Show Review: Felix Da Housecat & Anthony Atalla Bleu Detroit Apr. 20

On a day with a series of mishaps it only made sense that I would drive out to Boss Club in a worked up frenzy to see Felix Da Housecat, only to find a barren parking lot. Retaining my “last to know” status, my friend and I quickly scoured our cellphone internet apps to see what happened to the show. After a few minutes of “where the hell is Felix playing” we found out the concert was at the last minute moved to Bleu Detroit, due to a facility problem at Boss Club.

The change in venue was maybe a blessing in disguise as Bleu is a small but comfortable club that already had a fine night planned with Anthony Atalla DJing, so, Felix was the icing on the cake. The night was packed with a well-dressed crowd showing high spirits on the dance floor. Also on high risers were dancers adding some appealing sights to the already impressive night.

Anthony Atalla’s set was a fast moving barrage of percussive house, with several moments of hands in the air and cheers as his set progressed. As the night was running a bit late, we had some thoughts about cutting out before Felix Da Housecat but decided to at least see the beginning of his set. Felix took to the laptop and boards a little after 1am and played a set of eclectic and aggressive dance music, the crowd got an influx of renewed energy and while the space to move was small, everyone was making the most of it.
Felix manages to avoid all the current clichĂ©s attached to electronic music and play his own brand of music that pulls out early acid house, electro, even 70’s and 80’s hits, all weaved together in a frantic mix. Several parts of his show were culled from his latest release “Burn the Disco,” Felix remains one of those rare DJ artists to release high quality original material year after year, never slowing down or repeating himself. After 2am with weary eyes and weak legs we left the night knowing there’d be hell to pay the next day, but we wouldn’t have had it any other way.

Be sure to check out upcoming shows brought to you by Nabil Presents, whatever the location.
