In keeping with the minimalist, Detroit-techno sound that Richie Hawtin creates, I offer up to you my minimalist shots from his performance at Elysium Lounge last Thursday on Thanksgiving Eve. The locale, with its HUGE main room and side bars (with exceptionally hot barmaids!) was as dark as could possibly be imagined with a few smoke machines and laser lights, in addition to the ever-present and overly-marketed PAXAHAU logo being bounced on every wall available. (I wasn't quite sure who was performing, PAXAHAU or Gaiser/Hawtin. Thankfully, it was the latter.) Unlike the other photogs at the show, I chose to not use my flash and completely blind all the DJ's on a regular basis. My shots show you exactly what the venue looked like and the vibe felt like: dark, smoky, pulsating, sexxy and sweaty...just like a good Detroit (via Windsor) DJ set should be. That being said,
Hawtin kicked ass!
The only thing missing was a location a little more befitting his dirty minimalistic style... maybe the Packard Plant (sound familiar?), or one of the many Russell Industrial spaces. Elysium, for all its shine, was too vanilla.
Hawtin is best served in a warehouse...and dirty.
