Wild At Heart
This past week I went Toronto Fan Expo which is by far one of my favorite events and it just got bigger. By adding a sports sections which brought in athletes like Hulk Hogan, Bobby Orr and Joe Montana, they expanded to use both the north and south buildings. Added to this was some big names such as David Hasselhoff and Linda Hamilton along with favorites like Stan Lee, George Takei and three cast members of the Walking Dead. Not too mention comic book greats Todd McFarlane and Neal Adams and numerous artist, anime talents, etc this is one of the best conventions on this coast plus Toronto is a great city to be in and easy to get around. Nearby are numerous restaurants and within a few blocks on the convention center, you got some great theatre, restaurants, museums as well as Buskerfest, the Taiwanese Festival and the Canadian National Expo (with cool bands like the Proclaimers and Dragonette this year).
It is also fun to see the latest video games, movie props and other fun stuff like the Lego Hobbit Shire and part of the sets of the newest incarnation of the Evil Dead Musical coming back to Toronto's Diesel Theatre (there will be a version in Detroit this October but nothing beats the original).
The most fun is seeing all the costumes that people put together. The sheer talent some of the fans have make this a wonderful time. Here are some of my favorites:
It was also fun seeing the great stuff by the Doctor Who Society and the Star Wars Fan Clubs who do a lot of good charity work at the convention and offer a lot of photo ops.
There are a few more pictures on my Photobucket account so make sure to check them out. I was also glad to get the chance to meet one of my favorite Directors, Joe "Gremlins" Dante and just pick up a bunch of cool freebies as well as some Dr Who 1st issue stamps from the UK. This has become an annual event for me and should be for any serious science fiction fan. This year they also through together a panel of the cast of the new series Orphan Black which was awesome. If you cannot make it to San Diego, this is the best convention going with high profile guests you just don't see anywhere else except San Diego or NYC.
If music is more your thing, check out these cool upcoming shows.
