While the needs of every animal the Michigan Humane Society cares for are different, on average it costs MHS $120 to change the life of one animal in need.




Animals like Eddie, who was found severely malnourished and abandoned in Detroit. He was recued by MHS, entered the foster care program for treatment and recuperation and eventually was placed up for adoption where he found a loving Grosse Pointe family.

Join hundreds of animal lovers at the 2010 Mutt March to help the more than 100,000 animals the Michigan Humane Society cares for each year. Gather your family, friends and canine companions, collect donations and enjoy a scenic walk, jog or stroll of up to five miles. If your dog will be walking with you, be sure to bring his current vaccination records.

The Mutt March tradition began in 1989 in memory of a well-respected volunteer and board member, Laura Lee Greer, and has raised thousands of dollars to support the Michigan Humane Society’s many life-saving programs and services.

Rock super group TERRIBLE THINGS featuring Fred Mascherino (Taking Back Sunday), Josh Eppard (Coheed & Cambria), and Andy Jackson (Hot Rod Circuit) will be performing at iLounge in Pontiac on Tuesday May 18th.

Their full-length debut is due out late summer on Universal Motown.

The album's concept is about the arson that ravaged Fred's hometown of Coatesville, PA. MySpace debuted their first single "Revolution" on Monday, which goes to Modern Rock radio at the end of June.

Surreal. Just surreal.

Have you ever had that experience where you're watching a cartoon and you know that voice... you just KNOW that voice, and you're trying to match it to a face...? This was the opposite universe version of that. This was the voice of a cartoon coming out of the body of a real person. Two real people, actually. Two real people, standing right in front of me, and acting very silly.

I mean that in the best possible way, of course.

If you're not already familiar with Aqua Teen Hunger Force, it would probably take longer to describe the show than it's running time -- after all, it's one of the only 11-minute shows on TV. The live show was like old-school Vaudeville mixed with teenaged stoner humor (more than a little appropriate, I suspect, for the all-ages show).


St Andrew's was set up with folding chairs filling the main floor (when was the last time you saw anything at St Andrew's, let alone something with chairs?) and the stage itself was relatively sparse -- the props came later -- with a large projection screen at center. This is where they shared with us the paradigm-shattering spectacle that was...

AQUA TEEN HUNGER FORCE: One Hundred.

I was going to rub it in that I saw it and you didn't, and be all coy about how I wouldn't spoil it, but... here, go watch. Funny shit.

And I mean, that's weird even for them.

After being treated to some excerpts from the reel of Dana Snyder: Professional Actor (he can act the HELL out of a denim jacket, it's true), things got awesome and bizarre. Yes, there were puppets, including a mini Master Shake, which was so goddamned adorable, I could curl up to sleep with it every night. Full disclosure: I think Master Shake is one of the best television characters ever created. And you know that crazy voice of his? That's pretty much Dana Snyder unaltered. To say nothing of the raw (dairy) animal magnetism. Rrrow.

Some of the other highlights of the gig included America's Next Top Meatwad, where several audience members came up on the mic to do their best rendition of everyone's favorite blob of beef. This did not include this lovely lady, who was apparently just there for the cosplay.


Sizzlin', I know. There was also the educational Cooking with Granny segment, where the Squidbillies matriarch Granny Cuyler (with Dana Snyder up her bum, naturally) did her best to completely molest some young cutie from the audience. What I did not learn about cooking, I learned about the liberties one can take with a felt squid at the end of one's arm. I should never leave home without one.

Aside from that, I'd call Carl's Regional Beef my favorite moment in the show. Ignoring the rift in the space-time continuum created by the voice of Carl Brutananadilewski AND the puppet of Carl AND the cartoon of Carl AND the live-action Carl (just sitting there eating wings; scariest thing ever) all sharing the same stage, Carl really laid some Motorcity-style truth down. Shout out.


"Look I know that this is the murder capital of the world, and I think that's liberal media bias. Cuz I been here for four hours and I ain't been murdered yet! And all you people, except for that one guy in the back with the red shirt, he looks kinda murdered. I notice there's a few empty seats, so I hope they at least bought a ticket before they did get murdered. But I will say this, Motorcity, you got some problems. And I, Carl, got some solutions. First off, Detroit Rock City, I would restore law and order in your urban areas -- Robocop ain't cuttin it. I think his human side is giving him, like, problems or something, with emotions. That's why you gotta go back to the ED209. At least with ED209, I know a lot of innocent people will get killed, but sometimes in order to make an omelette, you gotta shoot some eggs in the chest."

