German Electro-Rock 7-piece Outfit, SUPER 700
Introduces “Lovebites” to the U.S.

You can download Super 700’s
“Someone Stole My Car” mp3 here

If there is one band that truly knows their sound and how to capitalize it, Super 700 might just be it. With eerie and epic rock noises flowing in every direction throughout the bands new album, “Lovebites”, Super 700 is sure to spread its viral bites of love across the ocean from Germany to the American cult-fans of bands like M83 and Goldfrapp.

The MuseBox is proud to have the opportunity to introduce this German electro-rock band and their brand new album (out TODAY!) to the tastemakers and early adaptor fans of American indie-rock culture for the first time.

The number 700 is a sacred number.
The hidden temple has 700 entries, there are 700 sins, 700 famous mountains and the legend of the 700 spices of Alu Ben-Grachier and then there is the “Super 700”. 7 musicians female and male (discounting future ballet ensembles and symphony orchestras), 7 very special talents, 7 maniacs, 7 fine tuned guardians of good taste. Super 700 is not just another band, they are a team. Super 700 are out of this world.

What makes Super 700 so special?
Their artful musicianship, their search for the extraordinary and their determination to be complex is fuelled by the same fire, that fuels all impulsive and hotheaded incarnations of Rock N Roll.

Super 700 are wild and smart, gorgeous and dishevelled, progressive and totally focused, very normal and extremely cool. Only the best can be heroes.

What the first worldwide download “Tango” promised, they delivered with their second album “Lovebites”: 13 tracks that that will wreck royal palaces, illuminate the darkest forests and makes the time disappear while listening on your iPod or your home stereo. “Lovebites” is infectious and addictive, but remains mysterious. Take “S.T.T.S.M.C” (abbreviated for “Somebody Tried To Steal My Car”), a sweet elegant late summer rain pop song or the dangerous and unconventional, “Second In Line” with oriental strings and forceful percussion breaks.

In the song “Rosebud” lead singer Ibadet Ramadani is only being backed up by a guitar and the background vocals of her sisters Albana and Ilirjana, a jazz ballad, like liquid glass. The title track “Lovebites” is inspired by late night horror movies culminating into a bombastic torch song, dangerous and majestic. Guitar and organ entwined like lovers. Like a slipknot around your neck. “Every honey bee is an angel of death” sings Ibadet in “Spring (The Old Pretender)”

Needless to say that Ibadet Ramadani has one of the most exciting, impressive, alluringly and hauntingly wonderful voices with attitude in modern music. The rest of the band: Albana and Ilirjana Ramadani are singing the harmonies, Johannes Saal on guitar, Simon Rauterberg on keyboard, Michael Haves on Bass and Sebastian Schmidt on the drums.

After Super 700 emerged as Berlin’s number one underground darlings, they released their debut self titled album in May 2006 on Motor Music. They created waves on their consequent tour that also took them to Los Angeles and Vancouver.

They played the Viper Room and The Key Club and performed in the studio of the radio station KCRW, as a guest of the world famous show “Morning Becomes Eclectic” – after DJ Nic Harcourt personally invited them, after he saw one of their shows. The songs for Lovebites were written by Ibadet and Bassplayer Michael early 2008 in France. The album is produced by Irishman Rob Kirwan (U2, Depeche Mode) and was recorded and brilliantly completed in the Planet Rock studios in Berlin.

If you still doubt the heroic qualities of the Berlin 7 piece, just listen to this record! All doubters should list as well. Super 700 is on its way. They left their Lovebites on our necks.

DEASTRO

(Detroit, MI)

Ghostly International

Listen to "Parallelogram"

Motorcity's DEASTRO has been playing to packed houses here in the DIEtroit for a few years now and is making another trip to SXSW - his next single to be released will be on the newest Detroit based record label called Five Three Dial Tone as its virgin release.

From our friends of at These United States:
Hey Kirk,
Here's a link to the new track we're circulating from Crimes,

THESE UNITED STATES:MID-BY-MOUNTAIN-WEST TOUR
Will debut songs from upcoming third album at SXSW

Reawakening from third-album-induced hibernation, These United States knock the snow off their boots and continue their tireless quest to trace every line on the U.S. map in March and April. After releasing 2 albums and playing 200 shows in 2008, the DC-Kentucky- psych-folk-lit-pop rockers are rumbling surely towards the next benchmarks in a long string of critical acclaim, including several Best of 2008 mentions for Crimes and A Picture of the Three of Us..., and features on NPR's "All Things Considered," Paste, Filter, Village Voice, Brooklyn Vegan,Daytrotter, My Old Kentucky Blog, The Onion, Jambase, KEXP, WOXY, and KCRW.

JAMES ZABIELA Renaissance
The Masters Series
Available Digitally / Physical March 31st
JZ returns to his spiritual compilation home to confirm the mounting buzz surrounding his first Masters Series…Ask anyone what their favourite compilations are and, invariably, James Zabiela’s ALiVE and Utilities will feature amongst them… Then, ask anyone what their favourite compilation series is and, invariably, Renaissance Masters Series will also crop-up… Put the two together and you have the recipe for one of the most eagerly anticipated dance compilations of 2009.“I’m delighted to step-up and join the ranks of The Masters Series,” says an ever-humble JZ, “It’s produced some incredible comps over the years and, albeit nervously (lol!), am relishing the opportunity of joining its ranks.”

“After recently completing the comp’ I can’t wait for it to hit the shelves. I haven’t done a solo compilation in over two years so I really went to town on it,” he adds. And he isn’t kidding… James has produced two incredible discs that differ, yet compliment each other perfectly. Disc One – Down is what James describes as an ‘audio travelogue’, an intricately produced collage of beautiful electronica over-laid with his own ‘field recordings’, a suite of ambient sounds and spoken word that represent both his journeys on the road and in the air, and time and thoughts between gigs.

The result is one of the most beautiful, unique mixes to emerge in recent years.

In 2006 James was awarded the People's Choice accolade as 'Best International DJ' at the Australian Dance Music Awards. In 2007 he was awarded the Best British DJ at the DJ Mag Best British DJ Awards.

For More on James Zabiela:
The true story of the "Best Friends" hit squad finally revealed!

Taking place over the course of two decades, the story of the Best Friends organized crime syndicate—a notorious Detroit-based, all-black mafia dedicated to contract killings and the wholesale cocaine drug trade—major dealers with shipments directly from Columbian drug cartels. The Feds identified the gang as the first to monopolize the I-75 corridor: the distribution route that moved Colombian drugs from Miami to Detroit.

Later, their sophisticated McDonald's-esque retail franchise model allowed them to expand drug trafficking operations outside of Detroit to over fifty major cities. Their unwavering taste for violence left a wake of over a hundred known murder-for-hire hits and an unrivaled reputation. Their multi-million dollar flamboyant lifestyle allowed them to socialize with the celebrated likes of Mike Tyson to Mary J. Blige.

The organization's extensive social connections also fostered a last minute aborted hit on now-famous former target – Sean "P. Diddy" Combs. Some times its OK to walk the other way when you love your friends and you know that the road they have chosen is the wrong road. Brian ''Champtown'' Harmon tours the world with Kid Rock, deejays for Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Sammy Hagar's Cabo Wabo Radio, and runs his own Straight Jacket record label. He also teaches and is the artists and industry coordinator at the Institute of Production and Recording, a media-intensive private college in Minneapolis, MN.

The love of hip hop saved his life. Champ says he owes it all to LL Cool J, Whodini, Run DMC, The Fat Boys, and the business mind of Russel Simmons, all for being such positive influences and keeping him focused on something to live for, a goal to shoot for.

"I played in the sandbox with members of the Best Friends," says Harmon,
"so it was very easy for me to join that gang.
But I didn't."

Beast
Release Date: March 3, 2009
A lot of great artists have come out of Montreal, a city that recently has given the world such celebrated bands as Arcade Fire and The Stills. Out of this vibrant music scene comes Beast, a new collaboration between Jean-Phi Goncalves, leader of his own cutting edge electro band Plaster and also an established platinum level producer (Ariane Moffat, Pierre Lapointe, Daniel Bélanger, Lauryn Hill), and acclaimed singer Betty Bonifassi (DJ Champion, The Triplets of Belleville soundtrack).

On the strength of its richly panoramic debut album and recent arrival as a galvanizing live band, Beast is off and running. The album is due for a March 3 release on Verve Forecast, but the song “Mr. Hurricane” was offered November 4, 2008 as iTunes Single of the Week. Not just in Canada, but wherever this important new bellwether is featured around the world.
The dynamic duo met in Montreal, but both are from France. Growing up in Angouleme (a town northeast of Bordeaux), Goncalves started at music conservatory when he was seven years old. He picked up drums at 10, and opted to continue his studies in Canada for college. Betty, who was born to a Czechoslovakian mother and Italian father in the French town of Nice, is more self taught, learning from singing along to many of the great jazz and soul singers. She also dug into the work of Jimi Hendrix and Led Zeppelin as well as horn players like John Coltrane and Chet Baker. “With Chet, all the singing was a continuation of his playing,” she explains. “I love that about listening and learning horn solos or guitar solos.” The result is a big voice that recalls the texture and sass of Shirley Bassey and Grace Jones and the dark subtlety of modern day singers like Beth Orton and Portishead’s Beth Gibbons.

