FREE CD: the latest from GOMEZ out today ~ "A New Tide"

If you have been living under rock for the past 10 years then you may not have heard of GOMEZ....just to toss in a blog moment to this anti-blog this is a band that I have been jamming to for 10 years now. I can think of at least 5 insanity moments where the music of GOMEZ was part of the scene for me - the most memorable being near death and destruction w/ fast cars and fast women on bridges (chicken races ending up off the bridge - crazy) and one of the best damn kickball games ever played.

....never heard of gomez?

On Little Known Frequencies
(March 10th; Dim Mak Records)

Post-rock trio From Monument to Masses are about to hit the road
with Dredg and Torche.
On their new album On Little Known Frequencies, produced by Matt Bayles (Mastodon, Isis, Minus The Bear), the band infuse their sound by with eclectic elements such as hip hop break beats, film score strings, and glitchy electronics.

In lieu of singing, FMTM use samples of politically-charged dialogue to convey a message without overtly preaching.

The politically charged rockers find inspiration in everything from glitchy electronic beats to the bristling energy of hardcore punk to hip hop break beats. They weave these eclectic influences into a danceable brand of post-rock that takes the genre and charges with it into the future

FREE CD: Littl'ans "Primitive World"

3rd emailer who asks
gets a fresh off the press copy
of the latest from
When you’re Littl’ans,
you’re on a different level of poised edginess.
In the few chaotic years as a band, Littl’ans – an Indie Brit Rock ensemble from London - have been arrested alongside music collaborator Pete Doherty, suffered exploding gas canisters and a double booking cancellation with Echo and the Bunnymen, and played at Dior fashion designer Hedi Slimane’s birthday party where they blew out the candles with Mick Jagger.
The high jinks paid off.
Littl’ans have since toured twice with BabyShambles, composed the original soundtrack for Dior Homme’s Summer 2007 fashion show, and recently signed to Brooklyn label Revtone Records. Primitive World is a classic album that exhibits the dark yet strangely up-lifting melancholy that encapsulates the band’s busy adventure in the dapper world of indie music.
After trampling through a SXSW gig that earned Littl’ans a major SPIN.com handclap as one of the next big bands to watch out for, the band returns to Italy before finally coming to NYC for an April run at The Big Apple.
NYC concert dates:
4/17 – Brooklyn, NY @ Cameo at 8pm
4/23 – New York, NY @ Collective Hardware at 8pm w/ Inward Eye and Reckless Sons
4/24 – Brooklyn, NY @ Cameo at 8pm w/ Inward Eye

The Odd Worlds of Gwen Joy and Jason Smith
Art Opening at Majestic Cafe Detroit
Thursday April 2nd 2009
7pm-12MN

Gwen describes the show this way:
"My work consists of women with moxy, animals, and made up creatures often fashioned after my toys, these are called joytoys which are usually half human half animal.
My work is primitive brut in style. The colors are often very bright. In this show I am paired with Jason Smith whose work is very trippy also.
I think it's a marvelous pairing."

Wild At Heart - Monday March 30 2009

Bill Ketelhut provides the "blog" to this anti-blog
He has a radio program on WXOU out of Oakland University

This coming Saturday April 4th @ 8:30am MCB's Kirk and Amy will be guests on "Wild at Heart" talking to Wild Bill about the anti-blog and a bunch of the events going on around town that MCB is helping to promote....also we will spinning a few new local records from Friends of Dennis Wilson and I,Crime so tune and check it out!

Wild At Heart

Win tickets for: Glasvegas who will be at the Magic Stick on Saturday, April 4th.

They are a Scottish alternative rock band whose self-titled debut album has given them a couple of top 20 UK hits with “Geraldine” and “Daddy’s Gone”. Q magazine ranked their album 5th best of 2008. Great band you should check out!

The first person to email me at doramu13@yahoo.com will win the tickets to Glasvegas!

Good luck!

Having been to a few shows where the opening acts have dropped out (Watson Twins for Ben Kweller, Nico Vega for Von Bondies, Alphabeat for Katy Perry) which I find a current trend possibly linked to the cost of touring in today’s climate, I was thinking here we go again when both Poison Arrow and the Cute Lepers failed to show for the Queers show last night. However, Joe (of the Queers) confided that a member of the Cute Lepers died of an OD when given drugs by one of the Poison Arrows. Apparently, the band member took too much (I was told that while a big drinker, he rarely did drugs) and passed away after their Cincinnati show. I had been hearing good things about the band whose future might now be up in the air. Our hearts go out to Travis Criscola who was said to be a really great guy and a talented guitarist.

For movie fans this week, I have a wonderful 3-D animated film, “Monsters Vs Aliens” which starts with lovely Susan getting hit by a meteorite on her wedding day and growing super-sized a la 50ft Womanish. The army captures her and takes her to a secret base and labels her a monster where she meets her fellow mates, BOB (a gelatinous mass), Dr Cockroach (think the Fly), Missing Link (similar to the Creature From The Black Lagoon) and Insectosaurus (a giant grub). Soon after, the Earth is attacked by the evil Gallaxhar who wants to take over the world and it is up to our monsters to save the world and get their freedom. While not quite as good as recent Pixar films, this is still very entertaining with some nice in-jokes for the sci-fi nerds and definitely is one of the few good DreamWorks animated films. This is a good film for the kids which adults should like also and the 3-D effects are pretty subtle after you get past the flashy opening.
My grade is a B-.

A new opera is in town with the production of Donizetti’s “The Elixir Of Love”. This version is updated from the small village to an American town circa 1950’s which brings me to think of the current Rockwell exhibit at the DIA. Nemorino is the local ice cream guy who loves the beautiful Adina though she hates him and is set to marry the local army sergeant. Desperate for any hope of gaining her love comes when a travelling sideshow man Dr Dulcamara selling miracle cures. Thinking to make a buck, the Dr sells Nemorino a bottle of wine which he tells them is a love potion and tells him to wait 24 hours for it to work (so the DR can be long gone). However, the drunken courage helps Nemorino not gush over Adina which peaks her interest. This leaves the following questions such as will Adina break off her marriage with the sergeant and marry Nemorino instead. Go down Apr 4th and find out. Go to www.motopera.com for more info. My grade is an A.

Tune into my show on Saturday when I will have Kirk/Amy on the show promoting some new bands and a live performance by Bayje between 8-10AM this Saturday.

You can listen to this soulful singer on www.wxou.org so make sure to check her out. You can also run into a few of the MCB folks who are exhibiting at the event and I at the movie industry networking event at the Crofoot starting at noon and running until 6PM. With new movie companies coming into Pontiac and downtown Detroit, this is the place to get a feel for what is happening whether an aspiring actor or someone looking to invest in a project. For more info, go to http://www.michiganmovienetwork.com or call Lew Smith at (586) 615-3504 or e-mail to lew@vanirent.com . Hope to see you there!

I am going to quickly rant about the uproar about Bill Ayers talk at OU last Tuesday, which unfortunately I missed. For those who don’t know, Bill Ayers was a member of the Weather Underground in the 1960’s which used some questionable tactics in their protest of the Vietnam War such as blowing up a statue with a bomb. Some people today can only think of him as a terrorist and I think that is short-sighted, esp when you look at the times. For example, why doesn’t anyone say the KK were terrorists when they were hanging young American black men for no reason except to inspire terror? Unlike most KKK members, Ayers has apologized for what he did and admits in hindsight they could have done things different. In the “Real Bill Ayers”, he states simply “The Weather Underground went on to take responsibility for placing several small bombs in empty offices.... We did carry out symbolic acts of extreme vandalism directed at monuments to war and racism, and the attacks on property, never on people, were meant to respect human life and convey outrage and determination to end the Vietnam War.”. His current work has seen him praised as a teacher and getting a Citizen of the Year award in Chicago in 1997 for a public school reform issue. It amazes me that there is backlash against the guy today where people will stop contributing to OU because of his lecture. Universities are about diversity and we all can’t like everybody. To me, not having the guts to book someone like Ayers is a sign of cowardice. If you don’t like Bill, then don’t go to his lecture but don’t stop contributing to a university you love because of this. What about the good things OU has done or doesn’t that mean anything? I am starting to get upset here so let’s talk music.

