2500 posts on MOTORCITYBLOG

thats right we hit our 2500th post here on the MCB

so since we are such a "rah rah" site where we don't post many opinions and try to help promote ALL types of music and bands and artists and we give away all kinds of free stuff -send photographers to shows and do our brand of video interviews we thought ww would let off a little ...you know...steam and give a hearty FUCK OFF YOU PRICKS! to anyone that feels they might just possibly deserve something like that....you know who you are you freaking detards.

To all the others (mostly the readers of MCB) we say hey! Thanks!

Speaking of 2500 - don't you miss that place? If you even knew they closed the joint a few months ago - The 2500 Club was one of our favorites - booking punk and hardcore bands - serving Black Label in a can....I had my bachelor party there and hired Hell's Belles to dance for the night....Santarchy 2006 where 40 santas and 1 jewish Elf were gambling on the pool table with a Dreidel - catching Empty Arms acoustic show - the place was great.

Shut down for illegal activites....you break the law you get burned.

Anyway - 2500 posts...moving on.

UPCOMING BOOK SIGNING: Derek Hess @ Lucky Monkey Tattoo in Ann Arbor -

Please God Save Us Derek Hess & Kent Smith @ Lucky Monkey Tattoo Parlour
For Book Signing in Ann Arbor
Friday, October 24th 7:30-10 PM

Former Detroiter, CCS standout and internationally renown artist Derek Hess, along with Cleveland politician Kent Smith will celebrate the release of their new book, the socio-political art tome, Please God Save Us, with a release party and book signing at the Lucky Monkey Tattoo Parlour in Ann Arbor ONE NIGHT ONLY, on Friday, October 24, 2008.

The party will run from 7:30 PM to 10 PM, offering attendees the opportunity to not only purchase Please God Save Us, but also to ask questions and share thoughts with both Hess and Smith who will be in attendance. The book, which was officially released on July 4th, is a collection of politically charged art works by Hess and complimenting text by Smith created to challenge the current ideals of society and create awareness of both political and religious issues inundating government today.

The pieces were first introduced to the public at a local art show in December of 2006 and have since taken on a life of their own, drawing both praise and criticism. Addressing a variety of topics including Stem Cell research, the war in Iraq, the Christian right and the environment among others, the book, according to it’s authors, is intended to “educate and inspire its readers whether or not they agree with either the art or the words”. Hess, has been referred to as the “Michaelangelo of Rock Art”, Hess no longer produces rock posters, but incorporates his Humanist vision into his work, as well as being the namesake of the incredibly popular hard rock tour, “Strhess Fest” and his own Strhess clothing line .

Please God Save Us, is published by Hess’ own Strhess Press is 112 pages and will retail for $25.

The Asteroids Galaxy Tour - Coming to Detroit soon

Digging the videos and sounds for sure... worth a look and freebies on the way

"Traveling at Lightening Speed, Soon to Touch Down in America!
Formed less than a year ago, The Asteroids Galaxy Tour is heading for fame at a speed even they didn’t expect. The band, led by Lars Iversen and Mette Lindberg, has barely begun to share their music with anyone outside of their hometown of Copenhagen, and yet their first UK single, "The Sun Ain't Shining No More", is already tickling the ears of delighted radio programmers across the pond. Another track, “The Golden Age,” has mysteriously popped up on the playlist for “Passport Approved,” a syndicated radio show broadcasting weekly on Indie 103.1 (Los Angles), WXPN and other “tastemaker” stations around the country. If that weren’t enough, their song “Around the Bend” is currently being featured in ads for the new iPod Touch
(http://www.apple.com/ipodtouch/gallery/ads/), and is available now on iTunes.Stylistically The Asteroids Galaxy Tour is hard to pin down, except to say that they throw one hell of a party – which may be why those music-loving folks at Apple chose them to help sell what’s being touted as “the funnest iPod ever.” Sun-drenched pop melodies collide with Technicolor dreams, anchored by the band’s shared love of the classic soul stylings of Marvin, Stevie and Sly that can be heard in the horns snaking through “Around The Bend” as well as the slinky “The Sun Ain’t Shining No More”, for which they have made a spectacular video. Both of these tracks will be featured on a digital EP to be released October 21 in the United States, followed by debut full-length album in early 2009.
Although Mette and Lars are the core of The Asteroids Galaxy Tour, the band grows to a six-piece live, including trumpet and sax players, clavinet sounds, a drummer and a guitarist. The band will be coming to the United States this fall to play some early shows for their newfound American friends."

FREE MP3: MC Frontalot's "Final Boss":

CLICK the pic for a free mp3

"The Godfather of Nerdcore Rap is at it again, bringing his parsecs of knowledge to your cochlea with his newest album, Final Boss. Featuring guest spots from Glen Phillips (Toad the Wet Sprocket), Jonathan Coulton and Wil Wheaton, Final Boss is unabashedly geek-tastic. MC Frontalot holds forth on topics ranging from cryptozoology (“Scare Goat”) to improper use of punctuation (“Tongue-Clucking Grammarian”) to a new dance based on a grand-dame (“Wallflowers”). The album takes its title from Front’s track of the same name, featured in the video game “On the Rainslick Precipice of Darkness” from the makers of the popular webcomic, Penny Arcade.

Front's chameleon-like adaptability is on full display with the release of Final Boss. Tongue-twisting lyrics lie over swathes of eclectic samples and beats from a wide variety of genres. A true master of ceremonies, Frontalot ushers us through his multi-faceted offerings with wit and aplomb.

MC Frontalot, also known by his given name Damian Hess, pioneered nerdcore, a subgenre of hip-hop performed by nerds for nerds. Hess recorded his first Frontalot rhyme in 1999 (before an adoring audience of Robotech figurines), subsequently posting music to his own website and SongFight. The independently produced tracks earned him a devoted audience, including the founders of Penny Arcade who named Front their “official MC” in 2002 and invited him to play at their annual Expo. In 2005 he released his first album, Nerdcore Rising. One year later, Front embarked on his first US tour with bandmates G minor 7, Blak Lotus and The Categorical Imperative and filmmaker Negin Farsad. The material that Farsad came away with was eventually turned into the prize-winning documentary “Nerdcore Rising: The Movie” which premiered to rave reviews at SXSW 2008. After the release of Final Boss, Frontalot looks forward to touring this fall. "

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

There are vampires in Hamtramck.
When the shadow of vampirism looms over the city of Hamtramck, Michigan, an old-world ethnic enclave completely enclosed within the city borders of Detroit, it's up to two government-sanctioned slayers to cleanse the neighborhood without the public ever knowing. Tracking the slayers are three nasty/sexy vamp kittens out for revenge. And that's just for starters.

The U.S. Government once created a virus to exterminate all vampires. The virus annihilated most of the vampires. As with any virus, a small percentage survived relatively unaffected or chronically afflicted with pain. Several more survived barely to live out their days as blood junkies (depowered vampires that have become a glorified rat problem). The general public hasn't reported a sighting of a supernatural for four years.

Four years, whether you live for seventy years or seven hundred years, is a very long time to lay low. Tired of waiting, a trio of vampyre vixens kidnaps the daughter of a city commissioner and turn her into a blood junkie since they were tired of hiding in pain from the virus. Meanwhile, recent attacks by blood junkies made going out at night in Hamtramck a bit dangerous. Naturally, in the backrooms of nondescript buildings, those in power make secret deals with vampire slayers to secretly handle the vampire problem. Feeling the heat, our trio of relatively unaffected vampire girls attempt to work together to also handle the "vampire problem" and save their hides.

See the drama, the danger, who lived to see another day (or night) and how they survived in this modern vampire drama soon!

Drive in Movie from DISNEY - 696/Main Royal Oak - Fri Oct 3rd

Disney is coming to downtown Royal Oak on October 3rd, 2008
“Family Fun Night”

1.) A free drive-in Disney movie for the public on the property located at I-696 and Main Street.

2.) Extended hours for the downtown businesses with food sampling at downtown restaurants.

3.) A kid’s castle at the Fresard Bump Shop location (6th and Main).

4.) Free parking from 5:00PM to 8:00PM.

Stopping in 30 cities nationwide, Disney reps will be stationed at two high-tech kiosks at Third near Main, and at Fifth and Washington around 4-6 p.m. They'll give visitors a chance to win a celebration vacation to a Disney park and to register for a special birthday surprise. They'll also hand out free 15-inch Mickey Mouse balloons to the kids.

Overcome by Magic Kingdom fairy dust, several downtown business owners, with help from the Downtown Development Authority and the Royal Oak Chamber of Commerce, have planned a "Family Fun Night" event from 5-8 p.m. to coincide with the Disney visit.

Kids are invited to come dressed as their favorite Disney character and stop by the inflatable castle at Sixth and Main (Jim Fresard's Body Shop lot) for face painting and a coloring contest. Stores will be open until 8 p.m., and many merchants will offer discount savings. There will be samplings of the city's cuisine and special offers during a walking restaurant tour, plus parking will be free throughout downtown and in the parking structures from 5-8 p.m. Families can wrap up the evening at a free drive-in Disney movie starting at dusk on the city's undeveloped property at Main and I-696 across from the Detroit Zoo. For more info, call the Chamber of Commerce at (248) 547-4000 or the DDA at (248) 246-3286.

WILD AT HEART - Monday Sept 29th 2008

Here is today's blog - Bill
Bill Ketelhut provides the "blog" to this anti-blog
He has a radio program on WXOU out of Oakland University and scores with all the ladies...

Wild At Heart

For someone who doesn’t normally like rap (at least current rap), I had a great time at the N.E.R.D./Common show at the Fillmore last night and I will be looking forward to seeing LL Cool J opening for Janet Jackson on their rescheduled Oct 28th date. However, I hated Plastic Little who opened for Santogold this weekend. I guess you can’t have everything.

I also enjoyed the Delerium show at Royal Oak Music Theatre. They are a side project for Front Line Assembly who switches between dark ethereal ambient, voiceless industrial soundscapes and electronic pop music. It was nice seeing Leigh Nash helping on vocal duties though she didn’t do any Sixpence None The Richer songs. I also got to hang with Elsianne Caplette (in her sexy dark blue eye shadow) of the electronic duo Elsiane. She grew up in Peru though is currently living in Montreal. Her rich voice blends elements of jazz and classical over an electrical soundscape and their debut album “Hybrid” is worth checking out (I play it frequently on my show on www.wxou.org ). Check out their stuff on www.elsiane.com .