After Plaster and DJ Champion shared some bills together, Goncalves, who plays drums in Plaster and Beast, invited the singer to come into the studio to add vocals to some unpolished pieces he was working on. Something immediately clicked, and that first session yielded “Devil,” the opening track. “I came in with text that I wrote, and the song came in an hour,” Betty recalls. “It was just obvious that there was something there.”

That something is a vibe and sound that inhabits a place where the cinematic grandeur of Portishead meets the immediacy of Rage Against the Machine. With help from lyricist Simon Wilcox, Betty strikes a balance between telling vividly detailed stories and still adhering to the concise songwriting structure of pop. Soul, rap, electro, rock and jazz (complete with a Charles Mingus bass sample on “Satan”) collide in Beast. “Trip rock,” Betty calls it, the phrase invoking the way haunting choirs and glitchy electronic bits run underneath saw-toothed bass and grinding guitars.

While the recording process took two years, Beast took to the stage for the first time, at an industry showcase in Montreal in 2008. Both seasoned performers, which no doubt separates them from many of the technologically savvy bands who record these days, Beast conquered the crowd and have since made quick work of becoming one of the most talked-about live acts in the Canadian music scene. At an inaugural Toronto performance, and with only a handful of live shows under their belts, Beast scored a perfect 100% on their NXNE Report Card from ChartAttack.

It was an accolade that was well deserved with Jean-Phi and Betty augmented live by guitarist Serge Nakauchi-Pelletier and “keybassist” Jonathan Dauphinais.
Throughout conversations with Betty and Jean-Phi, there is talk of contrast and dynamics. Beast also toys with dynamics in the live setting, projecting a rawer version of the band that is decidedly different than the studio project. According to Jean-Phi, “I love both settings, the aspect that it lasts on the record and that live it does not. I never like to see a live show that is the same as the record. ”

This quest to keep things new and mixed seems to be the mission statement for the two. “Jean-Phi is very fresh,” Betty points out. “He can change the music around in just a day. He keeps the ideas from before, but takes them in a new direction. There were no boundaries, and I love that.” For his part, Jean-Phi adds, “She always sings like it’s the last time in her life, and to me that’s inspiring.”

It all adds up to a Janus-like live band and studio project. Compelling in different ways and full of surprises, Beast will be a band to watch beyond Canada as 2009 unfolds.

ACEYALONE PREPS FOR RELEASE OF ACEYALONE & THE LONELY ONES
& pays tribute to the influential doo-wop genre.

The Los Angeles rapper and founding member of Freestyle Fellowship, Haiku D’Etat and Project Blowed, Aceyalone returns with Aceyalone & The Lonely Ones, which draws on Phil Spector, 60s girl groups, the J.B.s and a slew of raw, dirty funk for sonic inspiration.

For legendary emcee Aceyalone, being out of the norm has paradoxically always been the norm. After indulging his love of Jamaican music for 2007’s Lightning Strikes, the musically diverse emcee brings his admiration for doo-wop, blues and funk to the forefront. On the title track, finger snaps, falsetto choruses and Rickenbacker guitar dominate the production, a sound closer to Phil Spector’s Wall of Sound than today’s by-the-numbers beats. “What it Wuz” recalls the same era, but looks more towards Motown and Holland/Dozier/Holland production to emulate and update classic soul groups (think Martha & the Vandellas, Four Tops). “To the Top [Remix],” with its classic Bo Diddley beat, conjures up images of an early-20th century juke joint on Saturday night, while “Can’t Hold Back” is pure grimy funk, showcasing Aceyalone’s faux-bandleader personage as much as his emcee side. In true James Brown form, the emcee genially barks instructions to his band and engages the crowd in a rowdy call-and-response.

“I’m not from that era, but this is my ode to it,” says the emcee of the album’s feel. “I’m just putting myself into that character as a showman and bandleader. But I can still rhyme with the best of them. Artists are going to experiment and go different places and I love that whole era anyway.”

In stark contrast to the quantity-over-quality approach favored by so many emcees, Aceyalone has always prided himself on quality control. Aceyalone & The Lonely Ones is no exception. With Lonely Ones, Aceyalone along with producer Bionik, strikes down sonic boundaries and throwing the listener back to a time when music was pure, energetic, and fun. Aceyalone & The Lonely Ones isn’t just a collection of songs, but an album where every part is essential to its meaning.

In 1995, the emcee released his debut solo album All Balls Don’t Bounce, earning massive critical acclaim and Allmusic.com declaring Aceyalone “one of the greatest lyricists the West Coast has ever produced” and Bounce “a spectacular lyrical milestone.” Since then, the emcee has released eight more solo albums, with 2006 alone seeing the release of two albums. “You might say I’m prolific,” says Aceyalone, “but I’m still a work in progress. I’m just a conveyer of what’s already out there and people just don’t see it. I just interpret it.”

Aceyalone & The Lonely Ones represents another chapter in a consistently evolving career for the emcee. And after nine solo albums and countless more with others, there’s still a whole novel to go.

Aceyalone & The Lonely Ones will be in stores March 31, 2009.

free vinyl for MCB - thanks! New Grenada!

So last night unlike most Friday evenings where I have 5 venues in mind to hit my plan was simple - the photographers knew where they had to be and I was going to catch a show and not do any of the usual MCB bullshit - simply just catch a show and I had noticed that a band that I had not seen live yet was playing at The Belmont - New Grenada

so with that in mind I had set out and without divulging any of the details

- my plan failed
i never made it to the show and this morning was up early wondering what I missed as I poured over the freebie pile - I opened one of the 12" packages that came in and found out that New Grenada sent us an un-solicited vinyl of the new record

now we get a lot of vinyl here at the MCB
- BUT - we usually know its coming

CDs are different - we get those non-stop without knowing about it but when you get a nice new fresh 12" vinyl from a great local band without asking for it

well that deserves a listen ASAP and loud

"Energy Shortage" slipped onto the turntable smoother than ever and I slowly had the system jacked to high heaven as the 1st song started to dig in for good...it rocked but the next door neighbor wasnt too happy about that so the rest of the record got a listen at regular dB levels -- Starting your weekend with a great record on the wheel just cant be beat

Catch New Grenada over at Small's Bar in Hamtramck next month - March 14th for what I am sure is a great live show - look for me in the crowd!

"Energy Shortage" made our day!

PHOTOS - NICO VEGA @ BLING PIG

Yes yes, we have heard about the Von Bondies and their new CD. They have been written up in the Free Press and everywhere else. They put on a great show.

But I want to tell/show you the band that KICKED ASS. A few weeks ago my friend (and new MOTORCIRTYBLOG contributor) Rebecca said "You have to see this band". And with that I had my tickets to see Nice Vega who happened to be opening for the Von Bondies at the Blind Pig in A2 last Saturday.

It was great to watch a whole audience go from not knowing them to becoming instant fans. The energy was amazing and the lyrics are solid. After the show they even took the time to meet and talk with us. Very cool bunch you would want to share a beer with.

FREE TICKETS: Drumline LIVE! - Music Hall Detroit - Sat/Sun Mar 14/15th

MCB has a free pair of tickets ready to roll to the 1st emailer
the tickets are gone man!

DrumLine Live is more than 40 musicians and dancers from the nation’s top historically black colleges and university marching bands will bring their infectious enthusiasm and athleticism to the Music Hall Center for the Performing Arts, for two performances, Saturday, March 14th at 8PM and Sunday, March 15th at 3PM.

Inspired by the 2002 film, Drumline, DRUMLine Live is a theatrical production that brings the music and dance from the film to the concert stage.“DRUMLine Live showcases the talent and creativity of the musicians and performers in much greater detail than the movie,” Music Director Don Roberts explained.

“Nothing compares to the power of hearing a band live or seeing the dazzling choreography up close. This is a musical revue with all the glitz of the stage and all the funk of an HBCU (Historically Black Colleges and Universities) halftime performance.”

The idea for the stage show came to Roberts years ago, back when he worked as executive band consultant for the 2002 box office hit, "Drumline."The tradition of show style marching began more than fifty years ago within the HBCU and has since grown into a sport of its own. Show style marching features high stepping, funky dance rhythms, repertoire that ranges from classical to today’s hits and the signature “drum line face-off” where each band’s percussion section “battles” for the top spot on the field.

In addition to the drum line face-off, musical numbers in DRUMLine Live include Aretha Franklin’s “Respect,” James Brown’s “I Feel Good” and Tina Turner’s “Proud Mary” along with surprise selections from today’s top pop and R&B artists. Most performers are recent college graduates in their early to mid-twenties and hail from top HBCU schools including Florida A&M, Tennessee State, Southern University, Miles College, South Carolina State, Winston-Salem State, Morris Brown College and Norfolk State University.About DRUMLine LiveThe show-stopping new attraction, DRUMLine Live, brings the black marching band tradition to the theatrical stage for the very first time.

Featuring a large cast of colorful and flamboyant performers from America’s top Historically Black Colleges and Universities, the production presents the rousing and rhythmic sounds of the great brass past including Earth, Wind and Fire and Tower of Power side-by-side with the hottest contemporary hip-hop and R&B.

