcases the amazing architecture of downtown theaters in Detroit’s premier entertainment district.

Now in its 20th year, the tour has helped promote the entertainment district and has seen six theaters, including the Fox and the Century, restored since it began. Led by theater history buffs who enjoy sharing their knowledge of the buildings, business and anecdotes, the tour illuminates the importance of preserving our historic architecture. While the Madison, the Adams and the United Artists are no longer accessible to the public, the remnants of the magnificent Michigan Theatre are still visible above the 3-story parking deck where scenes from movies like "8 Mile" and "The Island" were filmed.

Tour groups are limited in size and depart every half hour from 9:00 AM to 11:30 AM. Registration and tours begin in the lobby of the State Theater on Woodward Avenue, one block south of the Fox. Parking is available at the Fox Garage, located just north of the Fox Theater, on Montcalm, directly west of Hockeytown Café. Please arrive at least 15 minutes before your scheduled departure time.

Tickets: $40 per person; Payment by cash, check, and MasterCard or Visa is accepted. Tickets include a boxed lunch at the Detroit Opera House. Reservations are required.

Please note: Tours usually last between four and four and one half hours. Tours depart rain or shine, so please check ahead and dress appropriately. Call us at (313) 577-7674 us for more information."