This should be a good music and movie week. Staring off, WXOU is sponsoring a movie at the Uptown Palladium called “Sex Drive” so stop by the station for passes (basement of the Oakland Center on OU campus). The movie is about a high school senior who goes on a cross-country road trip to hook up with a girl he met online.

In theaters, we have a couple of new films. Chuck Palahniuk gained a lot of attention for his novel (and subsequent film) "Fight Club". I never read the book and I thought the movie was just a little bit average than most. However, most of my friends loved the movie and are very excited about his new movie, "Choke". Directing his first feature is actor Clark Gregg who you might remember from films like Hoot or Iron Man (he plays Lord High Charlie in this film). The film stars Sam (Green Mile, Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy) Rockwell as Victor, is a sex addict who works as a reenactor of Colonial Times. Not an overly social or likeable guy, he is a con man who intentionally chokes himself on food in restaurants to get money from his rescuers. This money then goes to support his mother (Anjelica Huston) in an institution. Victor had a strange childhood, seemingly on the run with his counterculture mom (breaking animals out of zoos, etc) and wants to find out who his dad is before she is too far gone. However, she barely recognizes him when he visits which complicates matters. Things start to change in his life when he meets a nurse who he actually starts to care about and might help him get his life back. The film has some great characters and some uniquely dark comic moments which make this film to me, a superior film to Fight Club (though I expect I might be alone in that). This is not a film for kids so don't take them. I like Victor's journey and enjoyed everything from his best friend dating a stripper, the morons at the Colonial reenactment site, the crazy women at the hospital, etc. The film has a lot of true moments and I do recommend it. Grade: B+.

Also for action buffs, there is Eagle Eye, the new thriller by director DJ Caruso (Disturbia, The Salton Sea) and starring Shia (Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull) LaBeouf and Michelle Monaghan. The two portray a young man and a single mother who are framed by a mysterious organization and forced to carry out orders that might lead into one of the biggest terrorist threats the US has ever faced. The film starts with an assassination attempt on a potential terrorist and while everyone, including the president, calls for the mission to go ahead, the Secretary of Defense (Michael Chiklis) agrees with the abort recommendation which is overruled. It turns out to be only civilians killed and retaliatory bombing are carried out in response. Meanwhile, slacker Jerry Shaw (Shia LaBeouf) returns home from his brother’s funeral to find his apartment filled with a large amount of weapons, explosives, and forged documents. He receives a phone call from an unknown woman, who explains that the FBI are about to apprehend him in thirty seconds and that he must escape. He ends up caught and Agent Thomas Morgan (Billy Bob Thornton) and Air Force Office of Special Investigations Special Agent Zoe Perez (Rosario Dawson) end up on the case determined to find out who he is working for. Soon, after an amazing escape, Jerry meets up with single mother Rachel Holloman (Michelle Monaghan) whose son has been threatened. The two of them go on a rollercoaster ride trying to figure out what there mission is and how to avoid the FBI. Their task turns out to be involved in the assassination of the President but who is pulling the strings? There is also a supercomputer, ARIA, which is a supercomputer (think Colossus the Forbin Project meets HAL) designed to stop terrorists that seems to be involved. Not a bad film though you really need to suspend disbelief for some of these scenes. This is either a “love it or leave it” type of film. Well, I guess I can say I like it with a Grade: C since the acting is decent enough to make the impossible parts entertaining.

I also spent some time at the Cranbrook Institute of Science for their new exhibit: Bats – Myth and Mystery. Taking advantage of their association with the Bat Zone, this exhibit is designed to help dispel some of the myths about bats and show us how important they really are by helping control insect populations and pollinating flowers (yes, like bees, they also help in this regard). There are hands-on interactive exhibits such as being able to listen like a bat using a pair of oversized, electronic, bat-shaped ears or practicing echolocation by shouting into a cave to determine its size. There are also displays of various bat species and my favorite, a series of bronze bat busts where you can how intricate their specialized features really are. Don’t forget, they also have live bats and guides to answer any questions you may have about these fascinating creatures. Make sure you get their early since the exhibit closes one hour before the museum to facilitate clean-up. You can also go over to the Bat Zone and take in some of the other nocturnal species on display such as a sloth, sugar gliders and various species of owl. The exhibit will be going on until Jan. 4, 2009 and will be an esp nice place for Halloween travelers. The exhibit is free with admission to the Center and is presented by the Organization for Bat Conservation and Cranbrook Institute of Science.

For more information, you can visit www.batconservation.org or www.science.cranbrook.edu .

For sports fans, the Detroit Pistons will be having an open practice at the O-rena on the campus of Oakland University on Thurs, Oct 2nd @ 6:30PM. According to Ryan Hooper, this will be a great chance for fans to get a good look at the Pistons who are dedicated to win this season to make up for the last couple of years getting sent out early. They are committed to bring a championship back to Detroit and feel this team is up for the task. Also after splitting games with the New York Liberty, the girls have a chance to make the finals for the 3rd season in a row with a win tonight as they play at Eastern Michigan (due to the fact that Weezer is at the Palace). The winner will go on to face the San Antonio Silver Stars who defeated the Los Angeles Sparks 2-1. Go Shock and bring home another trophy.

If you are looking for something else to do this weekend, don’t forget James Taylor will be putting on a free show at Border’s Bookstore in downtown Ann Arbor on Thursday @ 7PM. Recorded live with his full band in a barn in Massachusetts that was transformed into a studio, Covers is a treasury of songs James Taylor has performed live over the years, but never recorded. It is a significant work which pays tribute to classic American songs from Broadway to Nashville, Detroit to Memphis and across all boundaries. You will need to get their early since you will need a wristband to get in, but it is free.

Well, have a good weekend and thanks to everyone who stopped by at our WXOU fundraiser at the Crofoot last Friday. It was a great time and the Wild Years put on a wonderful show. Make sure to check out www.myspace.com/wildatheart_13 for more information on other events in my life.

FREE TSHIRT & CD: Magic Bag Ferndale // // Friendly Foes "Born Radical"

First and foremost I want to thank Jamie McCarthy for wasting more than a few hours of our time yesterday - 2 MCB folks waiting for him - we had a request for video interview/photos etc...for the SPIN show and it just didnt work out....so instead of getting jerked off even more (fitting considering the history of the Magic Bag - whose staff by the way were very cool and can sling the drinks faster than most) we took off and headed over to the Friendly Foes CD Release show over at Berkley Front.

turns out there was a good reason for the mixup - so what the hell - shit happens // besides - who the hell are we?? the guy was having a CD release show and probably had a list of things to so long to do that there was no room on the sheet for MCB - the fews songs we managed to catch from Jamie had the really had the crowd going but we left anyway

back to FF Show: The band was tighter than hell - I mean REALLY tight - they must have been rehearsing this record non-stop for months because for the 3 songs I stuck around for there wasnt even room to gasp for air. Solid stuff. We had a photographer shooting and a big shout out to the band who managed to find time during their CD release show to meet with our photographer for a few candids. pics to follow soon from cherie stangis

"FILM AND MUSIC: CARTUNE XPREZ
WITH LIVE PERFORMANCES BY CARJACK! AND HOOLIGANSHIP
admission $7
all ages

Cartune Xprez is a annual touring multi-media film and music event organized by Portland, Oregon electronic music and art duo, Hooliganship. The tour features a 70 minute festival of collected short videos by cutting edge artists from around the world. Artists screening works in this year's Cartune Xprez tour will be; Paper Rad, Bruce Bickford, Adrian Freeman, Shana Moulton, Takeshi Murata, and more.

Carjack! a Detroit based one-man band antagonistically playing with the 80's, by using synthesizers, guitars and electronics to deconstruct popular music into a street-worn blend of grimy, throbbing electro and high energy Detroit rock ‘n roll.

Hooliganship are a bizarre spectacle of a band who create a live soundtrack, on synthesizers and bass guitar, for the 3D cartoons that they themselves screen, create and appear in as central characters. "

Mexican Summer Vinyl Club

We thought this was pretty cool...

"In the spirit of the record club resurgence, Mexican Summer finds a cozy spot at the forefront alongside fellow labels Sub Pop and Merge (talk about great company!) Launched in September of 2008, Mexican Summer releases will all be pressed in very limited quantities and will also be available for download, bringing a musical and visual experience to music lovers and collectors that want more than just a tune to consume.

One of the exciting aspects of the club is that it gives fans an opportunity to receive vinyl on a subscription basis (at a discount to purchasing at retail) and at a select group of exclusive indie retailers across the country. 2-3 albums will be released every other month in various formats (12", 7", Picture Disc, etc) and all records will be beautifully packaged, hand numbered, pressed on high quality virgin vinyl and include a download card.

There will also be bonus gifts available only to members which include slip mats, tote bags, and many more stylish treats.

Subscriptions are available via the Mexican Summer website at

Opening Reception // Utopian Visions - Arab American National Museum - Thur Sept 25th

Have you ever dreamed of a better, more perfect world? The word “utopia” represents a grand vision for an ideal society, especially in its social, political, and moral aspects.
This imaginative concept reflects the human desire for civic improvement and perfection.

In Utopian Visions, running from September 25, 2008 through March 29, 2009 at the Arab American National Museum, four artists of Arab descent, all women, each conceive their own vision of a more perfect place. The exhibition, in the Main Floor Gallery, is free with Museum admission.

The works created by these artists – Rima Al-Awar, Rana Chalabi, Roula Ayoub and Emna Zghal – draw upon disparate forms of inspiration, ranging from nature to poetry to spiritual belief, challenging the viewers to consider their own interpretations of utopia. (see artist biographies and statements below).

“This exhibit is a remarkable medley of color, texture and imagery that evokes our universal yearning for a more perfect world,” says AANM Curator of Collections Suzy Adra Mazloum, who led the development of Utopian Visions. “It also encourages our viewers to reflect on their own personal visions of utopia and share them with their fellow visitors – in a very real way, our viewers will enhance this exhibit as it continues to evolve over the next six months.”

With four very different and creative artists participating and coming from disparate locations – Toronto, Cairo, Beirut and New York City – there are many interesting aspects to this exhibit.
A singular component is a series of 12 prints by Emna Zghal.

“This collection, titled The Prophet of Black Folk, comes not from the artist, but from the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture at the New York Public Library,” says Stephen Williams, manager of the Museum’s Curatorial Department. “It illustrates The Black Prophet by the contemporary Arab poet Adonis, and we made special arrangements with the Schomburg Center to bring these beautiful pieces to Dearborn.”

