REVIEW: The Hounds Below live at The Empty Bottle Chicago by Von Ecker 9/6/12

Illustration and Review by Von Ecker

Detroit rockers The Hounds Below, made a pit stop in Chicago at The Empty Bottle this past Thursday and of course MCB had to make it out to the show and support our Motor City brethren.

Coming off a recent touring stint promoting their 5 song self titled EP with bands such as BMRC, The Heavy, The Raveonettes, Company of Thieves, The Whigs, The Like, and Band of Skulls -- The Hounds Below gave Chicago a good taste of Detroit city swagger and attitude.

The Hounds Below features ex front man Jason Stollsteimer from the Von Bondies, and has a Roy Orbirson meets garage rock kind of vibe. At first I wanted nothing to do with the band because my short stint of research led me to a hand full of tunes that I wasn’t all to impressed with. I just really wasn’t into the Orbirson-esqueness of it, and I felt like Stollsteimer was trying too hard to sound like old Roy. My attitude changed within a minute and half of their performance.

The four piece band rocked it out in that small club as if they were playing at a larger venue like the United Center. During the live show any resemblance to Roy Orbirson was non existent and the band stood on their own, with the Detroit style of indie rock that I miss so much. The kind of rock that socks you in the gut, knocking the wind out of all your worldly cares and worries, allowing you to live life in the moment.

The set ended all too soon with a cover of the Pixies classic “Were Is My Mind”, leaving me home sick and wanting more.

Motor City rock fans check out The Hounds Below are playing the DIY Street Fair on 9/15 and the boys have announced another Detroit show on  9/21 at The Magic Stick with UK hit-makers, The Heavy. (which BTW we just ran a ticket/vinyl giveaway yesterday here)

RCRD LBL just premiered the lead off single “Chelsea’s Calling” from the full-length “You Light Me Up In The Dark” which drops Oct 9th on Slimstyle Records.

The push is leading up to the big record release show on October 6th at The Loving Touch in Ferndale which will surely pack the place strong.

Get on out and support motorcity music!
