The video was shot with a Phantom Flex High Speed camera, which films at 1080p with just over 2,500 frames per second and allowed for the extreme high quality capture of the super slow motion scenes. The camera was chosen because director Jeff Ray wanted the video to have "a new look."

Three different Texas locations served as the backdrop for "The Chills" video. The band's performance was shot at the Triple Crown in San Marcos, a tiny little hole in the wall bar that happens to be the site of one of Blue October's very first performances. The Blue October fans that comprised the audience for this performance were invited to the video shoot via Facebook. Many of the exterior shots were actually shot on the property of Justin's house - while an actual party was going on inside complete with DJ, dancing and an unending flow of margaritas. The bonfire scenes and fireworks were shot on the beach in Galveston, which was necessitated because of the extreme drought and resulting burn ban throughout most of central Texas.

The basic concepts explored in "The Chills" video are those moments in a relationship, or life in general, when you become so frustrated or so overwhelmed with a person or situation that you just want to punch a hole in the wall...but you don't. However, in the video, no one suppresses that emotion. No one bottles up their feelings. If someone feels angry, they let that anger out. It's about reverting back to your primal instincts and Blue October is the catalyst for all of this. They wanted to make a video that touched people and gave them goosebumps....The Chills!
According to Blue October lead singer/guitarist Justin Furstenfeld, "The video was probably the most positive video I've ever made. I'm glad that such a heartbreaking song, when written, is showcased with such freedom and spirit."