Here is a look at some upcoming shows of interest. Tues, Mar 31st has Morrissey returning to the Michigan Theatre (did you know he got his start in a punk rock group called the Nosebleeds). Wed, Apr 1st will have rockers Gaslight Anthem paying at St Andrews with the Cincinnati-based country garage rock of the Heartless Bastards. The South American band Bajofondo will be at the Majestic on Thurs, Apr 2nd (look for an interview on my show on Apr 4th between 8-10AM on www.wxou.org ). The Scottish alternative rock band Glasvegas will be at the Magic Stick on Sat, Apr 4th while jazz great Chick Corea will be in Ann Arbor at Hill Auditorium. The Magic Stick will host local rockers the Hentchmen on Sun, Apr 5th while legendary British Folk singer Graham Parker will be playing at Callahan’s.

If you are not interested in the NCAA tournament despite Michigan St making it to the Final Four along with U Conn, Villanova and N Carolina (I’m rooting for Villanova since I am from Big East territory), you can also check out some free NCAA related concerts by the Riverfront. One of my least favorite singers, Jesse McCartney, will be playing with funk/hip hop act N.E.R.D. on Friday while the Pussycat Dolls, Keith Sweat and Gavin DeGraw will provide tunes on Saturday. Sunday is the big day with Staind, Gym Class Heroes and Fergie. I hope the weather brightens up this weekend.

FREE TICKETS: Gogol Bordello - Royal Oak Music Theatre -

MCB has a free pair of tickets to the 10th emailer

Gogol Bordello
Live at the Royal Oak Music Theatre
Tuesday June 2nd 2009

AEG Live presents Gogol Bordello.
Come and witness the bizarre and fantastic theatrics of the ‘Gypsy Punks’ live at the Royal Oak Music Theatre Tuesday, June 2, 2009.

Tickets go on sale Friday, April 3rd at 5pm.

Gogol Bordello is a multiethnic Gypsy punk band from the Lower East Side of New York City that formed in 1999 and is known for their theatrical stage shows. They are a band that looks, sounds, and generally acts over-the-top. However, front man Eugene Hutz is a truly great vocalist and one-of-a-kind showman, and his band creates such an indefinable, chaotic ball of noise even seasoned ears may feel a little disoriented. “The people in the band bounce energy off each other and that’s what we capture on the record,” Eugene Hutz said in a statement.

The band’s sound is described in its bio as “supercharged music based on a brutal gypsy two-step rhythm that sounds like an Eastern European cousin of ska augmented by punk, metal, rap, flamenco, roots reggae, Italian spaghetti, Western twang, dub and other sounds generated by gypsies and rebels from across the globe.”

Gogol Bordello released their first album Voi-La Intruder in 1999. The album reinforced the bands’ standing as an influential and inspirational force in music. Since their first release, the band has collaborated with powerhouse artists like Madonna, Primus, Flogging Molly, and Cake. They continue to take audiences captive and will soon arrive at Royal Oak Music Theatre.

THE WHIP TOUR NORTH AMERICA WITH LATE OF THE PIER AND
DEADMAU5; U.S. TELEVISION DEBUT ON JIMMY KIMMEL LIVE IN APRIL!

UK electro-rock act, The Whip, kick off their North American tour this week in support of their debut album, X MARKS DESTINATION. The band played multiple shows at SXSW and will perform at Winter Music Conference followed by a tour with Late of the Pier and DeadMau5. The Whip will also make their U.S. television debut on April 22nd on ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live!

It’s been quite a year for the Manchester band, touring non-stop at some of last summer’s biggest festivals like Glastonbury, and Reading as well as U.S. stops at SXSW and CMJ. Now The Whip bring their blend of dance-rock stateside with propulsive songs like “Trash” which Spin called “a killer single…can wreck a room” and the more ethereal “Dubsex,” which was recently featured on MTV’s, The City.

On their debut album, X MARKS DESTINATION, now available in the U.S. on Razor & Tie, The Whip aim to be the sound of your night out. Live, their music becomes the soundtrack to a hedonistic dance party, expertly capturing the exhilarating feeling of being at a festival and dancing till dawn.

Pansy Division: Life In A Gay Rock Band!

Undeniably one of the most important and influential gay music acts in the last twenty years, Pansy Division pioneered the “queercore” genre long before other gay musicians had the confidence to come out of the closet. With album titles like Undressed (Lookout! Records, 1993) and Deflowered (Lookout! Records, 1994), and song titles like "Bill & Ted's Homosexual Adventure," their bluntness and humor stood out amidst the '90s alterna-rock scene.Raised on 60s pop and 70s punk, Pansy Division wrote in-your-face lyrics with a sense of humor, defying stereotypes in both the rock scene and the gay community, and launching a queer punk movement that also included bands like Tribe 8, Team Dresch, God Is My Co-Pilot and Fifth Column.

The band released six albums in six years in the 1990s and toured extensively, sharing stages with other queercore bands as well as other punk bands. In 1994 label mates Green Day took Pansy Division on tour at the height of their breakthrough album Dookie, giving Pansy Division a chance to blow the minds of, and in many cases inspire, tens of thousands of high-school kids across America.Pansy Division‘s newest album, That’s So Gay -- the band’s eighth studio album (and their first new album in six years) -- is raucous and raunchy as well as being serious-minded. Featuring some of the band’s catchiest and most rocking songs ever, the album includes a duet with legendary punk icon Jello Biafra (Dead Kennedys) on “Average Men.”

The band is also releasing a DVD documentary, Pansy Division: Life in a Gay Rock Band, a fast-paced, intimate and humorous account of one of rock’s most fearless acts. Using original and archive footage and covering over fifteen years as a group, from their first days in San Francisco’s underground music scene to a full-fledged stadium tour with Green Day and beyond, the DVD features interviews and appearances by Lookout Records founder Larry Livermore, Jessie “Luscious” Townley (The Criminals, Alternative Tentacles), Jello Biafra (Dead Kennedys, Alternative Tentacles), Rob Halford (Judas Priest) and Billie Joe Armstrong (Green Day). With a bonus disc containing live concert footage, Pansy Division: Life in a Gay Rock Band provides an essential history of a genre of alternative music that is only now beginning to be appreciated.

LISTEN TO "CATERPILLAR" FROM THE RUSSIAN ROULETTE EP

The six incredible tracks found on UK songwriter Ed Harcourt's new EP, Russian Roulette, are as personal as they come. Each song recounts the many emotions and thoughts he's experienced, embracing both the high and low times one endures. The track "Caterpillar" points to a particularly intense and emotional moment in Harcourt’s life when earlier this year, his newborn daughter Roxy had been placed in an incubator, deeply worrying both Harcourt and his wife as they sat idle, waiting for their Roxy to recover. Describing the song and experience, Harcourt goes on to say, "It's the first song I've written about her. She was a little ill and we waited for her in the hospital for the chrysalis so we could take her home."

