I really enjoyed this movie; but then, I always find Bowie hypnotic. I didn't even realize there was a director's cut – an even trippier version sounds excellent to me!

The story of an alien on an elaborate rescue mission provides the launching pad for Nicolas Roeg’s (Walkabout, Don’t Look Now) cinematic tour de force, a formally adventurous and visually amazing fable about the many forms and levels of alienation that ripple through contemporary life. Rock legend David Bowie, in his acting debut, eerily and movingly embodies the title role, while Candy Clark, Buck Henry, and the great Rip Torn turn in memorable supporting performances. The film’s hallucinatory vision was obscured in the first American theatrical release, which deleted nearly twenty minutes of crucial scenes and details, substantially confusing the narrative, but now Roeg's original cut is available for the first time in years in new, widescreen 35mm prints.