The stirring sound of trumpets, explosive choreography and incredible feats of athleticism from the "steppers” and dancers, will bring the audience to its feet. But the heart of the show is unquestionably the talented group of African American percussionists who form the "drumline." The showdown of rhythm and speed between the "lines" will shock you with its precision and pulsing force.

A glimpse into an American experience that many have never seen before; this historic tradition is alive with intensity.

Detroit Kennel Club Dog Shows - Cobo Hall Detroit - Sat Sun Feb 28th March 1st 2009

102nd and 103rd Detroit Kennel Club Dog Shows
February 28 & March 1, 2009 at Cobo Center
Annual shows offer star of Marley & Me
and special family value pack ticket deal

The Detroit Kennel Club Dog Shows return to Cobo Center to entertain and educate dog lovers from all over the Midwest. The two-day Celebration of Dogs, proudly presented by Purina, allows visitors up-close and personal time with breeders, owners, handlers and over 2,000 dogs from the 161 breeds recognized by the American Kennel Club. Two special guests will be on exhibition at this year’s shows: “Uno,” winner, 2008 Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show and one of the stars of “Marley & Me” (shhh..and yes, he is a Yellow Lab).

Dog aficionados are invited to pack the Best in Show ring stands on Saturday night for the taping of the 102nd DKC Dog Show for later broadcast on ESPN and ESPN2.

Tickets are $12 for adults and $8 for children (under 12) and senior citizens (60 and over). Children under the age of two are free. Family packs (2 adults, 3 children) are also on sale for $35. Tickets will be sold separately for each show and are good only for that day’s show.
Group rates are available by calling (248) 540-5206.
Dogs will be on display to the public and demonstrations will run from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Best in Show will go into the ring approximately 6:00 PM each day.

The DKC Dog Shows are one of only six benched American Kennel Club (AKC) shows left in the United States (Chicago, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Portland and New York).

The benched format show is demanding on both exhibitors and their dogs, but worthwhile for all because of the public support and appreciation. Visitors can leave with the show catalog containing a breeder’s directory that is a year-long reference for local veterinarians, breeders and show spectators, and is considered “the local source” for a good breed referral.

The 102nd DKC Show will take place on Saturday, February 28, and the103rd show will follow on Sunday, March 1. The 102nd show Group and Best-In-Show Judging will be packaged into a 90-minute television special, The ESPN Show Dog Championship, to air on ESPN and ESPN 2 a total of four times in 2009.

If you have never attended the DKC Dog Show it is so much more than what you see on TV with various other events outside of the standard judging including pet related vendors and family entertainment....check it out and support the Detroit Kennel Club in 2009!

Jeff Nolan ~ MOTORCITYBLOG Detroit Artist Spotlight

MCB's Derek Ecker has been harassing local detroit artists on a monthly basis
He is a recent CCS graduate and a pretty damn good artist to boot:
Derek: Alright Jeff your in the hot seat with MCB's Detroit Artist Spotlight...
It's time for some serious Q & A.!
Derek: Jeff tell us a little about yourself, how long have you been painting and what were some of your earliest influences in your art?
Jeff Nolan: As a child I made little illustrated books about dinosaurs, so not much has changed there. I loved Dr. Seuss, technical drawings, and the album artwork in my parents record collection. While I was growing in school my notebooks were more or less sketchbooks.. I didn't really begin painting seriously until college, but have been painting everyday for the past six years or so.
Derek: Finish this sentence. I never paint in the......
Jeff Nolan: in the nude, in the dark, while I'm asleep, in the morning, in the bathroom, in zero-gravity, in a house, with a mouse, in a box, with a fox, in the car, on a star, on a train, in the rain, in a tree, with the bees, in a boat, with a goat, here or there, anywhere... I set out to become a painter and still primarily paint, but as of late I generate an idea or concept and consider the medium to best express my idea. I have found myself producing cardboard cutouts, video installations, digital pieces, ect.
Derek: Tell me a little about the Lollybot Collective?
Jeff Nolan: About two years ago my roommate Matthew Pritchard and I were both doing shows and going to a lot of art and music shows and we sort of realized together that the same groups of people were going to all of these different things, so we thought up a way to put all of these great artists and musicians together working toward the same ends. Scrummage University, whom we have worked with on all Lollybot shows, inspired us after we saw that they were totally DIY and very successful at it. “We could totally do this with art” was the conversation we had.
Derek: So your kind of an art hustler, you curate shows, work at a gallery, do the freelance thing and paint for the shows in Detroit's underground gallery scene. How do you find time to juggle it all, did you kidnap the Kebler Elves and force them into slave labor art camps?
Jeff Nolan: I have become really good at recruiting others to help me get it all done. Its mostly a matter of sending thousands of emails to everyone I meet and it eventually leads to the next thing. I get it all done by keeping busy on work all day and night and sleeping very little.
Derek: In your opinion who is the best and worst artists of all time?
Jeff Nolan: Da... da. dauh.. This is a tough one because my tastes are always changing, but at the moment I would say the best or my favorites are Duchamp, Barry McGee, Henry Darger, Dr. Seuss, Bridget Riley. There is a lot of bad art, but the worst is Andy Warhol, despite the fact that I love his work its mostly quite bad. Shepard Fairey, Milton Avery, and Henry Matisse are some of my least favorite.

Derek: Is it true you eat paint, and if so which color tastes the best?
Jeff Nolan: I can't say that I have, but I imagine anything with cadmium would taste best. Strangely titanium white gouache smells like lemons.
Derek: Ok so your dropped of and stuck at a shitty airport for two days and can only bring three items what are they?
Jeff Nolan: My laptop, credit card, and a notebook.
Derek: Where do draw you influence for your characters?
Jeff Nolan: I Steal my ideas from friends and the people around my house. I show my work to anyone who is around, occasionally someone will have a good idea.
Derek: What's the meaning of life?
Jeff Nolan: The existentialist Albert Camus asserts that the absurdity of the human condition is that we search for external values and meaning in a world which has none, and is indifferent to us.

Who is the real Jeff Nolan?

Derek: Whats coming up next for Jeff Nolan and the Lollybot Collective?

Jeff Nolan: February 28th we have a show at Izzy's Raw Art Gallery in Corktown, it is an effort in forcing our artists to think conceptually instead of illustratively or reactionary. There are always ideas in the works, without divulging too much about what we are doing prematurely, we are working on a series exhibitions at the Garment District in Roseville, and have in the works a big show tentatively called CHILD'S PLAY.

We have been working on reaching out to other groups in Detroit and abroad, RESTRICTIONS will feature artists from Detroit, Atlanta, Boston, and San Fransisco.

Star Trek Exhibit - Detroit Science Center -

At MCB we try not to neglect our nerdish readership.
STAR TREK: THE EXHIBITION • Feb. 14-Sept. 7, 2009

This interactive exhibit lets fans explore the ‘Star Trek’ universe hands-on with attractions, sets, costumes and props from 5 TV series and 10 feature films.

STAR TREK THE EXHIBITION made its Midwest debut at the Detroit Science Center on Feb. 14, 2009, for a limited engagement. This multi-city touring exhibition contains the world’s most comprehensive collection of authentic Star Trek ships, set re-creations, costumes and props from 5 television series and 10 films over the last 40+ years.

This unparalleled experience enables the public to step inside the Star Trek universe and become active participants in the legacy that has captivated our imagination for generations. Whether it is sitting on a recreation of the original U.S.S. Enterprise bridge or traveling through space on motion simulators, STAR TREK THE EXHIBITION fully immerses visitors in the legendary television adventure that has become synonymous with scientific innovation and ingenuity.

Highlights of STAR TREK THE EXHIBITION include:
• A detailed recreation of the bridge from the USS Enterprise NCC-1701 as featured in the original Star Trek television series. Visitors can stand on the Enterprise bridge
and have their photo taken.

• Re-creations of original sets from Star Trek: The Next Generation, including Captain Picard’s quarters and command chair.

• A chance to ride through a Star Trek adventure in a full-motion flight simulator.

• A full-scale recreation of the Transporter Room from Star Trek: The Next Generation.
For more information call 313.577.8400.
Photography is not allowed in the exhibition.
I have always thought STAR TREK
was one of the coolest shows ever made
Maybe it was because it was the 1st of its kind
and it was put out by a fledgling studio called Desilu
(owned by Ricky and Lucy)
As someone who has been named Kirk most of my life
I have heard every Captain Kirk joke and reference you could think of over the years.
James T Kirk was a pretty cool dude until he starting smoking space dust - wearing wigs - producing silly records and being the class A dork he has turned into nowadays hocking cheap hotel rooms and stuff
Click on the pic above and see how you can score

Escape the Fate - Crofoot Ballroom - Sat Feb 28th

ESCAPE THE FATE
SATURDAY FEBRUARY 28th 2009
doors at 6pm
tickets: $15 in advance

After honing their skills on the road most recently with Chiodos and Silverstein, Escape the Fate are set to headline their own, 6 week US tour, with a stop at the Crofoot Ballroom on February 28. Tickets for all shows go on sale Saturday December 13. Main support on the tour courtesy of Florida's Black Tide with additional support from Attack Attack, William Control (Aiden) and Burn Halo (ex 18 Visions).

