NORTHVILLE ART HOUSE
"Dimorphism" A Solo Exhibition by Terry Lee Dill
September 6 September 28, 2013
Opening Reception is September 6, 2013 (First Friday)
Artist's Talk at 8 p.m.
Northville Art House, 215 W. Cady Street
Can a building be autobiographical? Yes, in the hands of artist-architect Terry Lee Dill. For the past 20 years, Mr. Dill has conceptualized fantastical buildings as metaphors of his daily life. His drawings -- elaborate creations of black ink and gold leaf, shot through with imagery of nature, religion and desire -- are constructions entirely for the mind to explore and enjoy. There are hints of Dr. Seuss, M.C. Escher and Erich Mendelsohn in this work. As a result, "Dimorphism" will appeal to adults and children alike!
Terry Lee Dill worked after high school in heavy construction on one of the first nuclear power plants in the United States, as the assistant to the head of structural engineering. He went back to school and received first an associate of arts degree in architectural engineering, then a B.F.A. in painting and sculpture from Drake University with the help of the first art scholarship awarded by that school. He earned both an M.A. and an M.F.A. in sculpture from the University of Iowa before he moved to New York City, where he won three New York Foundation on the Arts Fellowships (the first person to win such Fellowships in both sculpture and architecture). He holds an M.A. in architecture from Cranbrook Academy of Art, has taught at Detroit's College for Creative Studies, and has lectured on his work at numerous universities, including Stanford, Yale and Harvard. He continues to work on commissioned art projects, developing new architectural concepts including the design and fabrication of one of the smallest houses in Los Angeles.
This Exhibit is organized by Jeff Cancelosi.
The show will open in the Art House's upper gallery with a reception, 6-9 p.m., Friday, September 6. There will be an artist's talk at 8 p.m. the night of the reception.