Children's debut thrash metal wailer Hard Times Hangin' At The End Of The World is out May 12th on Kemado Records. Formed through jam sessions by guitarists Skyler Spohn, Jonny Ollsin (formerly of Vancouver’s S.T.R.E.E.T.S.), and drummer Adam Bennati (of Early Man), the NYC trio laid waste to clubs in and around the city beginning in late 2006, releasing their "Death Tribe" 12" single in early 2008. Hard Times' six massive tracks marry intricate, narrative dual guitar work with a frenzied, wired demeanor.
The band has crafted a set of meticulous compositions, including several marathon-length tracks that stretch past the seven minute mark. Produced by Joe Blaney (whose hundreds of credits include the Clash's Combat Rock ), the band tracked the songs live at Applehead Studios in Woodstock, NY, on all analog gear and 2" tape for a truly thick, punishing and fluid sound.

Bells & Whistles
(June 9th; Esperanza Plantation)

Though he’s a twenty-something year-old from the small town of Mountain Home, Arkansas, Chase Pagan’s music sounds like it grew out of a man who has soaked in the spirit of a vast array of musical eras and subcultures.

His new album, Bells & Whistles, channels everything from honky-tonk theatricality to the stripped-down intimacy of a folk troubadour to the visceral nature of independent rock music. Ultimately, it’s Pagan’s unique and commanding voice that truly defines and distinguishes his music.Whether it’s a hushed croon, soaring falsetto, or another permutation, Pagan’s voice adapts as necessary to paint the pictures of his lyrics.
Similarly, as an accomplished multi-instrumentalist he has a rich platter of sounds to call upon at any given moment. Pagan, who co-produced the album, plays the vast majority of instruments including piano, drums, bass, guitar, accordion, and banjo. The juxtaposition of the first two tracks alone show off the album’s range.
On the opening number “The Lonely Life,” Pagan employs a ghostly coo over a two-step country groove to sing as a father communicating with his estranged son. “Life Garden” immediately follows with a contrasting palette of cabaret-like piano, marching band horns, and psychedelic guitar.
Throughout the album, Pagan has a chameleon-like ability to embody various characters. This is most evident on “John and Betty,” where he writes from the perspective of prostitute-turned wife-to-be, ‘Betty,’ as well as “Don’t Be Gay (Working Title)” – the tale of two parents and their contrasting reactions to their son’s burgeoning sexuality.
Whether he is singing with minimal accompaniment or engaging in vocal gymnastics over a large scope of sound, Pagan is perpetually earnest in his delivery.
It is this steadfast sincerity, his decision to convey every note and every lyric with equal fervor, that makes it a pleasure to go on the album-long journey with him.

Armed with their unbridled, raw talent, The Last Vegas posses the ability to musically beat crowds into submission, leaving fans no choice but to beg for more. The band destroyed the competition as they outplayed close to 8,000 entrants for the Guitar Center On Stage contest, landing the chance to open for the world's most notorious rock band, Motley Crue, as well as record and management deals alongside the rock icons. With influences like Johnny Thunders, AC/DC, Black Flag, Misfits, Guns N' Roses and the Sex Pistols, The Last Vegas sought out rambunctious music to get their adolescent blood pumping.

The bands' first concerts include Cheap Trick, AC/DC and KISS, influencing them as they grew up in punk rock clubs throughout the local Chicago scene. Keeping the punk rock dream alive, Danny Smash was into the glam scene, Chad Cherry began playing in noise experimental bands, and brothers Adam and Nathan Arling started punk bands doing Johnny Thunders and Ramones covers while John Wator was growing up on a strong breed of metal and hard rock.

Living the small town life in Normal, IL (really), the members of The Last Vegas were anything but. Combining three of their favorite past times, Adam and Nathan began playing house parties throughout town, where they could also drink free beer and score girls. John was on the same path, and soon the three connected through blasting loud music late at night and jam sessions to irritate the neighbors. Creatively in sync, the three began writing their own material and made the decision to head to Chicago for some new action and more trouble. It was there that the three met their lead vocalist, Chad Cherry at a Roller Derby Girl event a year later. Chad then brought ex-band mate and childhood friend, Danny Smash into the line-up to stack the rhythm section.

When The Last Vegas woke up the morning of Monday, November 10th, they were one of six final unsigned bands, eagerly awaiting the chance to play in front their idols, Motley Crue, with everything on the line at the Guitar Center On Stage finals. After a demanding performance later that evening at the world famous Whisky A-Go-Go, The Last Vegas claimed victory over the "greatest prize in rock," which catapulted them into a dream sequence of writing, recording and producing their first single as a signed band and a gig opening for Motley at the Hollywood Palladium four days later. It was that night at the Palladium when the announcement was made the band would also be going on tour with Motley in 2009.

"The overall talent and energy of The Last Vegas surpassed our expectations," said Motley Crue's Vince Neil. "Motley Crue is excited to pass the torch on to these amazing musicians, just as Ozzy did for us over 25 years ago."A whirlwind musical journey shortly ensued for The Last Vegas. After they were hand picked as winners by the members of Motley Crue, the band immediately went into the studio with acclaimed producers Nikki Sixx, DJ Ashba and Marti Frederiksen (Aerosmith, Mick Jagger and Buckcherry) to record their first single, "I'm Bad." The single was premiered exclusively on AOL just two weeks after the competition. At midnight the following day, iTunes became the exclusive digital single retailer and notified their email list of over 40 million people that The Last Vegas' new single was available for download.
"When artists talk about when they 'made it' they always say it 'happened overnight,' but it really has been an overnight phenomena for us," said The Last Vegas front man, Chad Cherry. "From opening for Motley at the Palladium just four days after they announced we had won the contest to releasing our first single "I'm Bad" - Motley Crue and Guitar Center On-Stage have changed our lives in an instant."

Everything Burns is a non-profit that encourages people to get involved in their community; a non-profit to get others involved in other non-profits. You can find more information about it here: http://tour.everythingburns.org/.

The idea I had for my non-profit is to have a benefit show with all proceeds going towards Everything Burns and a new local charity (who partnered with Shirock when they came through Detroit in February), Generation Goodwill.

Generation Goodwill’s mission is “ We aim to inspire and enable Metro Detroit’s young people to make a positive and lasting impact on the region’s success through service, leadership and innovation. We hope to see the young people of Metro Detroit will develop effective leadership skills and appreciation for service as they become involved as advocates and leaders in supporting Goodwill Industries of Greater Detroit’s efforts to help the region become trained, trusted and ready to work.”

Also, their objectives and goals are:
* To collectively engage young people in projects with Goodwill Industries of Greater Detroit that are challenging, rewarding and educational.
* To expose, explain, and develop solutions for the unmet needs of the unemployed community.
* To promote among young people a greater understanding of the barriers facing the Metro Detroit community.
* To inspire and encourage a lifetime ethic of service among young people.

Speck Mountain - Berkley Front - Fri April 3rd

Speck Mountain
Berkley Front
Friday April 3rd 2009
3087 W. 12 Mile Rd
Berkley, MI 48072
21+
Download ~ I Feel Eternal
A divine marriage between melody and drone that flirts with the smiling demons of old-school indulgence and the redemptive angels that stir in their wake, Speck Mountain plays Berkley Front on Friday, April 3, 2009 during their national tour.

Categorized as space-rock, dream-pop, even shoegaze, co-leaders Karl Briedrick (Guitar, Bass) and Marie-Claire Balabanian (Vocals, Guitar, Bass) like to call their music “ambient soul.” Releasing their sophomore album, Some Sweet Relief, nationally on March 17, 2009 through Carrot Top Records, the self-described “musical soul mates” write as a team, communicating in intuitive, womb-curled melody, exploded texture and spiky rhythm.

On the forthcoming album, the songs fill out the record’s canon with piano, organ, sax and vintage effects, the mixes booby-trapped all over with headphone-happy detail. Live, this new material projects a loose, narcotic swagger, taking off from atmospheric majesty into full-on hypnotic assault.