Escape the Fate's recent release This War is Ours has kept the scene buzzing since its release on October 21 via Epitaph Records. Introducing vocalist Craig Mabbit (formerly of Blessthefall) and produced by John Feldmann (the Used, Story of the Year), the new record caused the mighty Buzznet.com to crash when a flurry of fan activity surrounding the release of the first single "The Flood" overwhelmed the social networking giant's servers.

And its only gotten crazier. But while ETF's fans are growing more rabid by the day, the Las Vegas quartet is enjoying a new-found maturity and work-ethic, unusual for a young band that Alternative Press summed up succinctly as "a bunch of kids who went from jamming in a garage to opening for My Chemical Romance to being one of the most popular bands in the scene in 18 months."

A night filled with alternative acoustic music blended with indie and soul, coming to the Royal Oak Music Theatre on Wednesday March 11th, 2009.

Missy Higgins, a 24 year old Australian native, has recently has been enjoying phenomenal success in her homeland. Her style of music that she's adopted has a timeless approach, relying on her undeniable songs and unforgettable live performances to forge a genuine connection with her audience. Higgins began her music career singing standards when she was 13 years old in her older brother’s band. In 2001, Missy was ushered into the limelight after winning a national songwriting competition held by a very influential national radio station. Instead of jumping at the opportunity to kick-start her career, she chose to backpack around Europe.

When she returned in late 2003 she released her self-titled EP that reached the top of the indie charts. Airplay on L.A.’s tastemaker station, KCRW, led to a stateside deal with Warner Brothers Records. Her new album, “On a Clear Night,” was awarded the Highest Selling Australian album of 2007 and she was crowned with another ARIA Award (Australia’s version of the Grammy’s) as the country’s “Best Female Artist” for the second time. The new album, produced by Mitchell Froom, (Paul McCartney, Elvis Costello, and Crowded House) reflects Missy’s newfound confidence and changing worldview through the quiet strength of her new songs. For more information visit www.missyhiggins.com

Justin Nozuka is a 20 year old Japanese-American who was born in New York and raised in Toronto, he is the sixth of seven children. He hails from a talented family which includes his aunt Kyra Sedgwick (wife of Kevin Bacon), Warhol superstar Edie Sedgwick, and his brother Philip (Chester Hosoda from televisions Degrassi: The Next Generation). Nozuka’s style blends elements of neo-soul, old-time blues and pop; having the guts of Ray Lamontagne and the soul of Lauryn Hill.

During his short, yet growing career, Justin has shared the stage with greats like John Cale, Crowded House, and Ziggy Marley as well as up-and-comers Sam Roberts, Jully Black, and Xavier Rudd. Justin has had the opportunity to play his “superior acoustic soul…” at the Irish music festival Oxygen, T in the Park, and the South by Southwest Music Festival in Austin, TX. In February 2008, Nozuka was nominated for a Juno Award and in March of 2009 will be joining John Mayer for Mayercraft 2.

His debut album Holly is named after his mother who has supported his chosen career in music. For more information visit www.justinnozuka.com

NEBBIA at MUSIC HALL FEB 27th - March 1st

Nebbia

Music Hall Proudly presents Cirque Éloize: NEBBIA (Italian for fog), the third part of the Sky Trilogy, which takes inspiration from the most ethereal of the elements, fog, for three amazing performances, Friday, February 27 (8PM), Saturday, February 28th (8PM) and Sunday, March 1st (3PM). This heady combination of art, circus, acrobatics and theatre blurs the boundaries between all of these disciplines creating a unique performance experience that will leave you breathless.

Wild, witty, wet and altogether winning. - New York Times

Éloize: Pronounced [EL-WAZ] is a word that comes from the Magdalen Islands and means “flashes of heat lightning seen on the horizon”. As an inspiration for the troupe's founding members, this lightning symbolizes the heat and energy that feed the troupe's spirit.

Cirque Éloize: NEBBIA is the third part of the Sky Trilogy in which the fog takes center stage and reality is transformed into dreamy surrealist environment, blending acrobatic theater and modern circus.
NEBBIA is directed by Daniele Finzi Pasca and co-produced by Cirque Éloize and Teatro Sunil. Following upon Nomade and Rain, NEBBIA completes the trilogy dedicated to the sky.

NEBBIA is at the crossroads where acrobatic theatre, modern circus, and performance come together, Emotion and sensuality exudes through the music and singing in the collaborative process embraced by Cirque Éloize and Teatro Sunil. The musical score for this new creation becomes a character in its own right, carrying on a dialogue with the twelve on-stage performers.

It's not just the circus. It's pure poetry. - Le Parisien

One of the leaders of the circus arts revival, Cirque Éloize has been creating moving performances filled with magic since 1993. Based on the multidisciplinary talents of its artists, Cirque Éloize expresses its innovative nature through theatricality and humanity, and combines circus arts with music, dance and theatre in a break-through and original manner. With six original productions to its credit, Cirque Éloize has presented more than 3,000 performances in 330 cities and 30 countries located around the world. GOMORRAH - Detroit Film Theatre - 2 week run!

Detroit Film Theatre
Martin Scorsese presents GOMORRAH
February 27 - March 8, 2009
(Italy/2008—directed by Matteo Garrone)

“From Roberto Saviano’s bestselling 2006 book about the international influence of the Italian organized crime empire known as the Camorra, Matteo Garrone has made an electrifying mob movie set in Naples that will impress and unnerve even the most demanding aficionados of the genre. In this deft interweaving of five stories, the Camorra’s reach extends from the heights of haute couture to the depths of toxic waste, coolly observing the accompanying brutality. The great Neapolitan director and actor Toni Servillo heads a strong cast as a lethally smooth businessman who specializes in the illegal dumping of corporate poisons. Tony Soprano and his crew would run in terror.” –2008 New York Film Festival.

WILD AT HEART - Monday Feb 23rd 2009

Hey kirk - whats the happening ??
Wild Bill Ketelhut provides the "blog" to this anti-blog
He has a radio program on WXOU out of Oakland University

WILD AT HEART

TICKET GIVEAWAY:
First person to respond to this POST VIA EMAIL will get a pair of tickets to see indie band Asobi Seksu (Japanese for casual sex) at the Pike Room on 3/05/09. They are supporting their new album “Hush” which I have been playing on my show.

I hope it is a good day for everyone out there. I started my new job today and it has been exciting, esp having been unemployed for the past year. It really feels good to start fresh and meeting new people (and getting back together with some old friends). For those out there that are still having difficulties on the job front, stay strong and don’t be afraid to seek out help if you need it. There are a number of agencies and groups that can offer support in the tough times. Also, if you get a job, make sure you show up on time and leave extra early that first day. I ended up getting caught for 20 minutes behind an auto accident so I was glad I left an hour early. Nothing makes a bad impression like being late your first day.

Saw the new film “Fanboys” which tells the story of four friends circa 1998 who are all Star Wars fans and counting down the days to the new Star Wars film, The Phantom Menace. One of the friends is suffering from cancer and wants to see the film before his death so they plot to break into Skywalker Ranch and steal an early print of the film. They drive across the country in their Millennium Falcon inspired van and encounter all kinds of obstacles from rabid Star Trek fans, a gay biker gangs and Las Vegas pimps. They also meet an array of guest stars including Carrie Fisher, Kevin Smith, Ray Park and a truly inspired William Shatner cameo which might make the film worth watching by himself. The four friends are OK in their roles but none of them really stand out in this film. Gal pal Kristen (Veronica Mars) Bell is also very pleasing on the eyes in this film and very sexy for the fanboy types (like me). While the film is one of the better
films of this type, I’m not sure it will translate to a more diverse audience but it should please most fans of Star Wars or sci-fi geeks. My grade is a B-.

My new Sat show (8-10AM on WXOU 88.3FM or online at www.wxou.org ) is going to be filled with a number of interviews which you can check out on my MySpace page – WWW.MYSPACE/wildatheart_13

One of them is Melinda Doolittle who has her first full length album, “Coming Back To You”, out in stores. She was in town on Sunday at Border’s performing a few tracks and I must say she does have a great voice (even better than that year’s winner Jordan Sparks who I wasn’t overly impressed with when I saw her). Melinda told me she started out tone deaf and had to work to get to where she was, eventually doing back-up vocals for Aaron Neville and CeCe Winans among others before a friend encouraged her to try out for American Idol. Now she can pick her own background singers, most of which were friends of hers. If you want to hear more about this, tune in Sat morning for the full interview. I’ll also be taking to a cast member of Fiddler On The Roof, local author/journalist Denise Crittendon about the state of Detroit and her new children’s self-help book and a cast member of the Ringwald’s new production, “The Bad Seed”. I might even play a few songs

I hate to say it, but not much stands out on the concert scene for me this week. The Claire Lynch Band will perform at the Ark in Ann Arbor on Friday. I found her voice stunning at the Folk Festival this year so if you missed that, you might want to check out her show. Saturday is the big day with the sold out Sam Roberts show at St Andrews (he is doing a River appearance at the Hard Rock Café earlier in the day which you can check out if you have the time), Ann Arbor electro-pop artists My Dear Disco will be at TNT’s Bar & Grill in Clinton TWP and Nickelback with Seether & Saving Abel are down at Joe Louis.