The public is invited to attend the opening reception for Utopian Visions at 6 p.m. Thursday, September 25 at the AANM. Those attending the reception are not required to pay Museum admission and complimentary refreshments are served.

Please RSVP to Fay Saad at 313.624.0200 or HERE.

The reception coincides with the start of the 2008 Fall Season of Ford Comerica Global hursdays Multicultural Performance Series, featuring a performance by MC Rai.

The Global Thursdays concert, which begins at 7:30 p.m., is a ticketed event;

Utopian Visions: The Artists

Rima Al-Awar
Biography:
Although she is currently based in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, Dr. Rima Al-Awar, 43, was raised in Lebanon and North Carolina, where her family relocated during the Lebanese civil war. During high school, Al-Awar discovered her love for oil painting, but at North Carolina State University, she earned a B.S. in Chemistry and a Ph.D in Synthetic Organic Chemistry. She presently works at the Ontario Institute for Cancer Research, where she directs the Medicinal Chemistry Platform. Al-Awar’s paintings have been exhibited in galleries in Indianapolis, Indiana in recent years.

Artist Statement:
The Aden Series was indirectly influenced by my fascination with Chinese characters and a personal effort to write/draw them. Most directly, this series attempts to address the interplay between man and woman balancing the ideal while ineffectively grappling with the complexity of reality. It was named after the great historical Yemeni city and the first known utopian haven painted for man…the Garden of Eden.

Website: http://www.carolina-art.com/Pages/Artists/ralawar.html

Rana Chalabi
Biography:
Formal studies in archaeology, architecture and Islamic art helped inform the creative vision of Rana Chalabi, 52, who was born in Syria, raised in Lebanon, and has lived and worked in Cairo, Egypt since 1981. She holds degrees from the American University campuses in both Beirut and Cairo and is also internationally certified as a practitioner of homeopathy, an alternative form of medicine, but considers herself a self-taught artist. Chalabi works in oils, acrylics, watercolor, pen, inks, stamps, mixed media, sculpture (wood and clay) and graphic design. She has exhibited frequently in Cairo; her work has also been presented in galleries in London, Paris and Amman, Jordan.

Artist Statement:
These works reflect two underlying themes of the dynamic and the static. In the male and female dancers it is the challenge of capturing the ephemeral nature of three-dimensional dynamic movement through the static medium of paper, oil, gold leaf, and colored inks. The movement of line and color, the interplay of diaphanous veil, and solid limbs, the highlights of gold within the fields of reds make the dance come alive. The whirling of
the dervishes is an ascension, an invitation to let go of the stasis of the body. Movement is life. The calligraphies are illustrations for a book called the Tao of Homeopathy, which speaks about the essentials of healing. These words were meant to provide a Sufi perspective by using Arabic words in a Chinese style. They were then printed as limited editions as art works which can stand on their own. The cityscape, inspired by Cairo, is a vision of the architecture and harmony of the old Arab cities.

Roula Ayoub
Biography:
Roula Ayoub’s abstract paintings have been exhibited in solo and group exhibitions in galleries and museums throughout the U.S. and abroad, including the Appleton Museum of Art in Florida; the Jordan National Gallery of Fine Arts in Amman, Jordan; the JHS Gallery in Taos, New Mexico; and the Galerie Espace Lucrèce in Paris, France.
In addition, her work is in public and corporate collections including those of the Beirut International Airport and the Bank Audi Art Collection in Beirut, Lebanon. Museum collections include those of the Museum of Fine Arts at Florida State University in Tallahassee Florida and the Sharjah Art Museum in UAE. Ayoub was born in 1964 in Monrovia, Liberia, West Africa. She received her M.S. in Interior Design and Fine Arts with honorable mention from Florida State University. Ayoub is currently based in Beirut, Lebanon but frequently visits Houston, Texas.

Artist Statement:
My art is somewhere beyond our world, a self created place, and a mixture of
different cultures creatively painted on canvas. It is a serene place where one would aspire to be, far from the rubbish existing in this world where mankind has disturbed what our greatest God has created.

With my various travels, journeys, and cultural experiences, I felt like creating a new world of my own, a world where there is only love, peace, happiness, faith, forgiveness, and understanding. In my art, you find freedom, peace, and joy, a place where one dreams to reach to.

My art is a world with no restrictions, nor distractions. It is a free world. Warm and cool colors, with luminescence uniting the two color schemes, are painted into abstractions where they amazingly complement one another. My art is beyond my description. It is, in fact, another gift from God. Images on my canvas are creations by Him, but only using my hand. For this, I am thankful as always.

Website: www.roula.net

Emna Zghal
Biography:
Emna Zghal was born and raised in Tunisia, where she earned a B.A. at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Tunis. She pursued her M.F.A. at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia and has studied at the Skowhegan (Maine) School of Painting & Sculpture. Zghal has several grants, residencies and fellowships to her credit. Two of her works were purchased by the American Academy of Arts and Letters’ Hassam, Speicher, Betts, and Symons Purchase Fund and donated to American museums. With collaborator Michael Rakowtiz, Zghal was awarded a 2008 grant by the Creative Capital Foundation. She currently resides in New York City.

Artist Statement:
Poetry has always been central to my art practice; it is my source of inspiration and
method of thinking. Whether in my abstract images or in my work with text, I view all the marks I make on the picture plane as words, as emotionally evocative, if not completely decipherable, symbolic entities.

My abstract works include drawings, oil paintings, and mixed-media works on paper. In my mixed-media works I combine woodcuts with collage and drawing on rice paper and mount them on stretched canvas so that the images float in space without borders. Formally, they are studies of organic patterns derived from woodgrain, bark, and the random way pigments settle on a canvas. The infinite quality of these patterns recalls textiles for many, but they are more aptly related to the tradition of pattern-making in Islamic art. While retaining this tradition’s infinite aspect, I question its rigorous geometric grid and its governing Platonic aesthetic. Unlike Plato, I think that perfection is to be found in nature, and not in the human simplification of it. The spaces I create are intended to allow viewers to meander, to recall the vastness, complexity, and mystifying qualities of nature.

A few years ago, I came across these lines by Adonis, a contemporary Arab poet: Black ink is flowing/over the papers of this/world: white cannot/be unless it is fertilized by black luster. They felt like an assignment, not only to make visual the images of the poem, but also to include the text. This encounter with Adonis marked the beginning of a new direction in my work. I began by making a portfolio of prints entitled The Prophet of Black Folk, in which I drew on Adonis’s poetry and accounts of the ninth-century poet Ali Ibn Mohamed who led an African slave revolt in Iraq’s southern marshes.

In 2005, I made an artist’s book, Cultures Of War: An Essay, in which I used the language of American writers, poets, and leaders in order to highlight how certain cultural attitudes – racism, a misplaced sense of strength, or charity — are grounds for effective war propaganda and give rise to war in much the same way as the geopolitical reasons more readily brought up to explain it. My second book, The Tree of My Mind, also borrows the words of others, this time to reflect on trees, their meanings, and their use as metaphors for human beings.

Currently, I am researching the various ways in which poetry was/is perceived as a threat, as did Plato who proposed to expel poets from his ideal city.

Clawson Steak House Celebrates 50 Years!

With the demise of the family owned steak house and the rise of corporate greed and pricing for a good dinner its nice to see a long time family run chop house still up and running.

Meet the Clawson Steak House if you have never heard of it...this place rules.

Superior service and ambiance - and the food - Forget about it.
At least 1/2 the price of all the other "name brand" steak houses and its better!

They are celebrating 50 years in business as a family run restaurant - check them out if you can get out to Clawson on Rochester Rd near 14 Mile Rd.

Order the house salad (best dressing in town - sorry Leo's Coney) and anything else on the menu is just as good // steak // shrimp // fish ...
usually a house band plays the stage and the bar is cool to hang with the all age crowd

If you plan to visit them - drop your attitude at the door and enjoy
You are not there to be seen or be in the scene.
Thumbs up from MCB and hopes for another 50 years!

Interview w/ Jon Visger from Mason Proper - NEW ALBUM OUT TODAY!

We were just doing our thing last week by posting a free MP3 from Michigan's Mason Proper
One of our PR peeps hit us up with a freebie to post and before you knew it -bLAMMo we got hit up with an email from Jon Visger - lead singer from MP asking us about our posting.
After a few exchanges we managed to squeeze water from the stone and came up with a mini email interview from Jon about the band - the new record - his girlfriends dog etc..
Olly Oxen Free hit the streets today from Dovetone Records - BUY IT ! you will like it!
The guys have a CD Release show over in Ann Arbor this week at The Blind Pig - all ages show and you get a copy of the new release upon entry - You can't lose kids!
CD RELEASE PARTY WITH THE SILENT YEARS,AND THE NOVEL CITIZEN
$12 / Under 21 $15
( cover includes a cd )
ALL AGES. Doors 8 p.m.
Interview with Jon Visger from Mason Proper
MCB:
Hi John - With the new record Olly Oxen Free hitting the streets
tomorrow and the CD release show kicking off the mini tour out in Ann Arbor MI this week -
How is the band feeling about the reception of the new record?

JVoMP:
We were consciously going into this record thinking, "We're making
what we like, and if nobody likes it, that is completely fine." So
far it's turning out that a fair amount of people like the same thing
we like, and that feels really good. We feel at one with the world.

MCB:
What part of MI do you hail from and name your favorite small venue you
guys like to play here in the metro detroit area?

JVoMP:
We originally assembled from the great white north of Alpena, but now
we call Ann Arbor our home. In Detroit, we've been fortunate enough
lately to get on great shows at the Magic Stick/the Majestic/and the
Magic Bag, but those don't seem like small venues to me. I really
like the Pike Room, if that counts. Their sound guys make everything
crystal clear in a way that is more rare than it should be.

MCB:
Who in the band is most responsible for the initial writing //
assembly // polishing of the songs?
Who usually cracks the 1st beer of theday and gets the most phone numbers by the end of the night at the club?

JVoMP:
I usually hermit up and write a bunch of songs, which we pick and
choose from and iron out as a group. They bounce around for a while
between all of us, and usually I handle a lot of the recording side,
and final changes.

I like that you phrased the second question in such a way that the
person who cracks the 1st beer of the day is automatically the person
who gets the most phone numbers by the end of the night. The answer,
of course, is Henry Winkler, circa mid-1970s.

MCB:
What is your bulldog's name and who does he/she like most from the> band?

JVoMP:
Walter, formerly Pudge, R.I.P. My girlfriend's dog. He never met the
other guys, but he probably would have eaten their shoes. With their
feet still inside. Legs, etc.

