Wild At Heart midweek special

Wild At Heart

How is everyone doing today on this exciting Thursday. I just got back from seeing the new Michael Moore film and will hopefully be interviewing him for an upcoming radio show sometime this weekend. I was getting ready to go to a blues show at Callahan's to see Seth Walker, who delivers a mixture of roots styles including blues, soul and Americana which featuring good ol southern guitar licks. His new album (and 6th) is called "Leap Of Faith" where he has hooked up with hooked up with Grammy Award-winning producer Gary Nicholson who is helping him maintain his Texas blues style but polish it up to help reach a wider audience. Among the songs is a take on Nick Lowe’s “Lately I’ve Let Things Slide” which just shows he has good taste.

If you decide to stay in, make sure you check out my baby Cyndi Lauper who guest stars on the season premiere of Bones in the role of psychic Avalon Harmonia. That is tonight at 8PM EST and then turn over to Diva's Live on VH1 to see her perform. Yea! A double night of Cyndi lauper goodness.

Because of that, I will give the first person to email me at doramu13@yahoo.com a pair of tickets to go see American heavy metal supergroup Down who hopes to get in the studio by October to record their fourth album (tenitively entitled "Down IV"). Opening for them are the Melvins which are an incredible band which started off as a hardcore band back in 1982 along the lines of Black Flag and Flipper and are seen as one of the earlier influences of what became the grunge scene. Melvin's drummer Dale Crover was the drummer for Kurt Cobain's first band Fecal Matter back in '85 which alone makes these hot tickets. Make sure to reply quickly!!

Lastly, did anyone else check out the Shock game as they made good on their home court in game 1 of the Atlanta series. The Dream beat the Shock 3 of 4 games this year and started off the first quarter hot by crashing the boards (15 rebounds to the Shock's 2) and hitting 58.8% shooting from the field. This along with 9 of 9 at the line gave the Dream a commanding 30-16 lead. The second quarter saw much of the same as the Dream grabbed 23 rebounds, 17 on defense along with making 15 of 16 free throws compared to the Shock's 1 of 2. Despite that, the Shock got a small rally and were at least keeping even as the score had the Dream leading 45-36 going into the half. The 3rd quarter was pretty even until Tweety Nolan recieved a technical with 5:45 left in the quarter. This seemed to really spark the Shock along with a wonderful quarter by Braxton which she really attacked the basket in the paint scoring 6 much needed points and followed with 8 in the fourth. By the end of the third, the Shock were surprising in the lead 65-61 and the Dream looked a bit dazed at times. The fourth quarter started stong as the Shock took a ten point lead (the Dream had led by as many as 18 in the first half) based on the play of Braxton and Nolan. Hornbuckle and Zellous also were having career nights which was much needed as both Katie Smith (back problems) and Plenette Pierson (right shoulder) were not in the game. Not making anything easy, some bad shooting down the stretch (despite 57% in the 4th) let the Dream get close and the Shock looked like they might collapse but Nolan took the team and willed them to victory despite going down with 16 sec left in the game to what looked like exhaustion. In what looked like a mistake, 85% free throw shooter went in to take Nolan's free throws after she got carried off the court by teammates after suffering a concussion. She sank both giving the Shock a needed 5 point lead and the final was Shock 94, Dream 89. Coach Mahorn admitted that putting Crystal was not optimal but he looks like a genius since she hit both shots. Leaving the podium he joked that the press conference wasn't that bad but "I'm glad I didn't lose". All-in-all, the Shock have showed the true grit of a team who doesn't always make things easy on themselves but has a hidden resolve that can pull them through if they can tap it. Tonight they did and they will go to Atlanta for the next 2 games on Fri (7:30 on NBA TV) and Sun (3PM on ESPN2). Nolan will be a game time decision.

Enjoy the weekend and tune in this Sat morning to www.wxou.org or 88.3FM for my show this week and a salute to the 80's during WXOU's 80's week is in full effect.