As further proof of their dedication to their craft, after the show, Dave and Dana (and yes, the real-live Carl) answered questions, shook hands, signed people and clothing, ate Meatwad cake... and if I hadn't been so generously watered by the beautiful redhead behind the bar, I would have definitely stuck around to get a Master Shake stylee voice mail greeting. Sometimes the cost of having too much fun is getting shot in the chest, I guess.

WAYFARER ROOTS & BLUEGRASS FESTIVAL ADDS CORNMEAL TO 2010 LINEUP

Detroit, MI – The Majestic Theater Center and Grand Circus Media are excited to announce the addition of Cornmeal to the inaugural WAYFARER ROOTS & BLUEGRASS FESTIVAL.

The event takes place on Friday, June 18^th on two stages within the Magic Stick. Wayfarer Roots & Bluegrass Festival will feature a rapid-fire evening of the Midwest’s most talented and buzz-worthy roots, bluegrass, and folk acts. The festival aims to unite one of the strongest roots music scenes in the country for a single night celebrating Detroit’s musical diversity.

Performing Live:

Greensky Bluegrass

Since winning the Telluride Bluegrass Festival Band Contest in 2006, Wayfarer headliner Greensky Bluegrass have experienced unprecedented national recognition as a leading force in acoustic roots music. Combining manic chops and masterful storytelling, the band has performed on average 170 shows annually, including a set at the inaugural Rothbury Music Festival in 2008. Greensky has performed with the likes of Tony Rice and Peter Rowan, Sam Bush, Yonder Mountain String Band and Railroad Earth.

Cornmeal

Formed over 10 years ago, Cornmeal has grown from humble beginnings into a nationally recognized live music institution. 10 years together is no simple task these days, especially when the last five have seen the band spending over half the year on the road. Heavily influenced by American roots and folk music, Cornmeal blends lightning fast tempos and impeccable harmonies into an unrivaled live performance that continues to expand upon the five-piece acoustic-electric groups’ vast musical repertoire. While steeped in the tradition of the past, Cornmeal continues to forge their own path, pushing the boundaries of bluegrass, Americana and folk for a whole new generation of music lovers. With a rapidly growing fan base and ever-evolving sound, Cornmeal challenges the recipe of the bluegrass sound and live performance.

The Ragbirds

Joining Greensky Bluegrass is a lineup full of Michigan’s heavy hitters. The Ragbirds utilize an arsenal of instruments from around the world, including violin, mandolin, banjo, accordion, kalimba and various hand drums. The Ann Arbor-based project has garnered significant buzz, performing over 200 shows across the country in 2009 in their eco-friendly waste vegetable oil powered diesel bus.

Steppin’ In It

Hailing from Lansing, Michigan -the heart of Factory Town, USA- Steppin’ In It pound out their own brand of roots combining old-time country, swing and blues, achieving the seemingly impossible task of making the most traditional sounds contemporary.

Rounding out the Wayfarer lineup are Detroit folk mainstays

Billy Brandt Acoustic Mission Band, Jill Jack, Rootstand, Catfish Mafia, Black Jake & the Carnies, The Northern Skies, and Misty Lynn & Big Beautiful.

Hello everyone! I'm going to just start off that I am tired. I am working full time at a temp job, going to concerts and other events and watching a ton of movies and TV series to the point where I have been getting very little sleep.. I did something today I almost never do and that was take a small nap this afternoon between things to do. This means that I don't really want to write my blog today but it is Monday and that is the schedule I want to keep in hopes that I cover things you really want to know about. I have had lots of people come up to me saying they enjoy my blog and that is why I am here despite just wanting to go home and go to bed. Thanks for listening and lets get start with shows that I recommend for the week though most are local bands.

