UPCOMING: 2012 Rockin' on the Riverfront Schedule

Rockin' on the Riverfront lineup makes waves among music fans

A summer series of six free classic rock concerts set to begin July 13 in Detroit

The 2012 General Motors Rockin' on the Riverfront summer concert series will transform GM Riverfront Plaza with a highly anticipated lineup of classic rock all-stars sure to capture crowds of music fans again this season.

Beginning July 13 and spanning six consecutive Friday evenings, Rockin' on the Riverfront offers more than free concerts. Located in the heart of the city, between the GM Renaissance Center and Detroit River, the event has become a summer destination for dining and entertainment in Detroit.

In partnership with Detroit's Classic Rock Station 94.7 WCSX-FM and the new Soft Rock 105.1 FM, Rockin' on the Riverfront will amaze rock audiences with Friday night shows from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. July 13 through August 17.

Leading the line-up this year will be a stellar double bill featuring none other than John Waite and Detroit's own Sponge. Waite is known for such enduring hits as Missing You and When I See You Smile. Sponge made a name for itself nationally with such hits as Molly and Wax Ecstatic. See both bands July 13.

The full schedule of bands performing at this year's Rockin' on the Riverfront summer concert series will include:

July 13: Sponge and John Waite (Molly; Missing You)

July 20: Starship (We Built This City, Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now, Sara)

July 27: Ace Frehley (former KISS guitarist)

August 3: Lou Gramm of Foreigner (Cold as Ice, Hot Blooded)

August 10: The Sweet & The Tubes (Ballroom Blitz; She's a Beauty)

August 17: Mark Farner of Grand Funk Railroad and Marshall Crenshaw (We're An American Band; Someday, Someway)

WCSX 94.7 FM will sponsor concerts on July 13 and 27 and August 10. WCSX 94.7 FM and WMGC Soft Rock 105.1 FM will co-sponsor the concerts hosted on July 20, August 3 and 17.

"Summer doesn't officially start in downtown Detroit until the Rockin' on The Riverfront stage is set," said Doug Podell, afternoon personality at WCSX. "Where else can we count on seeing some of the most talented and enduring performers in rock n' roll, for free, and set against the iconic GM Renaissance Center on one side and the Detroit River on the other. You really have to experience Rockin' on the Riverfront to experience summer in the Motor City."

Admission to the concerts is always free and no advance tickets are necessary. Viewing space is offered on a first-come, first-served basis. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own lawn chairs and blankets. In addition, boaters on the Detroit River are welcome to anchor near the riverfront and enjoy the shows from the water.

Andiamo Detroit Riverfront will provide refreshment and food concessions at several locations across the plaza. Outside food, beverages or coolers will not be permitted. Andiamo Detroit Riverfront and Joe Muer Seafood will accept dinner reservations before and after the concert and both restaurants offer outdoor patios overlooking the Detroit River and Rockin' on the Riverfront stage.

Convenient parking is available for $5 per vehicle, starting at 5:00 p.m., at the GM surface lot at the intersection of St. Antoine and Atwater streets, adjacent to the GM Renaissance Center.

The Detroit Marriott Renaissance Center is offering two viewing packages. The Andiamo Riverfront package includes a four-course dinner and overnight accommodations. The Joe Muer Seafood package includes a four course dinner, overnight accommodations and breakfast at forty-two degrees north. For reservations specify the package and call 1-800-352-0831 or visit detroitmarriott.com.
