TICKET GIVEAWAY! Detroit Bureau of Sound: HYBRID I on 4/3

Yuri Popowycz (violin/electronics) and Brandon LePage (flute)
@ the Ecumenical Theological Seminary (fka First Presbyterian)

The first HYBRID concert brings together classical music for the flute and contemporary improvisation for the violin. Flutist, Brandon LePage, takes us back in time with Classical and Baroque music from the 17th and 18th centuries. Beyond his work with the Detroit Symphony (and numerous other orchestras in the region), Brandon is a deft soloist who flaunts a mystifying tone with his flute. Joining him on the program is Yuri Popowycz, the violinist from the prestigious Oberlin Conservatory. Yuri is a skilled performer of modern music, and is a thoughtful improvisor and composer. He fuses the violin with some creative manipulation of electronics, and will also provide some unusual music by 20th century composers. Classical flute and contemporary violin meet during the lifetime of John Cage, with his "Duo".

Moogfest 2016: I'll be there, will you?

Moogfest as defined is a four-day festival that explores new technologies pushing the boundaries of creative expression to take place in Durham, North Carolina from May 19-22. This festival is so impressive that I'll be making the journey and reporting back to you all the wonderful things that take place. But, I'm also hoping some of my Detroit buds will join me on what promises to be an amazing 4 days and nights of synth wonders and adventures.

Here's a few more of my picks for what's in store at Moogfest:

Evening headliners will participate in a range of daytime programs including master classes that take audiences deep inside the artist’s creative process, workshops, conversations, film screenings, and improvisational performances. Highlights include:

  • Musical experimentalist Laurie Anderson will be interviewed by Jana Hunter of Lower Dens.
  • Odesza will take apart one of the their songs, and piece by piece, tell the story of how it was made in a live recording of Song Exploder, the hit podcast hosted by Hirishikesh Hirway.
  • Julia Holter and Empress Of  will participate in live episodes of the No Effects podcast hosted by Jesse Cohen of Tanlines.
Film Fest
  • "The Three Grace(s) triptych" Screening and live score by ADULT. Local electronic duo ADULT will be presenting a unique presentation of original film and live soundtrack performance. The Three Grace(s) triptych chronicles the two year affair of artists/musicians Nicola Kuperus & Adam Lee Miller.
  • "It Follows" Screening and Q&A with composer Disasterpeace.  The acclaimed horror film “It Follows” took the 2014 Cannes Film Festival by storm and went on to exceed all expectations at the box office in 2015. Following the screening, Disasterpeace, the composer of the film, will discuss the background and inner workings of the score.
And this is in addition to all the other artists and performers that will be at Moogfest. Check out there website for all the details, and if you're planning on going, drop me a message at MPAD Media and let me know. Maybe we'll meet up and get all "mooged" out together.

“talented young musical emissary who expertly blends the folkloric sound of his homeland with the improvising aesthetic of jazz” (Peter Hum, Ottawa Citizen)

Israeli born New York based jazz pianist and composer Guy Mintus creates performances that have “the entire hall listening with held breath” (Barka Fabiánová, Full Moon Zine). At 24, Guy has won awards from ASCAP, Downbeat Magazine, BMI, the American Composers Orchestra, and the America-Israel Cultural Foundation. His performance credits include the Kennedy Center, Jazz at Lincoln Center, the Apollo Theater, Symphony Space, Red Sea Jazz Festival, and the Israel Festival. With a focus on music as a gateway to cross-cultural understanding, Guy has collaborated with master musicians from Turkey, Greece, Iran, Morocco, Azerbaijan, India, Cuba, and Mali and has participated in multi-disciplinary works with artists in the visual, dance, spoken word, and theater worlds.

Guy’s intimate, boundary-crossing music weaves textures and colors from across cultures. With influences ranging from Stride piano and the Greek Rebetiko blues, to the Turkish Makam, Indian Ragas and Bach-styled counterpoint, a Mintus performance pairs his originals alongside works based on traditional music from the Mediterranean, along with select pearls from the American Songbook.
