The Ray Vega Quintet at Jazz Café - Fri/Sat March 27/28th 8pm & 10pm

The Ray Vega Quintet at Jazz Café
Detroit Jazz Café proudly presents the innovative Trumpeter, percussionist and educator, Ray Vega and his Quintet in the New Yorker’s first ever Detroit performances, with 4 shows, Friday March 27th and Saturday, March 28th at 8:00 and 10:00 PM each night.
As an innovator of the New York Latin Jazz movement, Vega imbues his jazz with many spicy sound styles. Salsa and Afro-Caribbean rhythms permeate an almost, “World Music” sensibility without ever straying too far from straight ahead Jazz.
Born in the South Bronx, Ray Vega is a veteran of the bands of Tito Puente, Ray Barretto, Mongo Santamaria, Mario Bauza, Luis "Perico" Ortiz, Hector LaVoe, Johnny Pacheco, Larry Harlow, Pete "El Conde" Rodriguez and Louie Ramirez to name a few.
Ray has performed and/or recorded with Joe Henderson, Lionel Hampton, Mel Torme, Paquito D’Rivera, Arturo Sandoval, The Chico O’Farrill Afro-Cuban Jazz Orchestra, The Lincoln Center Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra, Paul Simon, Yomo Toro, Eddie Palmieri, and The Duke Ellington Orchestra among numerous others.
Ray currently works with the renowned contemporary Classical composer Osvaldo Golijov, performing first and solo trumpet in the critically acclaimed work; "La Pasion Segun San Marco".Vega’s 2004 album, “Squeeze, Squeeze”, garnered a 4 star review in Downbeat Magazine.
For his Jazz Café engagement, The Ray Vega Quintet is comprised of Vega on trumpet, Richie Morales on drums, Wilson “Chembo” Corniel on Latin percussion, Zaccai Curtis, piano and on bass, Andy Eulau.
Ray is currently the Director of Jazz Studies at the University of Vermont.
