Getting ready to go home for a few days after the weekend is over but here are a few events to look out for. Getting ready for professional soccer at the Silverdome when two of Europe’s oldest and most successful professional soccer clubs, AC Milan and Panathinaikos FC, will meet for the first time in North America. At the recent Cypress Hill concert, one of my friends was wondering if the teams will be bringing their best players since he couldn't believe they would. Both teams will have their top players as this match is to prepare them for Europe’s top-level UEFA Champions League competition that begins later in August. A grand total of 17 players between the two teams have played with their national teams at the FIFA World Cup 2010 in South Africa, representing Brazil, France, Ghana, Greece, Holland, Hungary, Italy and the United States. Three members of AC Milan won the World Cup with Italy in 2006, and other notable players will include Ronaldinho, who won the World Cup with Brazil in 2002 and was twice FIFA’s World Player of the Year. I am excited to be at the event after their last attempt at a soccer event stalled when passport issues affected three of teams that were to compete. That is not the case today as the teams practiced on the Silverdome field last night to about 300 fans who were really excited to see the teams last night. For many, this is the chance to see real teams compete (no offense to local college and high school programs) but this is the elite. I ran into one person who was a fan of the Greek team who had traveled to Greece to see them play before so having them come here is a nice change. The game will be televised which excites the Silverdome staff and as of last night, about 20,000 tickets had been sold with hopes of another 10,000 walk ups. The Silverdome looks like it could use a little more cosmetic surgery, esp repaving the parking lot, but overall the venue has held up decently considering it has been unused for a number of years. I would like to see more events happen at this venue esp unique opportunities like this soccer event. There are some fan events prior to doors so if you like soccer or are just curious after watching the World Cup, this is your chance to see what it is all about. See you at the game.
