THE D'S TOP PRODUCERS BATTLE FOR RESPECT AND RED BULL'S BIG TUNE

WHO:

Battle-ready producers, beatsmiths, and sound-architects from the Detroit area who have original music, talent and desire to take their passion to the next level will compete for the Red Bull Big Tune title.

Special guest performance by rapper Guilty Simpson (Stones Throw) who is said to be the late great producer J Dilla’s favorite emcee. Producer Mr. Porter, aka Kon Artis of D 12 fame, will also hit the Red Bull Big Tune stage

WHAT:

A beatsmith battle royale in the Motor City will be bouncing to fresh beats when the premiere music producer battle, known as Red Bull Big Tune, hits Detroit this month. Detroit marks the fourth stop in a series of eight regional beat competitions designed to find the most talented U.S. producer with the next big tune. Twelve beatsmiths will be called to battle at each regional qualifier. Other regional battles will be hosted in Philadelphia, Houston, Chicago, Seattle, Washington D.C., and Los Angeles. The top 2 producers from each city will square off in December 2008, at the Red Bull Big Tune National Championships in New York City.

The winner of the finals receives custom studio equipment and an opportunity to collaborate with a recording artist of his/her choice in the prestigious Red Bull Studios/ Santa Monica. Last year’s Red Bull Big Tune winner opted to work with Young Buck. Other artists available for collaboration were Redman and Talib Kweli.

I was fortunate enough to be at Rustbelt Studios this past Thursday (7/17/08) and meet Don Was, David Was and the musicians who make up Sudan United for Peace. The Sudanese artists joined native Detroiter and Grammy Award winner Don Was, another Concert of Colors artist, to collaborate on a song calling for peace in Sudan.

I was struck by how powerful the session was. I knew it was an honor to meet Don Was, David Was and the most talented musicians from Sudan, I didn't realize how moving it would be. At a time when the President of Sudan is being charged with war crimes by The Hague I was being sung to about peace and one love. We have so much to learn for one another.

Sudan United for Peace performs from 6-7:30 p.m. Saturday, July 19, on the Chrysler Main Stage at Orchestra Hall. I urge you to come down to the Concert of Colors and find some peace.

The recording session was conceived and planned by Concert of Colors founder Ismael Ahmed; Ralph Valdez, curator of cultural programming at the Arab American National Museum, a festival presenter; Don Was; and Dawn Elder, who is managing the Sudanese tour. It is being underwritten in part by the Arab American National Museum in Dearborn. All are available for interview, as is a spokesman for the Sudanese performers.

Don Was hosts a Detroit Super Session from 7:15-8:30 p.m. Sunday, July 20, also on the Chrysler Main Stage at Orchestra Hall, featuring David Was, Luis Resto, Randy Jacobs, Terry Thunder, Mitch Ryder, the MC5's Wayne Kramer, John Sinclair and members of Detroit bands including the Dirtbombs, Black Bottom Collective, Sisters Lucas, Lola Morales and Detroit Cobras.

After last years kick ass debut PAF 2008 is going to be even better than last year!

MCB will be exhibiting and covering the fest with our photographers and video...here are a few detail on where to find info and how to get involved....

Get the word out that the The People's Arts Festival has announced a new deadline for submissions to the festival: August 1st, 2008

They are STILL taking applications.

The PAF will be held on Saturday, September 13, 2008 from 11:00 a.m. - midnight at the Russell Industrial Center at 1600 Clay Avenue off I-75. Admission to the festival is free to the public, and other than a $25 community fee that covers good things like security, publicity, etc., artists get to keep their sales profits- no commissions or other fees are involved! THE PEOPLE'S ARTS FESTIVAL NEW SUBMISSION DEADLINES

The People's Arts Festival (PAF), sponsored by The Russell Center for Creative Arts (RCCAdetroit.org), has announced a new deadline for submissions to the festival, August 1st, 2008, and is still taking applications for participants.

All interested participants should respond by e-mail to the specific addresses listed below. The PAF will be held on Saturday, September 13, 2008 from 11:00 a.m. - midnight at the Russell Industrial Center at 1600 Clay Avenue off I-75.

