UPCOMING! Zap Mama & Antibalas on Feb. 6, 2015 at Music Hall Center Detroit + AFTERPARTY

Our friends at Detroit's Music Hall Center for the Performing Arts welcome the rare pairing of famed Afrobeat/Afro-pop stars Zap Mama and Antibalas to Detroit.  The not to be missed show takes place on Friday, February 6th at 8pm.
Belgian Afro-pop artist Marie Daulne, better known as Zap Mama, has been making a name for herself in the Afro-pop world since the release of her debut album in 1991. Her music blends infused African vocal techniques, with influence from American Hip Hop, Nu-Soul, and Jazz with Pop sensibilities. Her music utilizes European polyphony, which means that there's more than one featured line of melody. Zap Mama has collaborated with a who's who of known musicians including Alanis Morrisette, G. Love, Sergio Mendez, Common, Talib Kweli, Michael Franti, Questlove, King Britt, Erykah Badu, The Roots, DJ Krush and Detroit's own techno pioneer, Carl Craig.
Brooklyn-based Afro-beat outfit, Antibalas, blend elements of Jazz, Funk, and dub with Afro-beat inspired by Music hall favorite, Fela Kuti. The band also places emphasis on the traditional drumming of Cuba and West Africa. Speaking of the Music Hall, Antibalas arranged and performed the score for Broadway musical "Fela", which has made its way to the Music Hall for two runs.

MCB PICK OF THE WEEK: Our own show! Come join us for "Perfect 10" - MOTORCITYBLOG's 10 Year Anniversary Concert & Fundraiser for Michigan Humane Society tomorrow Saturday 1/17/15

Wow - hard to believe its been 10 years since we created the ol' MCB.

Over the years we have had more than 100 different contributors and provided media coverage for thousands of shows and events not only locally here in the motorcity, but at times across the nation and around the world.

Many of us have gone from single to married to parenthood in that time.

We named our event "Perfect 10" because it has been far from a perfect decade for us
but if every pork chop was perfect you wouldn't have hotdogs!

We have been invited to some of the most prestigious events and met some of the most amazing people along the way and delivered photos, reviews, videos and giveaways at every point possible,

On the inverse, we have covered shows where we were the only people in the audience or documented events that were completely in poor taste or complete failures.

I think we have done a fairly good job of being somewhat impartial and letting the reader decide for themselves what they thought about the content of our coverage instead of trying to be tastemakers.

Our relationships have allowed us to bring a lot of free giveaways to our readers and we have had the pleasure of working with local and national promoters to help get the word out on various events which has benefited our readers and honestly..its a lot of fun to give someone free stuff on a regular basis as we have for years on MCB.

My goal has always been to be as inclusive as possible not only regarding the contributors but the folks looking for coverage and content delivery.  Everyone putting on an event or creating music/art/benefit deserves to be heard without someone judging if their event was worthy of coverage and all writers/photographers were able to contribute no matter what others may have thought of their level of talent.

I would imagine that when most people think of MCB they think of me but by no means am I responsible for this on my own as most of the credit would go to the loose knit team of trusted friends (some whom I have still yet to meet face to face) who have used the MCB to hone their various talents and have had a lot of fun along the way.

They deserve the praise and hopefully feel that they were able to squeeze as much blood from the MCB stone as possible every step of the way.

So, we are inviting you to come on down to the Music Hall tomorrow night for an amazing event and help us celebrate 10 years of running the streets of the motorcity documenting all the unique and talented people in this town.

We have great show lined up and obviously a very deserving charity so we hope to see you there!
Thank you

WIN TICKETS- The Devil Makes Three and Joe Pug- Friday, January 16th @ St. Andrew's Hall

"You and me and The Devil Makes Three, don't need no other lovin' baby..."

Vermont trio, The Devil Makes Three, returns to the Motor City this Friday at Saint Andrew's Hall, and we have tickets. Forget what you've experienced in the past about Americana or even Bluegrass boring you, Americana music is slowly making a dramatic comeback. With groups such as Slaughter Daughters and Detroit's own Rickett Pass, The Devil Makes Three is yet another outfit to put directly in the middle of your radar if it isn't already.

Supporting The Devil Makes Three is Joe Pug. Pouring his soul into each note of every lyric, the Austin, Texas native will release his latest effort, Windfall, on March 10th, but "If Still It Can't Be Found", a single which features Pat Sansone from Wilco, is streaming now here.  His experiences leading up to the recording and the release of the album were heavy, so much so that the album almost did not happen.  From his bio, “When you’re sort of pushing through a dark period of your life it’s probably inevitable that some of that is going to find its way onto the page.  But in the same way, by the time we were in the studio the process had become very effortless and joyful. And hopefully you can hear a lot of that on the record as well.”

