The Redford Theatre screens The Wizard of Oz

This could be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity on the 70th anniversary of this timeless classic. Since 1939 this movie has thrilled audiences on the big screen with several theatrical runs and is perennially shown on TV. It was released in every commercial media format since the 1970's, but who can say they have seen it on a big screen in an authentic movie house of the era?

Noting that the Wizard of Oz is perennially ranked in the top 5 musicals of all time, the movie selection committee debated whether Wizard of Oz might be over-exposed. Ed Seward, Redford volunteer who was at the meeting commented "Most of us at the meeting suddenly realized that we had seen the movie many times, but rarely, if ever, on the big screen."

With digital mania engulfing our era, how fitting to be able to see this timeless classic on a 35mm film print, in a theatre of the era with live organ overture music as well?

"We are excited to present this film for our metro area family audience", said Seward.

"No one in our family has ever seen this film on the big screen,

even though we wore the tape out years ago."

Longtime patron Mary Dennis Reseigh remembers the first time she saw the film on the big screen: "I couldn't believe the detail and the things I noticed that I had never noticed before. Definitely worth seeing."

"My niece will love seeing Oz!" said Topher Jackson, another regular Redford attendee.

Movies at the Redford are packed full of fun side attractions, including the opening lobby piano and the Theatre Organ overture and intermission music. Theatre goers will be welcomed into the lobby and will be able to follow a yellow brick road into their weekend at Oz. At the candy counter they can sample a free Munchkin from Dunkin Donuts. Movie t-shirts will be sold in the lobby at all shows.

The Redford Theatre is located at the North East corner of Grand River and Lahser Rds. The box office opens and the music begins (lobby piano and theatre organ overture) one hour before show times. From the original theatre organ to the restored splendor of the 1928 interior appearance, the dedicated volunteer staff keeps things authentic by screening real film on vintage quality projection equipment. Our candy counter stocks the largest selection of old and new candy favorites along with delicious popcorn with real butter. Prices are very affordable; there is no candy item over $2, drinks cost up to $1.50 and popcorn costs only $1.50 for a small bag.
