DETROIT, MI, December 16, 2014 -‐-‐ The Elaine L. Jacob Gallery at Wayne State University

announces the opening of BLOOD / SPORT, January 16 through March 27, 2015.

A scorpion and a frog meet on the bank of a stream and the scorpion asks the frog to carry him across on its back. The frog asks, "How do I know you won't sting me?" The scorpion says, "Because if I do, I will die too."

The frog is satisfied, and they set out, but in midstream, the scorpion stings the frog. The frog feels the onset of paralysis and starts to sink, knowing they both will drown, but has just enough time to gasp "Why?" Replies the scorpion: "Its my nature."

 -‐The Aesopica (Aesop's Fables)

Natural, contradictory impulses -‐   to help and be helped, to dominate and be directed -‐   create tensions not only in the animal kingdom but in the human realm as well. Whether through culture or games, the body becomes a medium for experience and display, mastery and catastrophe. The resultant spectacle alternates between the transcendent and the traumatic.

Blood / Sport features works by three contemporary artists who interpret human reaction and adaptation in complex and often predatory environments:  Jordan Eagles, Jordan Wayne Long, and Paul Pfeiffer.

Jordan Wayne Long's installation work includes custom made devices used in his performance. His design of the apparatus complements the gallery architecture.  Documentation of Jordan using these site-‐specific, physical constraints is on view throughout the duration of the exhibition.

The length of his performance in the gallery is determined by his endurance and by audience interaction.  Viewers often implicate themselves, feel vulnerable, and embrace Long's achievement or failure throughout his performance.

In Jordan Eagles' Blood Illumination environments, analog, overhead projectors shine and enlarge patterns formed by translucent, preserved panels of blood. The effect transforms the gallery space, casting light and dark shapes while bathing the interior and viewers red; wrapping the organic pattern around the architecture and abstracting the viewers' bodies which now appear to have new layers of birth-‐marked skin. Overall, the materials and luminosity in Eagle's work relate to themes of corporeality, mortality, spirituality, and science.

Paul Pfeiffer digitally removes key elements from video documentation of professional sporting events. Whether the athlete is removed or another element is edited out to isolate the athlete, the mass-‐culture sporting event shifts to a much more intimate scale. The edited event functions as a meditation on faith, desire, and a contemporary culture obsessed with celebrity. Viewers are implicitly invited to examine their own fears and obsessions.

Check out "What's Your WiFi" with MOLLY SODA next week Thursday 1/15/15 - Large Scale Exhibition at NORTH END STUDIOS Detroit

Detroit-based net art star Molly Soda is a digital artist who has exhibited worldwide, and was last year recognized as one of "The Most Important Artists of 2013" by Complex Magazine, alongside Banksy, Jeff Koons, and Marina Abramovic. Soda and her work have been featured in VICE, Rolling Stone and Forbes. For the past five years, she has explored female representation online through works that extend across multiple social media networks, including Tumblr—where she has over 40,000 followers—and the multimedia publishing platform, NewHive.

Soda moved to Detroit in September of 2013 from Chicago.

While she didn't plan on moving to the city originally, just visiting, she ended up falling in love with the people she met.

"I've never moved to a single city where I felt like I immediately had friends," says Soda.

Of the art scene, she says, "Everyone is super welcoming and awesome and is interested in who you are and non-judgmental. It's a really supportive community...It's less stress-inducing than places like Chicago and New York, where I've lived before…less social climbing."

Also, the lower cost of rent in Detroit gives Soda the ability to be a working artist. Eventually, she says, she'd like to open a gallery in the city.

On Thursday, January 15th at 7 PM, Soda is curating a large-scale exhibition at North End Studios, 5101 Lorraine Street.

The show—called What's Your Wifi-- is focused on artists who are exploring performance through the lens of networked culture. What's Your Wifi will feature net art created on the multimedia publishing platform NewHive by local artists Amber Locke, Sarah Cohen and PRISMVIEWS, as well as national contemporary net artists, including Emilie Gervais, Terrell Davis, Lauren Poor, Tyler Kline, ieatlemonstheniseeagain, Bryce Grates, and Maisie Cousins. The art will both be projected and displayed on desktop computer setups.

ENJOY FAR OFF SOUNDS - FISH AND SYNTHS

FAR OFF SOUNDS - FISH AND SYNTHS

Far Off Sounds is proud to present our latest installment,

"Fish & Synths", a brief look into the life of Detroit-based musician Richard Kik. Richard is believed to have amassed the largest collection of Russian synthesizers in North America, and is also the curator of the Belle Isle Aquarium in Detroit. The episode takes viewers into the mind and studio of Kik, in an attempt to understand the connection between his two seemingly-different passions of harsh industrial analog synthesis and aquaculture.

Far Off Sounds update:
2014 was a great year for the series, as we successfully completed our largest project to date, "God's Singing Man", the story of David Bixby, whose late 60's Christian psych-folk album found a second life 30 years after his departure from the cult he helped create.

Since the release, the Far Off Sounds creators have explored other creative projects. Thanks to a successful Kickstarter campaign, Jacob is currently in pre-production on his upcoming feature length documentary The Work at Lake Volta, which will see Jacob in Ghana in the next months. Nick is busy with his catering and events company Dr. Sushi, in Detroit, organizing pop-up dinners, cooking classes, and brunches full of noise muzak. Nick also spent time in Asia last fall, researching Japanese cuisine and filming in Jakarta, Indonesia.