Catch The Devil Makes Three and Joe Pug at St. Andrew's Hall this Friday. Tickets to the show are available here. To win tickets, email motorcityblog@earthlink.net with "The Devil Makes Three" as the subject.

Static presents...A NIGHT OF BLUEGRASS/AMERICANA MUSIC FEATURING THE MATCHSELLERS

Join us for an evening of Americana music featuring The Matchsellers. a bluegrass duo from Kansas City headlining the night. They are on a winter tour in support of their new album “Kosciusko County” that was recently released on Dec. 27, 2014.

The Matchsellers is the unlikely result of a classically trained violinist (Julie Bates) from Kansas City, MO  and a Chicago blues guitarist (Andrew Morris) from Warsaw, Indiana  meeting in Leipzig, Germany and forming a bluegrass duo. During their year of living and working as ex-pats in the former East Germany, the pair began reanalyzing the songs of their homeland and developed a tight, yet gritty, bluegrass style. In the summer of 2013 they left their jobs to hit the road and haven’t looked back.

Since then they have toured Germany, the UK, the Czech Republic, and 21 US states, averaging 170 shows a year. The Matchsellers have become known for their excellent musicianship, tight vocal harmonies and an entertaining, high-energy stage show best experienced live. Faithful bluegrass traditionals and blues-infused originals are peppered with German songs and various folk covers for a diverse set list.

Performing will be:

• Escaping Pavement - They call their music “Americana on the rocks” so expect a more upbeat rockin' style!

• Cold Tone Harvest - The Michigan indie folk trio have released the album “Layers” that also aptly describes their acoustic folk sound.

• Behind The Times - Behind The Times is an acoustic trio which blends influences from bluegrass, country, jazz, and popular favorites.

The show is SATURDAY, JAN. 17 at 9 pm. The venue is New Dodge Lounge located at 8850 Jos. Campau in Hamtramck (South of Holbrook). Please call 313-874-5963. 18 & over are welcome. Admission is $5.

For more information on this event please check out The Matchsellers website.

Leighton Meester performs at Hotel Cafe in Hollywood - January 6th, 2015

You've seen Leighton Meester on television and in film, but have you heard her music? Heartstrings, her hit and debut album's namesake, which she wrote and composed entirely herself, really captures your soul with sweet ethereal melodies paired with sassy, soulful lyrics.

Music is nothing new to her and it showed by Leighton, right in her element, gracefully singing away her set on her opening night for her three week residency at The Hotel Cafe. The place was packed full of loyal Leighton fans and supporters. I'm going to be completely straight forward with today's music and admit how much I can't stand the lyrics of most of today's song writers. The talent-to-fame ratios just hardly ever add up and you'll almost never find me listening to any "Top 40". I was however pleasantly surprised to read the lyrics to Leighton's songs and not only can she play her instruments and sing SO beautifully, but she writes her own amazing songs as well! She joins the sistren of real musicians.

Dana Williams opened up for Leighton and dished out a beautiful set as well. She later joined Leighton for a ridiculously awesome Fleetwood Mac cover of "Dreams".  Leighton also covered Loretta Lynn's "You Ain't Woman Enough (To Take My Man)" which was also impossible not to love.

Her voice really captures you. She's a pretty young lady of many talents and music is without a doubt only one of them. She continues her residency for two more Tuesdays - Jan 13th, and Jan 20th.

DO NOT MISS FUNDRAISER: SNEAK PEEK We Are Twisted Fucking Sister tomorrow Friday 1/9/15 at the Magic Bag Ferndale

I remember the first time I came across Twisted Sister like it was yesterday.

I would go to the record store every weekend usually on Friday night and buy some random 45's and various LPs for the weekend....the guy behind the counter would slip me something in my bag every once in a while which usually was pretty good.  We were staying in a place just off 8mile and 75 where the houses were stacked like pancakes which didn't go over very well when I spun the TS wax at full blast.  Man that record was good!

MCB supports independent film makers and we hope you can get to this show!

Songs From The Moon is an avant-pop/rock collective fronted by songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Jonathan A. Berz (keyboardist of the Walking Beat, formerly of Blasé Splee). Jon has been a musician in the Detroit area for 20 years and has performed around a thousand shows. This year he contributed live keyboards with the High Strung and played sound effects for live readings from High Strung frontman Josh Malerman's debut novel Bird Box to blindfolded audiences.