On Sunday, you can check out soul singer Clarence Carter, Bobby Blue Bland and R&B singer Latimore (best known for his hit "Let's Straighten It Out") at the Motor City Blues Festival at the Detroit Opera House.

Hope you have a good weekend and see you next week. - Wild Bill

Adler Birthday Superparty - Lager House - Sat Feb 28th 2009

Its Carries Bday at Lager House
come on out for 4 great detroit bands and buy her a few drinks!
PJ's Lager House
1254 Michigan Ave
Corktown - Detroit

Saturday, February 28 2009
Gardens w/Silverghost, The Sisters Lucas, Dooley Wilson/John Roundcity
10pm
$5

It's Carries birthday!
She'll be there with bells on.

Gardens are Detroit's leading avant garde group. Lo-fi, distorted and immeasurably catchy, Gardens will blow you away with their energy and exponentially increasing popularity and artistry. It's like The Velvet Underground, The 13th Floor Elevators and The Sonics had a musical baby.

Silverghost is the latest project of Marcie Bolen and Deleano Acevedo. True to form, the duo's music is catchy, edgy and danceable. Silverghost has a 7" released on the eternally hip Italy Records and gain new fans every bloody time they play!

The Sisters Lucas (that's twins Julie and Loretta Lucas) are making their triumphant return to PJ's Lager House. These gals will steal your heart and your ears with their beautiful and captivating music. This is folk music for the modern era-- a true appreciation for simpler times past meets that odd Motor City glamor in a way that can only be pulled off by this pair. Their new 7", just out at the end of 2008 on Bellyache Records, will be available for purchase at the show.

Toledo's own Dooley Wilson (Boogaloosa Prayer, formerly of The Young Lords and Henry & June) is back in the D on the 28th with his harmonica player John Roundcity. Roundcity is the Johnny Woods to Dooley's Fred McDowell. Wilson is quite possibly the best blues slide guitarist north of the Mason-Dixon line. Obscure 1930s and 40s blues songs combine with originals for one of the coolest set lists around.

In February 2008, Kinetic Stereokids headed into Ghetto Recorders to mix Kid Moves with Detroit studio legend Jim Diamond (White Stripes, The Mooney Suzuki, The Dirtbombs). Final tweaks came from Jeff Lipton at Peerless Mastering (Arcade Fire, LCD Soundsystem, Wilco). The result is a more sophisticated effort than Basement Kids, while still retaining their distinctive grit. Later in 2008, Overdraft offered the first glimpse of Kid Moves by way of a limited edition 7" and the Have A Nice Day EP, also containing "Explosions Were Heard (Live on KEXP)" from an on-air session at Chicago's Engine Studios.

Overdraft has now released the official video for "Have A Nice Day", featuring intricate digital animation painstakingly created by New York-based editor Kelly Brickner. The video presents the band exploring a manipulated world of complex collages, most of which were scanned from scrapbook diaries created by Kinetic Stereokids' frontmen Justin Ford and Mike Steibel. These collages are vital relics of Kinetic Stereokids history and also serve as the basis for the Kid Moves album art.

The band is currently touring and will continue across the country throughout the summer. Further, a video for Kid Moves' second single, "Twisted Thoughts," is in production from Detroit-based filmmaking duo James Petix and Sarah Babila, creators of the highly anticipated Detroit garage rock documentary It Came From Detroit.

PHOTOS: The Readies ~ The Sugarcoats ~ Scarlet Oaks by Andrew Didorosi

Editor's Choice of Shot of the Night

"I went for a film look on the Readies shots, because they really brought
some vintage flavor and it only seemed right." - Andrew Didorosi/MCB

The Sugarcoats really turned it up a notch

"This past Friday, The Lager demonstrated exactly what it means to be a part of the Detroit rock scene. The night opened with The Scarlet Oaks, who after a slow opening, found their courage and blasted a few solid tracks.

Headlining after a 5-month hiatus, The Readies hit the stage with their own blend of vintage with a strong, established presence; very impressive considering they've been together for under a year total.

The true stars of the night were The Sugarcoats, who stole the show with just a couple stunning hooks and a furious beat.

A great night for local rock." -Andy Didorosi / MCB

FREE CD: Eagles of Death Metal ~ Heart On

motorcityfuckingblog at earthlink.fucking net
gone!!!!
DUI on EODM
this is a repost vintage MCB
.........and its always a good gauge of a new album to listen in the car and see how it hits me...There aren't many records out that I would be so anxious for arrival but it is EOMD and the third time around is always a charm.....

Had a few in me at home and was feeling good so I decided to take the Challenger out for a drive and give it a listen....some of the best times are the "Solo Flights" out on the road and I hit the freeway by time "Live in LA" was blaring // before I knew it we were doing well over 100 as I rolled down toward the Davison...

DIETROIT always seems like a blur of broken boards and burned blackness when "I'm a Torpedo" barreling down the FWY and listening to a great record lending itself as rose colored glasses...you feel hopeful that the hardship that plagues the city will recede / smiling faces / kids playing in the street...

Figures, your out getting "Cheap Thrills " and thats when the flashing lights come up in the rear view and I'm thinking "Now I'm a fool" for doing this and I knew things were gonna get interesting from that point on....

Was wearing my heart on my sleeve as I pulled up into the pack and eased over squeezing between a rusty ol' caddy and a dirty white van but the citizen on patrol was still behind me so I punched it past the rig on the right and braked hard pulling back and off the exit with the rear barely keeping pace racing down the ramp. Thinking fast and moving fast are one in the same so I jumped back on the freeway and could see my pursuer just ahead of me probably on the radio making waves to the street to keep on the lookout...
I just doubled back on the Lodge and was home free "Prissy Prancin'

The boys of EODM continue to play across the country

They will release their debut CD "Corn Money"

on City Salvage Records on March 3, 2009.

gone!!

Emerging from the thriving roots scene in New York City, this seven-piece band wields an arsenal of instruments (upright bass, banjo, fiddle, backhills harp, Telecaster, and junkyard percussion) with relentless energy and virtuosity.

“Thin Air” is a featured song from Corn Money

can be downloaded at

http://www.thedefibulators.com/downloads

While jumpstarting new life into vintage country and characterized by THE NEW YORKER as “Citi-billy,” The Defibulators deliver a unique sound that is both timeless and timely, deep fried and downtown. Bug Jennings and Erin Bru’s rich harmonies combined with dark, surreal lyrics illuminate songs that are gritty and witty; spinning big-rig tales of deception, debauchery, depleted bank accounts, fanaticism, vintage firearms, biological anomalies, airline intoxication and animal ennui.

Detroit locals SikSik Nation have a new song for download
catch them out on tour and on March 5th at Smalls for the Hamtramck Blowout

"Trio SikSik Nation radiate raucous rock with a heart, a reckless sort of groove that you can feel, like the sweat of the sound’s forehead spattering down upon you. Their anthems have grit and fire, but also feel very organic, grabbing you and shaking you out of your complacency. Though they assuredly get you swinging, their jaunts are ripe with socially conscious cannonballs as singer/guitarist Sean Morrow howls harrowingly over the earnest, garage-informed swingability of Rick Sawoscinski’s skins and the tense, but freewheeling punk-grooves of Eric Oppitz’ basslines." - Five Three Dial Tone

Formed less than a year ago,
The Asteroids Galaxy Tour is is moving at the speed of light.
The band, led by Lars Iversen and Mette Lindberg,
created quite a buzz when they came to New York City this past November,
heralded (and hosted) by Spin and GBH.TV as one
of the hottest new bands from across the pond
thanks to their attention-grabbing 4-track digital EP
(3 songs + a remix), Around the Bend.

RCRDLBL premiered an exclusive MP3.
TAGT's song "Around the Bend" was hand-picked by Steve Jobs
for use in the most recent iPod Touch commercial

Their debut full-length, Fruit (April 21) swerves left and right with one surprise after another.

Each song is a carefully crafted pop gem, guaranteed to get you moving.

TAGT will bring their 6-piece party back to the U.S. in March!

YOUNG LOVE - One Of Us - April 28, 2009
In 2007 Young Love made you dance raucously with the release of his highly anticipated and much buzzed about debut record, Too Young To Fight It. Now, Dan Keyes is still masterminding music that sets dance floors ablaze, but since the release of that debut there's been a shift, a subtle but assured transformation in Keyes that manifests itself in each carefully chosen chord and each deliberately delivered lyric of his thrilling sophomore album, One Of Us. Set to hit via Island Def Jam on April 28, One of Us is a record that is at once energetic and contemplative, moving audiences seamlessly from a dance floor packed with strangers to a room filled with friends.Dan Keyes spent his formative years making music.
A songwriter at heart he was penning tunes at 11 and his first band, indie pop outfit Recover was quickly snatched up by Fueled By Ramen.
In 2005 Recover went on hiatus and Keyes veered off on his own, hopping from coast to coast and finally settling in New York with just a few suitcases and some demos.
The new material was far from what he had created with Recover and so his new project, Young Love, was born.
An instant hit, Young Love, with the release of Too Young To Fight It, could often be found on the road playing sold out shows across North America, heavily buzzed about gigs at major festivals like SXSW and heading overseas to Europe to play for enthralled fans

More On Young Love:

Tortured Soul was born of the simple yet adventurous belief that modern dance music can be performed completely live. Their unique live performances have astounded audiences around the world, from top nightclubs such as Fabric (London) to 15,000+ crowds at the Montreal Jazz Festival, while their recorded oeuvre pushes the genre boundaries of soul, dance, and pop. From their now-classic early singles such as “I Might Do Something Wrong,” to their highly-lauded debut album Introducing (2006 Purpose/R2 Records), Tortured Soul’s style is both an echo of the past and a challenge to the future, combining elements of old soul and funk with a modern dancefloor sensibility.

