The annual DIY Street Fair held in Ferndale brings top notch local talent to the stages!
Saturday night headliners Electric Six brought their funky style of Rock n Roll to the people.Lead singer Dick Valentine was a bit under the weather with a raspy voice but that didn't stop the band from playing on. The only thing that did stop them was Ferndale's finest around 11:20 pm because they broke the loud music curfew. To the dismay of the packed crowd Electric Six had to stop in the middle of a song and end the show! MCB was there taking in the DIY vibe and shooting pictures of the bands! Here are photos Dan Sultana captured of Electric Six! More bands to follow through out the week so check back often!
Look for the Goober and the Peas photo set tomorrow!
1st SERIES OF THE FALL MUSIC FESTIVAL AT THE NEW CENTER PARK
While Cityfest is now history, Detroit's New Center Park will rock for three days straight when local rock n' roll impresario Stirling returns to host the "1st Series of the Fall" music festival from Thursday, September 23 to Saturday, September 25 at the new concert venue.
New Center Park-formerly the Park Stage during Cityfest- was revamped into an outdoor concert venue earlier this Summer.
The venue has hosted various free concerts on the weekends featuring local jazz and rock bands. Former Park Stage promoter Stirling was invited back to bring you some of the best local acts together for one weekend.
Starting on Thursday night, the festival begins at 6pm with the jazz sounds of Scott Gwinnell Jazz Orchestra, featuring special guest musicians from the local jazz community.
Friday night's festivities start at 8pm and features eclectic pop chanteuse Hayley Jane, the modern rock sounds of The Drags, the electronic sounds of Charlie Slick and country rock from Doop & The Inside Outlaws.
Saturday night the music continues, featuring the pop trio Fireking, rock troubadours Timothy Monger State Park, old-school rock n' roll from the Danny Kroha 3 and the psychedelic sounds of The Electric Lion Sound Wave Experiment will close out the weekend.
The shows start at 8pm and are FREE to attend.
The New Center Park is located on the southwest corner of Second Avenue and West Grand Boulevard across from the Fisher Building. The renovated park venue additions include a pub-style bar and outdoor grill, lawn and patio seating, wireless internet access, an outdoor fire pit, a newly installed sound system, and dedicated park restrooms.

She works in Downtown Detroit and is a full time student at Oakland University pursuing her English major.
Saturday this blogger finally got off her ass and did something. What better to "do" than the Ferndale DIY fest? Not only were there tons of arts and crafts to look at and purchase, but one of my favorite Mitten-state bands were scheduled to play "Electric six". It was settled then, I had to go.
We parked and walked a few blocks and we were there in no time. One of the first things I had to check out were these kick-ass masks. I seriously wanted to buy all of them, they were a lot of fun, right out of a Carnival.
After goofing around for way too long, we headed over to the other side of Woodward ave to check out the music, the crafty stuff, and of course the beer. You've seen them a million times, but they are always cool. Random crap made out of old vinyl. I would up buying a bowl made out of a Rush album, yes I did.
There were also a ton of fancy purses and hats and the like that were all colorful and awesome. I would up buying some really cool penguin bow clips, because you never know when they will just complete an outfit, right?
We made our way over to the beer tent and no, I did not get a picture of my delicious raspberry blonde ale from the WAB because the tent was PACKED. It was crazy, I seriously could barely move. After we downed our beer, we had an hour or so until Electric Six came on, so we headed into the Loving Touch for some more beer. There was a band prepping for an after-party, that I did not make it to because it was also packed by the time the concert was over, but they had a decent sound to them.
Finally, when it came time to see Electric Six, you guessed it, it was packed . That and I was slightly bummed to find that the lead singer, Dick Valentine, was sick and had a really bad sore throat but they still played. The crowed still drank beer, screamed, cheered, and wooted all night.
Here are a few of their videos, to get a better idea of what they sound like. They are kinda strange and obnoxious, but so is the rest of Michigan.
For anyone who sews (such as I), this is the Mac Daddy, no joke. People come from surrounding states to attend the workshops and seminars, or just to shop the dozens and dozens of specialty vendors in person. And it ain't all quilting and Holly Hobby either. Check out this clip from Threadbanger at a previous Expo.
The Moth, a not-for-profit storytelling organization, was founded in New York in 1997 by poet and novelist George Dawes Green, who wanted to recreate in New York the feeling of sultry summer evenings on his native St. Simon's Island, Georgia, where he and a small circle of friends would gather to spin spellbinding tales on his friend Wanda's porch. After moving to New York, George missed the sense of connection he had felt sharing stories with his friends back home, and he decided to invite a few friends over to his New York apartment to tell and hear stories. Thus the first "Moth" evening took place in his living room. Word of these captivating story nights quickly spread, and The Moth moved to bigger venues in New York. Today, The Moth conducts eight ongoing programs and has brought more than 3,000 live stories to over 100,000 audience members.
This isn't quite what I thought it might be, judging by the name, but it looks fun anyway. $10,000 of fun...