MCB:
You are playing the CMJ Showcase for Dovecote Records in NYC coming up in late October - how has it been working with Dovecote the past year or so?

Did you steal anything from the house where you recorded the new record?

JVoMP:
Working with Dovecote has always been fantastic. They're our good friends at this point, and are as patient as we are with everything, which is important when you're starting out.

The house we recorded in was empty except for some construction
supplies, so there wasn't much to steal. The owner did give us a free
bag of charcoal for Zac's grill. He also was supposedly going to get
me a free guitar from his friend who built them. The neck was made
out of metal or something. He didn't know anything about guitars, but
he assured me you could jump on the neck and it would not break, so he
figured it must be a good one. He never came through, but I heard he
designs weapons systems now.

MCB:
Your quoted as saying "This album is born of the same internal madness as the first, only now the layers have been lifted. The core of our band is exposed, to be loved, hated, or ignored." - with the reviews of the record through the roof and exposure of the band higher than its ever ...

its probably safe to say that Mason Proper will be loved by the masses... your thoughts?

JVoMP:
Nobody's ever safe in this climate. They can turn on you like THAT.
I just don't think anybody's automatically entitled to anything with
art, and I never take it for granted. It's really exciting that
people are paying attention, but I'm mostly just proud of the actual
thing we have created, that I can hear it without wishing it was
different, and what we've become as a group of people, because nobody
can take that away.

MCB:
Is there anyone you hope to see at the CD release show at The Blind Pig?

JVoMP:
David Bowie. He's like the spectral harbinger of indie success.
David Byrne would also suffice. Give me validation, oh Davids!

These people are not coming to the Blind Pig. I think my friend David
is coming though. He will do. I hope I see him. If there are about
20 Davids there, I think that is about the equivalent of one David
Bowie or Byrne.

MCB:
What are Mason Proper's plans for 2009?

JVoMP:
New album. Better than this one. New tours. Bigger than this one.
Start exercising. Drop 10 pounds, 15 times; subsequently disappear.

MCB:
Thanks for finding MOTORCITYBLOG and best of luck to you and MP with the new record.
WE DIG IT!

JVoMP:
Thank YOU! Ramen time.

WILD AT HEART - Monday Sept 22nd 2008

Kirk - Here is today's blog post for MCB - Wild Bill
Bill Ketelhut provides the "blog" to this anti-blog
He has a radio program on WXOU out of Oakland University

Wild At Heart

I had a great time at the People’s Art Festival at the Russell Industrial Complex this past Sunday.

I was there representing WXOU at the MOTORCITYBLOG table and I want to thank all the people who stopped on by and said ‘Hi’, including my newest myspace friend, sexy Sandy from Ferndale, lead singer Christina of Bricktown Station and everybody else. The festival was a nice mix of local music (including great sets by Rogue Satellites, Sultry Surfers of the Apocalypse, Innerphonic, Joan Of Arc and Los Minstrels Del Diablo) and art by a number of talented local artisans.

They also had a movie screening room (MICHIGAN MOVIE HOUSE) which ran locally produced movie and some old Corman films. The best was a Mexican wrestling movie called “Enter Zombie King” (aka Zombie Beach Party). This is one of the funniest movies I have seen in awhile. Ulysses, a professional wrestler, is going to watch his old partner Tiki fight in a match where he will go up against a horde of zombies. During the fight, one of the waitresses is killed by a zombie and Ulysses, with his friends, decide to take matters into their own hands and track down the creatures. The movie boasts music by the Tijuana Bibles, a cameo by WWF wrestler Jim “the Anvil” Neidhart and just a lot of cliché ridden dialogue that just seems to work for this film.

The event was made to coincide with the grand opening of the Russell Bazaar which is hoping to become a destination for shoppers though I am not sure it succeeds. The place isn’t finished just yet but a number of vendors have opened up shop. There are some unique artist areas but the other shops don’t really offer anything that you can’t get elsewhere which I think will be what holds it back. While having places that sell beanie babies, carpeting and hair products isn’t bad, I think the bazaar needs 3-4 unique stores that offer products you can’t get elsewhere along with the art galleries. Loco’s and Niki’s are not yet open and will hopefully be so soon. My favorite shop was the Future Gallery which puts together a mix of local art and music so look at the online and check them out. I hope this experiment works out but by fear is that is will not be unique enough to maintain a lot of traffic. I hope I’m wrong.

I had the pleasure of seeing a wonderful theatre production this week with the Detroit debut of “Say Goodnight, Gracie” which will be playing at the GEM until Nov 16th.

The man lived to be 100 years old and along with his one true love, Gracie Allen, became a star of vaudeville, radio, TV and film. “Say Goodnight, Gracie” is the Broadway play starring Joel Rooks which allows us to look back at the life of a man who is fondly remembered for his work with Gracie as well as his portrayal of 'God' (a role he remarks that they were looking for someone close to his age to play him). The play starts with George Burns at the time of his death where he is in limbo and must perform a one man play of his life to be able to move on and be with his Gracie. Rooks does a wonderful job capturing the essence of Mr Burns along with his signature cigars. He looks back upon his impoverished, plucky youth on the lower East Side of New York, his disastrous but tenacious career in Vaudeville, the momentous day when he meet a fabulously talented young Irish girl named Grace Ethel Cecile Rosalie Allen and their instant chemistry, their marriage and joint rise to the pinnacles of Vaudeville, Movies, Radio and Television and his life in movies afterwards.

The show is a multimedia presentation that also features the vocal talents of actress Didi Conn as Gracie Allen as well as music and film of George's life, including some material with Gracie and his best buddy Jack Benny. George seemed to have the perfect life with great friends, a wonderful lover and successful career. The play, written by Rupert Holmes (yes of "Escape, The Pina Colada Song" fame) does a great job bringing George to life in a play that shouldn't be missed. I talked with Joel who agreed with me that without Gracie, George might never had been a star which is seen by the fact even though it is a one man play, the bits showcasing Gracie's material get the biggest laughs just like they did in real life. This is one of the best plays to come through the area. Grade: A+. Go to www.gemtheatre.com for more information.

I also saw the movie Ghost Town, not to be confused with the 1988 horror western, this new 2008 flick is a romantic comedy which happens to have ghosts. David (Stir Of Echoes) Koepp directs as we are introduced to misanthropic dentist Bertram Pincus (Ricky Gervais). The films tagline is “He sees dead people... and they annoy him”. He is not a people person by any stretch, alienating co-workers and the people in his apartment. After a near death experience after a simple operation, he gains the ability to communicate with ghosts which he doesn’t want. One ghost, Frank Herlihy (Greg Kinnear), is particularly persuasive and tries to get Pincus to help him break up the impending marriage of his widow Gwen (Téa Leoni), putting him in the middle of a supernatural love triangle.

Pincus doesn’t want to help but finds himself attracted to Gwen so he gets involved with her life to end her relationship. Things go south when she gets suspicious of some of the personal things she does and Pincus decides to make himself worthy of her by helping out the ghosts take care of their unfinished business. It's not as bad as it might sound since the movie does avoid many of the clichés that could cripple a movie of this kind. Kinnear is his charming self while Gervais does a great job in being an aloof human being. He develops a nice chemistry with Leoni which makes the film a great movie to take a date to. Grade: B+.

Another big event this weekend was the Ferndale DIY Festival. I was down there part of Saturday, mainly checking out some of the musical acts. One of the acts I enjoyed was Paul Green’s School Of Rock which is basically a place where young kids can learn how to be Rock N Roll stars. The documentary ‘Rock School’ was based on the school and the film “School Of Rock” has been said to have been influenced by it. Either way, they did a Rolling Stone tribute this week including such songs as ‘Bitch”, Wind Horses, and ‘Tumblin Dice’ and many others. If this sounds like fun, you can check out there AC/DC tribute show on the 27th and 28th at Main Street Billiards. They also have shows dedicated to Led Zeppelin, 80’s tributes and Motley Crue vs Gun’s N Roses. Check them out at www.schoolofrock.com

The other thing I learned in Ferndale is the Detroit Curling Club is looking for new members. Believed to have been invented in medieval Scotland, the word derives from the verb ‘curr’ which describes a low rumble the stone makes when it moves across the ice. The first world championship was played in 1959 and won by the Canadian team from Regina, Saskatchewan. The first curling club in the United States was organized in 1831 only thirty miles from Detroit in Orchard Lake, Michigan. The Detroit Curling Club started back in 1885 and you can learn more about them at www.detroitcurlingclub.com

Curling is a team sport with similarities to bowling and shuffle board, played by two teams of four players each on a rectangular sheet of carefully prepared ice. I played a bit while at Bowling Green and it was a lot of fun. They also know how to party so if interested trying something new, give them a try.

Lastly, come to the Crofoot on Friday, Sept 26th where WXOU (more info at www.wxou.org ) will be having a fundraiser with special musical guests The Wild Years from Ann Arbor. Check out there music at http://www.myspace.com/wildyearsmusic and then get ready to come out and get some free swag at event. Also meet your favorite DJ’s, such as Wild Bill (which is me) and Nick Rorick among others. Doors are at 9PM. The Wild Years have a sound that seems like a mix of Andrew Bird and the Flaming Lips that one reviewer described as a blend of “chilly electro-dance and hazy folk-pop”. It should be a fun show so stop on down to Pontiac and check it out.

I will also be having Americana singer Sally Spring on my show that morning talking about her upcoming show at the Trinity House on Sept 26th.

