On March 5, some of Detroit’s finest musicians and entertainers join forces to expand awareness about muscular dystrophy and raise money for seven-year-old Joseph Penrod, a local boy who was diagnosed with a form of the disease two years ago.

Many people only think of muscular dystrophy on Labor Day weekend when MDA National Chairman Jerry Lewis hosts the Muscular Dystrophy Association telethon. But for people who have the disease, and their families, it’s a battle fought every day. “It will take a whole lot of people to help us put an end to it,” says Marissa Penrod, co-producer of the event and Joseph’s mother.
“Almost two years ago, Joseph was diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. As one can imagine, it was devastating news to hear that our child had an incurable, congenital disease. I decided that though we may not get to choose what we’re handed, we can choose how we handle it. Since his diagnosis, it’s been my mission to fund research through the MDA as well as to raise awareness of the disease and help fund Joseph’s current and future treatment and care,” Penrod says.
The event will also showcase artistic creations from area high school students,
responding to the theme of “hope.”
Former Geffen Records recording artist Hush is co-producer of the event. “Marissa and I met at a charity event. She shared her emotional story and her vision of bringing people together for the cause by producing a concert. As a parent myself, I understood her passion and I wanted to lend my skills to help bring more attention to muscular dystrophy and do my part to find a cure for Joseph and so many other kids like him,” he says.
Muscular dystrophy refers to a group of hereditary genetic and neuromuscular diseases that are characterized by progressive muscle weakness. There are more than 43 major types of MD affecting 250,000 Americans. Duchenne MD is the most common childhood form of the disease. Linked to the X chromosome, Duchenne MD patients have gene mutations that prevent the body from producing a normal supply of dystrophin – a protein that helps voluntary skeletal muscles and the heart muscle to function normally.