Tortured Soul is proud to introduce their new album Did You Miss Me on the band’s own newly formed TSTC Records (released on Dome UK/Europe, Columbia Japan), a 13-song set that picks up right where Introducing left off. The title is both a tongue-in-cheek nod to the fans who have been waiting with baited breath for the band’s sophomore effort, as well as an allusion to the primary motif of the album -- travel and it’s various tribulations. Drummer/vocalist John-Christian Urich, bassist JKriv and keyboardist Ethan White have played close to 400 shows together worldwide in Tortured Soul’s 5-year touring history, so it’s no wonder they have transit on the brain.

The album’s opening track “Home To You” is an open-letter to a loved one left behind, filled with optimistic longing, set over a driving dance groove. But with the album’s title track - a hand-clapping retro 60’s romp - the travel theme takes on a slightly more sardonic edge, exploring the feelings of jealously that crop up between distanced lovers. This dark lyrical mood is explored further in the earthy and soulful “Time To Make Up Your Mind,” continued over the poppy disco bounce of “Another Lover, and punctuated with the 80’s-esque electro groove “At the Bottom,” all of which touch on themes of alienation in love, from varying perspectives.
But as much as Did You Miss Me delves into the melancholic and frustrated feelings of travel and distance, it also strikes an inspirational chord with the upbeat message of “Your Dream is My Dream.” On tracks like “In My Fantasy,” “See You More,” and “Special Lady” the album erupts with energy, giving the listener VIP access to the secret and intoxicating soiree that is consummate Tortured Soul.

Much the way the music seems to effortlessly navigate the line between the themes of travel and party, the striking album artwork depicts the the trio skidding across an airport tarmac, waiting in style for a train in Grand Central Station, or speeding along a nighttime highway -- ever dashing, ever on the move. And as it moves through infectious disco grooves, heartfelt raw soul, and various lyrical themes, Did You Miss Me coheres as the group’s most accessibly diverse effort to date, one that’s sure to send their inimitable sound rocketing around the world.
Tortured Soul will be touring the U.S. later this spring.

DAN BLACK
"ALONE"

"I LOVE LIFE" FREE DOWNLOAD
"ALONE" VIDEO"

Anyone who even glanced at the end of year polls for who to watch out
for in 2009 won’t have been able to miss Dan Black’s name.

Off the back of his incredible Notorious BIG cover "Hypntz" and the electro anti-love gem "Yours" – the Parisian-based-Englishman was hailed as one of the pop talents to watch out for in 2009 by critics across the board.Brilliant new single "Alone" looks set to live up to, and exceed, all that hype. A collision of Scritti Politti and Prince, the new single is a euphoric out-of-the-box hit – and highlights Black’s radical, chic and futuristic approach to songwriting. With a soaring cosmic electronic landscape - "Alone" - has an out-of-this-worldness that’s unique to Dan Black.

His highly anticipated forthcoming debut album will be released in May 2009 in the UK and is currently being recorded in an 18th Century cellar under Dan’s apartment in Paris, before it’s mixed by Tom Elmhirst (Hot Chip, Amy Winehouse, The Kills) in London.

Catch Dan and his band live on the road when they join
Boy Crisis and Master Shortie on the Wonky Pop tour this month and March.

If you haven’t yet heard Theresa Andersson
that’s about to change.
She is playing a show March 12th over
at The Crofoot Pike Room in Pontiac

Raised in Sweden but based in New Orleans for over a decade,
Theresa Andersson mines her sonic roots of both homes on
her gorgeous album Hummingbird, Go! (Basin Street Records),
an intriguing blend of breezy, 60s-era pop combined with soul, gospel and Motown
that features guest appearances by fellow Scandanavian Ane Brun
and legendary New Orleans producer and composer Allen Toussaint.

Released to critical acclaim this past September (see press quotes below),
Hummingbird, Go! has sparked interest among music programmers,
the media and other tastemakers around the country.
Even more impressive is her multi-instrumental one-woman live show,
which almost always end with standing ovations from the audience,
as was the case on her recent tour with Ane Brun and Tobias Froberg.

As you may or may not be aware, the Detroit experimental, electronic band: Genders are out of hibernation and re-emerging into the surrealist spotlight, February 24th, 2009 at P.J's Lager House. 8pm.
How to describe Genders is next to nearly impossible. Jeffrey Thomas and Evan Johnson are the masterminds behind the dreamlike, trip dub, abstracted music project.
They formed out of another band, Via Employee, in 2003, where Jeffrey started a solo noise project. Evan joined soon after and the birth of Genders was established in 2004.
In 2005 I was able to see Genders first hand play at The Magic Stick, following the release of their EP-It's In The Treats and was taken aback at how loosely comfortable they were playing.
Nothing was forced.
Nothing was premeditated.
They produced songs completely intuitive as if they were telepathically communicating with each other and the music was their natural form of dialogue. Everything was celestial and raw. Using various instruments, Genders produces astronomical beats and sounds mimicking, repeating and exploding with each other. "making more with less".
It was utterly brilliant. The music resembles a mix between the last fleeting moments before a sunrise and the eeriness of a David Lynch film. Even their incongruous stage performance was unique and fascinating. I won't be a spoiler though and describe it for you in hopes there will be a equally tantalizing performance this Tuesday.
So, dear readers, go see for yourselves what Genders might arose in you.Last week, I had an opportunity to invite Jeffrey and Evan over for lunch and talk about their upcoming show, highlighting the compilation release of "13 moons" by Genders.
Below are snippets of the conversation:

Jeffrey Thomas (Genders): "The broccoli with humus was good."

Anna Hergott (MCB): "Thanks. Gender's branched out of the band via employee, tell me a bit more how you two guys met."

Evan Johnson (Genders): "Jeffrey and I met when there seemed to be a bunch of bands not going anywhere and it proved to be easier and more productive with two people rather than a full band producing music"

Evan: "Genders is an openness to experimentation, loosely organized and improvised" "There might have been a beat preconstructed but layers of instruments would be intermingled with it adding to the spontaneous creativity of the sound" "making something out of nothing"

Anna: "To me, Genders is an entity all on it's own, it's hard to pigeon hole exactly what genre you guys originate from. People like to label things. They like familiarity and seem to shun from anything new and different."

Jeffrey: "our music is always evolving."

Anna: "You've been on a hiatus from the scene for about two years. Now Genders is back with the release of 13 moons and playing on the 24th of February at Lager House."

Jeffrey: "13 Moons, is the newest Genders release. It's a compilation of thirteen cds, each a bit over a hour long with released and unreleased music from the band." "It's caught-in-the-moment, not polished, sounds that we have recorded over the years mostly on a boom box, but some on to an 8 track"

It's basically music made by the band from 2003 till 2006 and as Jeffrey states on his record label homepage, Holographic Resonance, "I picked the best material (about 13 and half hours) from a collection
of tapes (about 24 hours). Take your time listening to it, no
worries……or, don't and go on a marathon."

Anna: "Holographic Resonance, is a new record label you started Jeffrey, what other bands have jumped on the bandwagon and collaborated with you?"

Jeffrey: ".......It's a diverse grassroots label I've begun with myself, Vincent Mazzola and Julian Spradlin..beginning with this 13 Moons release, then a single for sugar coats, co releasing gardens/tyvek split, and something for aran ruth"..... a genders video collage should be avaliable at the show, hopefully. It will have two video collages that I made a while back mixed together, one from being on tour with Adult."

Anna: "Looking forward to the much anticipated Genders show at P.J's on Tuesday, thanks for stopping in and giving me a glimpse into the talented world of Jeffrey and Evan"

Genders plays 2.24.09 @ P.J's Lager House
drs. 8pm $5.00.
Release of 13 moons will be for sale.
$30.00, and worth every penny.

PHOTOS: EODM (Eagles of Death Metal) Small's Bar Detroit / Hamtramck by MONEYPENNY

MCB's MoneyPenny was back with EODM on Monday night
(she is always is always in the bands guest list baby!)
"EODM show was fucking awesome!"
Less then 24 hours from being announced those boys were onstage playing for a packed house.
They must really love the Motor City because they came and rocked Detroit on their day off, with Jesse fighting a high fever. The crowd went insane, I don't think anyone fully believed they were going on until they actually hit the stage. Magic Shop opened with a great set and really matched the intensity level of the night.
No planning, no notice, no problem.
Only true professionals could pull a show so perfect out of their ass in that amount of time AND act like they love it.
We were promised that "Detroit Steam" will be featured on the next album, so wait for that.

