Wild At Heart

I am still recovering from my busy weekend so pardon myself for turning in my weekly Monday blog on Tuesday.

I had a great musical weekend, starting off with Neil Diamond on Thursday who is proving that he is a great crowd pleasing entertainer. He played a few songs off his new album (Home Before Dark) which is his first #1 album which is amazing considering his career of 37 hit songs since 1966. I was excited to hear some of my favorite songs (Cherry Cherry, I Thank the Lord for the Night Time, Brother Love's Traveling Salvation Show, Kentucky Woman) and the fact that he didn’t play some of my least favorite songs (sorry Heartlight). It is also nice seeing that most of his band has been with him since the 70’s.

I changed gears on Friday for the H2O/Rancid show which rocked Clutch Cargos. Local punk band the Red Shift started the night off in fine form. I spent most of the night talking to some punk fans from Cleveland who drove all the way here to see the show and they were telling me that the punk scene in Cleveland sucks nowadays and they end up going to places like Chicago or Buffalo to see any of the cool punk bands (makes me learn to appreciate the scene here a little more).

I went to a couple of oldies show after that with Hippifest and the Golden Boys. I mainly went to Hippifest to see Badfinger (which only played their 4 hits before leaving the stage) and legendary Cream guitarist Jack Bruce (who actually put on a wonderful set of Cream favorites like I Feel Free). It is a fun show to people watch and wonder which people are dressing up and which ones really still dress that way. The Golden Boys was a show to see three legendary performers before they pass away. I still don’t get the appeal of Fabian, but Frankie Avalon put on an enjoyable set (even playing his song from the musical Grease). It was Bobby Rydell who really tore things up. Rydell is a performer who put up a number of hit songs like “Volare” and “Forget Him” (19 in all) and still has the vocal ability to pull it off. The guys also have a great banter between them which just makes one nostalgic.

Last night I went to see We Are Scientists who are wonderful guys. I got a very scattered interview in their normal, not sure what we can serious, style. That interview will air on WXOU 88.3FM (live streaming on http://www.wxou.org/) on Thursday morning between 8-10AM.

Before the show, I was wishing a had a video camera because I could of got some cool youtube worthy video of a couple of Detroit bums fighting. The cops showed up and broke it up. However, after they left they went at it again. At one point one of them went into a store. The other one followed and immediately got thrown out about five feet. It was better than an episode of cops!

This week I am looking forward to Rod Stewart/Bryan Adams at Pine Knob (I just can’t say DTE) and Idina Menzel at the GEM on Thursday (theatre star who played the wicked witch in Wicked).

The Concours d’Elegance went over well on Sunday. The weather held up well and I met a lot of nice people. As soon as I figure out how to download the pictures from my new digital camera to the computer, I will put some of them up on this blog site and my homepage, www.myspace.com/wildatheart_13

The show this year had a ton of unbelievable cars of which I really enjoyed the Mitchell concept cars, the Aerocar and a gorgeous yellow Duesenberg racing car. Fingers crossed that the pictures came out OK.EXTREME and KING’s X @ Emerald Theatre on Aug 8th.

The Mitten Movie Project is a monthly film night dedicated to screening independent films the first Tuesday of every month.

Free parking is available in the museum parking lot off Kirby Street between Woodward Avenue and Cass Avenue (push the white button on the parking lot callbox to be let in the lot).

"Join us behind the scenes for an exclusive look inside seven historic venues that comprise one of America’s most important collections of early 20th Century theaters. As Preservation Wayne’s biggest walking tour of the year, the annual Theater District tour showcases the amazing architecture of downtown theaters in Detroit’s premier entertainment district.

Now in its 20th year, the tour has helped promote the entertainment district and has seen six theaters, including the Fox and the Century, restored since it began. Led by theater history buffs who enjoy sharing their knowledge of the buildings, business and anecdotes, the tour illuminates the importance of preserving our historic architecture. While the Madison, the Adams and the United Artists are no longer accessible to the public, the remnants of the magnificent Michigan Theatre are still visible above the 3-story parking deck where scenes from movies like "8 Mile" and "The Island" were filmed.

Tour groups are limited in size and depart every half hour from 9:00 AM to 11:30 AM. Registration and tours begin in the lobby of the State Theater on Woodward Avenue, one block south of the Fox. Parking is available at the Fox Garage, located just north of the Fox Theater, on Montcalm, directly west of Hockeytown Café. Please arrive at least 15 minutes before your scheduled departure time.

Tickets: $40 per person; Payment by cash, check, and MasterCard or Visa is accepted. Tickets include a boxed lunch at the Detroit Opera House. Reservations are required.

DJ Spooky’s Rebirth of a Nation Performance at the Detroit Institute of Arts
Presentation Examines Mythmaking and Propaganda in Film

Conceptual artist Paul D. Miller fuses film and music into one explosive mix that will cause viewers to question racial stereotypes and the power of media to promote them during a performance at the Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA) on Thursday, Aug. 14. Miller, better known as DJ Spooky that Subliminal Kid, will put a 21st century spin on D.W. Griffith’s infamous 1915 silent film classic The Birth of a Nation when he presents his multimedia remix Rebirth of a Nation at 8 p.m. in the museum’s Auditorium.

