Saturday April 4th saw the return of the annual Hash Bash celebration
to Ann Arbor, and an evening of music to the Blind Pig.
to Ann Arbor, and an evening of music to the Blind Pig.
I happened to miss the first two bands of the night, although I did get a chance to hear Dante LaSalle, a veteran hiphop artist acting as MC and emcee for the evening, making jokes, dropping rhymes, and keeping the crowd entertained.
Having been on the Van’s Warped Tour, Dante’s a name that I’m sure I’ll be seeing again soon. As with the previous night, the dreadlocked hippies and other kind folks were adhering to the
Pig’s strict non-smoking policy for the night – and nary a puff of any kind of smoke was seen nor smelled.

The woman and I arrived just in time to see Kalamazoo’s own Greensky Bluegrass, winner of the 2006 Telluride Bluegrass Festival Band Competition, take the stage. As much a jamband as a bluegrass act, Greensky blends sweet vocal harmonies, strong improvisation, great song writing, and a commanding yet approachable stage presence that continues to win fans.
Featuring acoustic guitar, banjo, standup bass, mandolin, and dobro (a resonant
guitar played with a slide), the boys from K-zoo are heading out west for a spring tour. Replete with cover’s of Bob Marley’s ‘Stop that Train’ and Prince’s ‘When Doves Cry’ they’re an act I always look forward to. After Bluegrass was the time for some jazz-rock- jamtasticness with Ann Arbor’s own Macpodz. At home on their home turf, with their friends and family there, the boys mix up quite a party with keys, drums, percussion, trumpet, and electric bass, the

Evidence of the good time going on that night was to be found in the fact that try as I might, a clear shot up front was not to be gotten,, at least not with getting a mouthful of dreads.
Slated for some big festivals this summer including Rothbury and 10,000 Lakes in
Minnesota, the Macpodz’ party was one hell of a Bash.