UPDATE - FREE TICKETS: LOTUS - Crofoot Ballroom Pontiac - Wed April 1st 2009

LOTUS AT THE CROFOOT BALLROOM PONTIAC ON APRIL 1ST
update: free pair of tickets to the show to the 3rd emailer
Lotus formed at a Mennonite college that had banned on-campus dancing as late as the 1980’s, and has been creatively fusing electronic dance music with instrumental post-rock for the past eight years.

Armed with a massive light rig and one of the most energetic shows on the circuit, Lotus was a go-to act for late night festival slots this past summer, performing at ROTHBURY, Summerfest, Camp Bisco, and others. Also in 2008, Lotus saw advance sellouts for multiple shows at the Fox Theatre in Boulder, Irving Plaza in NYC, TLA in Philadelphia, Higher Ground in Burlington, and Park West in Chicago.

The band’s remix album, Copy Paste Repeat: Lotus Remixed was released in spring of 2007 to critical acclaim. (if we had a top 100 list this record would be on it)

Lotus’ most recent album, Hammerstrike (released in October 2008), finds the band reaching back in order to move forward. Primarily recorded live in one room to analog tape by Bill Moriarty (Dr. Dog, Man Man), the album captures a sound that harkens back to the 70's but never slips into nostalgic retreads.
The compositions are focused and melodic, filled out with orchestration including swelling violins and cellos, banjo, wordless choirs, and electronic noises. Though the tracks range from dance floor ready rockers to soaring post-rock instrumentals, the album is held together by a sanguine spirit pervading each track.

The big guitars, feedback, and distortion serve an optimistic purpose. It is a decidedly American feel that invokes big skies, open roads, and a zealous yet naïve pursuit of the idea that defeat will never be conceded.

The Sugarcoats - Lager House Detroit - Sat March 28th

Saturday, March 28
w/The Blackbelts, Tone & Niche, The Boy Bathing
10pm

The Sugarcoats are a kickass newish project of Corey Weedon and Todd McNulty from Lee Marvin Computer Arm. Magic Shop's Jake Culkowski played his last show with the group on Parade Day at Slow's, so original bassist Neal will be conveniently stepping back in. They've got that Woodbridge sound... it's a true commonwealth 'round them parts!

The Blackbelts are from Chicago and make their way to Detroit to play with their friends in the 'coats. Detroit's Tone & Niche is a guitar and violin duo that brews a refined, light-jangled, warm-toned folk with pensive, setting-sun piano accompaniments and shimmering beautiful violins. Singing saws and steady strummed acoustics carry foggy, world-weary lyrics—the perfect soundtrack for Detroit.

The Boy Bathing is a NYC-based indie band fronted by David Hurwitz. Hurwitz has toured under the moniker since 2004. The band's music focuses on imaginative lyricism and wistful story-telling wrapped around infectious melodies, and a live performance that borders on theatrical. Their first full-length record, A Fire to Make Preparations, was released independently last summer with the help of Team Clermont and Orchard Distribution. Other songs of their’s are featured on European and US compilations with The Arcade Fire, Sufjan Stevens and Jens Lenkman, and they have performed with Kevin Devine, Apollo Sunshine, Crooked Fingers, and The Honorary Title. This is shaping up to be a good year for the group as they recently signed with Canon Records.

Neil Young coming to town (kind of)

Here are two new videos for two new songs from Fork in the Road, shot by Neil Young himself. "Cough Up the Bucks" gives us Young in a suit, reading the Wall Street Journal and asking "Where did all the money go...where did all the cash flow?" Good questions!

The video for "Light A Candle" features Young's wife Pegi holding a lit candle in the window of the RV behind him. The song is a classic-sounding Neil Young ballad that opens with Young singing "Instead of cursing the darkness, light a candle for where we're going..."

Wild at Heart - Tuesday March 24

Bill Ketelhut provides the "blog" to this anti-blog
He has a radio program on WXOU out of Oakland University

Wild At Heart

Happy to announce that WXOU 88.3FM (www.wxou.org will be celebrating its 43rd annual Birthday Bash this Wednesday night. We have some great featuring some great local music by some area favorites such as Manna & Quail, Oscillating Fan Club, Citizen Smile & Tripple Crown. The show starts at 6PM and is free to the public.

It will be held in the Gold Rooms at the Oakland Center so come on out to support some great local bands and get some free swag courtesy of the station.

Just saw a wonderful production a Meadowbrook Theatre of “The Trip To Bountiful” and while sad Joanna Cassidy was unable to make it out for the production due to surgery (and she is doing well), this production is just wonderful. Just recently in my life I have been getting nostalgic after numerous college friends have found me on Facebook and for me, this translates big time to the main theme of this show. As much as I wish I can return to the seemingly better days of my life at college, the lead character, Mrs Watts (wonderfully portrayed by Mary Benson), wants to return home to the town of Bountiful. She has been in the big city for 20 years with her son Ludie (Jim Porterfield) and his wife Jessie Mae (Barbara Coven). For the past five years Mrs Watts has been trying to leave home to return home before she dies but is always stopped by her family. The past years in a small 2 room apartment and the constant nagging by Jessie May who leads a more modern life (going to movies, drinking Coco-cola and weekly visits to the beauty parlor) have caused Mrs Watts yearning for the pleasures of the small town life to increasingly grow (washing hair by the well, singing hymns, digging in the dirt).

In the play, Mrs Watts gets away by bus and through her talking with fellow passengers, bus station employees and a local policeman, we learn to indentify with her desire and hope she finds what she is looking for in Bountiful. The play contains a lot of hope and also shows the contrast of different types of lives. The key player for me is Ludie who seemingly loves both the modern and the nostalgic world and tries to find a balance with the two most important women in his life. Make a trip to Meadowbrook to experience this pleasurable play.

My grade is an A-. Go to www.mbtheatre.com for info

You can also check out their schedule for next year which includes “The Legend Of Sleepy Hollow”, the serial killer thriller “Mindgame”, “Enchanted April” and the musical “Breaking Up Is Hard To Do” (with music by Neil Sedaka). Please stop by at the gallery next door to the theatre for “Art In Cities, Art Of Cities” for a look by various artist at their interpretations of what city life is about.

Also had the pleasure of attending “Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber Of Fleet Street” at the Fisher. This production differs from the traditional format by having all the actors playing their own instruments. This does distract a bit from the story and some purists I talked to hate this version. I am a bit more open minded towards adaption’s and allowed myself to be drawn to the music though I do agree some that it draws some of the strength from the main story. For those not familiar, Sweeney is based on the story of Benjamin Barker who finds himself sent to prison in Australia when the local Judge decides he wants his wife. He manages to escape 15 years later and gets back to London where he meets Mrs Lovett (my favorite cast member in this production – Carrie Cimma has a powerful voice and a lovely way about the stage even with the tuba) who runs a meat pie shop. She tells Benjamin (who now goes by the alias of Sweeney Todd) that his wife is dead and his daughter is held by the judge. Sweeney vows revenge and people get made into meat pies. Overall, the songs are beautiful but the main issue is that the actors are not all that strong as they could be since casting is also for the ability to play an instrument. This allows lesser actors, though talented musicians, to play the parts and this then can cause some characters to become forgettable. Besides Carrie, I did enjoy Bob Bohan as the Beadle and Merritt David James as Sweeney but they needed a stronger Judge. So what this all comes down to is we have a unique production that might turn away fans of the original play but is worth it for those who like to experience something different. Wow!

Grade: B-. Go to www.nederlanderdetroit.com for more info.

Haven’t got to watch a lot of the NCAA tournament but I was excited to see that #12 Ball St upset #5 Tennessee in women’s NCAA in the first round which is the first time Tennessee has lost in the first round. Go MAC!!

