Fresh off of her latest 10-track release, "Idler Wheel" (full title: "The Idler Wheel is wiser than the Driver of the Screw, and Whipping Cords will serve you more than Ropes will ever do"), Fiona Apple took the stage at the Fillmore last weekend.
Standing at the barricades with super fans who ventured from as far as New York and Ohio to see Fiona (they saw her in their hometowns too...) it was my first time seeing Fiona up-close in what was a more intimate but less personal experience. Shifting between piano and standing up at the mic, the show opener set the tone as she belted out classic favorite Fast as you Can. Long time fans were satisfied with her fairly equal track selection from both 1996s Tidal and the Idler Wheel, as well as some fan favorites and a cover encore.
Opening her show and leading on guitar was Blake Mills. This seasoned singer/songwriter/musician has had his debut album "Break Mirrors" out for a couple years, and has generated his own following from a more grassroots distribution of his music, sharing with friends and encouraging that they do the same. Mills did the majority of the talking at the show, including the band introduction, while Fiona let the music do her talking with few words in between.
