Wild At Heart

Wouldn't it be cool if roller derby was actually a college credit class?

Just a random thought before I get into something really bothering me.

Fresh off tours where they opened for the Killers and AC/DC and 2 years removed from their Grammy win for Best Hard Rock Performance, Australian hard rock band Wolfmother is coming to Clutch Cargos. The band does feature a new line-up and a new record (Cosmic Egg) and one lucky person can get a 4 person meet and greet with the band if they are the first to respond to this offer with a email sent to doramu13@yahoo.com. Opening for Wolfmother are the Heartless Bastards (a wonderful garage rock band from Cleveland who share a label with the Black Keys) and Thenewno2 (George harrison's son of Dhani is a member of this band). Good luck!!

I went down to the Magic Stick this past week with a buddy to check out Bayside and the Bouncing Souls and I got talking to one of my bouncer friends at the Cafe and who should be sitting at the bar but none other than Danny Glover. The word is that Danny Glover is in Detroit filming a movie entitled "Highland Park" about a teacher who wins the lottery and decides to use the money to reopen Highland Park's McGregor Library. The real McGregor Library closed in 2002 because the city of Highland Park did not have the funds to keep it open and it is rumored that some of the money made from the film is expected to go toward reopening the library. A personal favorite overlooked gem by Mr Glover to me has always been "Predator 2" and he will be playing the President in the new film 2012 which will be in theatres soon.

I was giving some tickets for the Detroit Pistons so I checked out the game and got my Rip Hamilton bobblehead. It was kind of an odd game since neither Prince or Rip played and Philadelphia doesn't really have a star player. I had never been to a NBA before where I was struggling to figure out who was on the court. While they won, I am hard-pressed to think that this team as it stands will actually do any damage if they make the playoffs this year. Please bring my Shock back!!

Saw the new Clooney film "The Men Who Stare At Goats" where Ann Arbor reporter Bob Wilton (Ewan McGregor) stumbles onto the story of a lifetime when he meets special forces operator Lyn Cassady (George Clooney) in Kuwait while he is trying to cover the war in Kuwait. It turns out that Lyn is part of a secret US Army unit (the First Earth Battallion) that was founded by Bill Django (Jeff Bridges) in the 1970's and made use of various New Age movements to train the ultimate force of psychic spies in the arts of remote viewing, walking through walls and intuition. The film also has a rival for Lyn in Larry Hooper (Kevin Spacey) who is kind of like Darth Vader to Lyn's Luke and Jeff's Ben Kenobi as he experiments with the dark side of the powers they are trying to develop which ends with Lyn killing a goat just by staring at it. Star Wars parallels aside, the film spends an equal amount of time showing the history of the First Earth Battallion and Bob following Lyn on a mission to find his lost commander Bill out in the desert of Kuwait. The film doesn't deliver all the goods I would hope for due to an ending to the mission which seems a bit anti-climatic but it does manage to be entertaining more often than not. It almost reminds me of a Spike Jonze film (like Being John Malkovich or Adaptation) which gives the film a few bonus points for myself. My grade is a B.

Trekkers should be excited that the newest "Star Trek" film will be coming out on DVD soon. Better yet, The Blockbuster in Royal Oak located on the corner of Woodward and Catalpa will be hosting a DVD release party on Monday, Nov 6th between 9PM-midnight where one can beam down to so you can be among the first to rent or purchase the film. As an added bonus, one can mingle with the members of Starfleet: The International Star Trek Fan Association, Inc Region 13 who will be there to collect "earth clothing" donations for the Salvation Army. Other activities include a 10PM screening of “Star Trek”, a Star Trek Trivia Contest and free stuff. If you wear a costume to the event, you will get a free rental card and Star Trek comic book while supplies last. Live Long and Prosper!

For music lovers, their is not a lot on my concerts to check out list including blanks on Tuesday (11/10), Sunday (11/15) and Monday (11/16). On Wednesday (11/11), there is the ever fun Fiery Furnaces w/Dent May and his Beautiful Ukulele @ Magic Bag or you can go goth crazy with Skinny Puppy @ Royal Oak Music Theatre (make sure to bring a respirator if they are still using their smoke machines to recreate the FX from "The Mist"). Thursday (11/12) has the Heartless Bastards and Thenewno2 opening for Wolfmother @ Clutch Cargos.

Friday (11/13) has the main man himself, Bruce Springsteen and his E Street Band @ Palace Of Auburn Hills, hard rockers Trivium @ Clutch Cargos or the Celtic rock band Enter The Haggis @ the Ark. Saturday (11/14) sees Saving Abel w/Red and Pop Evil @ St Andrews Hall, Motown greats the Four Tops @ Motorcity Casino, and EMO girls can rejoice with Cobra Starship and the Maine opening for Boys Like Girls @ Clutch Cargos.

On a sadder note, drummer Gerhardt "Jerry" Fuchs of !!! and Maserati passed away early in the morning on November 8, 2009 as he accidentally fell to his death down an elevator shaft. Founder of the San Diego Comic-Con International and comic strip letterer Sheldon "Shel" Dorf, who is best known for his 12 year run on the Steve Canyon comic strip, passed away earlier this week. Lastly, multitalented producer and bassist Mark Smith, who played for the Waterboys and the jazz funk band Kokomo, also passed away.

That seems to be it for this week so have a good week and enjoy this nice little warm spell we are having.