PJ's Lager House Lineup

We ran into PJ from Lager House yesterday over the MCB booth at PAF...
He filled us in on the great lineup this week in particular and wanted to extend an invitation to all our readers to come on out and hang at PJLH.
Its been a year now that PJ took over the corktown staple and after lots of fix up work and the challenges that new ownership brings he is happy with the last 365 and looking forward to many more...With a "no-cover" shows (unless noted) and cheap drinks he has seen many bands who promote themselves properly walk out the door with 4 figure payouts.
We usually would pick 1 show from the PJLH lineup and post it but this week in recognition of PJ - Carrie - and rest of the LH staff (Hey Karen!) we raise our glass to you!
Here is the lineup for the week:
All shows 21+ and no cover unless otherwise noted.
Monday, September 22 - TONIGHT!!!
Jambang (f/Greg Ginn of Black Flag and SST Records) & the Taylor Texas Corrugators
10pm
If you missed it the first time around, don't miss it this time!!! Greg Ginn had such a good time last time he came through Detroit back on June 16th, he's already back again. You thought a man who was in Black Flag would only be all about punk and metal, eh? WRONG! Don't miss this night you thought you'd never see (again)… it's a long way from Henry Rollins. Jambang is the latest project in the Greg Ginn (of SST Records and formerly of Black Flag) catalog of sound. Jambang offers listeners a hybrid of electronic and organic instrumentation. Ginn mans both the guitar and the electronic sections. The group's debut release, Connecting, is the result of an eclectic blend of artists and musicians united by the common thread of their love of jambands and improvisation. Ginn's other group, The Texas Taylor Corrugators, will also be playing. Their slogan, "I'm not really a redneck, I just play one on TV" sums up this country style rhythm and swing band. They provide a toe tappin' backdrop to the usual suspects of Texas Swing.
Tuesday, September 23
The Terrible Twos w/The Intelligence, Druid Perfume
10pm
The Terrible Twos are one of the main components of local label X! Records—frantic, straight-up punk from this Detroit five-piece. Get your face blown off and then some; go to the bar for a $3 Jameson shot and be back for more. "You're like getting electrocuted," they were told by a Green Bay fan. The Intelligence are dancepunk, garage, lo-fi, no wave and, above all, energetic and loud. Their music sounds simultaneously claustrophobic and uncontainable with tight rhythms and relentless vigor butting up against pounding drums and fuzzy, echoing vocals. The effect is a peculiarly harsh but satisfying final product. They're noisy nursery rhyme melodies in a synth-punk dungeon. Druid Perfume is a four-piece from Ferndale that fits straight into the evening's kickass lineup. You will have a good time watching, if not participating in, this three-pronged Tuesday night freak show.
Wednesday, September 24
Freak Juice
10pm
Freak Juice is a band that is pushing the boundaries of traditional rock music by infusing jazz, hip-hop, reggae, blues and the art of improvisation into a new, fresh and invigorating wall of sound. Each member of the present line-up is a seasoned professional with many years of experience on stage as well as in the studio. Tori Ruffin, the bands founder and chief visionary, has said that although he has been fortunate enough to work with some of the biggest names in the music bizness, he feels even more fortunate to have found the newest additions to the Freak Juice family. This group is based in part out of Tulsa, Oklahoma.
Thursday, September 25
SRC Thursdays with Gary Quackenbush
10pm
$4
Come down to PJ's Lager House every Thursday in September for a rocking good time with Detroit rock legend Gary Quackenbush! Quackenbush is a founding member of the venerable SRC and will be playing the SRC hits and other classics live onstage every Thursday. Many of the songs are featured on his first solo album, GQ In A Shade of Blue, out on SRC Records. Don't miss this chance for an intimate brush with Detroit rock history! The first twenty people in the door get a free CD-- choose from five different SRC releases. This is a fantastic deal for only $4... a live show AND a CD.
Friday, September 26
The Budget Sinners w/The Mantons, Rachel Brooke
10pm
$5
Local group The Budget Sinners is fronted by Detroit veteran Tim Pak (ex-Salt miners, Angry Red Planet) on vocals and guitar, features hard-hitting drumming from Ryan Looney and the bass playing of Ed Sertage. Eric James Myers, previously of Warhorses, brings the licks on lead guitar. The Budget Sinners are funtime Americana. It's time to break out the whiskey. The Mantons are lean and mean. Nobody has ever given them an inch; they probably never will. That's because people are afraid of a band that tells it like it is. But, in the end, The Mantons Do The Thing That Must Be Done. They are Here, for You. Enjoy. Rachel Brooke comes armed with an acoustic guitar, dusty and seemingly timeless vocals. Brooke minds Old-Time Country & Folk in her own sweet irresistible way!
Saturday, September 27
The Cetan Clawson Revolution w/The Pack AD, The Straightbacks
10pm
Folks just can't get enough of The Cetan Clawson Revolution. Twenty-year old Clawson is a true rock and blues virtuoso and the bassist and drummer aren't anything to scoff at either. Come out to see him—you truly won't regret it; this guy has amazing skills. Clawson may be the best rock'n'roll guitarist in North America at this time. The Pack AD is a female two-piece from British Columbia. They take life on the road, Civil War stories, coffee and cigarettes, and stir them into a vicious concoction of garage rock and Jack Daniels then boil it alive in the blues. This Vancouver duo strikes with a raw, hell-torn, blues-rock swagger that is equally contemplative and unflinching. The Straightbacks are a youthful hard-hitting five piece from Holly; a perfecting mix of The Strokes, Interpol and Lee Marvin Computer Arm
(We caught PJ in the crowd last night at CCR closed out the PAF2008 - nice!)

"The Night Move" - Affordable Uptown to Downtown Green Shuttle Service - Launch Party @ WAB - Thur Oct 9th

MCB got a call from the folks over at "The Night Move" today and they filled us in on some the details behind metro detroit's newest form of green transpo - a biofuel-shuttle service!

"I have some positive news for you that's going to be really big for bridging the gap between downtown and suburbanites. I'm writing to tell you about the Night Move (www.thenightmove.com), metro Detroit's new shuttle service.

The service will run from Royal Oak to Ferndale to Detroit and back every weekend night.

The plan is to encourage people and by proxy, commerce, into the city by targeting those who are hesitant to venture down on their own, for reasons like the hassle of driving and their safety concerns about going into the city alone and leaving a car unattended. We'll also save people gas money and help the environment, both by being a carpool-like alternative to individual vehicles, and by running on B20 biodiesel." - Jennifer Harlan from The Night Move

There is a launch party coming up over at The WAB in Ferndale which will showcase the top secret BioBus which is getting its final touches at the ol' paint shop:

The Night Move Launch Party!
Thursday October 9th 6pm-10pm
Woodward Avenue Brewery
Ferndale, MI
Come celebrate the launch of metro Detroit’s
shuttle service!
Good food, great beer, and tons of networking.
Come early to enter for prizes:
iPods, T-shirts, and free rides.

Check their website out for all the details and back here on MCB for some video of "The Night Move" in action before it hits the streets

EAGLES OF DEATH METAL ARE READY TO SHOW OFF THEIR "HEART ON"...
NATION WIDE. TICKETS WILL FLY...
CROWDS WILL ROAR...
EAGLES OF DEATH METAL GOING ON TOUR

Band Set to Release“Heart On” on October 28th via Downtown Records

Currently breaking hearts and bottles in the southwest, Eagles of Death Metal are getting ready to seduce the rest of the country. The band is in the midst of successful, co-headlining tour with The Hives, much to the delight of Texans, Californians, and Arizonians everywhere and to the disappointment of everywhere else-ians. But have no fear, rest of country - new tour dates have appeared! Eagles are ready to strike a city near you like a swift karate slap to the jugular. After unleashing “Heart On” to the masses, the courageous cast of characters will hit the open waters on the first headlining tour for the soaked-in-sexy new album.

The EODM formula for fantastic is humm…let’s see…that’s one part Jesse “Boots Electric” Hughes, one part Joshua “Babyduck” Homme. Stirred and served chillllled in a tall glass of class. It goes down smooth every time. Earlier this year, the two captains of the EODM starship left their underground lair 16 kilometers below the earth’s core to lay down a dozen new rumpshaking, rock hard rock tunes. The Dream Duo recorded in Burbank, Los Angeles, Boise, Fargo, and Amsterdam, and were joined by fellow magicians Miss Kat Von D, Brian “B.O.C.” O’Connor, Darlin’ Dave Catching, Alain Johannes, Troy Van Leeuwen, Brody “Queen Bee” Dalle, and Kim “Koko Bubbles” Martinelli.

Look out for the album’s first single “Wanna Be In LA” – a tale that confirms the gospel of Boots Electric and Babyduck… that selling your soul for Rock n Roll is totally worth it.

Primping, Pin-Ups, Painting and Pottery - Rivers Edge Gallery Wyandotte - Fri Sept 19th

Primping, Pin-Ups, Painting and Pottery will be featured on the mezzanine while Images We Love will be featured on the third floor in the Patricia Izzo Fine Art Photography Gallery.

The idea for Primping, Pin-Ups, Painting and Pottery was sparked by a series of oil paintings by Julie Fournier which depicted woman in various stages of primping: applying lipstick, curling eyelashes, painting toe nails and finalizing hairdos. "She really captured all of the minor movements that most women learn at an early age and actually take quite a bit of skill." stated Aimee Rodriguez, show curator. Aimee also stated that "Many would see these images as repressive while others would consider them highly sexualized or nothing more than well executed images of women in motion"

Some of Fournier's other recent paintings were the inspiration for another theme of the show, "pin ups". She and other artists in the show have resurrected the "pin up" popularized by Esquire Magazine in the 1930's. The early Pin-ups were iconic and some models like Bettie Page are still remembered for their Pin-up images. Pin-ups are shown in many styles and media in this show including in the recent pottery of Steve Glazer.
Not only is the imagery of women featured. Jewelry is often considered the crowning touch to any ensemble. In Primping, Pin-Ups, Painting and Pottery that which finishes the finished woman is given equal respect.

In the second show, Patricia Izzo, the curator, asked 13 artists to show 3 pieces of their fine art photographic images that they loved. "It is not often that an artist is asked to choose images that are their personal favorites" stated Izzo. This led to an eclectic group of images and styles. Some of the artists are veterans in shows such as Robert Stewart, Marianne Letasi, Cheryl Button, Elayne Gross, Elaine Redmond, A. Owen Layne and Joe Crachiola. But Izzo has added a few new faces to the mix to show the emerging end of photography with the works of Irakly Shanidze, Lisolette Gilcrest, Jon Wheeler, Vicki Athens and Beth Hoxie.

10pm
$7

Scott Morgan first played to 13,000 screaming fans when he was only 16 years old. Now old enough to know better but too deep in rock and soul to care, Morgan is one of the longest hardest-working men in Detroit rock'n'roll.

Morgan worked with all the heavyhitters of the time including Iggy Pop, Bob Seger and Jeep Holland. After rising to regional stardom while still a student at Ann Arbor Pioneer High School with The Rationals, Morgan kicked around in bands like Guardian Angel and Lightning before teaming up with MC5 guitarist Fred "Sonic" Smith, Stooges drummer Scott Asheton and Up bassist Gary Rasmussen to form the legendary Detroit supergroup, Sonic's Rendezvous Band.

Today, Morgan is the frontman of Powertrane. The soulful singing, moves and blue eyes are all still there; come out for this show with one of Detroit's living legends. Los Vikings del Muerto is another project of Universal Temple of Divine Power's Elliott Moses. For the undereducated of you the name is Spanish for "Vikings of the Dead." They are a group who knows their way around a guitar and a case of beer with equal ease—loud, hard and fast music punctuates their straightforward hard rocking sound.

