The Wedding Present are one of the bands that originated
with the “Indie Pop” tag that is thrown around so loosely today at bands that
aren’t much of either. Their first album “George Best” came out way back in
1987 and they became known for their fast-paced guitar paired with lead
singer David Gedge’s slightly flat yet infectious vocals. Over the
years although they have only released 8 albums, each of them are
memorable, high quality records, my favorite being Steve Albini’s bombastically
produced Seamonters. As one of my favorite lyrists, Gedge is the best
writer of relationship issues around. If you have ever been in a relationship
where there’s a third or even fourth person involved, Gedge has a lyric you can
take to heart.
The Wedding Present are currently working on their next
album and playing around the US. We’re fortunate enough to have them back at
the Pike Room where they also played in 2008 with a backdrop of snow and a
Presidential election. Having seen them a few times, I can tell you their
performances are great intimate shows that feature blazing guitars, Gedge
singing and brilliant takes on all their popular songs. You can see the Wedding
Present along with the Jet Age and Pinky Piglets at the Pike Room on Monday,
March 26.