Far Off Sounds is excited to be producing its next series of episodes this winter in California, so stay tuned throughout the year as we'll be sharing a number of unique and entrancing stories from around the world.

It's not easy to handle every aspect of a creative project. There's finances, production, collaboration, marketing, PR, you name it. We do our best to handle everything with a whopping budget of $0, so when it comes down to actually getting the final project out into the world, we could use your help!
If you're into the project and think your following would enjoy works like this, would you be so kind to help us share what we've done? The only way a show like ours can eventually fund itself is if a lot of people watch and support it. Thanks!

Happy new year!
-Nick and Jacob

Far Off Sounds is a hybrid of ethnographic documentary, music video, and travelogue. The show’s hosts, Nick and Jacob, guide viewers through distant lands and hidden pockets close to home, exploring the beautiful, strange and varied ways that people use, play, and connect with music around the world

ART SHOW: Thomas Pyrzewski, EVALINE - Saturday 1/10/15 - Saturday 1/31/15

HATCH Art Gallery is pleased to announce, EVALINE, new artwork by local
artist Thomas Pyrzewski. Please join us for the opening reception Saturday,
January 10th from 6-9pm. The Gallery is free and open to the
public in the heart of Hamtramck at 3456 Evaline, Hamtramck, MI 48212. If
you are unable to join us for the opening the complete show schedule is:

Saturday, January 10th, Opening Reception, 6-9pm
Thursday, January 15th, Art Detroit Now's Third Thursday, 6-9pm
Saturday, January 17th, Gallery Open, 1-6pm
Saturday, January 24th, Artist Talk at 2pm, Gallery Open, 1-6pm
Saturday, January 31st, Closing, 1-6pm

Discarded objects with curves and diagonals are collected – natural deadfall
and human-made. Bend, cut and assemble - the armature is constructed.
Muscle is applied, similar to a body. Cloth that has been
soaked in paint is placed onto the structure, providing durability, skin and
color.

Resonance from the objects influence application and determine the overall
composition, often described as visceral. The sculpture is organic in form
but contains mostly industrial materials within. This attribute
implies an interconnection between humanity and nature, aiming to reverse
memes associated with function.

The form isn't specific in content, yet tangible enough to provoke a
response from the viewer, whose experiential reaction plays an integral role
in completing the sculpture. Along with the viewer's interpretation,
connotations embedded in the materials are combined with the working process
and a collaborative formulation is conceived.

Thomas Pyrzewski was born in Detroit. He is a sculptor and performance
artist, and the Director of Galleries and Special Programs at Wayne State
University.

Hope to see you at the Opening Reception!

GOOD NEWS TO KICK OFF 2015: Detroit Institute of Arts reaches $100 million Grand Bargain Goal

Detroit Institute of Arts reaches $100 million Grand Bargain Goal

January 5, 2015 (Detroit)—The Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA) announced that thanks to the generosity of corporations, foundations and individuals, it has raised enough money to satisfy its $100 million commitment to the grand bargain that was part of Detroit's bankruptcy settlement.

"We're thrilled that our generous donors have helped us reach our goal so quickly," said Eugene A. Gargaro, Jr., DIA chairman of the board. "Not only have many long-time donors come through for us, but many new donors, including those from outside Michigan, have also given generously. We want to thank everyone who helped us fulfill this commitment that will benefit Detroit's pensioners and safeguard the museum's collection for generations to come."

Under the grand bargain, the DIA is required to make payments of $5 million per year for 20 years. However, the museum will take advantage of the "present value" discount negotiated in the grand bargain settlement. Although the museum is still awaiting signed agreements from several donors, the DIA has secured payment schedules  that will allow the museum to exceed its annual commitment of $5 million in the first five years, earning the museum a 6.75 percent present value benefit on those advance payments.

The most prominent example of the present value discount is the $194.8 million payment the State of Michigan will make in February. This one-time payment is equivalent to the initial commitment of $350 million over 20 years. The present value discount provides a benefit to donors for early payments.

The DIA made its first payment of $ 5 million to the Foundation for Detroit's Future, administered by the Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan, immediately after the closing of the grand bargain in December. The next scheduled payment will occur in June 2016, with additional annual payments taking place through 2034.

The completion of grand bargain fundraising will allow the DIA to focus its fundraising energy on building its unrestricted operating endowment. A healthy endowment will provide the museum with financial stability and reduce or eliminate its reliance on public funding.

Third Wave Weekend Benefit at PJ's Lager House

I want you to try saying something out loud and hear how it sounds...

"Detroit does not have a music store."

What?! Motown? Birthplace of Techno? Detroit Rock City?
Yeah, we have a couple record stores.
But there are ZERO musical instrument stores in our city.
Doesn't that feel ridiculous to say out loud?
Third Wave Music will be a full service musical instrument shop. Lessons, used instruments, repairs, and accessories. It will be woman owned and operated. It will be a nurturing and welcoming place for all types of musicians.

Lager House has decided to generously support Third Wave and all door/50% of bar will go to Detroit's much needed musical instrument shop. Coming Aug 2015. We hope you'll join us in enjoying a super diverse showcase of Detroit musicians.