Lola Morales "Write My Story" CD RELEASE Show - Magic Bag -Thurs Oct 2nd

MCB highly suggests checking out this show - WOW!

LOLA MORALES, “WRITE MY STORY” CD RELEASE
THURSDAY, OCTOBER 2nd 8 PM
THE MAGIC BAG THEATRE
FERNDALE MI

On Thursday, October 2nd, in Ferndale’s Magic Bag Theatre, a talented singer/ songwriter will make her mark in Detroit music history when she releases her first full-length CD, with a release party that will also include an electrifying performance to celebrate the self-release of, “Write My Story”.

Her Story-Lola Morales is the singer/songwriter’s name, and one you will be hearing quite a lot from in the future. Lola Morales’ music, which has been-categorized as “World Music”, creates a seamless blend of Salsa, Funk, R & B, Pop and even Jazz- and just about every strain of North and South American popular music into something quite, well…American.

Sung in both Spanish and English, Lola Morales’ music is more than Latin Pop - it’s is a melting pot of the entire Americas, North and South, from Argentina to the coldest climes of North America. Lola Morales is the product of immigrant Nicaraguan parents, whose father played Salsa piano, and grew up living in predominately Black neighborhoods of San Francisco.A stunning beauty with her trademark corkscrew hair, which only adds another element to the mix -a sultry and exotic sexuality, has resided in Hamtramck for the past two years, while electrifying audiences and critics alike as she crafted both her EP, “Luna Nova” in 2006 and her latest, ‘Write My Story” at Rust Belt Studios in Royal Oak.

American Music-The face of America is changing- and Lola Morales is a musical vindication of this reality. Lola Morales music is a Pan American sound, where indie rock feels right at home with Salsa or Norteno, and Soul commingles with decidedly Brasilliano rhythm to create this collection of first rate New American music. It’s an undeniable synthesis of hybrid cultural genetics. For her, Detroit represented an edge, a fertile bed of Proto-punk, techno and soulful Hip Hop that cover this town like a sheet, blanket and comforter. Lola Morales has reveled in this bed of talent and styles that is Detroit. She likens her residence here, to her “Post Graduate” work.

From Berkeley To Buenos Aires-“Write My Story” is an appropriate CD title for this globe-trotting Troubadora, seeing as Morales has lived and worked everywhere from her native San Francisco to Quito, Ecuador, Tokyo, Japan to London England, Singapore and now Detroit, where she’s soaked up this region’s rich musical heritage – and their world-class musicians, at the behest of her Step-father, who happens to live in Hamtramck.Gaining a degree from Berkeley (CA) in Rhetoric it’s no surprise that she pens such smart and incisive lyrics, delivered in both Spanish and English- depending on the music, is a testament to her love of language as well as music.Write My Story defies simple categorization. Like a rhythmic rubber band, Morales and her crack outfit including bassist, Paul Randolph and Eric Hogemeyer on keyboards, segue imperceptibly from middle eastern to a salsa beat in such a slippery fashion that it’ll leave you shaking your head as well as your body, as evidenced in the superb album opener, Enciedeme.

The sensual, jazzy groove of “Sunrise”, is Urban R & B with a twist of Steely Dan sprinkled with Morales’ powerful phrasing and knack for a sticky sweet hook, is another stunner. A lot of the credit goes Rustbelt Studios, Al Sutton and Eric Hoegemeyer’s sympathetic and unobtrusive production to this eclectic buffet of styles and choice rhythms. It just might be some of the best work of their career’s, as well as their most challenging.Morales also won the 2007 Detroit Music Award for Best World Vocalist in addition to 2 other nominations. Opening the party will be, Pathe Jassi ‘s World Experience, an amazing band with a Senegalese front man, adding to this evening of exotic and rhythmic music.

FREE DOWNLOAD: The Juan MacLean

Check this page for download and streams

Riding high on their overseas success touring with Cut Copy in Australia and a slew of European festivals, The Juan MacLean are touring through September. The previous tour was in celebration of "Happy House", the massive international club hit being spun ubiquitously from Ibiza to Santo's Party House in NYC, but this tour will be bringing "The Simple Life", the second track to be introduced on September 15th (UK) /16th (US) from the forthcoming album “The Future Will Come”.

Pitchfork proclaimed that epic single, "Happy House", is both happy and housey as all get out, but over its dozen never wasted minutes it moves thru several other iterations -- pop tune, dubbed-out instrumental, pulsing techno, with LCD SOUNDSYTEM's, Nancy Whang, who wrote the track w/ Maclean, holding it all down in the DIVA role.”

Now, drastically different "The Simple Life" is an effective mixture of dark arpeggiated synth and militant italo disco drumming, with each bass line and chord change a step towards the light, which in this case belongs to Nancy Whang and the melancholy ambience her presence exudes. She trades verses back and forth with Juan himself, who comes on like a robot in therapy, slowly enunciating love confessions like "promises I never meant, it's just what I had to do."
Juan and Nancy will be supported on stage by Nick Millhiser and Gerry Fuchs (!!! and Turing Machine).

The Juan MacLean's new album, The Future Will Come, is due out in early 2009.

Billy Howerdel works from intuition, a modus operandi which has defined his career, guiding the move from his days in theatrical lighting around New York and New Jersey to his work as a guitar technician. Billy worked with a number of high profile rock bands, ultimately leading to his creative breakthrough as the songwriter/guitarist/producer for alt-rock giants, A Perfect Circle.

Going a step further, Billy’s uses his intuition to guide his own music. He does so without the aid of formal musical training. In fact, in a recent interview about his new project “ASHES dIVIDE, Billy stated, “To this day, I still don’t remember certain notes on the guitar neck.” He started playing guitar in high school, and picked up the technical aspects quickly, roughly in six months. He recalls getting to the point that he didn’t want to learn much more. That was the moment when he realized, “I had to stop thinking about patterns and scales, and work from emotion”. He states, “The best way I can describe it is that it was like opening your eyes and then blurring them out of focus, that’s how I approach music.”

The intuitive, unpredictable and yet immediately identifiable sound of Howerdel’s guitar work is at play in ASHES dIVIDE. This is his project – he’s the primary songwriter, musician, producer, and vocalist. It’s an album featuring a wide range of styles, moods, and thoughts, with echoes of early 80’s modern rock/Dark Wave mixed with shimmering guitars and heavy rock overtones. It’s both anthemic and subtle, an album that fans of The Cure to A Perfect Circle will certainly appreciate.

Howerdel never intended to be a rock star. It’s more like music discovered him. Growing up in West Milford, New Jersey, Howerdel would spend hours in his parent’s bedroom, listening to the one radio in his house that could receive the modern rock radio stations emanating out of Long Island, New York. Lying in bed, he would scribble down playlists and then scout out the records he loved in stores, among them The Cure, Echo and the Bunnymen, Dead Kennedy’s, and Elvis Costello.

Despite his indifference to classic rock, it was the experience of seeing Pink Floyd at Giants Stadium that triggered his lust for finding a way to work in the music industry. “It was such a massive show, and it touched me on so many levels – both visually and sonically,” he remembers. “Before that, I had no burning desire to be a musician. But being around all that energy, where everyone feels so good…I had to get involved, in some capacity.”

Still unsure of exactly what his newfound passion would entail, Howerdel began with stage lighting, working for almost any band or theater production that would ask, while at the same time devoting the rest of his free time to practicing guitar. A few years of work led to a chance meeting with Fishbone and his next abrupt decision – to migrate from lighting to guitar technician, a job he had never held before.

Thanks to his work with Fishbone, Howerdel soon became a sought-after road tech, and he soon found himself running in the same circles as many important bands of the 90’s, but most importantly, Tool. During a Fishbone/Tool tour of France, Tool frontman Maynard Keenan and Howerdel became friends, which led to the guitarist’s next unexpected career choice.

“ I had just come off the road with David Bowie, and I decided I needed to give the music I had written more time to evolve than was possible on the road,” remembers Howerdel. While working for Guns N’ Roses as a Pro Tools Engineer, a position that afforded Howerdel the luxury of staying in Los Angeles, he bumped into Maynard at a bar in Hollywood. Howerdel mentioned that he was looking for a room to rent, and Maynard offered to have him move into his house in North Hollywood. While living together, Maynard heard some of Howerdel’s music, and after a search for a suitable female vocalist, Maynard casually mentioned an interest in singing on his instrumentals. Howerdel recalls, “It was very organic how that collaboration came about.”

This initial collaboration led to A Perfect Circle, whose credits include two platinum and one gold record. Unlike Tool, APC featured a moodier, more melodic sound that was built off of Howerdel’s guitar work. Although the band eventually went on hiatus, it was during some of the final recording work on the (mostly) covers album eMotive where Howerdel took his next creative step, performing lead vocals on several tracks.

ASHES dIVIDE continues Howerdel’s growth as an artist in his own right. “It was important for Billy to go and do his own thing and really explore his own sound and let people hear what he has to say and how he would do it on his own,” said Keenan earlier this year in an interview. Listening to ASHES dIVIDE, that point is more than driven home. Howerdel recorded all the music in his home studio, and he laughs, recalling how he would hit the “record” button from his control room, and run to the microphone in the vocal booth.

That’s not to say Ashes is a one-man project. Longtime collaborator Danny Lohner (APC, Nine Inch Nails) helped out with the recording process, while Josh Freese (APC), and Keenan’s son Devo make appearances on the album. Other contributors include Johnette Napolitano(Concrete Blonde), Matt Skiba(Alkaline Trio) and Paz Lenchantin, while Alan Moulder mixed the album. However, the music is decidedly the work of Howerdel, and features his emotional insights and musical vision.

“It’s funny, I didn’t want to tinker too much,” he says. “Sometimes I’d get something in three takes and keep it. Other times, in the spirit of moving forward, I’d try to record something that I wouldn’t normally do. It was a good exercise, making me break away from patterns, and do something uncomfortable.”

Lyrically, Howerdel wanted to explore a wide range of emotions. Although many of the topics on the record deal with real emotions and experiences in his life, Howerdel often cloaked the stories into a fictitious narrative. “I started taking acting lessons recently, and they talk a lot about displacement—using someone powerful from your past or present to bring forward emotion,” he says. “So a song like ‘Stripped Away’, the opening track, has phrases and sentiments that are very personal to me…but I have someone else in mind as the catalyst for revealing these charged emotions while protecting myself.”