...Originally staged on Broadway in 1969 and adapted for film in 1972, this play marked a shift in famed auteur Woody Allen'sstyle; here, first, audiences got a taste of his gift for balancing hilarity with philosophy and depth.
Allan Felix, a freshly divorced puppy-dog of a man mildly obsessed with Humphrey Bogart, is persuaded to begin dating again by his best friend Dick and coached through his experiences by Dick's wife Linda (with interjections and advice from Bogart himself). When the relationship between these two platonic pill-popping pals begins toturn romantic, Allan must ask himself which is more important: the friendship he has with Dick or the possibility of romance with Linda. Frequently interrupted by apparitions of Humphrey Bogart and his ex-wife, Allan navigates his path with all the grace of… well, Woody Allen, and the play's ending will leave its audience highly satisfied and utterly bemused.
The cast includes Tommy Simon (Detroit), Jaclyn Strez (Dearborn), Stephen Blackwell (Detroit), Brian Papandrea (Royal Oak), Kira Frabotta (Dearborn), and Kennikki Jones (Detroit). Gwen Lindsay exhibits her scenic design; lighting by Neil Koivu; costumes by Katie Casebolt.

This was a fun show to shoot. Traffic was unkind to Hot Hot Heat, so they were behind. It didn't dampen their spirit though. I showed up early and got to see the sound check. These guys were already having fun. I couldn't wait for the show.
Hey Rosetta was cool too. I like that they use traditional instruments for pop music. It gave their music a different sound and it really worked.
The 20-22's are a current sounding band that should be given a listen.
Hot Hot Heat came out and put it down. They did not disappoint. The show was full of energy from start to finish. The audience didn't stop dancing the whole time. I think they would have tore the place down. They was crowding surf, which was more like ceiling walking.

(FREE COPY OF BUZZARD to winner) MARGOT & THE NUCLEAR SO AND SO'S:
BUZZARD IN STORES TODAY
Margot & the nuclear so and so's third album Buzzard hits stores today via the band's own Mariel Recordings (with distribution via Redeye). Recorded over one freezing month last winter in singer/guitarist Richard Edwards' adopted hometown of Chicago, IL, the album distills the band's music to its essence: melody-driven pop music with teeth. Margot's evolution to this newly raw, forceful sound has been earning the band - now the core trio of Edwards and longtime Margot members Tyler Watkins and Erik Kang (a host of Chicago musician friends join them in the studio and on the road) - high praise from the press.
Margot & the nuclear so and so's are three dates in to a massive Fall headlining tour. The first leg picks back up tonight in Ann Arbor, MI, at the Blind Pig and concludes October 15th in the band's original hometown of Indianapolis, IN, at the Broad Ripple Music Festival.

