A Toast to Hazen S. Pingree

Ending the year off with a post to toast Hazen S. Pingree who was the Mayor of Detroit and Governor of Michigan back in the late 1800's.
From wiki:
"Pingree was elected mayor of Detroit in 1889 on a platform of exposing and ending corruption in city paving contracts, sewer contracts, and the school board. He soon turned to fighting privately owned utility monopolies. He challenged the electric and gas monopolies through municipally-owned competitors. His largest struggle, however, was with Tom L. Johnson, president of the Detroit City Railways, over lowering streetcar fares to three-cents. Pingree again attempted to create a competing municipally-owned company, but was barred from creating a railway by the Michigan Constitution.

During the depression of 1893, Pingree expanded the public welfare programs, initiated public works for the unemployed, built new schools, parks, and public baths. He gained national recognition through his "potato patch plan," a systematic use of vacant city land for gardens which would produce food for the city's poor. He was also an advocate of economist Henry George's single tax.

In 1896, Pingree was elected Governor of Michigan. After taking office on January 1, 1897, he intended to also fill the last year of his term as mayor of Detroit, which would have lasted until elections in November 1897. However, his right to hold the two offices simultaneously was contested, and after the Michigan Supreme Court ruled against him, Pingree resigned as mayor (see Catlin p. 628). During his four years in office, the direct election of U.S. senators was promoted; an eight-hour workday was endorsed; a regulated income tax was supported; and railroad taxation was advocated."

Hermann's Bakery - Downtown Royal Oak

Hermann's Bakery
317 S Main St
South of 3rd
Next time your in downtown Royal Oak make sure to step back in time by stepping into one of the finest bakeries around - Hermann's Bakery!
This family owned bakery is old school and they still make everything the old fashion way like back in the day. I spoke to Richard Hermann who filled me on a bit of the history behind this Royal Oak staple.
Richard's father George Hermann started working in the bakery owned by Gus Dondero in 1922
He then became an operating partner in 1929 and bought the business outright in 1942.
The bakery has been owned and operated by The Hermann's every since.
Richard also mentioned that his father help design a number of the neighborhood layouts in Royal Oak including the Pingree neighborhood which is just northeast of downtown RO.
Hermann's offers a rotating menu of 60 different breads - 30 various rolls - and dozens of other breakfast and baked goods that blow away anything you are going to get at the big name coffee and pastry shops around town.
Plus the staff at Hermann's are nicer than the pies they make fresh everyday single day.
With all the new restaurants and shops on the strip now Hermann's is easy to miss.
Stop in and pick up some bread, cookies or a pie - and tell em MOTORCITYBLOG sent you over to say hello!

Johnny Powers - The Painted Lady - Mon Dec 31st

"The only singer, so far as we know, ever signed to both Sun and Motown Records, the two most historic independent, legendary record companies in the world. What's most remarkable is that Johnny Powers is no second-generation revivalist: He was wrapping his rich, early voice around similarity unfettered melodies back in 1954 - 15 year's before Sha Na Na trivialized the genre and 25 years before it was billed by the Stray Cats.