Now that is out of the way, I feel a bit better as I type though I don't have much to say. Looking forward to seeing a press screening of Iron Man 2 tomorrow. Just got a cell phone for work and I'm not in love with it. Most plans are more than my typical phone bill with my hard line. In 2 days, I have already missed 2 important calls, dropped my phone and miscalled a person at 12:30AM in the morning blaring Glitch Mob into what I hope was an answering machine and not someone I woke up who needed to get up early. I also went to a movie screening and ended up holding onto the damn phone wondering if it would ring. The same thing at Porcupine Tree, which rocked, where I spent the entire show at the back where I could get reception in case an agent called and close enough to the door so I could rush into the rainy smoking area in case I needed to hear whoever might call me. I would have rather been closer to the front as both Big Elf and Porcupine Tree rocked the Fillmore that night. I now know why I don't own a cell phone. I get this weird paranoia that I might miss an important call which I shouldn't because I now have a phone on me. With just the hard line, I never worry about missing calls and now I am going crazy just thinking it might happen. Of course, my boss was almost yelling at me when I told him I had to buy a cell phone for my job and was wondering how serious I was. Of course, there are the three times I called him for work only to go to his answering machine and told the next day he never got my email because his phone was acting up. That's upper management. I tell him I'm charging my phone and get a berserk reaction. He doesn't answer three voice messages and all in fine in the world. No wonder cell phones are stress inducers. When this assignment is over, I don't think I will keep a cell phone. They are too expensive and annoying. I also find myself increasingly wanted to grab cell phones out of people's hand at concerts and smashing them. You are at a fucking concert. Enjoy the goddamn music and stop texting the whole show. At Glitch Mob, which also got my glow stick mojo working, a guy sat in someone's seat and when asked to get out of said seat responded with the outburst "Can't you see I'm fucking texting here" in a very threatening voice which made me want to reach down, grab him by the throat and smash his head into the metal railing separating us. I can't stand rude people to begin with, but using a cell phone as an excuse to be rude and being overly dramatic afterwards is grounds for termination with extreme prejudice (as you can tell, I just watched the Sarah Connor Chronicles). Leave your phones at home! I remember when I was young just going to a show and enjoying the music and maybe a game of pool and some light conversation. Occasionally getting the nice one night stand which would last half a day. Today it's playing tetris or texting what a wonderful time you are having while barely looking up as you type or taking pictures of the band which are more of a blur so 6 months down the road you are wondering what the picture really is. And forget working security for a show where the band asks no pictures and you have to walk around telling the same people over and over again to put there phones away but they feel entitled to keep taking pictures until you want to throw them over the balcony. The damn pictures won't come out good anyway in most cases. Once again, just watch the show. Anyway, enough ranting for now and more on my cell phone experience in later weeks.

Not much else to say so it's time for the band of the week: This week I am bringing in a singer from Iceland who put out my favorite single last year. Her name is Emilíana Torrini and the some was "Jungle Drum" which is also a very colorful video. Her biggest US claim to fame would be her performing "Gollum's Song" during the end credits of "The Lord Of The Rings: Two Towers". At the age of 7, she joined a choir as a soprano, until she went to opera school at the age of 15. In 1994, she became well-known in Iceland after winning the song competition of junior colleges in Iceland. She co-wrote Kylie Minogue's "Slow" and "Someday" and contributed vocals to songs on Thievery Corporation's 2002 record and on Paul Oakenfield's song "Hold Your Hand". While not quite as unique as her fellow native Bjork, her music has a similar quality. While "Jungle Drum" gives a nice beat rounded by some nice scatting, most of her music has a breathless quality that can mellow you out or get you feet a tapping. I hope she can break into the states because I would love to hear her voice live. Here are a couple of tunes that go to her lighter side but she can also provide some darker lyrics when you least expect them.

PHOTOS: Deadbolt with Amino Acids & Blood, Bricks and Booze @ Lager House

Saturday Night at the Lager House was banging as the legendary Deadbolt helped ring in the new era of outdoor smoking in Michigan bars. Opening were Blood, Bricks, N' Booze, who whipped the packed house into a frenzy with their brand of bluesy punk. Amino Acids played an amazing set with more theremin than vocals, and plenty of partying both on and off stage. California veterans Deadbolt were outstanding, delivering a classy surf rock set that put everyone in a good mood to end the evening.

Cowboy Messiah - Pure - Ultra-Mega - Super Dot - Paychecks Lounge, Hamtramck - 05/01/10

The Venue:

Paychecks Lounge is one of the best actual venues in Hamtramck. I stress the word "actual" because a lot of places in Hamtramck claim to be venues, but in reality turn out to be shitty venues with crappy sound systems. But Paychecks has more than ample sound reinforcement, a big spacious stage, and the best lighting system in Hamtramck (great for photos!).