Admission to the festival is free to the public. Now in it's second year, the Annual People's Arts Festival (PAF) is the largest assembly of artists, performance artists, musicians and filmmakers in the city of Detroit. Last year, the free-to-artists festival drew over 4,000 people who visited more than 200 exhibitors and musicians to celebrate the inaugural launch of the festival. This year Festival planners expect that crowd to double - once again securing its claim to being the largest arts festival in the City of Detroit

The People's Arts Festival is unique in several ways. A music merchandising area will once again be set up for all participating bands with all sales being retained by the performers. Exhibit space, public lighting, sound systems, stages and security are all being provided at no cost to participants by the Russell Center for Creative Arts, a not-for-profit group established this year to administer the PAF and other artistic projects at the Russell Industrial Center (RICdetroit.org)"We hope to accomplish several things through our sponsorship of the Festival," said Dennis Kefallinos, the owner of Russell Industrial Center and an RCCA board member. "Once again, it's part of our way of saying, 'Thank You' to the artists and other creative people who have chosen to locate their studios and businesses with us. Last year's festival brought the Russell family even more closely together and has resulted in the launch of dozens of creative projects - some involving individual tenants, groups of tenants or the community as a whole.Supporting the festival is also a way of giving something back to Detroit and proving that there's still a lot of positive energy in this city.

Finally, it's another opportunity for us to showcase this unbelievable campus. We have seven buildings here and over 2.2 million square feet, so there's still plenty of room for people who are interested in joining our community.""To me the most exciting thing about this festival is still that it has been planned by artists, it's essentially free to artists and that the guidelines we established … have been honored by The Russell management," said Mark Arminski, a globally-renowned painter and poster maker and one of the three members of the Festival's Artist's Committee. "The whole feel of the festival last year was dramatic. … this year promises to be even more exciting. We've also been fortunate once again to secure the sponsorship of Real Detroit magazine which last year did a spectacular job of moving the festival forward. And, you really can't say enough about the artists and other members of the Russell Family who have generously contributed so much time and talent to the planning and ongoing organization of this event."

The only charge to artists is a $25 community participation fee which covers incidental costs associated with security, general area cleanup, etc. No commissions will be taken; artists keep all sales profits. Applications and information on the festival may be found at http://www.rccadetroit.org/

The Jazz Cafe Discovery Series Finals this weekend

The Jazz Cafe Discovery Series is presenting two nights of performances by the six finalists in this year's competition.

First prize is $5,000, and a gig at the Detroit International Jazz Festival, Labor Day weekend. Second prize is a gig that the Jazz on the River Festival, August 2-3, in Trenton.

The Jazz Cafe Discovery Series, an educational outreach project of the Music Hall Center for the Performing Arts, is a weekly series of live performances of new and emerging Jazz talent hosted and co-produced by Jazz radio personality, Judy Adams.

Ted Nagy is the Director of the series, who has sought out and presented over 100 groups since the series debut in January '07. Adams gives the bands additional exposure by broadcasting each week's performances on WVMV 98.7 at 11pm.

The History of Noir
Owned and operated by Keith Howarth since December of 1981, Noir Leather has had a front row seat and a hand in the birth of this urban-chic suburb.
Beginning as a wholesale leather company, Noir expanded in 1983 to a storefront in downtown Royal Oak at 117 W. Third St. After three years of having to close Noir at 5 p.m. due to a lack of foot traffic, Howarth collaborated with a handful of local businesses to entice people to visit downtown later in the evening.

The night was set - Every Wednesday restaurants and stores would stay open until 11p.m. The campaign was a massive successand has grown with the city over the past 20 years, becoming infamous in the metro Detroit area.

Over Noir’s 25 years in business, Howarth has had his fair share of opposition from citizens, city council, the Royal Oak Police Department and animal rights activists. Howarth contributes his longevity as landmark business, not only Royal Oak but also in the metro Detroit area, to his drive to succeed over opposition.

“I’ve watched [Royal Oak] prosper from a ghost town to the little Chicago it is now and Noir has been a part of that journey. Noir shocked a lot of people at first (because of the scene we are a part of), but we haven’t changed, we haven’t gone anywhere and we haven’t let any road bumps stop us from doing what we love to do,” said Howarth.