STATIC RECORDS RELEASES THE NEW ALBUM BY THE BUCK BROTHERS
Indie label Static Records based in Detroit, Michigan announces their 29th title this month. The album "We Are Merely Filters" is the second album by the UK band the Buck Brothers. This is also the first non-Michigan based band on the Static Records roster.
The Buck Brothers, a punk rock trio from London successfully achieved a spot in the Guinness Book of World Records for ‘highest number of gigs performed in 12 hours’ in their native London with 28 shows played in 10 hours on March 5, 2007. In 2008, Buck Brothers became the first band since The Police (in 1978) to perform at the House of Lords. Their debut album "Me" landed on the CMJ Top 200 national album chart and their song "Girls, Skirts, Boots, Bikes" was the most played and requested song on legendary DJ Rodney Bingenheimer's "Rodney on the Roq" radio show on LA's KROQ. Their second album "We Are Merely Filters" was released in the UK this spring and will be released in the U.S. on September 13. The album features a cover of the '80s song "Pop Muzik" by M. and ten other tracks such as "When I Look At You (All I Think About Is Sex)" and "She's Not Wearing Any" that recall the punk/pop sound of The Buzzcocks.
Static Records discovered the band playing at the annual North By Northeast International Music Festival in 2007 when their CD "Me" was included in the conference goody bag. Intrigued by their music, label founder Sue Static checked out their show and an internet friendship between the two entities formed afterward. The band toured the U.S. the following year with a stop at SXSW. When the band found themselves without a label in the States, Static stepped in to offer their services. Sue Static elaborates on the band's teaming up with Static, "After receiving hundreds of CDs in goody bags at conferences throughout the years, The Buck Brothers was one that caught my attention as this is the music that I enjoy and I'm glad to have them on the Static roster."
The album will be available for sale thru the Static Records website www.staticrecords.com, the bands official website-BuckBrothers.net and the online retailers; Amazon.com, CDBaby.com and Interpunk.com websites along with digital distribution on iTunes.
The band will also be touring stateside later this year with a show in Detroit. For more information on the Buck Brothers-www.buckbrothers.net

He plays a sort of Latin-Soul hybrid and his last album, Agua Del Pozo, won a Juno Award. He’ll be coming through Detroit opening with Justin Nozuka
The DFT is one of my favorite places in the city, and I haven't been there since they had their new bigger-badder-awesomer screen installed this summer. However, I have seen the Alloy Orchestra play there before, and they could perform in front of a 12" B&W TV and still be a better time than most. If you want to sample some of their soundtracks, check 'em out on Blip.TV. The DFT is hosting them all weekend for a full series of performances.
On September 24th, 25th and 26th, Boston’s world renowned Alloy Orchestra – which Pulitzer Prize-winning critic Roger Ebert has called “the best in the world at accompanying silent films” – will pay a return visit to the Detroit Film Theatre.
Sept. 24 @ 9:30 p.m. MAN WITH A MOVIE CAMERA
Russia/1929—directed by Dziga Vertov (70 min.)
Legendary Russian director Dziga Vertov’s classic experimental feature The Man With a Movie Camera (1929), a minute-by-minute portrait of a day in the life of a great city. Boasting innovative visual techniques that were decades ahead of their time, this amazingly powerful cinematic experience is enhanced brilliantly by the Alloy Orchestra’s stunningly vibrant score – widely praised as one of their very best – culminating in a veritable orgy of sight and sound that leaves viewers breathless.
Sept. 25 @ 7:30 p.m. THE COMPLETE METROPOLIS
Germany/1927—directed by Fritz Lang (153 min.)
The newly – and fully – restored version of Fritz Lang’s visionary science fiction “super-production” with its thousands of extras, monstrous sets, and eye-popping special effects, including a cataclysmic, multitude-engulfing flood will be accompanied live by the Alloy Orchestra’s acclaimed original score. This astounding new version — after considerable restoration work on the well-worn archival print — has been combined with the visually superb 2002 restoration to create an overwhelming experience. Seeing it with the Alloy Orchestra in person makes it one of this year’s must-see cinematic events.
Sept. 26 @ 3:00 MASTERS OF SLAPSTICK
The Alloy Orchestra will accompany a specially selected, family-friendly program of short films featuring Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton. (approx 60 min.)
Sept. 26 @ 6:00 p.m. BLACKMAIL
UK/1929—directed by Alfred Hitchcock (83 min.)
The widely-seen sound version of Alfred Hitchcock’s Blackmail is considered the first English talking picture; far more rare is this simultaneously-shot (and subtly different) silent version, which may well be Hitch’s greatest achievement of the silent era. The gripping story of a young British woman and her detective boyfriend begins conventionally, but quickly – and horrifyingly – spirals into an unpredictable tale of terror and suspense, accentuated brilliantly by the Alloy Orchestra’s intense and powerful score. Presented in a 35mm print, newly restored by the British Film Institute.

