THIS WKEND: The Man Who Fell to Earth (director's cut) @ DFT

I really enjoyed this movie; but then, I always find Bowie hypnotic. I didn't even realize there was a director's cut – an even trippier version sounds excellent to me!

(USA/1976—directed by Nicolas Roeg)
Available on the big screen for the first time in years, the fully restored director’s cut of The Man Who Fell to Earth is a daring exploration of the boundaries of science fiction as art form and metaphor. The story of an alien on an elaborate rescue mission provides the launching pad for Nicolas Roeg’s (Walkabout, Don’t Look Now) cinematic tour de force, a formally adventurous and visually amazing fable about the many forms and levels of alienation that ripple through contemporary life. Rock legend David Bowie, in his acting debut, eerily and movingly embodies the title role, while Candy Clark, Buck Henry, and the great Rip Torn turn in memorable supporting performances. The film’s hallucinatory vision was obscured in the first American theatrical release, which deleted nearly twenty minutes of crucial scenes and details, substantially confusing the narrative, but now Roeg's original cut is available for the first time in years in new, widescreen 35mm prints. (139 min.)

“A rich kaleidoscope of contemporary America.” –Time Out (London)

"Dazzling! Here is a sci-fi movie dedicated to the notion that no planet, anywhere else in the galaxy, would look half as freakish as our own would to the inquiring visitor. The very last scene is as piercing as ever."   -The New Yorker

"A masterpiece."   -New York Magazine