Wild At Heart

It has been a star-studded week so far so me as I have had the opportunity
to interview some cool people for my show. I started off the week with Rainn
Wilson on a round table discussion talking about his upcoming film “The
Rocker”. Starting off, he was showing his inner geek by wearing a Star Trek
shirt from the animated series.

I am not sure if he was joking, but he did ask me if I would come on “The
Office” and play his cousin. This could work since we are about the same age
and are both inner geeks and proud of it. What do you people think?
Talking about “The Office”, he was tightlipped about the upcoming season but
mentioned that the cast has pictures of their real families on their desks.
He is also proud of his first leading role with “The Rocker” which will now
be out in August. Visit the WXOU at the Concert Of Colors on Sat and we will
have some passes for the movie next Monday at AMC Southfield. I highly
recommend it and have a review on my website at

One of his highlights was meeting ex-Beatle drummer Pete Best and related how he thought it was funny that Pete came in one day for a shoot which got cut from the film. No
respect after all these years. Pete expressed to Rainn how lucky he feels to
have his health and kids and likes that he still receives nice checks from
the early Beatle recording which will keep him set for the rest of his life.
Besides the industry, Rainn does have a website www.rrwilsonart.com which he shares with his father and they sell fine art. He asks to talk to them about art but no autograph requests please. Rainn also does a lot of work supporting education through the Mona Foundation
which he feels is very important though he might have some questions for his
music teacher who got him to take up bassoon for 5 years, though his musical
background (including clarinet and xylophone) did come in handy for his role
in “the Rocker”.

Remember, the Concert Of Colors is this weekend starting Thursday with Buffy
Saint-Marie and continuing through Sunday with such artists as Rickie Lee
Jones, Mavis Staples and Don Was.

I had Don on my show this morning and we talked about the show Sunday which will feature a number of local musicians such as Mitch Ryder, John Sinclair along with members of the Dirtbombs, Black Merde and the Detroit Cobras. Basically it will be a jam session with
every artist doing one song on a rotational basis. This should be a lot of
fun and should not be missed. We talked about 1 hour and 15 minutes which
made him a little late for a recording session for Amnesty International
with the Sudan United For Peace musicians which should be stellar. We
covered his extensive career (producing albums for Bonnie Raitt, Roy
Orbison, Bob Dylan, Rolling Stones, Al Green, B-52’s, etc) where we learned
we share the idea that if you just make a great album, people will
respond to it. Recording artists just need to keep their own inner voice
true to the music and they won’t get off target. He said, he has trouble
producing hit songs (Love Shack being a true surprise due to it being
radically different from anything on the market) but making a good album is
possible as long as the artist has a true vision.

Despite being a big star, he admits he has had moments of being starstruck, esp the first time he
worked with Johnny Cash. It was a great interview, so for those who heard it, I thank you for listening. PS - WXOU will have a table at the event on Sat and Sun from 1-8PM so make sure to stop by.

Lastly, “Weird Al” Yankovic called in for a conversation which we found out
his new album comes out Tuesday (no particular Tuesday, but some Tuesday),
that Harvey the Wonder Hamster doesn’t return his calls anymore and that he
will performing a good selection of older hits along with material from
Straight Out Of Linwood at his show at Meadowbrook tomorrow (for those not
at the Concert of Colors or Warped Tour). I was always a huge “Weird Al” fan
growing up and it was great to be able to do this interview.

I also had a good time at the Missy Higgins show at the Crofoot. Missy has a
beautifully powerful voice, and while I didn’t get the opportunity to
interview her, I was happy to have seen her performance and wish her luck
breaking into the US market since she is a superstar in Australia. I did
however get the chance to talk to Chandra of the Watson Twins and will play
that brief interview on Monday, 21st at 9AM on wxou.org so you can hear
about how they got their start and if they worried about being over shadowed
by Jenny Lewis on their album together.

MCB's Amy Palomar will be attending the recording session today with Don Was and Sudan United over at Rustbelt Studios in Royal Oak.

They are recording a song for the anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights for Amnesty International and Amy will there shooting her usual top notch photos of this important event that "unofficially" kicks off The Concert of Colors 2008.
