    I recommend seeing this play. I thoroughly enjoyed the dark comedic moments in this tragic play about a homeless puerto rican woman who convinces two other homeless dwellers to steal her boyfriend's dead body out of a prison yard.  The intro of this piece is a monologue by a policeman who is concise and dramatic in his exasperation of the homeless and city life in general. He also instructs the audience to turn off their cellphones before his monologue begins which is funny and sets up the intimacy and the bent humor of this production. Magnetic performances, superb sound affects and stage design complete the vibe. The setting of Tompkins Square Park in the early 1990s is full on. Frank Sinatra's "Strangers in The Night" becomes the ironic title song.
    The tension between Anita, the lead role, and Flea, another homeless New Yorker is dynamic and witty. Anita is at her funniest when she is obsessing about shoulder pads, cashmere and curses and when she attempts to hex Flea with a  boy doll, sticks and pins. Antigone in New York is playing until January 12th in The Elizabeth Theatre which is above the Park Bar in the Fox town district in Detroit. The last two shows are on the 11th and on the 12th at 7:30pm. To the right of the theatre is a bar which can craft a cocktail for you.

Wild At Heart


How come it is always when you have all the free time in the world that you can find nothing to do. I have had two weeks with nothing to do but go to work and all I have found to do is my usual movie night and sitting home watching my TV shows on Hulu (of which I am all caught up with now).

While I sit at home wondering when the next concert will be, at least I can recommend a few shows this week.

Show Preview: Nervo at V Nightclub, Jan. 12 2013

The folks at MGM Grand Detroit are starting 2013 out right with a big show this Saturday at their posh V Nightclub with Electronic/DJ sensation Nervo. Nervo are sisters Mim and Liv that hail from Australia and began their noise-dance trek in 2011. In the short span of 2 years they have played several festivals, opened for big names like Nicki Minaj and Briteny Spears and performed countless DJ dates at clubs around the world. Nervo have also been busy as songwriters having written songs for artists like Ke$ha, Kylie Minogue, the Pussycat Dolls and more. Recently they stepped up as singers on their UK single “We’re All No One” which feature both DJs Steve Aoki and Afrojack. I had the opportunity to see Nervo last year at Elektricity and they lit up a Sunday night with their energy and pulsing rhythms.

Doors are at 10pm and V resident DJ CAPTN20 will be opening the night.

THE DETROIT HISTORICAL SOCIETY’S FILM SERIES RESUMES

Returning after a seven-month break due to renovations, the Detroit Historical Society resumes its monthly film series with “Grown in Detroit,” showing Saturday and Sunday, January 12 & 13 at 1 p.m. at the Detroit Historical Museum. Each screening is free to the public.

            This film, produced by Dutch filmmakers Mascha and Manfred Poppenk, focuses on urban gardening efforts managed by a public school of 300 pregnant and/or parenting teenagers. The Catherine Ferguson Academy in Detroit is one of only three schools in the U.S. for pregnant and parenting teens. Under the inspiring leadership of their principal, Ms. G. Andrews, the students bring their babies to school everyday and work hard to get their diploma.

One of the more unique courses offered at the Ferguson Academy is urban farming. The city and its many vacant lots allow schools and residents to have farms where houses, shops and factories once stood. Taking care of animals, growing produce and earning money helps shape the Ferguson students into strong and independent women. The run time for the film is 60 minutes. 

The Detroit Historical Museum, located at 5401 Woodward Ave. (NW corner of Kirby) in Midtown Detroit, is open to the public Tuesday through Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is free for all, all the time. Show Preview/Interview with Charlie Scene of Hollywood Undead

A&M/Octone recording artists Hollywood Undead will return to the road early next year in support of their new album Notes From The Underground. Doors open at 5 p.m. First bout starts at 6 p.m., second bout starts at 8.

Tickets are $18 at the door. Up to two children 12 and under are admitted free with each adult admission.

Detroit Derby Girls: Bouts 2 and 3 of the 2012-13 Season

On December 8, 2012, the Detroit Derby Girls hosted a double-header bout. It was the Detroit Pistoffs versus the D-Funk Allstars, followed by the Pistolwhippers versus the Devil's Night Dames. If my use of jargon gets confusing, this page will help you brush up on the rules.