Miller will draw on his celebrated skills as a writer, musician, club deejay, and social critic to create a sensory-rich performance that examines the uses of propaganda in the film. Griffith’s landmark film was hailed for its use of cinematic editing techniques and reviled for the anti-black sentiments it spewed and its distorted account of the Reconstruction-era South. In Griffith’s version of the post-Civil War South, white southerners are victimized by carpetbagger opportunists, corrupt politicians, and lustful, newly freed blacks. The film’s main character organizes a secret vigilante group—the Ku Klux Klan—to reclaim the white privilege surrendered with the loss of the Civil War.

But in combining the roles of “deejay and director,” Miller uses Rebirth of a Nation to examine the paradox of Griffith’s backward political stance versus the groundbreaking technical expertise he brought to the film. During his high-energy performance, Miller will cut, paste, and weave video sequences in real time and project those images onto three screens to create a new experience for novice viewers as well as those familiar with Griffith’s film. The accompanying soundtrack is an eclectic mix of Miller’s electronic compositions including a score written by Miller and recorded by the acclaimed string ensemble Kronos Quartet.

“Combining film, music, and other visual effects with the lightest of touches, Miller creates an unexpected mélange that addresses deep-seated attitudes in US society in a manner that is entrancing and disturbing in just about equal measure,” said Graham W.J. Beal, DIA director

Miller’s media art has appeared in museums around the world, including the Whitney Biennial, the Venice Bienniale of Architecture, and the Tate Modern in London. His written work has been featured in The Village Voice, The Source, and Artforum among other publications. His most recent book, Sound Unbound, is an anthology of writings on electronic music and digital media. Miller, who has a discography of over 100 titles, has collaborated with a wide variety of musicians, artists, and composers in almost every category from hip-hop, jazz, rock, electronic, and reggae to classical and conceptual.

A moderated discussion between the audience and the artist will follow his performance. The dialogue will be led by Dr. Robin R. Means Coleman, associate professor of communication studies at the University of Michigan and author of Say It Loud! African American Audiences, Media and Identity.

Finn Fest - Wixom Finn Camp - ALL WEEKEND

Since 1925, the Detroit Finnish Co-Operative Summer Camp Association (or Finn Camp) has been a place for recreation, social gatherings, and personal growth.

"FINN CAMP". The Detroit Finnish Cooperative Summer Camp Association was founded in 1925 by Finns living in the Detroit area. This ethnic force of identity prominent in Finns inspired the founders to find an area for recreation, social gatherings and personal growth. After a concerted and lengthy search, property in Commerce Township (now the City of Wixom) was selected. Their choice in 1925 is now the good fortune of today's membership and of future generations.

With co-operation of these charter members and their families and with high enthusiasm, the arduous work began to clear the land build the sauna, summer kitchen and dance hall. Here they had their drama performances, athletic games, gymnastic festivals and picnics. Today these traditions are still followed by the second, third, fourth and fifth generations. Such as the annual Finn Fest celebration in August since 1976.

The only requirement for membership are that a person be of good morale character, of Finnish descent.

The Association is still founded on co-operative principles where all members are equally responsible for association operations, each contributing their own talent and skills.

Beach facilities include the artesian fed lake, a sauna and two docks 50 meters apart for lap swimming, one dock with a 6 meter diving tower and the other dock for fishing and row boat launch.

For over forty years, we have maintained an excellent children's recreation program which includes extensive swimming lessons, following the five week program a week is devoted to the children which highlights the swim meet, track meet and their own stage production.

Our small children enjoy playing in the warm shallow waters of scenic Loon Lake which is also available for sailing, fishing and paddle boating.

We also have a soft ball field - home of the Finn Camp sponsored team in the local active league and our own annual tournament held in August during Finn Fest. Other athletic facilities include a horse shoe court.

During the summer months; the out door restaurant, the Ravintola; serves ethnic foods, including mojakka (beef stew), pasties, and pulla as well as American food. This is a pleasant place for members to visit over a leisurely Sunday breakfast.

The dance hall on the hill "Kentta" hosts mid-summer celebration Juhannus, annual children production and many dances throughout the summer. Here one is apt to see anything from the traditional raatikko, polka or schottish or the music of a waltz, country or rock ending our season.

In the Clubroom we have a full bar and a Harvest Dinner, little Christmas "Pikkuu Jouluu", St. Urho's Day, Dinner Theatre and Laskianinen Paiva highlight the winter calendar. The Clubroom provides a lending library for the membership featuring best sellers, varied ethnic publications, children's and craft books. (this is awesome)

Summers can be enjoyed in the one room cabins in "Camp Country." The rustic intimacy is shared by many members who "rough" it from April to October, creating a unique sense of kinship.