Saw a couple of films which I didn’t have much hope for but which ended up surprising me. The one I can talk about this week is “Duplicity” starring Clive Owen and Julia Roberts as two corporate spies that decide to team up in order to manipulate a corporate race to corner the market on a medical innovation that will reap huge profits and enable them to lead an extravagant lifestyle together. The film was written and directed by Tony Gilroy who brought us the Bourne movies and such fare as “Michael Clayton” and “Dolores Claiborne”. I wasn’t sure about the film until the scene with rival corporate execs played by Tom Wilkinson and Paul Giamatti have a funny fistfight on an airline tarmac and the movie just gets better from their. At times it might try to throw too many twists at us but Owen and Roberts ground the film enough to make it thoroughly enjoyable. The movie works as both a romantic comedy and spy-thriller which should make it a nice date movie. My grade is a B+.

For those near Macomb Community College, check out the new exhibit at the Cultural Center entitled “The Sixties: A Decade That Defined A Generation”. Despite being the decade I was born in (which is surprisingly missing from the exhibit itself), a lot of major social and cultural events took place which are showcased by the exhibit. You can find everything from memorials about the Vietnam War to Pebbles and Bam-Bam dolls, Man on the Moon to a 1965 Mustang or Martin Luther King’s “I Have A Dream” to local rock posters. Go online to www.macombcenter.com for an update of 60’s themed concerts and lectures from such icons as Gloria Steinem, Richie Havens and the Smothers Brothers.

They have local historians talking about the significance of everything from the JFK assassination to the music of Motown so don’t waste anytime and check it out now.

I also saw a wonderful Eagles concert this past week so here is some Eagles trivia. Their album “One Of These Nights” contains the futuristic sounding instrumental "Journey of the Sorcerer," which is known to many as the theme to The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

Rothbury tickets go on sale March 30th and they have a pretty decent line-up including Bob Dylan, Sam Roberts Band, The Dead, Willie Nelson, Flogging Molly, Ani DiFranco and more.

Go to www.rothburyfestival.com for the complete lineup.

The Detroit Movement Festival also announced it’s line-up including Afrika Bambaata, Derrick May, Carl Cox, Z-Trip and 31 others so far including an special opening night party at the Fillmore with Prodigy. Get more info at www.paxahau.com

It is a light week for music with Chicago and Earth, Wind & Fire playing the Caesar’s Windsor both Fri and Sat night.

Since the 2008 passage of the Michigan film tax credits, there’s never been an opportunity like the Michigan Movie Networking Event. The event will bring together industry professionals from throughout the Midwest to network, discuss and learn about the opportunities the Michigan film industry has to offer.

Special attempts have been made to bring both investors and distributors to this important first-of-its-kind event. Investors are looking for opportunities to benefit from the film industry in Michigan and distributors are looking for production houses with a catalog of movie products.

“There’s never been anything like this. This is an opportunity for everyone – from someone with an idea for a movie or an actress, to a bank with money to lend for a project – to come together, exchange cards and portfolios, network and get ideas off the ground,” said Alex Greene, Emmy- and Telly-award winning Creator of the children's TV program "My Bedbugs" and Executive Producer of Greenestuff Productions, one of the event’s speakers.

“This area has needed this event,” said Lew Smith, chief operating officer of Vanir Entertainment, Inc., partners with the Crofoot on the Michigan Movie Networking Event. “People have been so desperate to connect with others. This is a chance to get everyone in the room at the same time and on the same page – to grow the film industry in this state.” Smith said that from early promotion of the event, he’s already received commitments from people as far away as Traverse City, Chicago and Grand Rapids who plan to attend. Professionals from across four states have been invited. He added the Michigan Movie Networking Event is modeled after events of this type in Los Angeles, New York and Nashville.

Dan McGowan, of the Crofoot, said,
“This is one of those clean-everything-else-from-your-calendar events. It’s a chance to bring a hundred business cards and come back with a hundred business cards from people you might never have met otherwise.”

The Michigan Movie Networking Event is hosted by Vanir Entertainment, a Rochester Hills-based multi-media entertainment company, and the Crofoot. Vanir kicks off its contributions to the Michigan film industry in April with the debut of the “Michigan Marquee” TV show on WTVS, Detroit’s Public Television station. The weekly, half-hour “Michigan Marquee” will feature interviews with industry insiders and up-to-date reports on film projects across the state.

Tickets for the Michigan Film Networking Event are $20 at the door or on http://www.ticketweb.com/ .
Those interested in displaying at the event should contact Lew Smith

PHOTOS: Liz Larin @ Black Lotus by RiazK

MCB's RiazK was down for the Liz Larin show at The Black Lotus this past saturday night

"The Black Lotus is a great little brewery tucked away in the heart of Clawson. The place is warm and inviting, smoke-free and besides the bar and the dine-in tables, it has a small enclave towards the back where people can kick back on leather sofas, pick a book off the shelf and just soak-in the ambience.

Liz Larin is a true "rocker" with an incredible voice and can more than hold her own on lead. She packed the Black Lotus with an incredible stampede of fans, a lot of whom drove all the way over from Mt. Clemens to see her perform. Accompanied by an exceptional percussionist and an astute bassist, Liz created an incredible ambience with riveting riffs and soothing vocals.

A definite must-checkout if you haven't already!!!!"

AND 17 FINE ARTISTS AND CRAFTERS
SILENT AUCTION OF ART

PIKE ROOM AT THE CROFOOT
1 South Saginaw Pontiac,

FRIDAY MARCH 27th
Doors open 8PM-11PM,
Tickets $10 at the Door,
$8 in advance at www.thecrofoot.com

The ‘dotte Arts Project, the ‘dAP, is looking to raise funds for the summer festival and the general running of the project throughout the year. The purpose of the ‘dAP is to promote emerging artists whenever possible.

“If it’s through our summer festival with the Wyandotte Street Art Fair or if it’s through smaller art shows like this fundraiser,” says co-chair Aimee Rodriguez, “ we want to give newer artists every chance possible to encourage them into continuing creating. The ultimate goal being the connection between the artist and the buyer, that connection is where the magic is created. Nothing motivates an artist more than for some stranger to purchase their work.”

The Crofoot has numerous artists and musician opportunities throughout the year. It's an extremely artsy venue which makes it the perfect backdrop for the 'dotte Arts Project fundraiser. They have art shows and one of their nights each week, Phonotropic, focuses on showcases some of the area’s best musicians.

“One of our goals at the Crofoot is to connect musicians and artists from around the country, and specifically Metro Detroit. Working with ‘DAP is a great partnership, because we bring downriver artists to Pontiac and vice versa.

The fundraiser is going to feature 17 artists who are in different stages of their art endeavors including some who this is the first event of this kind that they are doing and some who do this often and are seasoned at it.

The list includes Audrey Pongracz who has been with the ‘dAP since its inception two years ago; DeEtta a painter and jeweler; Shionne Designs jewelry design; Kevin Beehner a painter; Talking Squid a crafter; Roko a painter; Jennifer Proescher a crafter and jeweler; Beth Amber a painter and photographer; Terry Walsh a painting and crafter, Patricia Goodell and HFCC Pottery group; Rudy Salazar III a painter; Mike Wood a photographer; Norma Nothings Painting and Jewelry; Bea Jacobs jewelry; Glass Action; Reware Vintage; Lish Dorset and more …

The music lineup is going to have a more old timey feel with indie blue grass bands Misty Lyn & The Big Beautiful, Frontier Ruckus and Tone & Niche. DJ Bouget will be spinning between the sets.

