UPCOMING EVENT: One Night in Cuba - Detroit Yacht Club - Fri Sept 26th 2009

Performances by Lola Morales
Appearance by Maria Lankina of Bravo’s Miami Social
Bringing together the pulse of Cuba and the rhythms of South Beach, the historic Detroit Yacht Club will be transformed into a setting for Detroit’s finest as Dolce Moda of Royal Oak, Melinda MeMe, and DJ Jenny LaFemme, present, “One Night in Cuba,” on Friday, September 25, 2009 from 8:00 pm to 1:00 am. A portion of the proceeds from ticket sales will benefit the Center of Music & Performing Arts Southwest (COMPAS)

“When guests arrive they will be transported to an era that evokes 1920s Cuban glamour mixed with the sophistication of South Beach,” said Melinda Anderson, the producer of the event and owner of MeMe Designs + Events. “We are transforming the ballroom of the yacht club into a Miami-like setting complete with private cabanas and lounges.”

Anderson said the yacht club’s veranda will be the spot for guests to not only check out the spectacular views of the Detroit skyline, but also enjoy hand-rolled Cuban cigars by La Casa de la Habana and mojitos while being serenaded by the Sean Blackman and Lola Morales.

Morales is a native of San Francisco that has been traveling the globe with her band performing her distinctive style of music; a combination of rich, melodic vocals over raw-edged beats and driving rhythms.

The music won’t stop there though; fresh from Italy, DJ Jenny Lafemme will be mixing things up with her signature soulful house, old-school, and international pop blend while accompanied by the Medicine Man (Bruce Cobb) on percussions.

Presenting an exclusive preview of the latest fashion for the fall season, including models styled by Luigi Bruni. The Royal Oak based fashion designer Dolce Moda will be bringing the hottest fashion trends from around the world to the run way at “One Night in Cuba”

In addition to great music and fashion, “One Night in Cuba” will also have star power. Maria Lankina, the star of Bravo’s hit docu-series Miami Social will make a special guest appearance. She is the blonde bombshell on the television series that documents what life is like in the lively social scene of South Beach.

While “One Night in Cuba” will be a great party, it also has a great cause. A portion of the proceeds from the evening will benefit the Center of Music & Performing Arts Southwest. Located in Odd Fellows Hall at 8701 W. Vernor, COMPAS provides the community with access to the arts by providing a variety of classes including Flamenco, Mexican Folklore, ballet, traditional Afro-Cuban, bilingual theatre, and violin.

“We are pleased to be the charity of choice for “One Night in Cuba,” said Ismael Duran, Executive Director of COMPAS. “Our organization is committed to educating our community through the arts by offering the best quality classes we can provide; and the funds from this event will go a long way to help continue our mission.”

Detroit Yacht Club Membership Director Jack Lyon thinks “One Night in Cuba” will be a huge success because it will benefit a very worthy cause and help a new demographic to become familiar with the historic yacht club on Belle Isle.

“We were excited when Melinda and the folks from Dolce Mode approached us about hosting this event and agreed almost immediately that it was something we wanted to do,” he, said. “The yacht club is one of this city’s hidden gems and having ‘One Night in Cuba’ will help introduce our beautiful facility to a new generation of professionals from across our region. It is going to be a fantastic event for everyone.”