‘The Stone’, the album’s first single, centers on the concept of self-worth and denial, while serving as a musical guide to the rest of the record. Howerdel says, “There are several songs on the record that deal with the idea of not being worthy or pushing people away. This song is interesting, because at times it was getting musically heavy for the wrong reasons. I think heaviness, in music, is a delicate matter. Songs can’t be heavy for the wrong reasons.”

This spring, Howerdel plans to bring ASHES dIVIDE out on the road (line-up TBD), where he can bring the songs into a new context, and where he himself can re-discover their meaning. “I don’t want these to be verbatim copies from the record,” he says. “I want to find out where these songs are going. It’s funny, for this project, I was everything from the writer to the janitor, and whatever comes in-between. It’s a weird concept, for a control freak like me, to finally be able to let these songs go and let them live.”

Bill Kettelhut provides the "blog" to this anti-blog
He has a radio program on WXOU out of Oakland University

Wild At Heart

How are things going Detroit!

The first annual Metro Music Expo finished up this weekend with mixed results. I went on Friday with my buddy Nick who does the punk rock show at WXOU 88.3FM (http://www.wxou.org/) and we liked the start-up effort and offer some suggestions for next year.

First, we liked the diversity having a nice mixture of art and new equipment for the music fans. I enjoyed some of the bands like SikSik Nation (which I am playing on my show), Ether Aura and Greenstreet which all played nice sets the opening night. My friend Nick enjoyed the Rock N Rummage people who brought an eclectic mix of old flyers, stickers and other rock stuff to the show. Despite all this, we both would have liked to see a little more with having some more diversification like tables by Live Nation, area venues (like the Crofoot or the Majestic), the DSO, the Motown Museum, local record labels and more record stores and music shops. You need to really get someone big also to make people want to drive out to Novi to attend. Maybe people like Kid Rock, Alice Cooper, Don Was and the like if possible. Not bad for a start but they need to really work it like the Motor City Comic Con.

I would also like to thank my friend Mark who invited me out to Motor City Casino for a look at their new renovation. I liked the art deco styling they have gone with along with the strong automotive theme of the artwork. It makes it feel like a real Detroit casino. He also bought me dinner which was cool. We did the new buffet which is an upgrade on what I though was the best casino buffet before MGM upgraded. The Assembly Line (which it is now called) is pricey but it is definitely worth it. The only thing I didn’t like as well was the dessert table which I thought went downhill (I did enjoy the Lemon Meringue pie and the tarts). However, they have upgraded the rest of the food items in an international theme. I enjoyed the fresh turkey which they were carving along with the prime rib which was delicious that night. My favorite was the sushi area which had a large variety and good portions unlike most other buffets. Overall, I very good buffet. I can’t say it is better than MGM’s new buffet which has its own perks (including a better dessert table), but I can say they are both equally good and worth checking out every once in awhile.

In my travels this week, I found myself over in Farmington so I stopped by the Gov Warner Museum. Located at 33805 Grand River Ave, this 1867 Italianate structure was built by his adopted father P. Dean Warner in Farmington. Fred M. Warner, who was governor of Michigan from 1905 to 1911, was the first governor to serve three successive terms in that office and he introduced such progressive legislation as regulation of railroad and insurance, conservation, child labor laws and woman's suffrage. His heirs deeded the mansion and grounds to the City of Farmington in 1980. Since then it has become a museum furnished in Victorian style and is open to the public through a program of docent-guided tours. This is a nice little slice of local history for history buffs and while only a few items are from the Warner family, it is a beautiful home. One item of interest is a letter of congratulations from Theodore Roosevelt to Warner. You can also walk the gardens in the back of the house. The museum is open on Wednesdays and first Sundays between March and December so feel free to stop on by.

I also stopped by the Birmingham Bloomfield Art Center and despite getting a little lost, I finally found it. Primarily an art school, they do have 4 galleries which have rotating exhibits as well as an OK gift store. The galleries focus primarily on student work and Michigan artists. Going until Oct 10th are “Marie Woo: A Clay Odyssey” (not a big fan of artsy clay works for the most part and my least favorite exhibit), “Birmingham Society of Women Painters” and “The Students of Leslie Masters” (mostly student work and some local artists which is the typical mixed lot. It all depends on what you like.

There were only a few works that really take my eye are these galleries) and lastly “Mary Brodbeck: Woodblock Prints” (my favorite exhibition since I love this style and the work had a naturalistic feel coupled with Japanese art sensibilities. I feel that this exhibit alone is worth checking out this set of galleries and some of the art work on the walls is for sale). Go to http://www.bbartcenter.org/ for more info. PS – it is free.

With Cheech and Chong coming to town this weekend, do you think I will get a contact high by going to the show? I am also looking forward to MXPX/Lapwagon at St Andrews Hall on the 19th. Don’t forget that the RIC (Russell Industrial Complex) show has been rescheduled for the 21st so maybe I’ll see some of you at that event.

I will be attending the premiere of “Say Goodnight Gracie” on Wednesday night and I’ll have one of the actors on my radio show Thursday morning along with an interview with Dennis Quaid about his upcoming movie “The Express” and a brief mention of GI Joe. Tune in between 8-10AM for that on http://www.wxou.org/.

Also, next Monday if everything works out, I’ll have a great band, Nadir’s Distorted Soul performing life on my Monday morning show. Should be fun!

Also, it’s your last chance for Indian Ocean tickets. 1 pair left. Be the first to send me an email at doramu13@yahoo.com with the header “Indian Ocean” and I’ll give you the hook-up.

Congrats to Steve last week.

Take care and I will see you next week with reviews of Say Goodnight Gracie and a review of the new Greg Kinnear/Tea Leoni movie “Ghost Town”.

Finally got to see Hellboy II which I thought was truly incredible in a year with a lot of good comic book movies (Wanted, Incredible Hulk, Iron Man, Dark Night Returns) and some new ones coming out (The Spirit).

Jamie McCarthy CD Release presented by SPIN and WDET - Magic Bag - Fri Sept 26th

SPIN Magazine and WDET FM 101.9 Present

Brian Vander Ark, Jamie McCarthy and Crashing Cairo at The Magic Bag
Jamie McCarthy Celebrates the Night with a release party for “Salvation”, his new Album

Imagine Hunter S. Thompson and The Beastie Boys sitting at the bar - they’d be sipping Jamie McCarthy’s funky rock brew blended in the inspiration of G. Love and Special Sauce, Jack Johnson and Citizen Cope. Jamie McCarthy is back for round two with Salvation, the follow up album to 2007’s Strange Town. And he’s celebrating with a release party in Ferndale as SPIN magazine and WDET FM 101.9 present Brian Vander Ark, Jamie McCarthy and Crashing Cairo at The Magic Bag on Friday, September 26.

Jamie McCarthy was only 20 when his alt-rock band Modern Cocktail Party scored a deal with Warner Brothers. After a year of touring and a fallen deal with the label, Jamie was swept into the world of commercial and voice over work.

Years later, Jamie was about to embrace the music industry again when his father, legendary Hall of Fame radio host J.P. McCarthy, passed away. Jamie spent years recovering from the setback and finally returned to music after a long hiatus. He began writing music again after a trip to Santa Monica, California, where he saw a homeless man hang himself from a tree on Ocean Avenue. Jamie was deeply moved by the tragedy and the experience inspired him to begin writing a new album. He swore that he’d finish the album and the result was the 2007 release Strange Town.

At that point, Jamie vowed never to take life too seriously. His lyrics took a more confessional tone with an introspective reflection that led to the path of Salvation, the new album.

“I had come to terms with all of my personal confessions on Strange Town,” Jamie explained. “Salvation evolved from Strange Town. It’s more free spirited and less about self-analysis. I was feeling a little more centered during the Salvation recordings even though the first song on the record is about wishing someone who’s broken your heart was dead. So I guess being centered is all relative… lol.

Perhaps the next record will find me totally out of the darkness, but I hope not.”

Jamie recorded Salvation earlier this year at Big Sky Recording in Ann Arbor, MI, with Steve Tocco (Drums, vocals), Patrick Davy (Guitar, vocals) and Geoff Michael (Guitar, bass). Patrick and Geoff also co-produced the album with Jamie.

During the recording of Salvation, the band played an ongoing game of Pass the Bass. All of the players took a stab at playing the bass. Pat and Geoff are much better bass players and they usually won, but Jamie managed to play the bass on Girlfriend and a Check. Jamie also played drums on a few of the tracks – he secretly wants to be a drummer.

But the days weren’t without some tension. On the day when the band recorded Can’t Shake You Out My Head, an aggressive angst-filled song, Jamie turned into a director who wanted to get the best performance from his actors. He threw a fake fit in the studio and told Pat and Geoff that he was unhappy with how the album was coming along. Jamie wanted them to feel the tension, especially in the guitar parts.

“This is very out of the ordinary for me because I'm about as laid back in a studio as they come,” Jamie explained. “They sure captured the mood. After we were done recording I told them I was just messing around. Then I took them out for an amazing dinner and professed my musical love for them.”

After the band finished the recording, they took Salvation on the road for a test drive. They played to about 2,000 people on the Best Buy stage at the Taste of Chicago festival in June and CIMX FM 89.9 radio recently invited him to play an event in Detroit.

In addition, Jamie’s song Meant 4 Me also joins the music of two-time Grammy-winner Ozomatli, Michael Franti and Spearhead, Modest Mouse and other bands in Sometimes in Life, the new independent film directed by Anthony Vallone for ValloNicka Films.

Jamie brings the party to The Magic Bag on Friday, September 26, with Patrick Davy (Guitar, vocals), Sean Harris (Bass) and Steve Tocco (Drums, vocals). Doors open at 8 pm. Tickets are $12. 18+ are welcome.