The first jam of the night was an explosive play. Cookie Rumble scored 20 points for the Pistoffs. Roxanna Hardplace put D-Funk on the board by scoring 13 points in the 2nd jam. Mean Streak would then score 15 points for the Pistoffs in the 3rd. Kraken Whips gave the Pistoffs 15 points in the 6th jam, Ally Sin Shoverland gave D-Funk 18 points in the 10th, followed by 14 points by Cookie Rumble, and then 15 points by Meryl Slaughterburgh for D-Funk. Back and forth with all of these big plays, but at the end of all that the Pistoffs were ahead 74-55. The rest of that half was finished out with smaller scoring additions, and ended with the Pistoffs still ahead 104-77.

Cookie Rumble would also start off the second half for the Pistoffs, and scored 9 points, followed by Princess Die scoring them another 11 in the 2nd. The Pistoffs were widening their lead, and Mean Streak get in on that also, scoring 10 in the 6th, and 15 in the 9th, to make it 159-87.

D-Funk wouldn't make a big play in the 2nd half until Meryl scored 14 unanswered points in the 12th. Despite this, the Pistoffs kept increasing their lead. One last big play for the D-Funk happened in the 20th and final jam of the bout, when Roxanna Hardplace scored 21 points. This massive burst of performance was too late though, as the Pistoffs won after leading all night, 201-139.

Performance Network came up with a low key New Years Eve option for  those who wanted to celebrate in style but soak in some culture as well. A reading from a production called Striking 12 which combines an orchestra, singing, dancing, and candid and humorous dialogue. The production was inspired by Hans Christian Anderson's book The Little Match Girl. The play, music and lyrics are by Brendan Milburn, Rachel Sheinkin, and Valerie Vigoda. In Striking 12 new years eve, office politics, awkward relationships, pop culture, corny television advertisements, loneliness, seasonal affective disorder, and door to door salespeople are referenced.  A song about Hans Christian Anderson's life Screwed Up People Make Great Art was a winner. Other popular artists with troubled lives were mentioned as a well as a zinger about Justin Bieber being completely well adjusted. The main character decides to work late at the office, is grossed out by his new years eve options, and goes home and reads The Little Match Girl. Anderson's tale moves him and he makes an unlikely friend with a girl selling door to door light bulbs. Striking 12 is clever and culturally dynamic.

150th Anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation - Sunday, January 6 at the Detroit Historical Museum

The Detroit Historical Society's Black Historic Sites Committee is celebrating the 150^th anniversary of the first reading of the Emancipation Proclamation in Michigan with a very special afternoon of events on Sunday, January 6 at the Detroit Historical Museum.  This free program begins at 1 p.m. with refreshments, readings of the Emancipation Proclamation by local ministers, poetry readings, storytellers and tours of the new Doorway to Freedom: Detroit and the Underground Railroad exhibition.

 

The event honors the January 6, 1863 reading of the Emancipation Proclamation at Historic Second Baptist Church in Detroit. The Black Historic Sites Committee, along with the Baptist Ministerial Alliance and Broadside Press, have partnered together to bring attendees an enlightening look at the history of the Emancipation Proclamation.

           

The program commences with a historical overview and presentation, followed by readings of poetic works created by pioneering African-American writers Dudley Randall, Paul Laurence Dunbar, Albert M. Ward and Robert Hayden. The poems will be read by Dr. Gloria House, Professor of Humanities and African American Studies at the University of Michigan, Dearborn, Associate Professor Emerita in the Interdisciplinary Studies Department of Wayne State University and Broadside Press board member; Albert M. Ward, Broadside Press board member and poet; Lori Allan; and Bill Harris, poet and Professor of English at Wayne State University.

 

 Civil rights activist and educator John Hardy will present the story of abolitionist and clergyman Rev. Absalom Jones, an excerpt from one of his sermons, and his civil rights petition to Congress in regard to the 1793 Fugitive Slave Act. Rev. Dr. Kevin M. Turman of Historic Second Baptist Church will conclude the program, leading local ministers in a series of readings of Abraham Lincoln's January 1, 1863 Emancipation Proclamation.

3rd Annual "KT for Free" at Grasshopper Underground, Ferndale Thurs. Jan 10th

Kenneth Thomas is back for his annual, just for fun, "KT for Free" No Cover post-NYE recovery event.

Every year KT likes to kick off his New Year with a intimate local event aimed towards the close friends and supporters in the Detroit scene.  In 2013 Kenneth Thomas returns to Grasshopper Underground in Ferndale. 

Hailing out of the Detroit, the birthplace of Techno, KT stands out with his emotional and melodic sound. Although often categorized in the trance vain, his ability to blend and explore all dance music genres are what makes his live performances such a unique experience. Music has always been a spiritual place for Kenneth and because the depth of dance music goes well beyond the conscious level, there's an underlying exploration of emotion in every set and track.

