-jr-MusicRevue 2/03/10

This week I will be going through the 3 new releases straight from
Cass Records is a Detroit Based Record Label.
They put out vinyls for both local and national acts.
3 new releases have come out recently
and I had the luxury of having them forwarded to me for reviewal.

Turbo Fruits: MAMA-047 Turbo Fruits "Colt .45" b/w "Broadzilla"(demo)
-Colt .45 opens with straight ahead speed-surf riff and segues into a 60s road vibe. I particularly liked the used of a distorted fuzzy guitar for the solos and break instrumental work. All in all its a quick, standard rock song.

-Broadzilla (Demo) should have been the single title rather than the b/w. This is a completely different style of song. It has very short sung verses and heavy instrumentation. I liked the composition of this song far more than Colt .45

-All in all, I would say this is a good 45 because it has 2 completely different expositions of the band's songwriting abailities but they are tied together by a common sound. If I had to clarify who this band "sounded like," I would label them as The Black Lips but with a far better singer.

The Readies: MAMA-046 the Readies "Mink Dagger" b/w "Medicine Cabinet"

-Mink Dagger opens proving that this is a blues based Detroit Rock N Roll Band. It has an Iggy Pop feel in terms of the lyrics and vocal presentation. The song follows the formualic rock song skeleton. The guitar solo felt a bit off the cuff. Overall, it was a throwback to the genre of Detroit garage.

-Medecine Cabinet is a quite faster and off to the point than Mink Dagger. I really dug the drum break before the guitar solo. Kroha's guitar work in this song imbibes James Williamson on Raw Power. Medecine Cabinet felt like a fast paced motorcycle song.

-The Readies seem to be heavily influenced by The Stooges, particularly Raw Power era, and MC5. There is nothing particularly original with this 45; but you view it as a throwback record, it's passable.

The Dirtbombs: MAMA-048 the Dirtbombs "Race to the Bottom" full version

-Race To The Bottom is an extended take of a song that originally debuted on The Dirtbombs' 2008 album We Have You Surrounded. This song is a 23 minute drone of synth work. The sound was felt like a re-hash of Lou Reed's Metal Machine Music. I will say it took some sack to release this. The Dirtbombs are a band reknowned for their scuzzy garage rock. A band whose oufit includes 2 bassists, 2 drummers, and 1 guitarist/singer; so a vinyl release of 23 minutes of synth work is a good experimental departure. I love it when bands do something that is so completely different and sideways from what you come to expect. It's not the greatest 23 minutes you will spend, but it is a really cool idea and stretch for a band that has stayed true to a specific sound since 1992.
