St. Andrew's Hall rocked to the sounds of The Buzzcocks this past Sunday night when the seminal U.K. pop/punk band returned to Detroit after a much too long absence. Their U.S. tour is in support of the release of their upcoming ninth studio album, The Way, scheduled for release in the U.S. on Nov. 18 on 1-2-3-4 Go! Records.
Two stellar local punk bands opened the show – The Ill Itches and Destroy This Place. Both got the crowd ready for what they were waiting for and won over the crowd in the process, according to many people I spoke to. Let's hope that these new fans will check them out at their own shows coming soon to a club near you!
The Buzzcocks kicked their 26-song set into high gear from the start with a trio of their 'classics' - “Boredom” from their debut Spiral Scratch EP and “Fast Cars” and “I Don't Mind” from their first full album, Another Music in a Different Kitchen. They veered away from their old material for a bit to introduce new songs off the new album and these new songs proved to stand up to their old songs ably.
It was then back to their hits for the remainder of the set. Their non-stop energy was fueled by the enthusiastic crowd of new and old fans of all ages. The band returned for a three-song encore fury of “Harmony in My Head” (that turned into a crowd sing-along); “Ever Fallen In Love,” which is probably the most familiar of their hits due to the Fine Young Cannibals cover; and an explosive finale of their infamous song, “Orgasm Addict,” that left the crowd smiling and spent as they exited.

The Way is the follow up to 2006's Flat - Pack Philosophy LP and is the band's ninth studio album since their formation in Manchester in 1976. These 10 tracks penned by the groups long standing core of Pete Shelley and Steve Diggle were recorded this year in London, and were produced by the band and Dave M Allen (best known for his production work with The Cure, Depeche Mode and Neneh Cherry). The album packs the same classic UK pop punk punch they've been known for for nearly four decades.
Currently touring America, the BUZZCOCKS line up of Pete Shelley (vocals / guitars), Steve Diggle (vocals / guitars), Chris Remington (bass) and Danny Farrant (drums)set off on a UK Tour in October to coincide with the new release amongst their remaining U.S live dates listed below.