The Nolan Factor - Monday March 23nd 2009

Jeff Nolan - one of MCB's longest contributors will be dropping a few posts from time to time about music / art / state of the economy / women / food / car repair / laundry tips
"The Nolan Factor"

FRIDAY
MARCH 20
Luna Lounge

Charlie Slick was a few songs into his set when I arrived at Luna. By this time he was shirtless and covered in glitter, marching back and forth on the stage microphone in hand. Epileptic LED light bars surrounded the rear portion of the stage making Charlie look like a fully decked out Christmas tree. Mr. Slick was performing without his longtime light box operator Andy Grabrysiak, and was without his trademark white light boxes entirely, opting instead for the schizophrenic electronic strobes. He began to throw glitter onto the audience and moved onto the dance floor to perform in middle of the crowd. An anorexic girl with highlights and skin-tight zebra pants wobbled back and forth with her boyfriend in a striped shirt.

The highlight of his performance came when Charlie began to swing his synthesizer over his head and played a song with his synthesizer held in the air over the dance floor. At the end of his set Charlie invited the crowd onto the stage with him and then slowed the beat down until everyone was seated on the stage, covered in sparkly silver glitter out of a handheld shaker that was finally hurled against the ceiling and ricocheted across Luna.
Someone within earshot said "Now thats a pile of douchebags!"
Looking around we discovered who it was
Charlie's old roommate was sitting next to us
and obviously never got his deposit back or something

The headline band of the evening was a band called the Plastic Shapes. They were more or less a cookie-cutter electronic band with a guitarist who played a flying-V guitar. The guitarist was very enthusiastic, striking poses like Eddie Van Halen and tapping the frets at every possible moment. The drums were a unique mix of electronic beats and live-drumming that interlaced seamlessly. Monotone dance beats and hair metal guitar riffs populated all songs.

The best show of the evening for us was the Champions of Breakfast,
although I arrived fashionably late, sadly after they played missing the show

SATURDAY
MARCH 21
Small's Bar

Mild Cartoon Violence began the evening with a set of early nineties-influenced ska music, at one point even covering a Sublime song. A tight, clean guitar chirped over thick, melodic bass-lines. Danceable drum beats and cheery vocals filled out the rest of their sound. I quite enjoyed their mushroom cuts and extreme enthusiasm to be playing, it didn't matter that at this point most of the attendees were still milling around the bar and pretending there was no band on stage.

Near the end of the set I wandered into the bathroom to find Bryan Metro of Jesus Chainsaw Massacre painting his face blue in the mirror, then his legs, then his torso, and finally his arms.
I watched him do this while he babbled about a Flatliners spin-off in which he was cast to play the assistant, but was told his teeth were too jacked.

Charging onto the stage after the soundcheck was the shirtless blue man I had encountered in the restroom. “I work for the government, and I left my Hustler magazine in the particle room- look at me now!” he declared before launching into a spectacle of a show in which he levitated a cinder block with his mind, lip-synched to an i-Pod, put a bucket over his head, and demonstrated his ability to do four push-ups in a row.

Dirty lo-fi guitar and beats generated by a 20 year-old Casio keyboard were the backing to Bryan Metro's karaoke voice and self-aggrandizing testimonials. By the end of the set he was dodging glow sticks and polyethylene Hawaiian lays thrown by the audience. He then danced off the stage, soon to be followed by his one-man band, who first smashed his empty beer bottle on the floor, threw his guitar against his amp to ringing feedback, and yelled thanks threw a broken microphone. This is rock and roll.

Almost Free followed, the show was organized by them to promote the release of their new album, Modern Mistakes. I had encountered the singer's father earlier in the night “He's a great boy!” was his claim. The band's sound was something between the Ventures' surf rock melodies and Sonic Youth's noisy droning non-chords. Added to this were ghostly vocals that were nearly empty of any discernible emotion. The show was powerful and provocative, standing on the edge of being dark and brooding, yet it couldn't really be described as such.

SUNDAY
MARCH 22
Crofoot Ballroom

I'm lost as I wonder where to start with this show... The first thing I saw when I entered the Crofoot and was trying to figure out why I wasn't on the list was a girl collapse on the floor next to the elevator. She was clearly on something, but what exactly I could not determine with any accuracy, and it seemed as though the paramedics who picked her up off the street were just as puzzled. Next, an asian kid dressed all in black threw up next to the guy taking tickets.
This was before I even made it onto the floor.
Surely we missed at least 5 other notable moments while I was stuck at the door until they figured out the list problem and in we went without further delay.

Next I was pleased to discover that Ratatat was kind enough to speak to just three members of the press, pre-approved by their tour manager, myself not included.
Photographers were limited to pictures without flashes, for the first three songs only.

Once they took the stage I was pleased to see that there was a huge video and elaborate flashing light show that accompanied their set. An array of drums, keyboards, blinding LEDs, lasers, and smoke machines lined all sides of the stage.
The bass was more powerful than the voice of God,
the guitar had a perfect tone that was neither distorted nor clean, and the beats were all precisely timed. The bassist occasionally pretended to play electronic drums that didn't made a sound,
and occasionally spit on the crowd.

The video that they projected was at times curiously similar to (nearly a direct copy of) Dan Deacon and Jimmy Joe-Roche's Ultimate Reality, a remix of Arnold Schwarzenegger films in psychedelic rainbow technicolor, designs by The Sweet Smelling Surfaces,
and the screensavers on my parent's old PC.

The music was tight and identical to the sound on the albums, which is to be expected when the music is prerecorded. The crowd showed tremendous enthusiasm and did not stop moving up and down, even when the music stopped. People were carried on the hands of the audience all over the floor and deposited into the waiting arms of the bouncers on stage all night. The aftermath of the show was impressive: a dance floor littered with smashed cups, articles of clothing, and aluminum confetti,
and a bathroom dripping in all bodily fluids imaginable.

The Decks - Lager House Corktown Detroit - Tues March 24th

w/Hammer No More The Fingers
Steve McCauley
10pm
PJ's Lager House
1254 Michigan Ave
Corktown - Detroit
313.961.4668
The Decks are Detroit's highest energy twenty somethings with catchy hooks and infectious attitude. Get on over and check them out if you can...they put on a nice show.

Hammer No More The Fingers is a 3 piece from Durham/Chapel Hill, NC. In 1994 they were a collective of 10 year olds playing all original music except for an Archers of Loaf cover. Pixies, Chili Peppers, TMBG, Nirvana probably formed the mold. So you could shoehorn them into an early 90's indie revival type thing, but that's a little like putting a squid in a sweater. Hammer No More The Fingers' sound is luxuriously full for a 3 piece. They write catchy, edgy, slightly off-kilter rock music and their live show is powerful and reckless, yet somehow tasteful and refined. Searing, mellow, crunchy, they do brain surgery and tree removal with the same pocket knife, producing a small-club-arena-rock, happy-from-the-inside, soul jam.

Steve McCauley is the Scarlet Oaks frontman who is also excellent solo. No twangin' aside, Steve will lay it down Hank Williams style (minus the spina bifida).

Also credit to The Decks myspace page which is where I noticed that the gories are playing the blast off festival in june over in the UK

Thanks The Decks Myspace Page!

MEDESKI MARTIN & WOOD ARE BACK

WITH RADIOLARIANS II

Restlessly inventive improvising trio Medeski Martin & Wood are set to release the second installment of The Radiolarian Series on April 14th, 2009.

Recorded last summer, Radiolarians II demonstrates MMW's bold and wild side. Strong rock riffs and hooks butt up against noise, and classic jazz seamlessly. The jazz tunes on this record feel fresh, yet familiar.

The Radiolarian Series named after a type of single-celled organism with a dazzlingly intricate exoskeleton is designed to subvert the age-old music industry cycle of write>record>tour. The trio, consisting of keyboardist John Medeski, drummer Billy Martin, and bassist Chris Wood, convened for brief writing retreats, performed only that new material on tour, recorded the material immediately after getting off the road, and are now releasing these albums on their own Indirecto label.

