PHOTOS: Pre-Hash-Bash Blondies Detroit by Drew Bender

"On Thursday night, 5 bands converged on Blondies on west Fort Street,
a little over a mile from downtown Detroit. I feel compelled to say
upfront that despite being billed as the ‘Pre Hash Bash Bash’ that at
no time did I detect any illegal substances burning nearby.
Seriously. I think most people really respected the venue, didn’t
want to get kicked out, and/or were already wasted when they arrived.
Even though both shows were packed with dreadlocked hippies of all
ages, I was there as MCB’s H.O.T.S. (hippie on the scene).

The Cobain-Nirvanaesque guitar-drum duo Aneurysm, got the few people
there started off for the evening, who were followed by up and coming
Detroit-based jam band Lake Effect, whose jams were definitely
reminiscent of other bands on the scene, and their cover of one of
String Cheese Incident’s more popular songs certainly fit with the
vibe - and I’ll be looking forward to seeing them perform again soon.
Next up were my good friends Flophouse, a great band on the Detroit
scene that brings a big punch of funk to the dance floor and is always
good to keep the party going strong and they had the kids shakin’
their dreads and jumpin around. Following Flophouse was a band Cowboy
Messiah that interspersed punk and reggae, rock, and jam reminiscent
of a Midwestern Sublime for such fusion. Finally, the headliner
Ekoostik Hookah took the stage for a long set of great jams. The night
was a great Pre Hash Bash Bash - and I never smelled it in there! "