I really felt lucky to be there!

WILD AT HEART

Wild Bill Ketelhut provides the "blog" to this anti-blog
He has a radio program on WXOU out of Oakland University

TICKET GIVEAWAY courtesy of WXOU 88.3 and the Magic Stick. The first person to email Wild Bill at doramu13@yahoo.com will win a pair of tickets to see Oregon based experimental folk rock band Blitzen Trapper on Feb 20th at the Magic Stick. Their new album ‘Furr’ is out now and their song “Wild Mountain Nation” (which I played on my show this morning) ranked #98 on Rolling Stone’s Top 100 songs of 2007. Folk singer Alela Diane will open.
Also, if you listen to Nick Rorick’s punk rock show this Tuesday between 4-5PM on WXOU 88.3FM (online at http://www.wxou.org/), you can win tickets to the Magic Stick on Feb 21st to see the psychobilly group Creepshow along with the Koffin Kats.
In the world of theatre, I highly recommend the new Meadowbrook Theatre production, “Kong’s Night Out” which is a farce of epic proportions. Producer Myron Siegel has had a string of bad luck producing viable Broadway successes and is hoping things will change with his new production, Foxy Felicia. Things are looking good until he learns that his audience is cancelling their tickets to see the new production across the street by his arch nemesis Carl Denham, who is back from a recent cruise with a new starlet, Ann Darrow. Not willing to let Denham ruin yet another production, Siegel, along with his henchman (Christo Savalas – yes related to Kojak) and his mother (played wickedly by Cindy Williams fresh off her Nunsense appearance) plan to find out what Denham’s new production is and try to ruin it. Eddie Mekka stars as a gullible financier who rekindles his spark from his days of playing Carmine opposite Cindy in ‘Laverne & Shirley’
which adds an even greater fun to the slapstick nature of the play. Also wonderful is Kady Zadora (yep, Pia’s kid) as Siegel’s niece who plays the airheaded ingénue who is looking for her big break in film so she can leave Buffalo. I also thought Katie Neighbors was hot as the lovely Ann Darrow who shows she can jump over a prop like nobody’s business (and she is related to good old Jim Nabors if you are keeping score). The play basically ends soon after King Kong in a special appearance takes Ann Darrow away and meets his death. I really hate to leave anyone out, so Christopher Howe, Teri Clark Linden, Wayne David Parker and Rusty Mewha all deserve their kudos too in what I consider the best Meadowbrook production since I have been covering their productions. Between the all-star cast and witty script, I can’t think of anything about the play that isn’t top notch unless they could’ve gotten a real 40 foot ape for the role of Kong. See
this play or I’ll send Kong to step on your car. For more information, go to http://www.mbtheatre.com/. You’ll be happy you did. Kong trivia - Executive Producer David Selznick left RKO midway through production of this film, but his last act of business at RKO - and probably his biggest contribution to the film - was to write a memo changing the name of the production from 'Kong' to 'King Kong.' The body count for the film is 40 deaths and the play has no deaths but over 100 laughs. My grade is an A+.
The film “Wendy & Lisa” opened this weekend at the Main Art Theatre and it is an exceptional film. Wendy (Michelle Williams) is a young woman on the road heading for Alaska in hopes of being able to find a job and starting a new life with her best friend Lucy, which is her dog. The car she is driving breaks down in Oregon and she is faced with increasingly dire financial situation. She has a run in with the police and when she gets that straightened out, she finds herself back at her car but Lucy is missing and she needs to find her. That is the movie in the nutshell. It is a simple yet moving piece as we watch Wendy deal with her life at that moment. Despite, or because, of that simplicity, the film grabs at a deeper meaning which draws us into her predicament and allows us to empathize with her in a way bigger budget films don’t always allow anymore. This is a film that might not sound great but it is definitely worth your time. My grade
is an A+.
About nine couples proposed on the set of the Enterprise bridge on Valentine’s Day at the Detroit Science Center’s new exhibit “Star Trek: The Exhibition”. Ride in a flight simulator, sit in Kirk’s chair and order photon torpedo’s to be fired, walk the halls of the Next Gen Enterprise and see Picard’s ready room, stand on the transporter pad or walk through the Guardian and pretend to go back in time in this wonderful exhibit. This is a great exhibit for fans of Star Trek though it does focus heavily on the first two series but does have costumes, props and model ships from all the series. Todd Slisher doesn’t know what they DSC will be doing for the new Star Trek movie release yet, but he confirmed they are planning to do something special for the event. The Star Trek franchise, like it or not, has had great cultural impact on our lives from Martin Luther King Jr’s talk with Nichell Nichols about the importance of seeing a person
of color on the Enterprise Bridge to the naming of the Space Shuttle. It is also believed, whether correctly or not, to have influenced the design of many current technologies, such as the Tablet PC, the PDA, mobile phones, and the MRI (based on Dr. McCoy's diagnostic table). It has also broken many taboos such as the first multiracial kiss on TV (Kirk and Uhura) to dealing with issues like homosexuality in a way that isn’t overly preachy. You can go to http://www.sciencedetroit.org/ for more information. Live Long And Prosper!
Over the weekend, I had the pleasure of meeting the Toronto based singer Lights at the iLounge in Pontiac so I hope you listened to the interview on my show last Saturday. Her career got its first boost as she was modeling for a Wal-Mart ad and while she hasn’t pursued modeling, she did end up getting an agent out of the deal for her music career. When you watcher perform, you can see a little bit of her musical inspiration Bjork come out. Like Bjork, she wants to explore everything that music can be and not be pigeonholed by anybody. She is also a big fan of comic books of which she has written one about her career and has a beautiful vintage Wonder Woman tattoo on her back. Heck, she even knows who Magnus Robot Fighter is, so I must be in love. She is also a fan of sci-fi films like Barbarella which you can see in her t-shirt designs. She has officially changed her name to Lights (a nickname based on her last name Poxleitner) and will be
touring extensively this year including a month on Warped Tour. She says warped tour is like a mini-boot camp for artists since there is little time to do set ups so it affects the way she would normally do her show but the benefits of being able to interact with fans makes up for that drawback. Check out her website at http://www.iamlights.com/.
If you want to see me out and about, I know for such that I will be at the Pike Room this Tuesday for Goblin Cock, a heavy metal band from San Diego started by Rob Crow of Pinback. Basically, they play a heavy sounding slow tempo metal revoking bands like Black Sabbath. I will also be at the Ben Kweller show at St Andrew’s on Thursday with the wonderfully talented Watson Twins and on Friday. I’ll be at the Michigan Theatre in Ann Arbor for Lyle Lovett and John Hiatt. Other good shows include 2/18 – Ben Folds @ Michigan Theatre or Brett Dennen @ The Blind Pig, 2/19 – Flogging Molly w/the reggae influenced Aggrolites @ the Fillmore, 2/20 – Celtic Women @ the Fox Theatre or pianist Jade Simmons @ the DIA, 2/21 – the jam band Bakerton Group @ the Shelter or The Von Bondies and Nico Vega @ The Blind Pig. So take advantage of this wonderful music week and go see a concert.
Have a good week and I look forward to seeing you all next week. Also, I almost forgot a happy 200th birthday to Charles Darwin. How come some people can’t envision a God with the ability to create a force like evolution but can believe in water into wine?

LOOK OUT MUSIC WORLD! HERE COMES TROUBLE!
PROFESSIONAL SNOWBOARDER & OLYMPIC ATHLETE
TROUBLE ANDREW TO RE-RELEASE DEBUT ALBUM

Trevor Andrew is already internationally recognized as one of the world’s top snowboarders with two Olympic Games and numerous World Cup wins under his belt. And, now, Trevor – a.k.a. Trouble Andrew – is about to conquer the world of music with his debut Trouble Andrew on Virgin Records, which was produced by John Hill/Shitake Monkey (Santogold, Lykke Li) and mixed by Mark Needham (The Killers).

Trouble Andrew is a remixed and remastered edition of his self-released 2007 CD of the same name (previously available only via iTunes) with underground hit “Chase Money” and the addition of one newly recorded song, “What’s So Strange About Me.” Like most rock stars, Trouble was a rebel and dropped out of high school at age 15 to live his dream -- literally a pipe dream for a kid coming from the relatively flat Nova Scotia. He is no stranger to the rock star life of winning contests, signing endorsement deals (Burton Snowboards and Oakley to name a few), and gaining rabid fans around the world. He has inspired a generation of snowboard kids with his original freestyle riding and unique signature snowboards and outerwear that have always represented the skateboarding, punk rock, hip-hop, and pop influences of his youth. Trouble’s music tells a similar story with its dark, hard hitting grinding bass and synths and sk8rock guitar riffs and witty and sexually charged lyrics.
"Chase Money" Video

One such track is the playful, fast-paced, boasting track that makes the listener feel good to be bad “Bang Bang” featuring Trouble’s fiancé Santi White, better known as Santogold. “She encouraged me to do music,” says Trouble, who began his professional snowboarding career at age 15, but didn’t write his first song until he broke his knee in 2005. “I was recovering from a snowboarding injury and she bought me a 4-track recorder, a Gibson guitar, and a Peavey amp to play around on because she saw me taking an interest.”