Show Review with Pics! - Skrillex/Boys Noize the Palace 12/31/2012

There were countless things going on around town on New Year's Eve, but none seemed to have the hype or excitement surrounding them like that of the Skrillex/Boys Noize show at the Auburn Hills Palace. So when I arrived to the show I expected a jam-packed, wild experience but instead this was a show that gradually grew from a slow simmer to heady boil. Before the major acts most of the crowd milled about the Palace with several heading into the local DJ area where there was an added dance club feel.

The real excitement of the night began when Boys Noize took the stage around 10pm. Boys Noize is the name for German electronic producer/DJ Alexander Ridha who did his set from the top of a gigantic chrome skull. His set was an innovative electro-house mix of quick beats, hip hop, even Nirvana's "Smell's Like Teenage Spirit" sneaked its way into the end of his eclectic set. 

Just before midnight as the crowd spilled back into the main arena a countdown started as Bob Marley played in the background. When midnight arrived confetti cannons were shot and the crowd went into a frenzy as Skrillex sprang into a blistering set. He played his set from what looked like a "Star Wars" inspired X-wing fighter. It was an unbelievable sight and I'm still envious he gets to perform from such a cool stage set. Fire shot up from the sides, beams of light came out from the stage like laser beams and Skrillex was non-stop moving with fist pumps and waves to the crowd. His set ended around 1:15am which was just a brief interlude into the next party of the night, the Hard Party, where he played a set with Boys Noize as their new Dog Blood project.

Obviously a big part of the night was the crowd itself, which by midnight numbered around 5,000 fans. Here's a slideshow of the party revelers:

Third Eye Blind @ The Fillmore Review and Photos

            December 29, 2012, Third Eye Blind took the stage at The Fillmore Detroit. It was there first time back at The Fillmore since May 2009. The concert sold out and the energy in the venue was intense. You could tell that everyone was very excited to see Third Eye Blind. The energy was up for the first opening act. It was local band Inoke Errati, that won 89X battle of the bands. You could tell that they were super excited to be opening up for one of the biggest bands of the 90s. They played a few songs and the crowed reacted well to them. Then the second act came on. A solo artist, Michael Bernard Fitzgerald. He came on stage and immediately informed the crowed he was sick. Even though he was battling a cold he sang very well. The only thing the crowd did not react well to was the fact that he talked for a while in-between songs. You could tell that the crowed stopped listening and just wanted him off the stage. Every once in a while through his thirty minute set list you would hear boo’s coming from the crowd.

            Once Michael Bernard Fitzgerald got off the stage, everyone was pumped for Third Eye Blind to take the stage. As soon, as the lights went down the crowd went crazy. They played about four songs before the lead singer Stephan Jenkins said anything to the crowed. Based on his performance you could tell he was feeling under the weather. Stephan said because all of us were so excited to see them he knew he could perform even if he was sick.

            Stephan then went on and played some acoustic songs. He asked the crowed what they wanted to hear and the first song he heard someone shout out he played it. It was Deep inside of you. When Stephan did his acoustic set you could really feel the emotion of a song and see how much he love’s what he dose. Stephan then went on to play Slow Motion, my favorite song by Third Eye Blind. It might be bias but he killed the song, sick or not.

            The rest of the show was amazing. Stephan could not hit the famous high in Semi-Charmed kind of life, but he still pulled it off. The crowed loved each other and everyone was having a great time. The band also gave us a preview of there new album, they are planning to release sometime this year. The song was called Shipboard Cook. It felt that the band was getting back to there old roots. I was nervous to hear a new song, but it was really good and I cannot wait to hear the rest of the album. This time the band seems to be really excited about the release of there fifth and final album.

Wild At Heart


Despite our falling over the fiscal cliff thanks to the idiots on Capitol Hill, it has been a pretty decent week. Why is it that politicians ask us daily to make the tough choices and hard sacrifices but frequently fall down when they have to do it themselves?

Well it is now officially 2013 and I think I might be the first blog posted on the new year. That is basically because I really found nothing interesting to do tonight except hit a couple of great films. "Wreck-It Ralph" is not only a great film for you video gamers out there, but it might be one of the best films of the year. The idea of video game characters interacting with other games is not a new idea but I have never seen it so realized and funny.

Then I saw "Flight" which I wasn't too keen on but it turned out to be an amazing film which should revitalize my opinion of director Zemeckis (his last good film was probably Gump) and gives another great performance by Denzel. Who would think a movie about an alcoholic pilot would be so engaging but it really doesn't miss a step. Two great films to see in a year when it seemed like things were so slow but has really stepped it up this holiday season by putting out a lot of very good films.
