Mellow out your Sundays with new Detroit Institute of Arts' Sunday Music Bar

Acoustic world music, coffee, drinks and light fare offered in relaxed setting

The Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA) offers a new way to enjoy Sunday afternoons. The Sunday Music Bar launches Sept. 11 and features live acoustic music from many cultures and genres in the relaxed atmosphere of the DIA's elegant Kresge Court. Performances are at 1 and 3 p.m. and are free with museum admission.

On the second Sunday of each month, Ford Motor Company Fund is sponsoring free DIA admission, so visitors can attend this first Sunday Music Bar free.

In addition to the concerts, people can purchase Starbucks coffee, cappuccino, espresso, mixed drinks and wine. Bagels, muffins, deli sandwiches, salads and fresh fruit cups will also be available.

The DIA's popular Brunch with Bach, which had been scheduled one Sunday a month, continues, but not on a monthly basis.
It will now be offered around the most popular dates for attendance: Dec. 11 and 18, 2011; and Feb. 12, April 8, May 13 and June 13, 2012.

Sunday Music Bar September lineup
Sept. 11 (Ford Free Sunday): The Bowman-Kelly-Deleury Trio

Sept. 18: Xochitl Garcia and Angelina Pashmakova
Mexican clarinetist Xochitl Garcia and Bulgarian pianist Angelina Pashmakova play music by Claude Debussy, Mario Lavista, Camille Saint-Saens and Arturo Marquez. This is the first in a series of concerts by musicians from Mexico. Sponsored by the Consulate of Mexico.

Sept. 25: Carl Cafagna & the North Star Saxophone Quartet
Enjoy the world premier of New Orleans Saxophone Suite by Carl Cafagna, a work commemorating the sixth anniversary of Hurricane Katrina.