Not my favorite beer selection, because they had no IPA's, or Dark Lager's. Newcastle was their darkest brew. So sometimes a Budwieser is in order, which was $3.00

And as my tradition in reporting, the bathrooms were fine. No scary situations or uniquely dangerous / uncomfortable locations. Typical stickers, and clever slogans, and rebuttals to slogans on the wall.

As far as Hamtramck venues go, Paycheck's is a 9 out of 10. One point deduction for beer selection.

The Performance:

There were five bands, but I got there late and only saw four. I sincerely apologize to Luscious Delicious for not seeing their set, but they certainly sound delicious...and luscious.

The second band of the night, Cowboy Messiah, was the clear front-runner in terms of musical variety and versatility. Their name might lead you to believe they could sound country-ish, but scarcely did I associate their sound with country music. Perhaps southern-rock would be more fitting if I had to narrow their genre, but that soon became defunct when they intertwined reprises of Marvin Gaye's "Let's Get It On", Marshall Tuckers "Can't You See", and the classic doo-wop song "Earth Angel" by The Penguins. Great energy and confident musical prowess.

The third band, Pure, might best be summed up by three t-shirts that were worn by the band members. In some strange, metaphysical way it makes sense to describe the band as Kiss, mixed with Jimi Hendrix, and sprinkled with The Goonies (the movie). If that is too "far-out" for you, imagine Black Sabbath inspired riffs, with Alice & Chains vocal styling, and Joe Satriani guitar leads. Bordering on headbanging rock, yet still melodic dynamics, Pure was the hardest rocking band of the night.

The fourth band, Ultra-Mega, had recently lost their vocalist. Their previous project, with vocals, was called Hoss Burley, but with the remaining band members staying strong, they rocked out a mostly instrumental set. They seemed very well rehearsed, and had exceptional percussion. Maybe that's what happens when the singer disappears...the drums become more vibrant. Perhaps another Black Sabbath, Detroit-rock inspired sound, but once they get their vocals together I'm sure that will increase their overall feel.

The fifth and final band, supposedly on the verge of stardom in the mid-1990's, Super Dot, reminded me of something...the mid-90's. The distinct sound of Ska, while not my personal favorite style of music, certainly has a happy energy that makes me think of California beaches, swing-dancing, and the Macarena. At one point during their peak they consisted of 11 members, but now dwindled to six guys still going strong. They were super crisp, well-experienced, and energetic musicians. The flow of their set was the best of the night, mixed with trumpet, trombone, saxophone solos, great vocals, and bouncy ska energy.

Bloodletting’s Twentieth Anniversary!

First Live Dates in 7 Years!

Forget about Twilight and True Blood, Concrete Blonde’s landmark album Bloodletting is turning 20 and the real vampires are coming to have a drink and walk around a city near you! Concrete Blonde will tour the US for the first time in 7 years with a set list celebrating the album and their career. Released in 1990, Bloodletting spawned the top 20 hit “Joey,” as well as Concrete Blonde classics “Tomorrow, Wendy”, “Caroline”, and “The Sky Is a Poisonous Garden”. It quickly became their most successful album.

Lead singer Johnette Napolitano explains how the tour came about: “People started emailing me and calling me up and telling me that it was the twentieth anniversary of Bloodletting, which had “Joey” on it and was a big hit for us all over the world. My dad passed away recently and was a big fan of the band and it occurred to me that a twentieth anniversary’s only going to happen once and that my dad would have said that it’s a good idea and that we should do it. So we knocked it together and it looks like it’s going to be fun, doing twenty-year-old vampire songs should be fun.”

Concrete Blonde formed in Los Angeles in 1982 and became one of the most beloved alternative bands in the US. Characterized by Napolitano’s inimitable voice, brutally honest lyrics, and the band’s fearless sound that ranges from punk to ballads to Latin music, Concrete Blonde are true originals whose influence can be felt far and wide. Beyond Bloodletting, the band is responsible for classic alternative songs including “Still in Hollywood”, “God is a Bullet”, and their iconic cover of Leonard Cohen’s “Everybody Knows”.
