I’ve been a fan of Hyper Crush since their early days on
their self- released album. “The Arcade.”
If you’re new to Hyper Crush, “Night Wave” might just hit you like a generic
dance party album comparable to LMFAO or Far East Movement. Which is
understandable, as “Night Wave “ is a slick collection of party anthems with
vocalist Donnie slinging raps on how he’d like to get with a girl, Holly
providing vocals that she’s ready to reciprocate and Preston rolling the dance
beats that make it all happen on the dance floor. Having heard the full releases
by LMFAO and the like, Hyper Crush’s “Night Wave” has more variety, better
beats and is a consistently better record.
My only complaint is
having known Hyper Crush from their past, I miss their video game references
and retro 80’s play. This version of Hyper Crush is much glossier and certainly
built for radio and the dancefloor but lacks some of the depth and uniqueness
that made them a stand out for me. It’s like the Hyper Crush before was the
awkward girl with braces that didn’t know how cute she was and now a few years
later she’s all grown up, lost the braces and is strutting her stuff. Hyper Crush
still does what they do well enough to keep me tagging along but if they get
too caught up in their “hot for the top” status they just may lose the Teflon
grip they’d had on me.