From his time as lead singer of Sunny Day Real Estate and The Fire Theft to his accomplished solo career, Jeremy Enigk’s singing has had the remarkable quality of becoming more nuanced with each album he records. It’s as if each of his life experiences literally adds a new color to his voice. On his new album, OK Bear, he reminds us once again why he is credited with influencing an entire generation of song-writers.

Enigk opts for a relatively stripped-down rock aesthetic on OK Bear compared to the orchestral nature of his previous two solo albums. In this setting the dynamic qualities of his voice shine more than ever. Although fewer instruments are employed, the dramatic crescendos that are a staple of Enigk’s work are present as ever, and provide a satisfying catharsis to each and every song.

The sheets of noise that bookend “Late of Camera” form the album’s noisiest moments, and the song itself is shaped by intense peaks and dreamy valleys. On the other hand, Enigk’s voice quivers with fragility on the minimalist slow-burner, “Vale Oso.” As usual, he explores the subtleties of the human psyche with a complete lack of pretension, but Enigk also delves into lyrical themes about subjects that are entirely separated from himself. For example, “Sant Feliu de Guíxols” is about the town in Spain where the album was recorded, as well as the Saint for which it was named after.

As immediately satisfying on the first listen as it is revelatory after several spins, it is no wonder that Enigk already has a place in music history. OK Bear ensures that he will continue to command our attention for years to come

DJ Skeet Skeet has put together an awesome mix tape to preview the Afro-punk showcases at SXSW this year!

Afro-Punk is pleased to announce the fifth annual Afro-Punk Music and Art Festival, returning to Brooklyn’s iconic Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) July 3-7, 2009. Afro-Punk will also present two showcases at SXSW this year, and will take their music and art show on the road next fall. What is Afro-Punk?Afro-Punk is a cultural movement for tens of thousands of multi-cultural urban kids across the nation (and the globe) who listen to a diverse range of rock and pop and other genres of music that are not easily classifiable as "urban".

Ground Zero for this movement is the annual Afro-Punk Music and Art Festival, an annual multi-day event held in Brooklyn. The festival celebrates music, film, skate, and most importantly, the fiercely independent and influential individuals that are the lifeblood of the AP community. Past Afro-punk events have featured a diverse group of artists, including The Noisettes, The Dirtbombs, Saul Williams, and The Apes, as well as trend-spotting recent Grammy nominees Janelle Monae and Little Jackie at last year's festival. AP has also garnered praise from a wide range of media outlets ranging from Pitchfork, URB, Vibe, and Nylon to Variety, Entertainment Weekly, and The Los Angeles Times, and was the subject of an "Urban Eye" video feature by Melena Ryzik in the New York Times last year.

Black Rose - Pike Room @ Crofoot Pontiac - Sat March 21st

I was browsing this weekends lineup over at the crofoot pontiac today and it is so cool that a place like this exists....just this weekend alone they have an acoustic, electronic, hip hop, hard rock and of course PHONOTROPIC

but this show caught my eye because I have never heard of a band being sponsered by a motorcycle club let alone
The Detroit Renegades

The band is called Black Rose and listed as the drummer
is Chad Smith from Chili Peppers fame
In any case - any band sponsered by DRM/C is fine by MCB.
Get on over and check them out this saturday night - if you dare.

Rothbury 2009 - Tickets on sale now

MCB's Andrew Bender was on photo pass for last years Rothbury Festival

Tickets for upcoming Rothbury Festival 2009 went on sale today - with a fresh lineup of 66 artists and widespread acceptance unheard of for a second year festival - Rothbury will be the place to be July 2nd - 5th.

Last year MCB gave away a pair of weekend passes to the virgin run of Rothbury and hopes to the do the same later on closer to the event. After the festival we got some feedback from our tickets winners who we discovered used to go on Dead Tour and other circuits ~ they had nothing but positive and encouraging things to say about the "overall groove" of Rothbury.

I think our winners were impressed on a number of levels but mostly by the staff/crew of the festival in regards to the recycling / green efforts.

MCB should be on photo pass again this year and keep you eye out for the free tickets if we can hook them up down the road.

Buy your tickets here

UPCOMING CD RELEASE SHOW: Dirt Road Logic - Lager House - Friday April 3rd

Lansing's DRL (Dirt Road Logic) have a new album on the way and will showcasing the disc at The Lager House in a few weekends with a great lineup to fill the bill....

It's a 7 song EP called, "the Rock-n-Roll EP" recorded at Rustbelt in Royal Oak produced and engineering by Al Sutton.

DRL has had some great shows in Detroit over the last year... including opening for the Supersuckers at the the Magic Bag, opening for a Brandon Calhoon and Robin Horlock at the Magic Bag and playing at the Honky Tonk Detroit show at the Magic Stick.
check some photos here from MCB's Scott Strelecki

We got a few copies of the new release on the way and will tossing up a reminder for you a few days before the show with a giveaway - here are the show details:

Dirt Road Logic
Friday, April 3rd
the Lager House
9pm doors, $5 cover
with Whitey Morgan, the Beggars, and Paul Lamb

"Dirt Road Logic’s boisterous new sophomore record, aptly titled “The Rock’n’Roll EP,” shows the group’s progression from twangy cowboys to riff heavy, outlaw rockers. Whereas the band’s debut CD, “Great Lake Heartache” (2006) featured longer, bittersweet songs and lighter melodies, the new EP is a distorted, amped-up testament to American rock. " -Rich Tupica, Lansing City Pulse

DRL knows how to put on a great live show
and as for their music - it's pretty damned good.

FREE MP3 and maybe just maybe CDs from METRIC

you can download free music from Metric on their myspace page
also we are working on getting a few copies of this disc
will let you know when they come in
(if they come in I should say)
Metric
Fantasies

(Metric Music International)
Release Date: April 14, 2009

When you hand over your money for a concert ticket, what are you really paying for: some idea of the performer you’ve gleaned from gazing longingly at album covers and compulsively clicking YouTube videos, or the performer as they choose to express themselves on that given day? Is the consumer entitled to a certain expectation of the performance — a satisfaction-guaranteed procession of “the hits”— or should the artist interpret the fan’s investment as a vote of confidence, that the fan is willing to follow their every whim? In other words, is the customer really king, relegating the artist to the role of a court jester whose sole purpose is to entertain on demand? Or does the artist, elevated up on the stage and paid for the privilege, still dictate the terms of the contract?

For Metric frontwoman Emily Haines, all these questions came to a head on the evening of March 30, 2008 at the Phoenix Concert Theatre in Toronto. She was all set to perform the somber piano-based ballads that comprised the two releases from her solo venture, The Soft Skeleton: Knives Don’t Have Your Back and What Is Free To a Good Home? — much of which were written following a time of great sadness and personal loss. But having performed those songs so many times since Knives’ September 2006 release, Haines had an epiphany during that Phoenix show — she didn’t want to be sad anymore. And she didn’t want to play those songs. So, about 40 minutes into the show, she stopped “Dr. Blind” mid-verse and said just that: “I don’t want to play these songs anymore.” Instead, she spent the next half hour talking to her fans, encouraging them to join her at the piano on stage and, for the grand finale, pulling a kid from the audience for an impromptu duet on Metric’s “Live It Out.” She was up for anything — except playing those songs. Some disappointed Soft Skeleton fans in the crowd probably thought the show was a trainwreck. But for Haines herself, it was about getting her mind back on track — to the business of completing Metric’s long-awaited fourth album, Fantasies.

“Writing for me comes from a process of trying to piece things together,” says Haines. “The function of music in my life is to help me understand what the hell is happening. This new record was about ending the fragmentation of my existence. Everything in the world right now — all the technology, the way we listen to music or watch films — everything has changed so much in my lifetime. People are allowed to have multiple identities — you’re somebody online, you’re somebody else in public — in multiple dimensions, scattered across the world… I wanted to bring all that into one place, one band, one record… I want to be one person.”

