Newly reunited, the Mavericks closed the Miller stage at
Summerfest on Sunday night. Raul Malo
quickly mentioned how great the fans were since it had been a long time since
they played Milwaukee. Unfortunately not
many fans came out for the show. Sure there
was stiff competition from The Eagles, Jimmy Eat World and Loverboy, but come
on, this is the Mavericks! Opening the
set in style they featured the first three songs from the new record, one of
their best in my opinion. “Back in Your Arms
Again”, “Lies”, and “Born to Be Blue” set the pace for an evening of upbeat
sing-a-longs. The rest of the show
proved to be a Mavericks greatest hits parade including “There Goes my Heart”, “O
What a Thrill”, and “Dance the Night Away”.
Only during the encore did they slow things down. Mr. Malo came out solo to sing “Here Comes
the Rain’” followed by the entire band performing “Blue Bayou” because according
to Mr. Malo, they wanted to. This was definitely
the one show to see at Summerfest, mainly because it was the only show I saw at
Summerfest.
