Their music draws upon groups such as The Beatles, Wilco and Stars and singer/songwriters along the lines of Cat Stevens and Nick Drake. Although the instrumentation of Light in August is guitar, bass, keys, vocals, drums and flute, they are also known to use the sitar, tanpura and Spanish classical guitar in their music. For the past year, they have been playing at venues like The Crofoot, The Elbow Room and The Blind Pig and have recently completed their first release entitled 'Places' (recorded at Rustbelt Studios).
Their live show is energy-packed and unpredictable. Alex Wand, who also plays the sitar and the classical guitar, often incorporate these non-western instruments into Light in August sets. The group is also known for encouraging audience participation in their performance. For example, one time they performed an improvisation based on a color and a shape of the audience’s choosing (it turned out to be a purple rhombus).