But in order to come together, Metric first had to drift apart. After touring non-stop between 2003’s breakthrough release Old World Underground, Where Are You Now? and 2005’s frenzied follow-up Live It Out, the four members of Metric sought sanctuary in sideline pursuits — Haines threw herself into the Soft Skeleton and took a soul-cleansing sojourn to Argentina; guitarist/co-founder Jimmy Shaw built a neighborhood recording facility, Giant Studio, on Toronto’s burgeoning Ossington Avenue strip with his neighbor Sebastian Grainger; while the Oakland, California-based rhythm section of bassist Joshua Winstead and drummer Joules Scott-Key toured their own garage-rock offshoot, Bang Lime.

“We didn't have a moment where we stopped,” says Haines. “When I look back at the touring, it really was like 300 days a year for those three years [between 2003 and 2006]. After that, I thought if we went straight into recording the next album right away we would end up just writing about being in a band on the road because that's all we had experienced. We had to reconnect with our humanity first."

Says Shaw: “We allowed this record to take a year and a half whereas for Live It Out we didn’t let it take more than 10 weeks. We just allowed it to take its own process, and whatever that process was going to be, it was going to be, and we were relaxed about it. We wrote when we could — we would get together for a month and then take a couple months to do our own personal shit again.”

Formed in Toronto but, at various times, based in Montreal, London, New York and L.A., Metric boasts the sort of history that requires one of those connect-the-dots redlined maps you see in an Indiana Jones movie — and the story of Fantasies is no different. First stop: Bear Creek, located outside Seattle, Washington.

“The four us went out into the woods as a band with no expectations and did whatever we wanted” Haines recalls. “We were coming from London so it was a serious contrast - it felt like we had left civilization and all that mattered was music again. We wrote a lot of songs there including ‘Gimme Sympathy’, ‘Collect Call’... and 'Black Sheep', which isn't on the album 'cause it has a life of its own. When I listen to the finished record, I feel like all its warmth comes from that place in the woods.”

In their recent episode of the Bruce McDonald-produced IFC documentary series, The Rawside Of…, Metric can be seen performing these songs in stripped-down, acoustic versions, and following the taut, barb-wired rock of Live It Out, it would’ve made total sense for the band to pursue a simple, back-to-basics approach further. But as the scene shifted over the course of 2007 and 2008 — back to Toronto and then New York, with Haines’ Argentina retreat in between — so too did the shape of the album. And through rigorous road-testing of the new songs, the mercurial material gradually solidified into a singular sound.

“We toured the new songs a lot,” Shaw says, “because you might play something 30 times live before you start to realize, ‘Why did I get bored every single time I got to the second verse?’ and ‘Why does the ending always suck?’ The songs went through a lot of surgery, and we really feel like we sculpted them and got the best out of them. I felt like I could hear the sound of the whole thing in my head — it was really big and really dreamy. There were images of chasing invisible butterflies and pterodactyls coming out of their shells and flying off prehistoric cliffs. The sound of the record was more based on the idea of soaring pterodactyls than on that of another band, or some ’70s sound.”

Adds Haines, “For me, the major influences on the record were the places we wrote it: Bear Creek, this utopian farmhouse studio, and then our own studio in Toronto, which definitely brought in the electro, dance and rock elements because the city feels so good right now and so many of our musician friends were around. And then for me, being in Buenos Aires, most of the songs I brought to this record came out of being in exile with just a piano and a guitar. And then in the final stages, mixing at Electric Lady in NYC brought everything around to where we first met Josh and Joules.”

But Fantasies is not so much about where Metric has been as where it takes you. While Haines’ missives from inside the VIP room (as cutting as ever on motorik rockers “Gold Guns Girls” and “Front Row”) would suggest the titular Fantasies are of the unattainable (or even undesirable) variety, the album’s gilded surfaces and textural density — psychedelia, electronic and rock — supports Shaw’s assertion that the title is meant to evoke a certain “dream state” quality. And no song better encapsulates the utter surreality of dreaming — that peculiar combination of bliss and terror — than Fantasies’ massive glam-rockin’ closer “Stadium Love,” a song meant to be heard in the building it’s named after, but whose candy-coated “ooh-ooh-ie-ooh” chorus just might distract you from all the crazy shit happening during the verses in between.

Haines explains: “I had just gotten back from Coachella, and I walked into the studio and noticed on the bulletin board that Joules had written ‘spider vs bat,’ I think he had been obsessively watching all these National Geographic animals-fighting-each-other-videos in his hotel room. For me, that phrase triggered an entire narrative that was about a gladiator-style enormo-dome where everything turns in on itself, with every form of aggression on display for spectators: monster trucks ramming into each other, bull fighting, sweaty men wrestling. And then you have these animals completely disconnected from the logic of their natural habitat, so you have a swan pecking the shit out of an elephant and pigs biting the necks out of tigers, and bats attacking spiders. And then in the seats, the spectators are kicking the shit out of each other too. There’s this completely blurred line between spectator and participant, and we’re all trapped in this fucked up Noah’s Ark. The images came to me all at once, and I wrote the lyrics on the spot.”

And so an album that began its life as an acoustic jam session in the bucolic woods outside Seattle ends in a cartoon orgy of bloodshed in some mythical arena that exists in the darkest recesses of Emily Haines’ mind. Each extreme represents a fantasy in their own right: the ideal of hermetic artistic purity versus the spectacle of excess and decadence. Being yourself versus being what they want you to be. Emily Haines stared down these very polarities on her own that night at the Phoenix, but with Fantasies, Metric are now free to define their reality on their own terms. So when, amid the daydream electro of “Gimme Sympathy,” Haines invokes that age-old existential dilemma —

“Who would you rather be: The Beatles or The Rolling Stones?” — it’s only because she already knows the answer: neither.

· Also: Exhibit area will feature products and services from a variety of businesses involved in Michigan movies.

· Cost: $20 at the door

Tickets for the Michigan Film Networking Event are $20 at the door or on http://www.ticketweb.com/.
Those interested in displaying at the event should contact Lew Smith
at (586) 615-3504

The Crofoot is located at 1 South Saginaw Pontiac MI.

FREE CD: Mojo Gurus "Lets Get Lit" - Small's Bar Hamtramck - Thur March 26th

these guys play Small's next week Thursday
free copy of the latest CD to the 4th emailer

The Mojo Gurus are a Tampa Bay area-based roots rock ‘n’ roll band consisting of Kevin Steele on lead vocals and harmonica, Doc Lovett on guitar and vocals, Vinnie Granese on bass and vocals and Mark Busto on drums. The group’s music has been described as “rowdy blooze, rockabilly and honky-tonk…The Mojo Gurus deliver rowdy rock ‘n’ roll with a whole lot of twang and plenty of roadhouse attitude, at once evoking the Stones, Sun Records and the thrill of life in the fast lane.” (Wade Tatangelo, Creative Loafing)

On Let’s Get Lit with…the Mojo Gurus, the band combines healthy doses of straight-ahead rock ‘n’ roll with a southern flavor, hard-core honky tonk, rhythm and blues and even a little surf rock – all played with the energy and swagger of a Saturday night tent revival meeting – for a sound that recalls groups like the Georgia Satellites and Jason and the Scorchers.

The band will support the release of Let’s Get Lit with…the Mojo Gurus with constant touring both in the U.S. and Canada, including two special shows during the upcoming SXSW Music Festival in Austin: the 7th Annual Florida Bandango at the Yard Dog Folk Art Gallery on March 18 from Noon-6PM; and the True North Records/Linus Entertainment Showcase at The Chuggin’ Monkey on March 20 from 5-7 PM.