FREE PAIR OF TICKETS to the 1st eamiler - motorcityblog@earthlink.net

They will be performing to a host of detroit music including The Hardest Button to Button by The White Stripes and others....MCB will be onsite to shoot this for sure

Music Hall Center for the Performing Arts is honored to announce the riveting Complexions Contemporary Ballet out of New York on Friday and Saturday, September 26th and 27th at 8PM both nights.
Artistic Directors Dwight Rhoden and Desmond Richardson, who by The New York Times were “hailed as two of the greatest virtuosos ever to emerge from Ailey land,” founded the company in 1994, and by 1995 they had already received the illustrious New York Times “Critics Choice” award. After receiving the award, Complexions has been touring around the world as “America’s original multicultural dance company” at such prominent venues as the Music Center in Los Angeles, The Brooklyn Academy of Music, and the Bolshoi Theater in Moscow, Russia. In addition, Complexions has been invited to perform at numerous European dance festivals and each time they have stunned the crowd with their imaginative and skillful choreography.
Complexions’ point of departure is classical dance, but the metamorphosis of the resultant dance pieces take on a multitude of styles and disciplines, which culminate into an expression of the human condition and it’s full range of emotions, into a multi-cultural and spiritual celebration.
The Saturday performance offers a special After-Party in a Big Top tent next to the Music Hall.
Inspired by contemporary social issues, Complexions meld awareness with grace and physical dexterity to push the limits of both modern dance and human communication, resulting in a synergy of art and emotion, beauty and expression which is achieved without special effects or technology as they communicate and inform through mankind’s oldest and most personal form of artistic expression- dance.

My Damn Channel Video of Don Was Super Session at Concert of Colors 2008

MOTORCITYBLOG postedour little video last week of The Concert of Colors 2008 which included a few minutes of footage from the detroit super session with Don Was and a slew of other motorcity musicians kicking out the jams on stage at The Max Fisher Theatre last July.

We were just contacted by our friends over at http://www.mydamnchannel.com/ who sent us the link to the completed video of the entire set - check it out here!

"DON WAS DETROIT SUPER SESSION AT THE CONCERT OF COLORS
By John Sinclair

There's always a fantastic variety of great music of many idioms being made in Detroit, but it takes a national breakout to bring any significant local attention to the work of its resident musicians. So they labor on to create new music and maintain their commitment to artistic expression despite the accustomed commercial obscurity and the relentless indifference of their fellow citizens, playing in little joints for friends and neighbors and trying to find an audience for their hard-won musical offerings.

So Don Was lit a big fire in Detroit last fall when he eased into town, locked down the 54 Sound Studio on 9 Mile Road for a long weekend and paraded a wildly diverse collection of contemporary music-makers before the Wasmopolitan video cameras and Steve King's recording console to cut a series of numbers for the website that would spotlight the musical richness and insane variety of the Motor City today. Was is from here--he grew up in Oak Park and he's always known about what goes down in the D--but he's one of the handful of modern Detroiters who's gained international fame and universal acclaim: as producer of his own unique ensemble, Was (Not Was), with David Was, and of hit recordings by Bob Dylan, Bonnie Raitt, the Black Crowes, the Rolling Stones and other established stars...."

pieces, which are often from his passion for motorsports, muscle cars,
motorcycles, Auto Union/Audi. With his artworks, you just don’t get a
picture, but you get the history of the piece.

Artist Statement:
Bryan Young began his art & design career at the tender age of 3;
telling his mom, "When I grow up I want to be a Pontiac!" it was clear
that a passion for cars was in his blood. Growing up with a father,
and grandfather, who loved cars and an architect/artist of a mother,
Bryan was on a path to become an automotive designer and artist.
Throughout his childhood and teen years, Bryan won various art contests around the
Cleveland, OH area. As high school drew to a close and after being
prepped at Kent State University’s industrial Design program, Bryan
transferred to world renowned CCS art school in Detroit, MI. At Center
for Creative Studies, Bryan’s ardor for all things automotive, art and
motorsports propelled him through the acclaimed Transportation Design
program graduating with a BFA in Transportation Design.

Upon graduation Bryan pursued a successful career as an automotive
designer working on projects for a wide range of organizations
including Ford Motor Company, General Motors, Chrysler, International
Truck & Engine Corp, and a variety of freelance clients. A few of his
professional highlights include the acclaimed ProjectXT concept for
International Truck, which was unveiled at the 2005 Chicago Auto Show,
several design patents for various vehicle interior products,
numerous wheel designs, full vehicle exterior and interiors currently
in production, and many other accomplishments.

After obtaining many professional achievements in corporate America, Bryan made the decision to leave the constraints of corporate design in pursuit of his passion of automotive art and design. Bryan’s friends often refer to him as a, "walking automotive encyclopedia."

You see Bryan’s love of color and drama in many of his pieces, which are often from his passion for motorsports, muscle cars, motorcycles, Auto Union/Audi.

With his artworks, you just don’t get a picture, but you get the history of the piece.

WILD AT HEART - Friday Sept 12th 2008

Kirk - Here is my latest blog post for MCB - Wild Bill

Bill Kettelhut provides the "blog" to this anti-blogHe has a radio program on WXOU out of Oakland University

Wild At Heart

Wow, what a busy week. WXOU has been doing numerous events on campus this past week and I just got involved in some projects that took some time away from getting g my blog done on Monday, so I declare this week that Friday is the new Monday so here is my blog for the week.

First off, I want to congratulate the Shock on taking over the top spot in their Eastern Conference, and clinching the top spot for the playoffs, with impressive wins over Phoenix (89-78) and Washington (78-66) at home this week. Katie Smith had an impressive game on Tuesday hitting her three point shots, while Kara Braxton used her size to help dismantle Washington as their big girls got in serious foul trouble in the second half. With one game left, they have a good chance of going to the finals again this year. Despite Ford’s injury, Katie is playing some of her best basketball right now (coming off her Olympic gold medal) and “Tweety” Nolan is still looking good as the WNBA’s answer to Tashawn Prince. Braxton (who seems in her best shape since I have covered the Shock) and Pierson seem to have elevated their game this year which makes them very strong down low. They are also getting good play from Powell and the rest of their supporting cast. I can’t wait for the post season to see if the Shock can bring home championship number 3 to the Palace.

I will be down at the Metro Music Expo this weekend which will be held at the Novi Expo Center Metro Music Expo (September 12 – 14 = Show Hours: Friday: 4 pm – 9 pmSaturday: 12 pm – 9 pm & Sunday: 12 pm – 6 pm). This is an Expo about everything music with the chance to see live music by local artists such as Bear Lake, The Prime Ministers and much more. There are also exhibits from a number of local business’ ranging from 89X, Metrotimes, Record Time, Specs Howard and the Detroit Blues Society. You can also listen to speakers and educational seminars from everyone like Eminem attorney Howard Hertz to musician Amp Fiddler to ASCAP’s Shawn Murphy. Their will also be gear clinics from American Group Sound & Lighting, Dynacord, ElectroVoice, M-Audio and Shure. It should be a fun time so I hope to see some of you there.

For more info, go to www.metromusicexpo.com.

I went to Ann Arbor this week to see Great Big Sea at the Michigan Theatre which was a wonderful show. While in Ann Arbor, I did manage to take in some of the local art scene. I started at the Natural History Museum on campus to take in the new exhibit on “Contempory Brassworking in Ghana” which looks at the tradition of lost-wax casting as practiced among the Akan people of Ghana for the past 500 years. You can see how they do the casting process as well as looking at about 50 brass objects from the region. While there, make sure to check out the second floor which houses their wonderful dinosaur exhibit including their new mastodon skeleton. They also have a small exhibit on the history of pipes.

If you go to the new hospital building, they have a number of art galleries which I took the time to wander. I started off at the University Hospital which had three exhibits. The first was “Orbs Of Brightness” which had the work of Mark A Piotrowski. These cut out shapes are scanned using a computer and handcrafted in vibrant glazes to make them really stand out. The main lobby also had exhibits of the landscape photography of Dale Fisher and silk flowers by Rebecca Lambers. In the spacious lobby, they also have a mock-up of a doctor’s office as it would have looked in 1908 which just adds a little something. The Cancer Center has 2 exhibits which include various artists work in fabrics and an exhibit entitled “Cinderella’s Revenge” which contains a series of high-heeled shoes designed by David Ian Grant.

In the Taubman Lobby, the remaining four exhibits include a series of sculptures made of limestone and steel, various ceramic tiles by local sibling artists Karim and Nawal Motawi and charcoal and pastel portraits by Nancy Swearingen. My favorite exhibit was Steven Huyser-Honig’s exhibits of Michigan Lighthouses. There were a number of pictures which just blew me away by their vibrancy and composition. If nothing else, check out this exhibit before it goes away on Oct 13th to make way for the new exhibits. Also check out the arboretum which is beautiful, complete with a health food restaurant and waterfall.

The campus also has a Dentistry exhibit, an old book exhibit on the top of the main library, the Sterns Musical collection, the Art Galleries, the Gerald Ford Library, and the soon to be open new Art Museum and Archeology Museum. All are free and lots of fun for those that like to explore.

Borders Book Store in Ann Arbor on Fri, Sept 26th – there is a reading and signing with Jamie Lee Curtis for her new book “Big Words for Little People”. Taproot will be performing there on Thurs 18th at 12:30PM. Arrive Early.

Hope every one has a good day and lastly, if you would like to see the contempory jam band Indian Ocean when they perform at the Ford Community and Performing Arts Center in Dearborn on Sept 20th, send an email with the header “Indian Ocean” to mhtml:%7B755F0DA7-D765-4B00-8A96-04A2F674284E%7Dmid://00000043/!x-usc:mailto:doramu13@yahoo.com.

"Man & Nature" - CASS CAFE - Artist Reception Fri Sept 12th 7-10pm

“Man And Nature”
New art by Gary Eleinko at Cass Cafe(August 24 – November 8, 2008)

* Public reception: Friday, September 12, 7 - 10 pm

"Cass Cafe is excited to announce the exhibition “Man and Nature” new art by Gary Eleinko currently on view in the gallery. This exhibition is comprised of mixed media artwork whose imagery is derived from the artists’ personal interests in horticulture, geography and science. The exhibition is a reflection on the effects of mankind’s altering of the natural world, and presents images of what might be considered nature’s revenge on mankind.

Of the work, Mr. Eleinko states: “In previous years or decades, my work usually involved repeating geometric structures and elements, often triangular and x shaped. Since leaving education and a routinized life a couple of years ago, my art also has taken on new directions, becoming less structured and more eclectic. Some of the works relate to plant shapes, forms and fantasies. Others depict forces of nature that have physical presence and destructive power. A third part reflects on the future as man alters nature, depletes resources and is a commentary on the wasteful obsolescence of material goods created for our convenience.”

Mr. Eleinko has been active in the Detroit art community as an artist and educator for the past four decades, and has received numerous awards and honors for his work. He earned both his B.F.A. and M.F.A. in Painting from Wayne State University in Detroit. His work has been exhibited locally and regionally since 1972. Mr. Eleinko produces his art at his Corktown studio, just blocks from his home in the same Detroit neighborhood. The exhibition at Cass Cafe Gallery includes 24 works that range greatly in size, structure and composition.

From small constructions of approximate