After nine months of rehab and a full recovery, the professional snowboarder-turned-musician had Trouble Andrew recorded, a four-piece band, and a whole new sound behind him. That new sound is an amalgamation of the punk, rock, hip-hop, sk8, surf, and snowboard cultures he grew up on. The end result is a poppy electro sk8 punk music with fist pumping anthems, rump-shaking melodies, and sing-along hooks. “It’s like crunkrock pop,” says Trouble.

Coincidence has been kind to Joseph King. What started as a seed planted in his native Austin, Texas, has transformed under New York City's bright lights, and all the possibility they represent, into something truly impressive. Through a series of chance encounters in the basement clubs of the Lower East Side and the West Village, an assembly of musicians have banded together with King to form Deadbeat Darling.
The quartet's forthcoming debut, May's Weight of Wandering, brims with spindly, anxious rock powdered by the sort of romance and melodrama best delivered in a cavernous arena. And with a string of sold out shows across Manhattan and Brooklyn, and a run of big-ticket Bowery Ballroom gigs closing out 2008, King and company don't seem that far off.
The first single from Wandering, "Without A Trace", is due soon, and will be celebrated with a release party at Mercury Lounge in New York this Friday.

ChildrenHard Times Hanging At The End Of The World
New York City’s Children are about to deliver an
electric shock to the world of contemporary metal.
Their debut, Hard Times Hanging At The End Of The World, ripples with speed, precision, and a visceral intensity that is seldom seen in any genre of music these days. The trio, guitarists Skyler Spohn, Jonny Ollsin (formerly of Vancouver’s S.T.R.E.E.T.S.), and drummer Adam Bennati (of Early Man) put out their first release in early 2008, the 12” single for “Death Tribe.” However, it’s Hard Times that showcases the band in its fully realized form. The band has crafted a set of meticulous compositions, including several marathon-length tracks that stretch past the seven minute mark. Even when Ollsin isn’t wielding his throaty growl like a weapon, the band’s instrumental passages are so lyrical that they paint vivid pictures themselves.Album opener “Advance Mind Control” begins with the drone of a lone, ominous, outer-space synth before the full band simultaneously launches into attack mode.
Spohn and Ollsin’s guitars kicks off their dynamic, album-long duel while Bennati catapults into a propulsive groove. The band steadily charges forward without looking back. Eventually, the track slows down in its final two minutes to morph into an epic ending, anchored by Bennati’s stomping caveman beats. The energy then immediately shoots back to a fever pitch with the breakneck fury of second track “Nuclear Bummer.” It isn’t until “H.T.H.A.T.E.O.T.W.” that you truly get a chance to catch your breath. The song’s Spanish flavored acoustic guitars concoct the album’s most calm and mystical moments.
But by the time the cacophonous final moments of album closer “Time is the Living” arrive, Children will have inspired chin-stroking admiration while melting all the faces in the room.
Alice’s lavishly soulful voice is both timeless and up to the minute modern.
Live or on record, she always performs with her trademark self assurance and sass.
Listening to Alice, you’d naturally think she grew up on the streets of Detroit, just around the corner from Motown’s legendary recording studios, but surprisingly enough the blue-eyed, blonde-haired lass hails from Brighton, U.K. Today Alice has developed a burgeoning career as one of the hottest UK soul singers with growing audiences around the world.
She has performed alongside well respected company that includes Roy Ayres, The Roots, Lonnie Liston Smith, De La Soul, Quantic, and The Quantic Soul Orchestra to name a few.

The Big Read Detroit 2009

ARAB AMERICAN MUSEUM LEADS METRO DETROIT
IN NEA’S ‘THE BIG READ’ PROGRAM
DURING MARCH 2009

Free books, programs encourage reading of literary classics

Books, materials available in both English and Arabic

What happens when a metropolitan area starts a temporary book club?
Someone in Sterling Heights considers picking up a book for the first time in years.
An Allen Park reader puts down the romance novel and gives the classics a try.
Kids in Dearborn abandon their computer games for a moment to
learn something new about their heritage.
And in some intangible but worthwhile fashion, the entire community is elevated.

Some 208 communities across the United States are encouraging literary reading through the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) program
The Big Read from September 2008 through June 2009.

During the month of March 2009 in metro Detroit, the Arab American National Museum (AANM) is leading the charge, offering hundreds of free copies, in both English and Arabic, of the 1961 novel The Thief and the Dogs by Egyptian Nobel laureate Naguib Mahfouz, thanks to a $10,000 NEA grant and a $10,150 grant from Detroit Area Library Network (DALNET).

Some 17 free related public events – book discussions, films, lectures, even backgammon lessons – will take place around metro Detroit. Venues include the AANM, public library branches, universities and bookstores. Some events will be conducted in both English and Arabic. Among the featured speakers are Wayne State University’s Dr. May Seikaly and from the University of Michigan, Dr. Waheed Samy and the man who translated The Thief and the Dogs from Arabic into English, Dr. Trevor Legassick. A complete schedule of events appears below and at www.arabamericanmuseum.org.

In addition to the public events and participating locations listed below, book clubs and other area organizations are invited to take part in The Big Read during the month of March. Free books and materials are immediately available by calling Arleen Wood, managing librarian, at the AANM at 313.624.0224.

Individuals will find free copies of the book, as well as circulating copies, reading guides, event schedules and related materials at the following locations during their regular business hours:

Arab American National Museum
Library & Resource Center
13624 Michigan Ave., Dearborn
313.624.0223
(book/related materials available in both English and Arabic at this location only)

4901 Evergreen Road, Dearborn
313.593.5598

Sterling Heights Public Library

Free books and materials will also be available at all Big Read events listed below. Questions about The Big Read and any related program may be directed to the AANM’s Library & Resource Center at 313.624.0223.

In addition to support from the NEA and DALNET, the AANM is pleased to recognize the following partner organizations providing programming for The Big Read:

Dearborn Public Library; Wayne State University Library System; University of Michigan – Dearborn Mardigian Library; Sterling Heights Public Library; Metro North Backgammon Club; Plymouth Backgammon Club; Barnes & Noble Booksellers.

About The Thief and the Dogs

Out of a Cairo prison for less than a day, thief Said Mahran quickly resumes his old ways, and worse. Angered by his young daughter's refusal to even shake hands with the parent she has not seen in four years, and by the chilly reception from Rauf Ilwan, a former colleague in crime whom he suspects of having betrayed him to the police, Mahran goes berserk and seeks revenge with a gun. But this onetime Robin Hood (an ardent nationalist, he stole only from "people who deserved to be robbed") accidentally murders two innocents instead of his intended victims, the new husband of his ex-wife and Ilwan. Pursued by the press and the police, he finds refuge with a prostitute he knows; her flat has a view of a cemetery. The Nobel laureate writes here with remarkable clarity and eloquence. His tale of the haunted, hunted Mahran is feverish and suspenseful, introspective and subtle. In just 176 pages, he offers a complex psychological portrait of a man hell-bent on ruining himself. – Publishers Weekly (copyright 1989 Reed Business Information, Inc.)

About Naguib Mahfouz
Naguib Mahfouz (1911-2006) is the best-known and most widely respected 20th century writer in Egypt, if not the entire Arab World. His novels, set in 20th century Egypt, delve into cultural and political issues such as the position of women in Egyptian society and the treatment of political prisoners. In 1988, he became the first Arab writer to win the Nobel Prize in Literature. Read a complete biography HERE; Mahfouz’s Nobel lecture HERE; and further information HERE.
About The Big Read

The Big Read is an initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts, designed to restore reading to the center of American culture. The NEA presents The Big Read in partnership with the Institute of Museum and Library Services and in cooperation with Arts Midwest. The Big Read brings together partners across the country to encourage reading for pleasure and enlightenment.

The Big Read answers a big need. Reading at Risk: A Survey of Literary Reading in America, a 2004 report by the National Endowment for the Arts, found that not only is literary reading in America declining rapidly among all groups, but that the rate of decline has accelerated, especially among the young. The concerned citizen in search of good news about American literary culture would study the pages of this report in vain.

The Big Read aims to address this crisis squarely and effectively. It provides citizens with the opportunity to read and discuss a single book within their communities. The initiative includes innovative reading programs in selected cities and towns, comprehensive resources for discussing classic literature, an ambitious national publicity campaign, and an extensive Web site providing comprehensive information on authors and their works.

Each community event lasts approximately one month and includes a kick-off event to launch the program locally, ideally attended by the mayor and other local luminaries; major events devoted specifically to the book (panel discussions, author reading, and the like); events using the book as a point of departure (film screenings, theatrical readings, and so forth); and book discussions in diverse locations and aimed at a wide range of audiences.

The NEA inaugurated The Big Read as a pilot project in 2006 with 10 communities featuring four books. The Big Read continues to expand to include more communities and additional books. By 2009, approximately 400 communities in the U.S. will have hosted a Big Read since the program's 2007 national launch.