Pursuit of Faith: Etchings by Rembrandt In the Thrivent Financial Collection of Religious Art An art exhibition at the Alfred Berkowitz Gallery (University of Michigan-Dearborn)
Beginning September 24, 2010 the Alfred Berkowitz Gallery at the University of Michigan – Dearborn will host an exhibition of etchings by the renowned artist Rembrandt. “Pursuit of Faith: Etchings by Rembrandt in the Thrivent Financial Collection of Religious Art” was organized by Dr. Shelley Perlove and her undergraduate students at UM-Dearborn.
The exhibit runs through October 15, 2010 and is free and open to the public.
Rembrandt, the most famous Dutch artist in history, was intensely interested in religious subjects and was a serious reader of the Bible and other religious texts. He interpreted biblical scenes that were rarely illustrated by other artists and portrayed more traditional subjects in novel ways. In the 1600s, the Netherlands was a religious stew of people; here Jews, Calvinists, Catholics, and Mennonites lived side-by-side, often engaging in religious debate. Rembrandt thrived on the knowledge he gained from these surroundings. His etchings, which were produced for a select circle of patrons during his lifetime, are universally admired and sought by collectors and museum curators today.
“Pursuit of Faith: Etchings by Rembrandt from the Thrivent Financial Collection of Religious Art” features 25 fine prints, including the famous Hundred Guilder Print (1649), as well as the original copper plate of The Angel Appearing to the Shepherds (1634) which is also on view. The exhibit spans the years from Rembrandt’s early dramatic etchings of the 1630s to his late prints of the 1650s that focused on quieter, more contemplative moments.
The exhibit also includes detailed information on the art of etching and printmaking and the tools which the artist used. Rembrandt was able to go above and beyond the craft of printmaking, extending its boundaries in order to create the incredible images on view. In fact, his constant experimentation with technique means that many of the impressions that survive today are one of a kind. He worked with different types of paper, testing the effects of thick European paper against thinner Japanese types that produced a more luminous, translucent quality. Deeply involved in all aspects of this meticulous art form, Rembrandt practiced selective wiping of the inked plate, allowing the ink to gather in areas to create shadow, and wiping it away for the illusion of light, therefore creating contrast while also highlighting significant details of his works.
A more comprehensive explanation of Rembrandt’s techniques is included in the exhibition catalogue in an essay by Tom Rassieur entitled “Chapters in Rembrandt’s Life as a Printmaker.” Rassieur, currently the John E. Andrus III Curator of Prints and Drawings at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, is a world famous Rembrandt scholar, and has created several major Rembrandt exhibitions. The catalogue also features detailed information on each etching featured in the show along with scholarly essays by Amy Golahny, Susan Kurtetsky, and Shelley Perlove.
The catalogue will be on sale for the duration of the exhibit.
Gallery hours are 10am to 6:30pm, Monday through Friday.
The Alfred Berkowitz Gallery is located on the third floor
of the Mardigian Library, University of Michigan-Dearborn,
